Part 6. 18th Century. Rationalism, Revivalism and Wesley An intensive look at the Christian Church down the ages, providing powerful messages for our own times. Many church members know little or nothing about the story of Christianity between the New Testament period and today. They therefore may not realise how much they have been influenced by traditions developed during that time. These can have both a negative and positive benefit. Negative, because ‘those who forget history are condemned to relive it'. Most of the mistakes we make and errors we fall into have happened before and we can learn from our forefathers to avoid them. Positive, because we have such a rich heritage it would be folly to ignore. We can draw inspiration and examples from the spiritual giants who went before us and, after all, we can look forward to meeting them personally in glory.
Journalist and author of the unauthorised biography of Peter Mandelson, Paul Routledge explains how the Ambassador's sacking was inevitable. Professor Natasha Lindstaedt from the department of government at Essex University discusses political violence. Delyth Evans, new chair of S4C is with us to say why the channel's next five years will be all about digital services. Owain Williams, would-be Senedd candidate muses over the Welsh element of Welsh Labour. Rhys Kaminski-Jones tells us all about his new book, Welsh Revivalism in Imperial Britain 1707-1819: True Britons and Celtic Empires Professor Kate Thirlaway and Cllr Calum Davies review the papers
In the long eighteenth century, as Britain grappled with the aftermath of the 1707 Acts of Union and consolidated a global empire, Welsh ‘Cambro-Britons' developed a movement of cultural awakening, reinventing their traditions for a new age. Amid profound local, national and imperial transformations, Welsh authors and activists sought to reimagine their history, language and literature, claiming a place for Wales and the Welsh diaspora in the British imperial order. Far from being an insular phenomenon, this revival intersected with key debates of the era, from enlightenment science and radical politics to colonial expansion, transatlantic abolitionism and metropolitan sociability. Welsh Revivalism in Imperial Britain, 1707-1819: True Britons and Celtic Empires (Boydell & Brewer, 2025) by Dr. Rhys Kaminski-Jones reframes Welsh cultural revivalism, revealing its fundamentally international and archipelagic dimensions. Nationally significant Welsh authors like Lewis Morris, David Samwell, Thomas Pennant, and Iolo Morganwg are placed in their transnational, imperial, and global contexts. Examined alongside Thomas Gray's British bardism, William Jones's Orientalism, and the imperialism of Cook's voyages, their writings demonstrate how Welsh thinkers engaged with – and shaped – shifting ideas of Britishness, empire, race, and identity. Drawing on new archival research, and giving equal attention to Welsh and English language texts, Dr. Kaminski-Jones challenges traditional narratives of Welsh cultural nationalism as a simple precursor to modern Welsh nationhood, instead positioning the revival as central to transatlantic intellectual currents. With its pathbreaking bilingual and interdisciplinary approach, this book offers fresh insights into the complexities of nationhood, empire, and cultural memory. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Is your pursuit of revival drawing you closer to God or burning you out? Let's examine the critical difference between authentic spiritual awakening versus chasing manufactured revivalism.Throughout history, genuine moves of God have transformed communities through prayer and hunger for His presence. But for every authentic revival, countless Christians have burned out chasing emotional experiences and worldwide impact at any cost. We'll examine how true revival, like waves in the ocean, can't be manufactured - but we can position ourselves to catch that next wave of what God is doing.Join us as we explore the biblical path to revival without falling into the trap of revivalism. Whether you're longing for deeper encounters with God, concerned about modern revival movements, or simply trying to discern what's authentic, this conversation will help you navigate the difference between striving and surrender in pursuit of God's presence.Kairos Classroom: Use Promo Code Remnant for 10% offhttps://kairosclassroom.com/classesSupport the showABOUT THE REMNANT RADIO:
Khoisan revivalism challenges the long-held myth of extinction by reclaiming identity, history, and land in post-apartheid South Africa. In Khoisan Consciousness, Rafael Verbuyst explores how this movement, rooted in resistance and decolonization, navigates the complexities of indigeneity, leadership disputes, and recognition in a society still shaped by colonial and apartheid-era classifications.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Contemporary India is witness to a huge change in which, space for serious conversations on all aspects of culture, is receding. The advocacy of religious-cultural nationalism has come to replace all forms of culture. It has also come to take many forms. For instance, the murder of rationalists – Kalburgi, Pansare, and Gauri Lankesh – underlines the contested nature of secularism, and the fragile space for freedom of thought in religion, media and culture in India. There has been a determined attempt to rewrite the cultural history of India, a project that has fed into the writing of school textbooks. The rise of online archival projects offering alternative accounts of Indian history, the popular cultures of televised Hinduism, curbs on art and cinema, the huge nexus of religion and market, rise of hate speech are signals to a certain kind of revivalism. Writings that celebrate plurality and tolerance are being decried, systematically countered and a monolithic agenda of culture is gradually being established. In the absence of a real space for cultural conversations, politics dominates all kinds of discourses. In this episode of BIC Talks Aruna Roy, Activist & Former Civil Servant, sheds light on these receding spaces. This lecture took place at the BIC premises in early January 2024 as the U R Ananthamurthy Memorial Lecture. Subscribe to the BIC Talks Podcast on your favourite podcast app! Sign up for the giveaway here: https://www.mediagratiae.org/the-whole-counsel-giveaway Archibald Alexander was a pastor, theologian, and president of Princeton Seminary in the early-mid 1800s. He was deeply effected by the Great Awakening and was careful in his understanding and teaching of the theology of revival during his day. While there are a great many of his writings we could spend time discussing, we want to begin a new series this week honing in on five letters he wrote while ministering to those “in the autumn of life.” But before we get into the content of his letters, we want to introduce you to Archibald himself. He was a rare mixture of intellect and heart. That reality comes through in his writing and ministry. For this series we will be doing two giveaways. The first will be this week where we are giving away one copy of Revival and Revivalism by Ian Murray. We have spoken of this book before. If you don't have a copy, sign up to enter to win this one. If you already have a copy, sign up to win this one just to give it away to a friend. It is a very helpful work to explain the development of our current religious culture. Doth Protest Too Much: A Protestant Historical-Theology Podcast
This is the second part of our conversation with Dr. Thomas E. Jacobson (the first part was published as the episode "The Nordic Reformation"). In this episode, Dr. Jacobson shares about his interest in the Norwegian Pietist leader Hans Nielsen Hauge (who became the focus of his doctoral dissertation) and how 'Haugean' movement later found its way into North American Lutheranism. Dr. Jacobson and Andrew also discuss Laestadian Lutherans- another spiritual awakening group out of Lutheranism that ended up in North America (and sort of resembles the Amish, but not entirely). Enjoy! Shownotes: -The quote Andrew shared at the beginning of our discussion on Hauge was from a lecture Dr. Jacobson gave on Hauge at Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota in April, 2019. Transcript here. -The quote Andrew shared on the Laestadians was from a brief chapter Dr. Jacobson wrote titled "The Apostolic Lutheran Tradition" from the book Most Certainly True: 75 Stories about Lutherans Since 1517.

When farmer John Durfee found the body of a local factory girl hanging from a fence post on his property on the morning of December 21, 1832, he and the rest of the townspeople assumed she had died by suicide. But a cryptic note she had left among her possessions pointed the investigation in a different direction, and the ensuing murder trial captured the public imagination. Joining me now to discuss the murder of Maria Cornell and the shifting cultural milieu of New England in the 1830s is Dr. Bruce Dorsey, Professor of History at Swarthmore College and author of Murder in a Mill Town: Sex, Faith, and the Crime That Captivated a Nation. In this episode, we zoom into the two key figures of the second great awakening, Asahel Nettleton and Charles Finney. Nettleton was of the "old way," much in the grain of Jonathan Edwards, believing that revival and conversion were sovereign works of God. Finney launched the "new way," which believed revival could be manufactured by man. Though Finney was reported to have 250,000 converts, history shows that most were illegitimate. Nettleton was reported to have 25,000 converts, of which 90 percent or more were true converts. To learn more about our ministry or to donate, visit: afci.us

Scott gives his thoughts on the recent "revival" at Asbury College in the broader context of revivalism throughout America's history.
Gretchen Ronnevik and Katie Koplin continue their conversation with historian Dan vanVoorhis about the history of revivals. We cut into this conversation asking the question: is revivalism something for the young? Does it hit a certain demographic of psychological development differently? Does growing older and have different vocations mean that we are not "on fire for the Lord." We consider the notstalgia side of going through a passionate season of faith, and walking through what it means to walk through a season of faith that is absolutely ordinary. We go in depth about the "old vs young" cyclical tension that goes through church history, and what it means to pass on the faith to the next generation well. The young tend to be hopeful and optimistic, and the old tend to be guarded against things that ended up causing hurt, or clinging to things that they were taught. When has this been done well? We talk about emotion and worship, what the psalmists say about that. We talk about what it means to "on fire for the Lord" and how people define that differently, and how emotions and nostalgia can play into that. We talk about the importance of ordinary means of grace, so that we can understand the consistency of grace, and where to think of extraordinary things. We invited church historian, Dan van Voorhis, to come and talk to us about the history of revivalism. What is a revival? Are we in a revival right now? He talks about the first Great Awakening, and the second Great Awakening, and the mindsets and theology that came out of those movements. He talks about a spectrum in our definitions of revivals, from Pentecostal to Methodist, and the historical crossover that happened during the Second Great Awakening between the Methodists and Baptists. And then we talk about ordinary means of grace, and extraordinary means of grace, in the ways the Holy Spirit works in our lives. This is part 1 of a 2 part conversation on revivalism with Dan, for the purpose of having an educated, gracious, and thoughtful approach to reports of revivals happening. When someone says I'm going to give church a try the next question is, “Which church?” Here's a resource to make one aware of the factors that may help make that decision. This is Part 3 of the series on church.Churches are diverse. Many nuances make individual congregations unique. Here are some musings on the style of churches. How the church feels when I walk in the door. How it plays out in relationships. We discuss the impact that church life of the American frontier during the early 19th Century continues to impact church now. Camp meetings became a template of revivalism and nondenominational Christianity. Church size and organization structure strongly determine the experience of those entering into the life of a congregation. Scripture includes Acts 16:31-34 with a discussion of “household” as a translation of the Greek “oikos”.Support the show
