Not only are we off the plot today, we aren't really gardening either. In this special edition of Digging, Flo is spending time with Penny Rimbaud in his garden. Penny is a founding member of the anarcho-punk band Crass and performance group EXIT, as well as a poet, writer and philosopher. In this episode Penny gives Flo a tour of the garden and ‘sheds' at Dial House, the radical open house he established in the 1960s. They discuss his approach to meditation and philosophy as well as Penny's various tattoos. They talk about the formative power of Paul Rep's book on Zen, the early influence of the film The Inn of the Sixth Happiness and the fact that Valerie Solanas's Scum Manifesto was the book most often stolen by Dial House guests. ¿No somos hombres? Somos SAN ONOFRE. Tim Hodgkinson contradijo el aserto de Pen... Cent´anni, cumpari. ¡Nah, ya nos desearon Arturo Bassick y su can Paco otros 999 episodios! Sí, R2D2, que lo que unió el Punk Rock no lo separe la Country music. Yee-haw!
Hugh Vivian - Omega Tribe - in conversation with David Eastaugh https://omegatribe.bandcamp.com Omega Tribe are an anarcho-punk band, in 1981. With the roles of Hugh Vivian on guitar and vocals, Daryl Hardcastle on bass, Pete Fender on guitar and Pete Shepherd on drums, their first EP, Angry Songs, was produced by Penny Rimbaud and Pete Fender for Crass Records in 1982. Their subsequent LP, No Love Lost, won the hearts of many hardened anarchos and secured their place in anarcho-punk history. A far more melodic style, encouraged by producer and new guitarist Pete Fender created a highly influential template that many other bands were to build on.

In this episode, Index’s associate editor Mark Frary talks to musician, poet and activist Penny Rimbaud, who founded anarchistic punk band Crass in the 1970s. He talks about why the battle isn’t against Donald Trump but against all US presidencies and why the British are the most repressed in the world. He says the Sex Pistols and the Clash were only playing at being angry. He also says everyone should change their name, as he did, and why his poetic namesake is the inspiration behind his new album, Arthur Rimbaud in Verdun, now out on One Little Independent Records. The high-concept album is based on a fiction constructed by Penny which places the French poet Arthur Rimbaud (who died in 1891) at the historic and tragic battle of Verdun in 1916. It is influenced by the sounds of John Coltrane and the visuals of Jackson Pollock.

Penny Rimbaud in conversation with David Eastaugh Penny "Lapsang" Rimbaud, is a writer, poet, philosopher, painter, musician and activist. He was a member of the performance art groups EXIT and Ceres Confusion, and in 1972 was co-founder of the Stonehenge Free Festival, together with Phil Russell aka Wally Hope. In 1977, alongside Steve Ignorant, he co-founded and played drums in the seminal anarchist punk band Crass, who disbanded in 1984. Up until 2000 he devoted himself almost entirely to writing, returning to the public platform in 2001 as a performance poet working alongside Australian saxophonist Louise Elliott and a wide variety of jazz musicians under the umbrella of Penny Rimbaud's Last Amendment.
CRASS co-founder Penny Rimbaud on anarchy in the UK music scene, the politics of punk music, and why the love is the fundamental condition of anarchism.
Gee Vaucher isn't perhaps as well known as some of her punk peers, but she should be: she's one of the artists who defined punk's visuals of protest in the 1970s, especially with her arresting photo-montage covers for Crass, the cult band and art collective she was part of, who put anarchy into practice. She had a stint in Manhattan as a political illustrator for The New York Times and she's also designed album sleeves for bands like The Charlatans and experimental hip-hop group Tackhead. Her piece for the latter, Oh America, in which the Statue of Liberty covers her face with her hands, went viral and was published on the front cover of newspapers when Trump was elected as President of the United States. Gee's art continues to be confrontational, whether she's painting or, as she shows us, making an absolutely enormous book filled with millions of hand-drawn stick figures – one for every single person that died in World War I. She is radical in every sense of the word. In this episode, Gee invites us to Dial House, on the edge of Epping Forest in Essex – a tumbling old cottage with a difference: it's run by Gee and her collaborator Penny Rimbaud as an anarchic “centre for radical creativity” where anyone can turn up at any time for a cup of tea and a chat. So that's just what we did, to hear Gee talk about her working relationship with Penny, why punk was a disappointment and the 'perverseness' of her art. This episode was produced by Mae-Li Evans.
