POPULARITY
Our very special guest this month has been working in the film industry for over 30 years. He's written for countless comic franchises including Logan's Run (and his own - Discord), worked as a special effects makeup artist for some of the biggest names in Hollywood, created incredible puppetry for many big-named films, and even won a Saturn award for his own film that he wrote & directed, Encounter (2019). And if all that isn't enough, he even owns a Dalek, a Zygon, and THE original TARDIS console from the 1996 TV Movie! He's Paul J. Salamoff and he joins us to talk about all of these things and of course his love of Doctor Who. Then Paul brings us his Pick of the Month - the iconic CBS anthology series, The Twilight Zone! We discuss at least five personal favorite episodes of Paul's and talk about why the series remains timeless to this day. Join us as we look (spoiler-free!) at this very influential series which you can watch currently in North America on Paramount Plus. And here's a link to Paul's movie, Encounter (currently on Prime Video) and a huge list of comics and books that Paul has written over the years! Encounter (2019) Paul J. Writer, Director, Producer, and Screenwriter launches his new novel The Silent Planet The Sistas sit down with Subrina's mentor, New York Film Academy screenwriting instructor Paul J. Salamoff, to talk about his new sci-fi novel The Silent Planet, described as Solaris meets Jurassic Park. This interview is a gift as Paul drops all sorts of wisdom from writing with a theme, to how to take a note, to the inspiration of collaboration. After over 30 years in Hollywood, Paul has a story about everybody and everything. Hear how two lines of dialogue can make a film, or that time he interviewed Steven Spielberg. Paul doesn't believe in the 'tortured writer', but Subrina believes there was a slightly tortured Sista in NYFA's Screenwriting course that year. Buy The Silent Planet by Paul J. Introducing: CLASSIC CINEMA: Ep 1. SUPERPOWER WISHES was recorded live on Facebook and Youtube on Tuesday May 11th, 2021 at 7:00pm EDT. Hosted by producer, writer and comedian Michelle Barbera.Guests: John Semper and Paul SalamoffMichelle Barberais an artist, comedian, producer, and writer who lives in the Boston area with her husband, 4 children, and dog. She is cofounder and co-director of the Women in Comedy Festival, presented by HBO, now in its 11th year. She discovered her love of sci-fi and horror via unmonitored cable viewing and stalking the Worcester public library throughout her childhood. Checking her closet for pod people every night for two years was a small price to pay for the joy of vicarious interstellar journeys, sentient AI, and watching a human head sprout legs and scuttle away.Boston-born John Semper was there at the very beginning of the Boston Sci-Fi Festival when he was the assistant manager of the legendary Orson Welles Cinema. He has since gone on to have a forty year career writing and producing TV series and movies in Hollywood. He is best known as the writer/producer of SPIDER-MAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and co-writer of the cult comedy film CLASS ACT. Paul J. Salamoff has been working for over 30 years in Film, TV, Video Games and Commercials as a Writer, Producer, Director, Executive, Comic Creator, Storyboard Artist and Make-Up FX Artist as well as a Teacher at THE NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY. He is the author of ON THE SET: The Hidden Rules of Movie Making Etiquette and the graphic novels Hired Guns, Discord, Tales of Discord and Logan's Run. A throwback to the idea & character-based sci fi of the 1970s, writer / director Paul J. Salamoff's ENCOUNTER on the surface seems a near tropish yarn about a young artist who, after losing his daughter and the ability to walk in an accident, regains the power of his legs after a group of friends encounter a small alien “lifeform” / object after it crash lands in a field. Below the surface, however, it quickly becomes more a rift on Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST - as the pod-like being (which we aren't sure is “good” or “evil”) begins to fulfill the needs - physical and psychological - in the lives of the members of that group, but only … if!From the amount of fun we had on this one you may find it hard to believe, but we were stone sober. Well, kind of, as we quickly became intoxicated by love of the genre - opening with a mini discussion of 70s era sci fi-ers (among them LOGAN'S RUN and WESTWORLD) which not only continue to creatively inspire us all - and Paul particularly on ENCOUNTER - but the creators of other recent independent “throwback” speculative thrillers like MOON, LOOPER and EX MACHINA. We then move to “mini film school” as Paul details his film's origin, the assemblage of his cast (including genre faves Luke Hemsworth and Tom Atkins) and the shoot. And, oh, stay tuned after the end credits for a BONUS SECTION SPOILERS SPECIAL for those who've seen ENCOUNTER - where we talk Easter Eggs implanted within the film's final sequence. Yeah, we pack quite a bit into one hour. ______________________________________________________________________________THE MOVIE SNEAK PODCAST is part of The GullCottage/Sandlot - a film blog, cinema magazine, growing reference library and online network "Celebrating The Art of Cinema, ...
