Laura Merli! Comedian! Delight! Human with a new standup special out now! ABOUT THE NEW SPECIAL WHICH IS ALSO HER DEBUT SPECIAL, "BELLY SLAPPIN' FUN!"   After cutting her teeth for 8 years in the indie comedy scene, Brooklyn comedy-favorite Laura Merli has amassed over 2 million likes on TikTok. Laura specializes in set-up/punch-line jokes and one-liners rather than storytelling, in the vein of her influences Mitch Hedberg and Maria Bamford, although Laura adds her own distinctive and unique flavor. This style lets her cover A LOT of ground: drugs, sex, family/childhood, her ADHD/autism, and her dog. While the jokes emanate from a wide array of departure points, the humor centers around the awkwardness and absurdity of being alive. Laura's delivery is distinctive as well - people describe her voice as deadpan but she promises she is being very expressive!    Since childhood Merli has been enamored with acting and writing. Although to Merli, improv initially seemed like “paying to embarrass yourself”, she finally followed the lead of some friends and tried classes at ImprovAsylum. She had a great experience and ended up obsessed, but was still wanting the ability to write before stepping onto the stage. Realizing this pointed toward stand-up, Laura got her start at a friend's variety show called “What Else You Gonna Do Wednesday Night” and never looked back!   Merli has taken her art and career in her own hands, refining her material all around NYC, and on the road via The Awkward Route Tour with fellow stand up Freddy G (Sirius XM, NPR). With  comedy well-suited to the TikTok format, Belly Slappin' Fun is eagerly anticipated by her large online following who, along with fans-to-be will get their dose of Belly Slappin' Fun on July 18!    ABOUT LAURA MERLI: Laura Merli is an NYC-based standup, actress, and writer. She amassed over 2 million likes on TikTok, was “passed” at New York Comedy Club, has headlined the “Don't Tell” and “Modelface” comedy shows, and appeared at the New York Comedy festival as well as the Women in Comedy Festival. Every third Thursday, she hosts the Good Girl stand up show at Friends & Lovers, one of the hottest alt-comedy spots in Brooklyn. She has performed at top-tier venues across the city including The Bell House, Littlefield, Caveat, and more.   As someone who didn't start comedy until their late 20s, Laura has held a wide variety of odd jobs including cashier, ebay store photographer, project manager, zombie in an escape room, business analyst, and carnival worker (her grandparents family business). She has since written for and acted on sketch house teams at the PIT and Improv Boston as well as Reductress, The Hard Times, and McSweeney's. Merli has hosted/written/produced videos for the female-focused humor brand Cheezcake.  ABOUT THIS PODCAST!: You can listen to it! We had a great chat! You can have a great listen! I'm at a TED event when Sarah Silverman takes the stage. She launches into her comedy set and as she gets going, I notice something interesting. A couple of jokes in, some people in the audience are already laughing hysterically. But others are fidgeting and looking uncomfortable with some of her content. My husband Mark turns to me and says, “Stand-up comedy is hard.” I agree and whisper back, “Yeah - that's why they invented Dad jokes. That's much easier - they're like training wheels for laughter.” Stand-up on the other hand is another league and I'd rather leave to the professionals - like my special guest today. Emily Walsh is a stand-up comedian who performs all over the world. And today on the Storytelling School Podcast, she shares how the worlds of comedy and story intertwine from her perspective. In this episode, you'll hear about approaches to comedy shows and being a different version of yourself on stage (even if just slightly), as well as hear answers to questions such as: How do you navigate the challenging waters of potentially offensive jokes to your audience? What role does story play in comedic content creation? How can you ease people into your jokes and get them comfortable with you as you tell your story? And what's the one thing you don't want to leave your audience with? What you will learn in this episode: What the first thing is that you must learn in any performance or presentation How to discover the kind of material that will work for your audience most of the time What you can do to re-engage a disengaged part of your audience Who is Emily? Emily Walsh is a comedian who performs nightly in bars and comedy clubs across New York City. Originally from Boston, Emily moved to New York City after college to pursue her dream of painting scenery for theatre, film and television. She still paints sometimes because comedy doesn't provide health insurance. Emily was recently featured on Kevin Hart's Lyft Comics on Peacock. Her festival credits include HBO's Women in Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, West End Festival in Atlanta, Boston Comedy Festival, the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin, and the Rogue Island Comedy Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. She also co-hosts the podcast Alone at Lunch, part of the Morbid podcast network on Wondery, and hosts and co-produces a monthly show at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn called Golden Ticket. In this week's episode, both our storytellers share stories about their lives' fork-in-the-road moments. Part 1: As a child who loves biology and has Caribbean immigrant parents, Calvin Cato feels pressure to become a doctor. Part 2: Shane Hanlon can't help but compare his life choices to those of his hometown best friend. Calvin S. Cato got his comedic start with the Wesleyan University stand-up comedy troupe Punchline and then transferred his unique brand of humor to New York City in 2006. He has performed all across the United States and has even crossed the border into Canada. His television appearances include the Game Show Network, Oxygen's My Crazy Love, National Geographic's Brain Games, and an unaired pilot for Vice Media called Emergency Black Meeting. In 2017, Calvin was named one of Time Out New York's Queer Comics of Color to Watch Out For. His comedy has been featured in numerous festivals including San Francisco Sketchfest, Austin's Out of Bounds Comedy Festival, Brooklyn Pride, Gotham Storytelling Festival, FlameCon, and the Women in Comedy Festival. In addition, you may have heard him overshare on popular podcasts including Keith and The Girl, The Beige Philip Show, RISK!, Guys We F*cked, Las Culturistas, Tinder Tales or the video game themed podcast he co-produced called the Playable Characters Podcast (featured in AV Club and Splitsider). Most recently, Calvin was published in Kweendom, an anthology of essays by queer comedians and entertainers. Published in early 2021, the book is available on Amazon and other online book retailers. Okay culmmies, this one gets a little trippy.  THE Fareeha Khan is here and we're not gonna lie... this episode is beautiful. This episode is about... going upstate, fixing your brain, Fantastic Funghi on Netflix,  chainsawing ALL day, a pregnancy reveal, communing with the universe in a hammock,  decaying, CONFIDENT GIRLS, your 4-digit PIN code, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the 6-layer skort. Fareeha Khan is a comedian and artist based in New York City. She's been on Comedy Central's “Tight Five” presented by Ilana Glazer, has toured her stand up with Man Repeller, and was featured on the NBC showcase at the Women in Comedy Festival. Her humor writing has appeared on MTV Decoded, Reductress, and in the book Every Body. She has acted in sketches on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Comedy Central, and Adult Swim, as well as several indie short films, including 1/30, which was executive produced by Lena Waithe. Her short film she created, wrote, and starred in, Break Up, Baby, was a NoBudge 2021 pick and Vulture said she has “an enchanting onscreen presence” in it, which was pretty cool. She was a writer's assistant on After After Party, a Refinery29 produced digital show in 2018. In 2017 she was chosen to participate in the Riot x TBS Comedy Writers Lab. She has a B.A. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, which she usually tells people is a poli-sci degree because that sounds more real. She was born in Karachi, Pakistan, yet in a plot twist, she grew up in South Carolina and Virginia. Hence the outcast vibes.
