In this essay, Matt Grimes discusses the continuing significance of anarchism among a group of ageing anarcho-punks, who first engaged with anarchist ideologies and politics in their adolescence in the 1970s and 1980s. Drawing on the relationship between ageing, identity, memory and nostalgia, Matt explores how this group of ageing anarcho-punks have negotiated their anarchist beliefs, alongside the responsibilities often associated with adulthood and ageing. Dr Matt Grimes is Course Director BA (Hons) Music Business and Senior Lecturer in Music Industries and Radio. Matt's most recent publications are; Way, L. and Grimes, M. (2024) (eds) Punk, Ageing and Time. London: Palgrave MacMillan and Grimes, M. (2024) "I'm not someone who calls himself an anarchist, I am an anarchist". In 1997 a smash-hit single called "Tubthumping" took the world by storm. Its authors were an eccentric eight-piece outfit from Leeds, England who kept insisting that they were anarchists. Media and fans alike were confused: what did this feel-good drinking song have to do with politics? And what were a bunch of radicals doing making pop music anyhow? This is the story of Chumbawamba... sort of.You see, to understand Chumbawamba's incongruous success as pop star anarchists, you have to know the backstory. Far from an overnight success, this band's roots stretched back 15 years earlier to a small but immensely important scene called anarcho-punk. This movement, spearheaded by the legendary underground group Crass, merged music and radical politics in a manner that was bolder and more aggressive than anyone had ever seen, so much so that even those in the upper echelons of the State began to get nervous! In this episode we tell the incredible story of Crass and the 80s anarcho-punk movement that, however indirectly, led to one of the catchiest singalong anthems of the 90s. Consider this a Prequel to our proper Chumbawamba series. But unlike the Star Wars prequels, this shit is just as good (if not better) than the real thing...FOLLOW US:Instagram: polishing.podcast Twitter/X: @polishing_turds email: polishingturdspodcast@gmail.com

Differentiating from conventional punk chiefly because of the explicit political messaging contained therein, but also because of some incredible musical experimentation by many of its acts, this flourishing underground scene threw up real gems all but unknown to the mainstream. This eighteen track collection gathers up just a handful of them, with tracks by Poison Girls, Flux Of Pink Indians, The Ex, Chumbawamba (long before ‘Tubthumping'!), scene godfathers Crass, and many more.
Chumbawamba is known for one of the biggest earworms of the late 90s, Tubthumping... "you know, I get knocked down, but I get up again". The sticky sweet, catchy, stadium anthem is known worldwide for all the wrong reasons, but did you know that Chumbawamba is one of the most anarchistic bands in existence? Join us this week as we explore assaults on Prime Ministers, legendary punk bands, and much more as we explore Chumbawamba's career. Find us! Dr. Avery-Natale specializes in race and racism, identity, social movements, and social theory. He is the author of the book, Ethics, Politics, and Anarcho-Punk Identifications: Punk and Anarchy in Philadelphia.
Edward Anthony Avery-Natale's book Ethics, Politics, and Anarcho-Punk Identifications: Punk and Anarchy in Philadelphia (Lexington, 2016) explores the ways in which those who identify as punks and anarchists living in the Philadelphia area construct their identifications narratively through the use of ethics. The book shows that contemporary subcultural and political identifications are complicated by the multiplicity of identifications that postmodern subjects must work from. Throughout the book, it is shown that narrators strive to maintain the coherence of their identifications through narrative reconciliations of contradictions and conflicts. The identity label "anarcho-punk" is of particular salience here, as the hyphenation of the two terms, itself a central component of the book's analysis, forefronts the multiple nature of the identification on the whole. This makes anarcho-punk a particularly interesting identity to study because there we can see clearly the complicated nature of identities in the contemporary age most clearly. Ethics, Politics, and Anarcho-Punk Identifications includes chapters focusing on the entry into subculture, fashion, punk, politics, anarchy, race and racism, gender and sexuality, and more coupled with in-depth theoretical analysis. Dunstan Bruce is perhaps most famous for his lead vocals and listing of libations in the Chumbawamba pop hit, Tubthumping. But there is so much more to him and that band than that one song. For the hour we touch on some of the band's 30 year history, their relation as a collective, anarchist band to social justice movements around the world and how they used their fame and money to give back, Dunstan's recently finished documentary “I Get Knocked Down: The Untold Story of Chumbawamba” and his accompanying one man show “Am I Invisible Yet?”, aging and the battle for relevance, staying involved in politics and more. “I Get Knocked Down” is still seeking distribution so not streamable, but keep an eye on the fakebook page for updates on that, and you can find his prior documentary on Chumbawamba published about 20 years ago on youtube, entitled “Well Done, Now Sod Off!” You can find a rather embarrassing mixtape from us years ago on archive.org, expect a replacement playlist for it soon. While everyone else rushed to get their Albums of the Year published two months ago, we took our time because we're thoughtful (lazy) and wanted to give consideration to all possible contenders (lost track of time). In this episode we talk about our the albums we listened to most in 2019 and play our favorite tracks from said albums. Also, if you're a fan of really shitty audio, you're gonna be super stoked because Anarchopunk forgot to check his recorder settings before recording!

We got to talk to Danbert Nobacon of Chumbawamba about being an Anarcho Punk in England during it’s heyday. He gets into the Miner’s Strike and the Thatcher Era, squatting and using pranks to bring down The Man. He also talks about what it was like to be an Anarchist in a band that reached superstardom and has a lot to say about current politics.
Welcome to 2018, comrades! In case you were wondering, Bob's resolution for this new year is to tighten up his editing time frames so that we're not playing Christmas themed songs in January and Anarchopunk is pretty much perfect, so he has nothing to improve upon, thus no resolutions were established. We're really hoping that your new year's resolution was to listen to more punk news podcasts! If so, you're really gonna dig this one! In this installment, we're featuring a menagerie of international punk bands. We've got French punks, British punks, South African punks, Canadian punks and we even sprinkled in some American punks with an interview from the Los Angeles based grouch punk act, Spanish Love Songs. This episode contains an interview with one of my anarcho-punk brothers from back in the day. We recorded this conversation over 6 years ago yet it remains a compelling primer on the evolution of radical ecological movements and the their dynamics within the punk underground.
In this installment of the new and improved Dying Scene Radio, Anarchopunk heads down to the beach to meet up with Colorado's only Orwellian punk band, People Corrupting People to smoke some weed, talk about their new EP Loan Shark and frolic in the sun! Remember when we had a semi-regular podcast that featured new music from emerging acts, news and stories from around the Scene and band/artist interviews? Yea...those were simpler times... But fret not, faithful readers/listeners, since reboots are all the rage these days, we've returned with a new and improved version of Dying Scene Radio! That's right gang, we've done a complete overhaul! With two, all new hosts, a sweet new streamlined format for more cohesion, and far, far less vitriolic politics (because political talk blows ass), we know you're going to dig DSR 2.0! For our debut episode, we sent one of our hosts, AnarchoPunk to Studio City to meet up with Kevin Besignano and Derik Envy from Los Angeles' premiere punk rock act True Rivals. Not only did he get the skinny on their new EP, but he also recorded an incredible acoustic set with 'em!
