Australian icon Tex Perkins takes us through his legendary career, from The Cruel Sea & The Beasts recent works, to wild ARIA award nights, his atrocious habits with vinyl records, reissuing his works on vinyl and lots more.  Topics Include: Tex Perkins rehearsing with The Cruel Sea for upcoming gigs. Bringing back "deep cuts" from 30 years ago. Band already prepared the songs before his arrival. Feels like "personal karaoke" returning to old material. Gains fresh perspective on older songs with time. Sometimes writes songs instinctively, not from personal experience. Song "Hard For You" channeled rage he hadn't experienced. Recorded with Kid Congo Powers from Bad Seeds. ARIA Awards incident clarified - didn't stab anyone. Hit someone with a glass at an after-party. Molly Meldrum was present during the altercation. Lived with Jules Normington of Phantom Records. Paid rent by washing Jules' dishes. Had access to Jules' extensive record collection. Especially enjoyed 60s punk and garage rock records. Met John Foy, who was pedantic about record handling. Music scattered across many different record labels. Controls some albums, but not all. Universal owns The Cruel Sea and some Beasts albums. Axeman's Jazz recorded and mixed in six hours. Recent album "Ultimo" recorded differently - basic tracks then laptop. Modern recording allows more experimentation without studio costs. Prefers vinyl album lengths around 18-20 minutes per side. Three Legged Dog being released on three vinyl sides. Spanish reissues were "handshake deals" with unclear accounting. Appreciates unashamedly Australian content in newer bands. Newer bands don't hide their Australian accents. Never experienced censorship of his music. Had releases in different regions without his knowledge. No accounting from Big Time label after bankruptcy. Performed with The Legendary Stardust Cowboy in 1985. "Ledge" known for having "world's worst record" - Paralyzed. Backed Ledge with James Baker, Spencer Jones, Lachlan McLeod. Ledge progressively stripped during his performance. Threw Frisbee paper plates with drawings into the audience. Welcome to the final episode of Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions' 2022 season. We saved a great one for the finale: Kid Congo Powers. Born Brian Tristan in La Puente, California, he eventually adopted the stage name which appears on the cover of Some New Kind of Kick, a new memoir that documents his time in The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and The Gun Club, with whom he's credited for “excessive feedback, guitar and slide guitar, whirling whirlies, maracas and ancient mutterings.” And that's not all it covers. Kid's story is a layered one. The book, written with Chris Campion, gets into all of it, including frank examinations of queer identity, struggles with addiction, and his connection to the late Jeffrey Lee Pierce—who's dream visit inspired his 2020 Pink Monkey Birds Latin psych epic “He Walked In.”  At once hilarious, tender, and possessing an almost dreamlike spiritual quality, it's a great read. And it arrives alongside two new records: Summer Forever and Ever, the second album by Wolfmanhattan Project, his trio with Mick Collins of The Dirtbombs and Gories and Bob Bert, formerly of Sonic Youth, and Kid Congo Powers and The Near Death Experience Live in St. Kilda, a live concert taped in Australia. Both will be out physically in 2023—but you can listen to them digitally now. Or rather, after you finish this conversation between host Jason P. Woodbury and Kid, fellow Arizonans. Thanks so much for listening to Transmissions. Our 2022 season closes with this episode. We'll be back in early 2023, keep your eyes on Aquarium Drunkard for more info and check out the Patreon for bonus content we'll be sharing over the next couple months. This season of Transmissions is concluded.

Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Writing about the Bedhead career retrospective 1992-1998 for Pitchfork, writer Mark Richardson put it nicely: “Bedhead had no time for or interest in anything extraneous to the music…And this is what it sounded like—serious, intense, smart, beautiful, occasionally frightening...” Today on the show, we are joined by the Kadane Brothers, who founded Bedhead in 1991 in Dallas, Texas. Matt Kadane calls in from his place in New York, where he teaches history, and Bubba Kadane from Texas, where he composes music for film and television.  One of the defining bands of the “slowcore” movement, Bedhead had three guitars but was sparse, melding post-punk to humming Velvets-inspired intensity. Following the end of Bedhead, they formed another pioneering indie rock band, The New Year, and they've dabbled in side projects all along the way, including Overseas, with David Bazan of Pedro the Lion and Will Johnson of Centro-matic, and Bubba's ambient project Sigh of Relief. On this episode of Transmissions, we dig into Bedhead's history and idiosyncratic approach, exploring how they worked “remotely” and by telephone long before remote work was standard, the space carved out by Bedhead's unique sound, their cover of Cher's “Believe,” and much more.  Thanks for checking out Transmissions. In this episode we welcome the delightful Kid Congo Powers, all the way from his home in Tucson, and ask him to talk about his former lives in the Gun Club, the Cramps and the Bad Seeds — as detailed in the riveting new memoir Some New Kind of Kick. The man born Brian Tristan looks back to his teen fanboy years from Frank Zappa to the New York Dolls, plus his memories of the L.A. glitter scene at Rodney's English Disco. He describes how it felt — as a gay Mexican American — to be a misfit among mainly white misfits on the punk scenes in L.A. and New York. He also explains how the Gun Club was conceived after he met Jeffrey Lee Pierce while queuing for a 1979 Pere Ubu show at the Whisky. We hear how Kid was then headhunted by the Cramps' Lux and Ivy, and what it was like to be part of their ghoulish B-movie aesthetic. We similarly learn how he was recruited (and "cast") as one of Nick Cave's drug-addled Bad Seeds in mid-'80s Berlin. From the decline and premature death of Jeffrey Lee Pierce — via Kid's own eventual long-term sobriety — we shift into the rarefied and erudite world of Brian Eno, an iconic glam influence on the young Brian Tristan. Clips from Mark Sinker's 1992 audio interview with pop's resident egghead are heard, leading in turn to discussion of Eno's collaborations with Robert Fripp and Toby Amies' remarkable new King Crimson documentary.Mark talks us through pieces about the Stones' 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' (1968), classic-blues septuagenarian Victoria Spivey(1975), the Police (1979) and Joe Bataan & Arthur Baker (1996) after which Jasper concludes the episode with quotes from pieces on bodyguard-to-the-stars Michael Francis (2003) and the "rise and rise" of Pharrell Williams (2015).Many thanks to special guest Kid Congo Powers; Some New Kind of Kick is available this week in all good bookshops. If I were to pull magic out of a hat, and say "Who could tell the story from the underbelly of the L.A. Punk scene from it's inception, and tell it from the point of being queer and hispanic?" You would have Kid Congo Powers. He is an accidental guitarist, who became very successful because he did it just for fun. HE was a fashion fan, inspired by David Bowie, and Patti Smith, who just "Lived" the Los Angeles underground scene long enough to become inspired to start playing music. (By force, as told to start playing to stop annoying his friend Lydia Lunch for a while). He played in "The Gun Club" , The Punk Rockabilly band "The Cramps", "Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds", and now his current project "The Pink Monkey Birds". He just published his memoire "Some New Kind Of Kick" that is a fantastic read, it goes WAY TOO FAST at times, but packs a punch with experiences and great memories, strangely enough, I have had so many just like it, I was relating to his world time and time again. He doesn't share scandal, or complain about anyone or anything, only the inspiring and full throttle experiences, and they keep coming. Clips from Mark Sinker's 1992 audio interview with pop's resident egghead are heard, leading in turn to discussion of Eno's collaborations with Robert Fripp and Toby Amies' remarkable new King Crimson documentary.Mark talks us through pieces about the Stones' 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' (1968), classic-blues septuagenarian Victoria Spivey (1975), the Police (1979) and Joe Bataan & Arthur Baker (1996) after which Jasper concludes the episode with quotes from pieces on bodyguard-to-the-stars Michael Francis (2003) and the "rise and rise" of Pharrell Williams (2015).Many thanks to special guest Kid Congo Powers; Some New Kind of Kick is available this week in all good bookshops. For more Kid, follow him on Twitter and Instagram @kidcongopowers.Pieces discussed: The Cramps, The Gun Club, Art Laboe, Brian Eno audio, Robert Fripp, The Stones, Arthur Baker, 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', Victoria Spivey, The Police, The Cramps live, Joey Ramone, Kiss and Cher's minder, Pharrell Williams and Jon Hopkins.

This was a Patreon exclusive and Part 2 of my episode 232 conversation with the great Kid Congo. Often the initial recordings go much longer than what is released. I always put the extended interviews or part to on the patreon page. This lived on patreon for almost a years. You can go to themattdwyer.com for extra content. I will be releasing more patreon exclusive content for the holidays. There will be a blog that will tell you what is released and how to get it. The part one we went into a lot of Kid's history. Part 2 we dug a little deeper. Enjoy.Kid Congo Powers is the co-founder of the Gun Club, played with the Cramps, was a Bad Seed with Nick Cave and of course Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. His influence and creativity is vast. It is an honor to have him on Conversations With Dwyer where he talks about the early days Punk, starting The Gun Club, living around the world, and the challenges of writing a memoir. From James: I have a soft spot for bands that at their core started as best friends or brothers/sisters growing up together and playing music. Minutemen had D. Boon and Mike Watt, Devo had the Mothersbaugh and Casale brothers, and The Gun Club had Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Kid Congo Powers. Except in the case of The Gun Club this process was interrupted when Kid Congo joined The Cramps before they could record their first album, Fire of Love. This continued through their second album Miami, but then Kid came back for the third album, Las Vegas Story, which is my favorite. All of their albums are special, but I think the combination of Jeffrey Lee and Kid Congo on guitars and The Bags rhythm section of Patricia Morrison and Terry Graham was the best lineup they ever had. Also, for this album they moved past their blues/punk origins and ventured into new territory, stretching out artistically and making an amazing album in the process. Las Vegas Story is one of my favorite records of all time and an underdog even with Gun Club fans. I hope you enjoy the music and our music nerd discussion!Listen to the expanded version of the album here: Las Vegas Story by The Gun Club

Punk rock resumes don’t get much better than Kid Congo Powers’. The Southern California-born musician has been playing music professional for nearly 40 years, since the then-president of the Ramones fanclub was recruited by Jeffrey Lee Pierce for the band that would soon become the Gun Club.Soon after, Powers was recruited by fellow punk rock weirdos, The Cramps as rhythm guitarist, staying with the band for two of their most influential records, Psychedelic Jungle and Smell of Female. After another multi-album stint with The Gun Club, the musician joined up with Nick Cave, recording two records as a member of The Bad Seeds. For the past decade, Powers has served as the front man for The Pink Monkey Birds, an amalgamations of decades of music influence, including the Southern California Chicano rock sound that helped ignite his love of music.  To celebrate the release of the band’s latest, La Araña Es La Vida, Powers sat down for a far reaching interview about his long and storied career.

It was important to me that we have a special guest for episode 100. They Might Be Giants fitted the job perfectly, a band that played an incredibly important role in the early development of my musical tastes, as strange and idiosyncratic as they might ultimately become. With episode 200, the camera gets pulled make even further, to a man and a magazine that, for better or worse, let an indelible mark on my impressionable young mind, as they have for generations before and since. Weeks before I sat down to record this interview in Al Jaffee’s amazing Manhattan studio, upcoming guest Kid Congo Powers made reference to a club “looking like a scene out of Mad Magazine.” I knew what he meant immediately. The strange cross section of the human experience filtered through the lens of the Usual Gang of Idiots. And at their center is Jaffee. The cartoonist is now 95 (“closer to 96,” as he handily points out during the interview), with his signature fold-in having appeared in virtual every issue between 1964 and 2008, along with his other mainstays like "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions.” The longest working cartoonist in history kindly agreed to sit down for wide ranging interview about life, death, cartooning and the importance of a steady gig. It’s one my absolute highlights of doing the show and great way to spend episode 200.

Isaiah Mitchell: Isaiah and his beloved Fender Stratocaster have been a legendary pairing that have collectively created creamy psychedelic sounds for records from such bands as Earthless, Golden Void, Howlin’ Rain and Black Elk Medicine Band. He was gifted with his first guitar at the age of Eight, but it wasn’t until his early teens when he’d heard Jimi Hendrix and had his mind blown that he decided what sort of lifestyle he wanted to persue; it was that of a face-melting, hair-swirling solo guitarist. In September 2016, he booked himself a tour of Australia and enlisted the help of Melbourne psych-rock 3-piece Seedy Jeezus to help fill out the jam-filled aura that surrounds him. This particular set was performed live-to-air in Melbourne on PBS 106.7FM’s Pojama People program and is filled with songs that have influenced Isaiah as a musician since he first picked up a guitar, as well some of his own solo works. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 21st of August 2016. Engineered by Jeremy Smith. Kid Congo Powers and his band of Pink Monkey Birds: To his mother, he’s called Brian, but to the rest of the world his name is Kid Congo Powers and his name has been attached to bands such as The Gun Club, The Cramps and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. The Pink Monkey Birds started backing up Kid Congo in the mid-2000’s and together they’ve release five albums, touring around Australia in 2016 on the back of their latest album ‘La Araña Es La Vida’, from which this particular set was documented from by PBS 106.7FM’s Studio 5 Live crew. This band is the very example of the sound that gets created when you mix 60’s Chicano rock, southern soul and psychedelic funk. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 23rd of August 2016. Engineered by Paul Maybury and Alicia Saye. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 13th of November 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
