It's cold out there! And since it is that winter time of year for many people, we at Movies for Life are bringing you some snowbound movies to talk about. We have a couple of truly great ones this week, starting with Michele's pick of the 2011 survival drama THE GREY. Though it was marketed as just being Liam Neeson vs wolves in the snow, we get into why this movie is really so much more than that and therefore should be talked about a lot more! Then we tackle a true cinematic classic with Brian's choice - the Coen brothers' masterpiece FARGO. There is definitely a lot of imitating of the Minnesota accent, but there's also talk about why Marge is the best character ever, and really just some of our absolute favorite scenes, shots, and lines from this iconic film. Santa ain't the only one comin' back to town. So's our buddy, Tommy Nuggetz! He's here to help us ring in the holidays with the return of our annual HOLIDAY GRAB BAG EPISODE!  The theme this year: SNOWBOUND CINEMA. So grab your ugly sweaters because we're breaking out the nostalgic commercials of yesteryear and breaking THE ICE with three random snow-covered movies: The Grey, Vertical Limit, and Black Coal, Thin Ice. "Wait! Why didn't you dummies review The Thing? That's a snowy movie I've heard of!" you might say. We explain why in the episode. Join us as we discuss skipping The Thing, and what happens when you watch movies on airplanes that have plane crash scenes in them. Along the way, we also debate whether or not Chris O'Donnell is any good, lament Tubi's janky subtitles, and reminisce about the good ol' days of McDonald's Bucks.  Happy holidays, Spoopers! Since last week was my birthday I decided to unlock a Patreon episode! Enjoy 2 hrs of 90210 talk!Description: This show was really wild. In order to fill a schedule with over 270 episodes the amount of storylines that 90210 produced is just out there. Since we aren't devoting the entire show to recapping the show me and Charles decided to pick some of our standouts and it has to do with the vices and party drugs that crept into the show. At first we take a lighthearted fun approach to underground rave culture with (shock!) bad girl Emily Valentine. In Season 2's U4EA (1991) episode we get into the fashion that's amazing, Emily's vibe and how much Brenda hates her, and how Brandon is actually cool to be around for once. Now, it takes a different and darker turn in Season 6's Snowbound (1996) we get a front row seat to the development of 'Cocaine Kelly' and her relationship with "artist" Colin. There are so many iconic moments that we get into about the show as a whole and just how Luke Perry is so amazing and will forever be the glue of the show. Off-topic rants include: our favorite tv themes, tv censorship of the 90s, and the spinoffs that ensued.*premiered on Patreon Dec 31, 2022---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show  for $5 a month! Winter is upon us, and this week I've picked three old time radio mysteries set during snowstorms. First up, there's a suspicious suicide at a lodge for Barton Drake to solve in Mystery is My Hobby. Then, Mr. and Mrs. North check in for murder at a hotel during a storm. Barbara Britton and Richard Denning star as Pam and Jerry in "Snowbound" (an AFRS rebroadcast). Finally, Gerald Mohr is Philip Marlowe who takes shelter from a blizzard only to discover he's trapped with the family of a man he killed in "The Grim Echo" (originally aired on CBS on February 14, 1950).

The Remnant with Jonah Goldberg

Snowbound in the depths of Pennsylvania, Jonah invites the inimitable Yuval Levin back to the Remnant for a philosophical yet accessible conversation on the responsibilities we face as members of a free society. What's the best way to approach political and civic life in the United States, and how should we treat our institutions? For that matter, why is cynicism harmful? Can higher education be fixed? And is the internet damaging democracy?Show Notes:- Yuval's page at AEI- A Time to Build, still available from all good booksellers- Yuval: “The Constitution and National Unity”- Yuval's ideas for repairing democracy- Mark Leibovich's This Town- “You are all individuals”- Robert Nisbet's The Quest for Community- Arnold Kling: “How the Internet Turned Bad”- Yuval: “Politics After the Internet”- Megan McArdle: “It's time for major institutions to make their employees get off of Twitter”
