    Old-school retro while "new era" ballsy as hell, the films of producer Arthur Sarkissian - among them the RUSH HOUR series, WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, Walter Hill's LAST MAN STANDING, Rutger Hauer's back-in-day classic WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE, Martin Campbell's THE FOREIGNER with Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, THE PROTÉGÉ, MEMORY and more - were all shepherded to the screen by Mr. Sarkissian not necessarily because of how critics or studios or distributors would react to them, ... but more importantly by how audiences would. And this is because Sarkissian grew up falling in love with films like THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, KELLY'S HEROES, JAWS and others while watching them in theaters surrounded by audiences laughing, screaming, cheering and more.     What could make the greatest film summer of them all, 1982 - where within four months POLTERGEIST, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, E.T., ROCKY III, BLADE RUNNER, THE THING, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, TRON, FIREFOX, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, PINK FLOYD: THE WALL, THE SECRET OF NIMH, THE ROAD WARRIOR, NIGHT SHIFT, DINER and more, ... which 40 years ago all opened back-to-back / week-after-week - even better? How 'bout reliving that time with the people with whom you first saw many of those movies! That's what we did - inviting three of our closest life-long friends to step into the WayBack Machine with us to that most memorable summer. And, hey, in doing so we realized it wasn't just the films themselves which gave us that lifetime of memories we cherish to this day, but the fact that it was also a very special time of life associated with those movies which we came to emotionally - sometimes subconsciously - link to them.     The concept of independent cinema isn't as new as some believe, and there have always been two kinds. One is where stars break from the system to do their own thing - such as when Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith joined to form the (then) independent company United Artists to oppose the financial and creative strangulation of the “Big Five” studios of the day. And the other where a relative upstart / outsider has the chutzpah to not only tear down long-established walls, but in the process build bridges for others into the industry - such as when 100 years before Tyler Perry African-American novelist Oscar Micheaux establish himself as the first black American “one man studio”, directing and producing 40 films and seven novels in just under 30 years between 1919 and 1948. That spirit still exists today. And in celebration THE MOVIE SNEAK sits down with three filmmakers for our annual fireside on the current state of the independent cinematic arts. Stacy Layne Wilson takes us behind-the-scenes on her new “Lo Fi, Sci Fi, Rock ‘n Roll Comedy” THE SECOND AGE OF AQUARIUS. Filmmaker Amanda Kasmira Cryer gives us a little pre-vis on her searing in-the-works documentary INSIDE MEN which delves into prison reform and the need to do away with the “for-profit” incarceration system. And ahead-of-his-time writer / director Chris Chan Lee chats with us about his acclaimed hard-hitting 1997 coming-of-age drama YELLOW, and his “currently on the festival circuit" SILENT RIVER – which begins as a Sam Shepard-like drama about a man seeking reconciliation with his estranged wife, then branches in mind-bending genre territory worthy of Rod Serling and Richard Matheson.     It's that time of year again where - as certain as those proverbial death, taxes and the changing of the seasons (though usually a lot more fun) - THE MOVIE SNEAK PODCAST unleashes its choices for the annual CHEAPIE BIN AWARDS. The world's most unpretentious awards show (which really doesn't actually give out any trophies), THE CHEAPIE BINS celebrates a love of film by delving into our favorites from the last year. The twist, though, is they aren't necessarily films which opened within the last year. But are rather films we've only just seen in that last year via taking a chance / a flyer / a gamble and picking them up for a buck or two in a local supermarket, drug store or Dollar Store / Dollar Tree cheapie bin. As such, we take into consideration old and new, and everything from studio fare and critical gems to contemporary action flicks and old-school grindhousers in our awards categories - "Best Remake or Reboot", "Most Surprising Film, ...     "Neo" means "new". But from Charlottesville, to the plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, to the January 6th terror attack (and Sept.18th rally attempting to recasts the insurrectionists as "political prisoners") and beyond, it's the same age-old supremacist doctrine which earlier fueled Germany's "Beer Hall Putsch" and the Holocaust, South Africa's once all dominant Apartheid, and America's "Jim Crow". So, let's be clear there's nothing "new" about any of this at all. Art - including cinema - is society's subconscious. And in the 1980s, when long-standing ethnic / cultural barriers were being torn down (remember MTV refusing to air black artists until the success of Michael Jackson and Prince forced them too?), there was rising blowback among those who felt they were losing long-held power. And before this blowback was publicly acknowledged (or maybe even realized) by the general public, filmmakers had already picked up on it and addressed the threat in a remarkable number of mainstream films between 1988 - '89 where white supremacists and their doctrine were challenged head-on as a modern day threat: among those films - Costa-Gavras' BETRAYED and MUSIC BOX, Oliver Stone's TALK RADIO, John Frankenheimer's DEAD BANG, Clint Eastwood's PINK CADILLAC, Richard Donner's LETHAL WEAPON 2, along with MISSISSIPPI BURNING, MURDERER'S AMONG US, A DRY WHITE SEASON, TRIUMPH OF THE SPIRIT, HANNA'S WAR and others. And it's remarkable how, when re-watching these films today, they all seem as if they could have been shot as recently as just last week.     Elections both large and small, every time one rolls around we hear the inevitable refrain of how "Never has one been more important!". With America's 2020 Presidential race, however, regardless of where one falls within the political spectrum, we don't think anyone would disagree with that assessment this time around. We're old enough to remember how years ago before a few Presidential elections Roger Ebert & Gene Siskel did a handful of episodes entitled "Films Every President Needs To See Before Taking Office" which included such expected titles as DR. STRANGELOVE, FAIL SAFE and others. Now on the occasion of our 2020 election we present our version directed more at the voters called FILMS EVERY VOTER SHOULD REMEMBER BEFORE ENTERING THE BALLOT BOOTH. Yeah, you'll find a couple you know, but maybe even one or two you've not yet seen ... or of which you may not even be aware. As Samuel L. Jackson said ...     MINI-POD BURIED TREASURE OF THE WEEK: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT WITH RIDLEY SCOTT'S "1492: CONQUEST OF PARADISE" (1992)

    Few historical figures have been as polarizing as Christopher Columbus. So, how does someone create a film which - as if piecing together an historical puzzle with personal journals, newly discovered archaeological and forensics evidence and more - paints a dramatic portrait of both sides of the man: at once a brave and brilliant navigator, explorer and missionary; but ultimately also an obsessed seeker of gold, exploiter of a continent, and slaver? Well, leave it to Ridley Scott. Lauded today as the director of such classic historical dramas as GLADIATOR and KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, as well as more contemporary ones the likes of BLACK HAWK DOWN and AMERICAN GANGSTER, back in 1992 he was mostly known as the man behind highly stylized and extremely pulpish genre films such as ALIEN, BLADE RUNNER, LEGEND and BLACK RAIN. But in a year which saw three other Christopher Columbus films – one another historical drama, one a comedy, and one even an animated family film! - Scott's blend of hardcore fact and fascinatingly plausible speculation, ... which landed in theaters 500 years to the day of Columbus' landing in the "New World", ... was the only one which refused to put the Columbus statue on a pedestal, but chose not to topple it either. Rather he and screenwriter Roselyne Bosch moved it into the filmic equivalent of an interactive museum (so to speak) where it could be placed in context, debated, parceled and argued over as one of the best realized (if not always flattering) examinations of the controversial explorer outside a History Channel documentary.     Some films are perhaps too experimental (or just too ahead of their time) to be understood, ... even by their makers. After winning the Cannes Film Festival's Palm d'or for his 1989 breakout hit SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE, Steven Soderbergh was dubbed the "poster boy of the Sundance generation". Eagerly courted by studios large and small, filmdom eagerly anticipated the wunderkind's next cinematic endeavor. Then when KAFKA hit theaters in November of 1991 there was a loud world-wide collective “What the f**k!” accompanied by a lot of head scratching. Close thematic, visual and tonal kin to Terry Gilliam's earlier BRAZIL, David Cronenberg's later NAKED LUNCH and Alex Proyas' DARK CITY, director Soderbergh and screenwriter Lem Dobbs fashioned KAFKA as their own version of Cronenberg's "Brundle-Fly" - wherein the genomes of different beings were fused together to create an all new one. In this case feeling it impossible to faithfully adapt a Kafka story to the screen “in toto”, they took literary DNA from various works by the author, combined them with references to Kafka's actual life, then stirred them together into a brand new narrative in which the budding author in 1919 Prauge takes place in a freakishly macabre mystery - elements of which would later find their way into some of his most famous stories.A box office failure, and unavailable on home video for almost 20 years, the film has developed a fervent cult following, ... with us among the loudest members of this "misunderstood masterpiece's" cheerleading squad. Soderbergh himself has since even re-evaluated his own film, and has plans to do a new "Midnight Cut" which would make it even more "Rorshach"-like.     Few big budget studio films since the 1970s exemplify the trichotomy of Luis Puenzo's 1989 historical drama / romance adventure / political treatise masquerading as pulp OLD GRINGO. The eagerly anticipated adaptation of Carlos Fuentes' lauded 1985 novel “Gringo Viejo” (which took him 20 years off and on to complete), and from the director of the equally acclaimed 1985 Oscar winning film THE OFFICIAL STORY starred Jane Fonda, Gregory Peck and Jimmy Smits in a three-person-point of view narrative which brought together an American school teacher, a General in the Army of Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution, and aging legendary journalist / novelist Ambrose Bierce (a fictional version of him anyway) in the final days of his life … . The film took a long and winding road to the screen, premiered out of competition at the Cannes film festival - where it was booed, suffered a delayed then incomplete release in the U.S., and ended up as one of the most critically lambasted box office disappointments of the year. But then again so did other films which have since gone on to become essential cinema - among them John Frankenheimer's SECONDS (also booed at Cannes), David Lean's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO - a huge critical piñata when it first opened, and others from FANTASIA and BRINGING UP BABY to BLADE RUNNER and THE THING - all of which were not box office / audience hits upon their initial releases, but which grew in popularity over the years. Does OLD GRINGO deserve such a place in cinema history? We don't know. But we've always felt it was treated incredibly unfair by critics of the day who failed to notice what was really going on below the surface - among the many subtextual themes it's analogy to the Iran-Contra Scandal of the day and more.     Even those who don't subscribe to Cinema 101 "auteur theory" acknowledge that some of the most intriguing films are those wherein a director with a very distinctive and independent cinematic style / stamp / thematic brings that sensibility to what otherwise could be a standard genre programmer, and in so doing elevates it - at least a little - to a more memorable status. Think Donald Cammel's DEMON SEED, Nicolas Roeg's THE WITCHES, and Spike Lee producing TALES FROM THE HOOD, and that'll give a decent impression of the classic caper film (à la OCEAN'S 11 or TOPKAPI) as filtered through the sensibility of END OF THE ROAD director Aram Avakian's 11 HARROWHOUSE. Make no mistake, more than anything HARROWHOUSE is an unabashedly pulp-ish, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE-esque, old-school caper yarn wherein low level American diamond broker Charles Grodin and his thrill seeking ex pat girlfriend Candice Bergen are "coerced" into robbing a (not entirely legal) diamond clearing house in London of 12 billion dollars in undeclared gems stashed in a secret subterranean vault. But Avakian's thriller also manages to be a droll satire on 70s era social geopolitics, especially in regards to the "battle of the classes", ... or perhaps more accurately the "chess game" of the classes.     A throwback to the idea & character-based sci fi of the 1970s, writer / director Paul J. Salamoff's ENCOUNTER on the surface seems a near tropish yarn about a young artist who, after losing his daughter and the ability to walk in an accident, regains the power of his legs after a group of friends encounter a small alien “lifeform” / object after it crash lands in a field. Below the surface, however, it quickly becomes more a rift on Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST - as the pod-like being (which we aren't sure is “good” or “evil”) begins to fulfill the needs - physical and psychological - in the lives of the members of that group, but only … if!From the amount of fun we had on this one you may find it hard to believe, but we were stone sober. Well, kind of, as we quickly became intoxicated by love of the genre - opening with a mini discussion of 70s era sci fi-ers (among them LOGAN'S RUN and WESTWORLD) which not only continue to creatively inspire us all - and Paul particularly on ENCOUNTER - but the creators of other recent independent “throwback” speculative thrillers like MOON, LOOPER and EX MACHINA. We then move to “mini film school” as Paul details his film's origin, the assemblage of his cast (including genre faves Luke Hemsworth and Tom Atkins) and the shoot. And, oh, stay tuned after the end credits for a BONUS SECTION SPOILERS SPECIAL for those who've seen ENCOUNTER - where we talk Easter Eggs implanted within the film's final sequence.     Everyone knows Tab Murphy, ... even if they don't immediately know his name. The Oscar-nominated writer behind GORILLAS IN THE MIST, Disney's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, ATLANTIS, TARZAN and BROTHER BEAR, critically acclaimed D.C. actioners such as BATMAN: YEAR ONE, BATMAN / SUPERMAN: APOCALYPSE, and Warner's much loved 2011 THUNDERCATS revival (see, told 'ya you knew him!) ... . Well, he's something of a film industry rarity. Weaned on classic horror, 60s era TV, 70s Drive-in triple bills and an avalanche of old-school adventure novels, his inspiration springs from venerable staples such as Edgar Rice Burroughs and Sergio Leone, but he's got an inate facility to translate that ageless vibe into new era cinema classics for an all new generation. In this regard there is perhaps no greater example of "Murphy's Law" than Tab's underrated 1995 modern day lost civilization saga - and directorial debut - LAST OF THE DOGMEN starring Tom Berenger and Barbara Hershey. Kinda / sorta "LOST HORIZON meets DANCES WITH WOLVES", he and producer Joel Michaels are presently preparing a new "Director's Edition" Blu-ray set for release next year. And in what proves perfect timing we've managed a sitdown with Tab which falls somewhere between a film school guest professorship ... and a neighborhood watering hole beer summit between movie geeks! ... wherein we candidly dive into his background and earliest creative endeavors, how he went from late night 7/11 clerk to much-sought-after screenwriter, his (at times topsy-turvy) experiences on films such as GORILLAS IN THE MIST and his involvement in the famous Art Buchwald / COMING TO AMERICA case, his writing and directing DOGMEN, the animated films and much more.     Welcome to "SHOOTIN' IT" (Vol. I) - a MOVIE SNEAK mini-podcast wherein Craig and Jim informally kick back to discuss a topic currently at the entertainment industry forefront. While all of those "Spielberg Hates NETFLIX" headlines aren't entirely accurate (the legendary filmmaker loves TV and has produced material for every major network - including NETFLIX! - over the last near 40 years) he was fairly emphatic about wanting to steer the Motion Picture Academy away from nominating films which essentially premiere via streaming after what some call a limited "token" theatrical run. And while both sides of the debate rages (with the Department of Justice even recently weighing in), keep in mind that this really isn't anything new. In the 1970s filmmakers were outraged when Ingmar Bergman's SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE - originally produced as a Swedish mini-series then culled down to a theatrical film for the U.S. market - was deemed ineligible for Oscar consideration. The rule was amended, thus allowing Wolfgang Peterson's DAS BOOT (also edited down from a European mini-series) to be nominated for six Oscars a few years later. Then the rule was later amended yet again - then back-and-forth in various forms - for the next 35 years. While many first came to know her as the mesmerizing "aerial violinist" at the center of Cirque Elioize's 2009 NHL All Star Game pregame show, she had already been a decades long master of the craft. A member of the instrumentalist new wave which combined virtuoso performances with jazz, rock, hip-hop, DJ break beats and more, she and others helped usher out the clichéd image of the stone-faced classical musician, and replaced it with that of the athletic, hip and sexy master of the craft - in the process encouraging an entire new generation to expand their own musical horizons.     FULL "DISCLOSURE": AN UPDATED LOOK AT MICHAEL CRICHTON & BARRY LEVINSON'S (at the time) CONTROVERSIAL SEXUAL HARASSMENT THRILLER

    Directed by Barry Levinson from the novel by Michael Crichton (also the film's producer), and starring Michael Douglas, Demi Moore and Donald Sutherland, DISCLOSURE was one of 1994's biggest box office hits, but at the time was also vilified by some as borderline misogynistic because it featured an antagonist who was a powerful corporate career woman (Moore) accused of the sexual harassment of a man under her (Douglas). And considering the time in which it was released (when "psycho women" films such as FATAL ATTRACTION, SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, THE HAND THE ROCKS THE CRADLE and THE TEMP were the cinematic fad), it's easy to see how it's premise may have sounded as such. But the agenda of Crichton and Levinson's drama (part sexual politics, part high tech mystery, part corporate thriller) was to jolt audiences - particularly men - out of the dangerous complacency of thinking that claims of sexual harassment were "overblown, whiny exaggerations from those who can't keep up with the boys" by shifting the point of reference / putting the shoe on the other foot in making the victim a once powerful corporate male up-and-comer who is now faced in the work place, at home, and even in a courtroom setting with accusations that he's making it all up in an attempt to blackmail his employer; that in some regards he was responsible or could have stopped things if and when he wanted; and also with the possibility that if he proceeds with legal action it could not only jeopardize his own career but that of others around him. Any of this sound familiar? In the wake of recent cases involving Harvey Weinstein, Roger Ailes and others, damned if DISCLOSURE doesn't seem as if it were written and filmed last week.     One of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year, BLADE RUNNER 2049, directed by SICARIO and ARRIVAL's Denis Villeneuve, and produced by the original film's director Ridley Scott, is being hailed by many as "One of the greatest sequel's ever made". And it just may be. We're fairly certain however that more than a few filmgoers will exit the theater scratching their heads and / or pissed to no end as it may not be exactly what they expected. With a near three hour running time BLADE RUNNER 2049 has the luxury to more deeply explore the philosophical and totemic elements of Phillip K. Dick's science fiction universe to a far greater degree than did other films such as TOTAL RECALL, MINORITY REPORT, A SCANNER DARKLY, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE and even Scott's original BLADE RUNNER itself. But whether that "exploration" is interpreted by the viewer as pretentious or fascinating as hell (we fall into the later category) is a matter of, not unlike the scenario in which the characters in Dick's universe often find themselves, perception, world view and the mental / philosophical baggage said individual brings into the theater along with that extra large tub of popcorn.     Quentin Tarantino once famously stated "When people ask me if I went to film school, I say 'No, I went to films'". And since the near extinction of the drive-in and inner city grindhouse triple feature, those Rite Aid, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Dollar Store DVD dump bins have become the go-to place for those eager to experiment with off-center cinema, ... or at least, for a buck or two, take a flying leap on something (major studio or independent) which one may not have otherwise been willing to shell out $20 to see on the big screen, ... especially as each month Netflix (reaching a cap on bandwidth) deletes more and more titles from it's queue. Not huge fans of awards season in general (we don't like how, intentional or not, they tend to divide films into "important" and "unimportant") we pay tribute to films not necessarily RELEASED in 2016, but which we, through the wonder & magic of the cheapie bin, first VIEWED in 2016. Call it an awards show for movies many don't give a damn about.
