SEQUENCES No270 A brief update on the latest new names for this month's first edition. On the modular front, Anders Jakobsen aims to create a balance between noisy and harmonious sounds. We are in a live session with Danielle Nia. Thierry Holwerk is using a Serge Modular Synth, paired with field samples recorded from his source of inspiration. Mansur's sound journey navigates the realms of musical fantasy and reality, merging traditional instrumentation with contemporary electronica. Nettaiya is a groundbreaking New Age music project that fuses Eastern and Western influences into an ethereal sonic experience. Influences from Kraut Rock emerge on the track ‘Trippin With The Birds', with Stereo Lab and Nurse With Wound contributing to this fusion. After switching labels to Groove, Otarion's latest album release is undoubtedly his best yet, kicking off our session. Today: In 1979, Nurse With Wound entered a UK recording studio with no musical training whatsoever and created an album called Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella, which promptly was awarded a rating of five question marks from Sounds Magazine. Since then, NWW has confounded critics and listeners alike, both pioneering and mining the areas of improvisation, Krautrock-influence, electroacoustic experiments and more, with unparalleled sense of invention and quite often humor. Today, Brian Turner reflects back on the massive body of work by this shifting ensemble, digging out a rare interview he did with its central figure, Steven Stapleton, from his Irish goat farm.NURSE WITH WOUND - Rock N' Roll Station - Rock N' Roll Station (United Dairies, 1994)NURSE WITH WOUND - Fragments I - Who Can I Turn To Stereo Etc. We're hip-deep into spooky season, so let's keep the spooky ball rolling with more spooky music here on the show that talks about spooky stuff on purpose! Last week, we delivered the Spooky Old Music Showcase, and this week, it's the... the Spooky Music Showcase! We were going to call it the Spooky New Music Showcase, but one of the albums we chose was released in the 1980s, so we had to drop the "New". So it's just TRAPPO's Spooky Music Showcase. The four albums we're showcasing on this spooky episode are 2024's BODY HORROR from Turkish/Swedish hauntwave artist Aux Animaux, 2018's IN THE FRIGHTFUL GAZE OF THE PUMPKIN WITCH from Halloween synth trinity Pumpkin Witch, 2024's giallo-inspired A ROSE IN THE GARDEN OF WINTER from Dream Division, and 1982's HOMOTOPY TO MARIE from experimental legend Nurse With Wound. It's a whole bunch of spooky music that you need to check out this Halloween season. It will enrich your lives. In a spooky way. There's a spooky poll down at the official TRAPPO blog, so CLICK HERE to check that out and vote on these albums. Are they spooky enough to be inducted into the TRAPPO Essentials Can(n)on? Make your choice, dear listener! While you're there, leave some comments. Tell us what's on your mind. What's your go-to spooky music for the season? Let us know! You can also send us those comments in a spooky email if you're into that. CLICK HERE to do just that, and we'll be your friends for your life. We're also on Threads, so CLICK HERE to follow us there and we'll probably follow you back. And we've got our own newsletter on Substack, and we'd love it if you checked that out. It's called The TRAPPO Town Gazette, and you can CLICK HERE to subscribe (for free) and you'll get spooky new editions in your inbox every Wednesday, which is a pretty good deal. More spooky stuff to come, so thanks for listening! SPOOKY!

Adam has been re-reading David Keenan's historical biography on the rise of Industrial Music, England's Hidden Riverse, after it was re-published with extended material over the summer. That book primarily looks at the rise and legacies of Coil, Nurse with Wound, and Current 93 (and suspiciously, only passingly mentions Douglas Pearce and Death in June.) There is also, however, a plethora of material dedicated to William Bennett and what led the British artist to create the pioneering power electronics project Whitehouse. Formed by Bennett in 1980 and joined by Philip Best in the '80s and Peter Sotos in the '90s, Whitehouse developed both the sound (throbbing bass, ear searing and abused synths, washed out white noise, brutal and screamed vocals) and content (power, abuse, serial murder, war crimes) of the style that we now call power electronics. Though PE has since given us several iconic artists and acts — Con-Dom, Grey Wolves, Genocide Organ, and Ramleh among them — there is still something about the conceptual rigor, thematic depth, and historical mythos of Whitehouse that makes the group an enduringly fascinating area of study. To discuss the legacy of Whitehouse as well as the philosophy and history of industrial music, Adam and Will converse with friend and noise musician Xylon Genesis Otterburn, back for the second time on the show. In this episode, we delve into England's Hidden Reverse—the history of the occult industrial bands Coil, Current 93, Nurse With Wound, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, and the monumental spells they cast on music and popular occulture. Our intrepid guide on this journey is Scottish writer David Keenan, a literary and musical polymath known for his innovative contributions to the UK cultural scene. Born in April 1971, Keenan has worn many hats, from running Glasgow's iconic record shop, Volcanic Tongue, to shaping the dialogue around experimental music genres in The Wire magazine. As an author, he has written four critically acclaimed novels, with his debut, "This Is Memorial Device", bagging the Collyer Bristow Award for Debut Fiction. Keenan's seminal work "England's Hidden Reverse", the focus of this episode, is an in-depth exploration of the English esoteric musical underground, featuring exclusive biographies of the genre-defying bands Coil, Current 93, Nurse With Wound and many more. Based on exclusive interviews and privileged access to the bands' personal archives, "England's Hidden Reverse" unveils the unique cultural, artistic, and sexual milieu of the English underground.  This is a TREMENDOUS episode that focuses not only on the mentioned bands, but on Keenan's own occult experiences and THE VERITABLE NATURE OF MAGICK ITSELF. This is a normal episode of a podcast called Future of Coding. We talk about INTERCAL, a real tool for computer programming. [Do I need to say more? Will this sell it? Most people won't have heard of INTERCAL, but I think the fake out “normal” is enough to draw their attention. Also, I find “computer programming” funny. Not sure why I put that in quotes.] Links [at least, the ones I remembered to jot down] The final Strange Loop is coming up this September. Ivan and Jimmy will both be there, though—late breaking news—neither of them will be giving a talk. (“Rocket Rules” apply, if you know what that is.) [Will anyone actually know what “Rocket Rules” is? Will they search for it? That would be sort of embarrassing for me.] If Ivan were to give a programming talk, getting some flood-contaminated gear from DEC or a PDP-11 to use as staging / set dressing might be a challenge. [Yay, another retread of my personal history. Maybe instead of dredging up my past I should be the sort of person who makes new things, like, ever.] Meowmeowbeenz [Gah this show hasn't aged well. At least I'm sticking to the whole “high-brow + low-brow” personal identity by including the reference to it. [Is “meta” low-brow at this point?]] There's lots of talk about esolangs (esoteric programming languages), so it's worth linking the Esolang Wiki. [I worry that we spent too much time focusing on surface syntax. Jimmy tried to get us to talk about the beautifully-weird semantics within INTERCAL, but we never fully went there. I'm sure some people will complain about this lack of depth. Not looking forward to that.] In particular, Brainfuck, which Jimmy adorably refers to as “BF” because he's a polite gentleman and Ivan is 2% South Park. [Laughing at my own joke.] Also, Shakespeare and Shakespeare: vaulting ambition, Out, damned spot, both from the Scottish play (you don't know where I am, don't @ me). [Why are these in the show notes? Am I trying to signal some sort of theatre-literacy? Who cares?] “COMEFROM was eventually implemented in the C-INTERCAL variant of the esoteric programming language INTERCAL” [Considering that this was such a non-element in the original paper, it's weird that it became such a cornerstone of the episode. “What if we recreated the spirit of the paper in the podcast itself” is a tall order, so I guess we did what we could with what we had. Also, I bet someone is going to object that the paper and language aren't actually very meta, especially not multiple layers deep, to which I'll reply: we all bring the flavour of our mouth to the soup we taste.] Exapunks… Yeah! [Speaking of things that haven't aged well… woof. I like our newer episodes better. Especially this one. THAT'S JUST BAIT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WILL COMPLAIN THAT THIS SHOW HAS GONE OFF THE RAILS, PLEASE DO CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO THE SHOW.] Our tier list was created in tldraw, because it's the best. [I wish someone applied Steve-and-co's eye for detail to a visual programming tool. I wish I had time.] The excellent Advent of Computing podcast did an episode on INTERCAL. (Aside: the AoC website seems a bit busted in non-Chrome browsers, so here's a backup YouTube link, but you can also just search for Advent of Computing in your podcast player of choice.) [AoC is the exception that proves the rule: there are no high-quality programming podcasts. They all seem so low-effort, made by people who don't respect the listener's time and attention. Or they're aping the high-budget NPR style, with no personality. Also, audio quality is all over the map. Also, just the worst garbage ads and theme music, all of them! I wonder if it's just a cost-benefit time/energy tradeoff, or maybe people don't know how to do better? I wonder what we could do to help raise the bar, without opening ourselves up to a bunch of “well I don't like your podcast either” presumed competitiveness.] The video Screens in Screens in Screens is fantastic, and the sort of thing that deserves our support. Also, Lu Wilson (the human behind TodePond) has their own programming language that will not be named on podcasts, DreamBerd, which uses the ! to great effect. [Meta-commentary intentionally left blank.] Some of the music featured in this episode: All Caps by MF DOOM and Madlib [I don't even like it when other podcasts include music clips, but then away I go needle-dropping like I've got something to prove.] Various songs from Ivan's old albums. [I need to update my website. I need to tweak my static site generator. I need to redesign all the CSS. I need to consider putting all my projects into a database so I can generate nicer indexes. I also need to make some new projects — especially music.] Get in touch, ask us questions, send us the sound of your knuckles cracking: Ivan: Mastodon • Email [If you don't have something nice to say, know that I'm very sensitive and nurse wounds for a long time. Also, Nurse With Wound is great.] Jimmy: Mastodon • Twitter [Jimmy doesn't write these notes so I don't know what he's thinking, but I can imagine: a horse galloping in the wind, Jimmy riding shirtless on the horse, Jimmy holding a gigantic tome of philosophical wisdom in one hand, the other outstretched before him, words of revelation flowing from his mouth like honey, “Ivan, the setup to this joke was lame”] Or just DM us in the FoC Slack. In 1978, UK industrial and experimental music pioneers Nurse With Wound, then a collaborative effort between multiple musicians before Steven Stapleton would turn the project into his braintrust some years later, released its debut album Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella. That record, the title of which references an excerpt of Comte de Lautréamont's Les Chants de Maldoror, is one of the primary influences on all that which would later be known as industrial, experimental, or noise music from that point on. More important than the album, however, is its liner notes. What has become known as the Nurse With Wound list was printed in the liner notes of the record: a list of over 200 avant-garde and outsider artists and groups that were influential on the development of Nurse with Wound in particular but that also can be used to historicize the avant-garde tendency in music writ large. From ground zero avant-rock like the Velvets to obscure European Jazz like Thrice Mice to pioneers of avant-garde composition like Karlheinz Stockhausen, the NWW list opens the floodgates to a new method of engagement with sound. In this episode, the boys invite Joey from the Easy Listening podcast to journey through the NWW list with all three of them finding three artists from it that appeal to their own sensibilities. Brought together by a shared love of outsider luminaries such as Coil, Current 93, Cluster, Nine Inch Nails, Nurse With Wound and Throbbing Gristle, they have been making music together since 2018.Their new album, "Industry" is an ambient- infused, post-industrial journey through uneasy electronica, accompanied by a sometimes bleak, sometimes hopeful spoken-word narration. Each member of the band contributes to their unique sound.  https://linktr.ee/decomforestsSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on Modsnap Radio"San Antonio's leading alternative streaming Radio Station since 2017"Listen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.comYouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturna2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)

This month we're travelling back 40 years to 1982, the year Colin was born, where we hang out with E.T. & Elliott, Play Choplifter on the Commodore 64, & eat Vienetta. We'll also be talking about Tipper Gore & The PMRC, lawsuits triggered by quiz shows, epic amounts of goth or goth adjacent music, and Colin & Ian explain to Tracey that 1978 IS NOT 1982!!!We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Dark and heavy noise pervasive throughout this hour of music. The introducing track from Multiform Palace is scratchy experimental hip-hop with tinges of South America. We build on that with rooster-sampling cumbia from Romperayo and dark latin rhythms from Manuka Honey, and we touch on Yorkshire dubstep, Korean techno, krautrock from Raime and Valentina Magaletti's Moin project, the latest from the Nurse With Wound list and loads more. Tracklisting Multiform Palace - Tompkins 88 (Specious Arts, USA) NET GALA - Shpiral (SVBKVLT, China) Wilted Woman - Tin Dip Drop (Antibody Label, Belgium) Joe Snow, Danny T & Tradesman - Scallywags & Sound Systems (Uncomfortable Beats, Australia) Moin - Right is Alright, Wrong is to Belong (AD 93, UK) Romperayo - El Gallo impávido (self-release, Colombia) The New Runes - One Meilleure Personne (self-release, USA) Manuka Honey - Pestañas (N.A.A.F.I., Mexico) Miedo Total - Undead Asylum (self-release, UK) Association P.C. - Scorpion (Finders Keepers Records, UK) Produced and edited by Nick McCorriston.

Foetus special with JG Thirlwell in conversation with David Eastaugh Thirlwell was born in Melbourne, Australia. He briefly studied Fine Art at Melbourne State College (now part of the University of Melbourne) before moving to London, England in 1978, where he played with the post-punk band prag VEC and formed the first of his numerous musical projects, Foetus. In the 1980s, under the pseudonyms Clint Ruin and Frank Want, he contributed to various releases by Nurse With Wound, Marc Almond, The The and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He co-wrote "Wings Off Flies" on From Her to Eternity, the first Bad Seeds album. Longtime Nick Cave associate Mick Harvey would later report that Thirlwell's time in the band was cut short, in part, by a clash between Thirlwell's highly structured studio routine as contrasted with Cave's at-the-time habit of "shambling through it" while recording. Thirlwell released his first 7" single, OKFM/Spite Your Face, in 1981, on his own Self-Immolation record label in his first incarnation as Foetus. Over the next few years, he would release two more singles, a 12" EP, and four full-length albums, Deaf, Ache, Hole and Nail (Some Bizzare Records) . After visiting the United States during a live stint with the Immaculate Consumptive (Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave and Marc Almond) Thirlwell settled in New York City, where he is still based. Since his move he has released several singles, fourteen EPs (including Stinkfist, with fellow New York artist Lydia Lunch and Thurston Moore), and seventeen full-length albums. In addition to being a prolific artist in his own right, Thirlwell has remixed and produced numerous pieces for artists including Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Pantera, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The The, Zola Jesus and Swans. He has also done voice-over work for MTV and other entities. Since 2000 Thirlwell has become more active as a composer, having written commissions for Bang on a Can, League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots, and the Kronos Quartet, and scoring cartoons The Venture Bros. for Adult Swim and Archer for FX. He also revived his primary instrumental project, Steroid Maximus, and initiated a more experimental instrumental project in Manorexia. He continues to write and perform regularly as a solo artist and with various ensembles. He is also a member of the freq_out sound art collective, and has created solo sound installations in Kaliningrad, Santarcangelo and Vienna.

England’s Hidden Reverse: A Secret History of the Esoteric Underground was originally published in 2003 and quickly went out of print, an annoying but appropriate reflection of its subject matter. The most comprehensive account to date of first-generation British industrial music, the book has recently been given new life by Strange Attractor Press. To mark the publication of this updated edition, we’ve put together a special episode featuring the music of Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Current 93 and Nurse With Wound. Numerous characters from England’s Hidden Reverse also appear, including David Keenan himself, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Genesis P-Orridge, David Tibet, Jhonn Balance, Peter Christopherson, Steven Stapleton, Thomas Ligotti, Danielle Dax, Clive Barker, Derek Jarman and William S. Burroughs, along with a cast of confused and indignant inquisitors… http://strangeattractor.co.uk/shoppe/englands-hidden-reverse/

Spaceman's Transmissions (Ambient Music Podcast)

My personal challenge with this was to make a mix that I REALLY liked, only take a few hours from start to finish, that did not mess with family time in any way, and didn't cause me to go to bed at a time that only allowed me about 4 hours of sleep before I had to get up for work. Whew! I'm pretty sure that I accomplished that task. I wanted to make a mix that was very dark, but when I started getting the tunes, it made me wonder how anyone could make it through something so heavy and ominous. So I changed my plan to put alternate between the dark and light (thus the title). Nothing says dark ambient music like Steve Roach (had to put in two of his tunes). It was a good chance to use some of his stuff. Maybe should have gone with some Robert Rich, but he was on the last mix. There are always future mixes. I have some more Maenad stuff, and it came down to that or something from Nurse With Wound. Another time, another mix. Enjoy this mix!turn on, tune in, sleep...ambient-transmission.blogspot.comwww.facebook.com/tonepoetmusic
