This episode is the final episode of this series, and I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported this podcast. In this episode, I speak to Drag Race legend, Jaremi Carey - but you may know him as the artist formally known as Phi Phi O’Hara. We speak about growing up in an abusive household, becoming a drag queen, the good, the bad and the ugly side of being on Rupaul’s Drag Race, and what he does to look after his mental health.
1 out of 5 members of the LGBTQ community is not registered to vote and this election and Jaremi Carey, creator of Drag Race's Phi Phi O'Hara, ain't having it. As a co-chair of Drag Out the Vote campaign, their initiative is to mobilize drag artists across America to increase voter participation in their communities this November with big name to local city Queens. In addition to Jaremi's Phi Phi O'Hara character, he has stayed in the social media spotlight through his photo projects of 365 Days of Drag as well as his Harry Potter inspired Wizardry series, where he recreated looks from both the male and female characters. Jaremi has one heel in the drag world, and one foot in the cosplay scene. We chatted with him about the campaign, his time on Drag Race, and surviving quarantine with your boo.
We are ready Drag Out the Vote on this week's On the Rocks with Jaremi Carey (Drag Race's Phi Phi O'Hara), Falcon Exclusive Steven Lee (aka MascKara), Kareem McJagger, and Drag for Fans' Anthony John...with host Alexander Rodriguez! By Straw Hut Media
She was introduced to many of us on Season 4 of Rupaul’s Drag Race being the reality “villain” of the season, was promised a redemption arc in All Stars 2 and was once again the reality villain of the season, and has since shown the world that maybe it was just the edit. Her compassion for charity is phenomenal and her beautiful cosplay looks took her into the mainstream media. Her name is Phi Phi O’Hara and she’s about to be EXPOSED: Virtual Edition!
Phi Phi O’Hara (AKA Jaremi Carey) stopped by Craig’s NYC Headquarters this past April to talk skipping reunions, growing up in San Antonio, dealing with an abusive father, living out of your car, scamming fast food joints when you’re flat broke, being beaten to a pulp on your birthday, perfection on the pageant circuit, hooking up when you’re homeless, moving to Chicago, getting arrested, stuff that was cut from “All-Stars 2”, playing the villain, smokin’ weed with Shannen Noodles, collecting toys, death threats, Postmates problems, cos-play conventions, charity work, being married to Michael, living in DUMBO, and more! Nineties Cartoons day is a very dangerous day. This week Kyle and Matthew take a nostalgic trip into the Aaahh!!! real animated world of '90s cartoons with comedians Keith Carey and Anna Valenzuela. They talk Nicktoons, Disney Afternoon, Cartoon Network and much more. They also discuss the delicate kid karma at play when the Northridge Earthquake ruined Kyle's chance to meet the Power Rangers. But Keith has no remorse for Kyle's house being destroyed after Kyle mentions he had the Real Ghostbusters firehouse playset. Also, Kyle and Anna chat about "Denver, the Last Dinosaur" and his lasting presence on Spanish TV. (It's kind of like if Morrissey were a dinosaur that liked to skateboard.) And the group attempts to answer one of life's great questions: How does CatDog poop? Check out Anna and Keith on the 12 Questions and Mean Boys podcasts, respectively! Phi Phi O’Hara, a finalist on season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is releasing a brand new single this month that boldly takes ownership of the title she won on television’s popular drag competition show. In “Bitchy”, the outlandish drag star lets fans know she wears the label proudly. Written and produced by Zach Adam and Heather Holley (who has written several hits for Christina Aguilera), “Bitchy” is a pop/rock anthem that O’Hara describes as if P!nk, Joan Jett and Adam Lambert had a baby. “I really wanted something that was representative of who I am,” she explains. “I have a sweet but edgy side. I needed music that matched. It is also meant to be an inspirational message to fans to never allow negative names to tear you down.” Phi Phi O’Hara’s “Bitchy” will be available Tuesday, April 8th on iTunes, PhiPhiOHara.com and all major music online retailers. 50% of sales collected on www.PhiPhiOHara.com from April 8th through May 18th will be donated to the AIDS Walk of NYC. However, she is releasing the track as Phi Phi O’Hara and appears in full drag in the song’s music video. “I could never forget Phi Phi and the impact she has on who I am as a person and the career I have today. That’s why I felt it was appropriate to release “Bitchy” as my alter ego,” she explains. “I would like to eventually transition into singing and performing as Jaremi.” “Bitchy” by Phi Phi O’Hara is available April 8th on iTunes and all major online retailers.
