"One of the things I love about looking back at 80s television is you get to see some early and amazing young stars and very exciting stunt casting."It's Guest Stars Galore on 80s TV Ladies! We're taking a nostalgic trip back to the iconic 80s sitcom "A Different World." Susan and Sharon debate -- and celebrate -- the amazing roster of guest stars that walked the halls of Hillman College during the six seasons of A Different World. As one of the only black-centered shows of its time, A Different World was in many ways “the only game in town” for a certain generation of black performers, and under show-runner Debbie Allen it became a real showcase for black celebrities who -- even in the 80's and 90's -- didn't have as many opportunities when it came to network television exposure.Legendary performers—such as Lena Horne, Josephine Premice, Patti LaBelle, Diahann Carroll, Robert Guillaume, Gladys Knight—and modern stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Raven Symone, Halle Berry… and Tupac Shakur—found a spotlight. Susan and Sharon get out their red pens and grade books and fight it out, narrowing down who will finally be “Best in Class” -- The Top Ten Guest Stars of A Different World!THE CONVERSATIONTHE TOP TWO: How Patti LaBelle and Diahann Carroll are so hilarious -- and perfectly cast -- as the moms of Dwayne and Whitley: two parents from very “different worlds”.Whoopi Goldberg was the secret weapon that allowed the show to do an “AIDS Episode” (“If I Should Die Before I Wake” S4; EP23). Once she signed on, the network couldn't say no. It became the highest rated episode of the season.Josephine Premice played the art dealer that Whitley works for in S4 -- and is the mother of writer/showrunner Susan Fales-Hill! (She later plays Dwayne and Whitley's landlord in S6!)The beautiful Billy Dee Williams plays a former baseball player (S6; EP23) who decides to finish college -- and ends up in the classroom of his old flame: Leslie Uggams! But is it a true 80s TV Ladies show? Sharon calls out showrunner Debbie Allen. She directed 83 episodes of the show (104 were directed by women) and steered it through most of its run.Jennifer Lewis -- as Dean Dorothy Dandridge Davidson -- hits the heights in the Lena Horne Episode -- “A Rock, A River, A Lena” (S6; E22)Susan calls out Gladys Knight in “Three Girls Three” (S2; EP5) -- a classic 80's stunt casting coup that is everything you want it to be!Can you believe it? Susan also loves a very “guy-centric” episode: “Citizen Wayne” (S2; EP21) -- starring Jesse Jackson. But this isn't on Sharon's list for reasons…Who are the TWO GUEST STARS who get cut from the list? One is a guy… And one is… ALSO A GUY!So -- join Susan and Sharon as they talk Brian's Song, Kris Kross, Tisha Campbell, high-kicks, the “Evolution of Whitley,” Gilbert Gottfried, “checking the gate” -- and showering with Blair Underwear (we mean Under-wood!).AUDIOGRAPHYFind out more about “A Different World College Tour 2024” at adwtour.com.Read about Whoopi Goldberg and the A Different World AIDS episode at Hollywood Reporter.Read an oral history of A Different World in Vanity Fair.Watch A Different World -- streaming on MAX.Find out more about A Different World at the official Facebook page.Check out Tammy at the true-crime podcast: Grits with a Side of Murder.Sign up to nominate 80s TV Ladies for a Podcast Award! “You can be anything you want in this world, darling. But if you become an actress or a nun, I'll kill myself.” -- legendary actress Josephine Premice to her daughter, writer/producer Susan Fales-Hill.Susan and Sharon welcome writer and showrunner Susan Fales-Hill as they continue their look back at the classic 80's comedy series A Different World. Susan shares stories of growing up bi-racial in a show biz legacy family, how comedy comes from pain, and the help (and hinderances) she got from men, women and people of color along the way…THE CONVERSATIONBeing Whitley Gilbert's alter ego: “She said a lot of the things I wanted to say -- but was too polite!"FINDING YOUR VOICE: Susan reflects on learning how to speak up in a writer's room even though she was the youngest, newest writer -- and a woman.GO WEST YOUNG WOMAN: The “Big Move” from The Cosby Show in New York to A Different World in Los Angeles.THE IMPORTANCE OF A NEW POT: Sometimes you have to "re-plant" yourself to grow.HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARISA? The challenge of featuring a white character attending an HBCU.JUST A TIME SLOT SUCCESS? Some people grumbled that ADW only succeeded because it followed the massive hit The Cosby Show. How Debbie Allen insisted the show be topical -- and the surprise when Bill Cosby agreed. The story of how Susan personally got Diahann Carroll to be on the show.Being told by her agents after running a Top Ten show: “We can't get you on a white show.”On the joy of casting your own mom -- singer, dancer, actress Josephine Premice.Susan reflects on which “issue” episodes worked -- and which ones maybe missed the mark (looking at you, Los Angeles Uprising…)The network was adamantly opposed to the “Los Angeles Uprising” episodes -- and some believe it signed the shows death warrant. So, join Susan, Sharon -- and Susan -- as they talk pig noses, possible spin-offs, Billy Dee Williams, The Amistad, “Benevolent Karens”, Jennifer Lewis… and the danger of saying “shut up” to your mom!AUDIOGRAPHYWatch A Different World -- streaming on MAX.Watch the classic 2-part Thanksgiving Episode “Faith, Hope & Charity” (S6; EP 9 & 10) -- with Diahann Carroll AND Patti LaBelle! on HBO Max.Get Susan Fales-Hill's books and find out about all her projects at SusanFales-Hill.com.Watch Susan Fales-Hill “In Praise of Complexity” at the Met Museum "Met Speaks".CONNECTVisit 80sTVLadies.com for transcripts and more.Sign up for the 80s TV Ladies mailing list.Check out Instagram/80sTVLadies.Support our show and get ad-free episodes on PATREON.Find more cool podcasts at our host sight, Weirding Way Media.

Blast from the Past was 75th highest-grossing movie of 1999, opening at #4 at the box office on Valentine's Day weekend and going on to take in $40 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. The first of two 1999 collaborations between director Hugh Wilson and star Brendan Fraser, Blast from the Past included a stellar supporting cast, including Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, Sissy Spacek, Dave Foley, Nathan Fillion, Joey Slotnick, and the legendary Jennifer Lewis. Critics were pretty even split on it - partly because it was inevitably compared to 1998's Pleasantville - and none were especially effusive in their praise, but it went on to find a charmed audience on home video and has emerged as the quintessential "hidden gem" in the years since. One if its fans is actor Samm Levine, who graced the small screen in 1999 in the beloved (and prematurely canceled) television series Freaks and Geeks. He joined John and Jenn to talk Walken, swing dance, and his most famous creation, the beloved character Zoot Suit Ryan.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (04/08/2024): 3:05pm- Lindsay Wise of The Wall Street Journal reports that “House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) has pledged to bring up Ukraine aid for a vote in the House soon after Congress returns from Easter recess in coming days. But what the bill will look like—and who will support it—remains unsettled…The Senate passed a $95 billion package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan in February with bipartisan support. Johnson has resisted calls from defense hawks of both parties to simply bring the Senate bill up for a vote in the House, saying his chamber will move forward with its own bill that would add ‘some important innovations' not included in the Senate version.” You can read the full report here: https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/mike-johnson-us-ukraine-aid-package-a3bac384?mod=hp_lead_pos2 3:10pm- Rich offers live play-by-play of the solar eclipse—however, he can't see anything from the studio. Henry leaves to try to get a better angle but still can't see anything thanks to clouds—so, the play-by-play is not going well. Matt refuses to look at the sky because he doesn't trust the quality of the glasses Henry acquired via Amazon. 3:30pm- According to Dr. Sabine Stanely—a professor of planetary sciences at Johns Hopkins University—the moon is slowly moving away from Earth. Consequently, we only have 600 million more years of solar eclipses ahead of us. So, enjoy it while you can! You can read the full article here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/04/05/eclipse-sun-moon-earth-science/ 4:05pm- Michael D. Shear of The New York Times writes that on Monday, while speaking from Madison, Wisconsin, President Joe Biden “announced a large-scale effort to help pay off federal student loans for tens of millions of American borrowers, seeking an election-year boost by returning to a 2020 campaign promise that was blocked by the Supreme Court last year. Mr. Biden's new plan would reduce the amount that 25 million borrowers still owe on their undergraduate and graduate loans. It would wipe away the entire amount for more than four million Americans. Altogether, White House officials said, 10 million borrowers would see debt relief of $5,000 or more.” You can read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/08/us/politics/biden-student-loans-debt-relief.html 4:20pm- While appearing on CNN, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) defended the Biden Administration's plan to eliminate $5,000 of student loan debt for an estimated 10 million borrowers despite the Supreme Court having previously ruled that the executive branch is constitutionally incapable of forgiving loan debt unilaterally. 4:35pm- Are jeans causing climate change? Researchers at Guangdong University have concluded that jeans are as environmentally unfriendly as driving a gas-powered vehicle 6 miles. 4:40pm- Zach Kessel of National Review reports: “Rutgers University president Jonathan Holloway held a town hall with students Thursday night aimed at offering the school community the opportunity to ask him questions. Before he was able to answer a single one, anti-Israel protesters unleashed chaos. As Holloway attempted to address the crowd, ‘pro-Palestinian students interrupted the town hall and prevented the scheduled programming from happening. They shouted and tried to intimidate other students,' Rutgers student Sarah Shiner, who was in attendance Thursday night.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/rutgers-police-escort-jewish-students-out-of-town-hall-after-pro-palestinian-protesters-call-for-intifada/ 5:05pm- In a video posted to his Truth Social account, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said abortion policy should not be crafted at the federal level—and instead, should be left to individual states to decide. 5:30pm- Did you watch the solar eclipse? Plus, what topic is Matt writing his 25-page term paper on? Rich falls asleep during the explanation. 5:35pm- During an interview with The New York Post, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) said squatters have no rights: “How can you even pretend that this is anything other than you're just breaking the law?” You can read more here: https://www.dailywire.com/news/fetterman-blasts-squatters-trying-to-steal-peoples-homes-squatters-have-no-rights 5:40pm- AUDIO OF THE DAY: Actress, singer, dancer, and author Jennifer Lewis has hilarious anti-Trump meltdown while appearing on Sirius XM. 6:05pm- Michael D. New York-based writer Ashley Reese joins us for our a very special Christmas installment of Denzember as we discuss Penny Marshall's 1996 romantic comedy 'The Preachers Wife'. We discuss the film as a metatextual exploration of Denzel Washington's celebrity image as well as part of Whitney's second leg as an international superstar and actress. We also discuss the film's monumental soundtrack, sung by Whitney herself, an album that remains the best selling gospel record of all time. Finally we discuss the flattening effect of family films of the era (especially those produced by Touchstone/Disney) and how they tend to flirt with societal issues while reaffirming the system that causes them. The Mandalorian finds a vent into the sewers, where he hopes to find his people's hidden stronghold. Moff Gideon gives them until nightfall to surrender, or he will order his troops to fire, before saying Din Djarin, the Mandalorian's real name. MARC The Mandalorian recognizes Gideon, who had been an officer of the Empire's secret police when the Empire took over Mandalore. IG-11 arrives on a Scout Trooper's bike with the Child, blasting through the stormtroopers. The Mandalorian takes down several more, but is badly wounded by Gideon. As the group take cover inside, Gideon orders a Flametrooper to incinerate them, but the Child uses the Force to reflect the flames and kill the trooper. MIKEY The Mandalorian and IG-11 remain behind while Dune and Karga take the Child into the sewers. Pointing out that a Mandalorian's face being seen is technically not a violation of the Mandalorian creed, as he is a droid and not a living thing, IG-11 removes the Mandalorian's helmet, revealing the latter's face for the first time. After treating his injuries they then rejoin the others in the sewers. MARC Arriving at the Mandalorian enclave, they find it abandoned except for the Armorer, who explains that the Imperials found the enclave when the Mandalorians revealed themselves. Upon seeing the Child, the Armorer is reminded of the Jedi, whom Mandalorians see as their ancient enemies. She instructs the Mandalorian to take the Child to the Jedi, wherever they might be; she also carves a Mudhorn signet into his pauldron and gives him a jetpack. MIKEY While the Armorer remains behind, the Mandalorian, Dune, Karga, IG-11, and the Child escape down an underground lava river. IG-11 decides to sacrifice himself by walking into an ambush and activating his self-destruct. After they emerge from the tunnel, Gideon attacks in the TIE fighter in which he arrived. Using his jetpack, the Mandalorian plants explosives on Gideon's fighter, which brings down the craft. MARC With the Imperials seemingly dealt with, Karga invites the Mandalorian to return to the Guild, but he refuses as he must take care of the Child. Dune elects to remain behind to work as Karga's enforcer. The Mandalorian buries Kuiil's body beneath a cairn of stones and departs Nevarro. Meanwhile, Gideon cuts himself out of the crashed fighter with the Darksaber. THANK YOU PATRONS Mikey: Marc and I make our living as full-time musicians. Jennifer Lewis grew up in West Loveland in an entrepreneurial family and started her career with Mr. Neat's Formal Wear when she was 15 years old. She excelled in sales and relationship building, and became a store manager and part of the leadership team at the age of 19! She took classes at UNC and quickly shifted from a medical track to a business track in her education - and stayed on with Mr. Neat's as they grew to a total of 19 locations before selling to a larger enterprise! - that she soon departed.Jennifer journeyed through a high-impact career in the years to follow, with breaks for lifestyle and marriage and children, and after some time away from the industry she joined another fast-growing formal wear company with her previous boss and mentor. She ascended to the VP of Sales role as the company continued to grow through a season of industry decline. A later career stop was leading sales for a consulting and training company that was utilizing the Entrepreneurial Operating System - and she quickly fell in love with the framework! Now 20 months into her own entrepreneurial journey, Jennifer has been helping companies as an EOS Implementer, driven by a heart for people and strong experience leading sales and building relationships. I'm certain you'll love her story and heart, and be blessed by the many business insights she shares in this episode, so please enjoy, as I did, my conversation with Jennifer Lewis. PLOT SYNOPSIS & DISCUSSION (Ripped straight from Wikipedia) MIKEY The Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory follow a distress call with the identification of the Time Lord the Corsair to an asteroid outside the universe. After landing in a junkyard, the TARDIS shuts down and its matrix disappears. The asteroid, called House, removes the matrix, and places it in the body of a woman called Idris. MARC The Doctor discovers the Corsair and hundreds of other Time Lords on the asteroid were murdered by House and that two inhabitants of the asteroid, Uncle and Auntie, are constructed from the body parts of Time Lords. Upon learning that the Doctor is the last Time Lord and that no more will ever arrive, House transfers its consciousness into the TARDIS to escape from the rift. Amy and Rory are trapped inside as the House-controlled TARDIS dematerializes. Uncle and Auntie are allowed to die. MIKEY The Doctor learns that Idris contains the personality of the TARDIS's matrix and that they can talk to each other for the first time. With minutes before her body fails, Idris reveals that House had stranded many TARDISes before, and that its pocket universe is hours away from collapsing. The Doctor and Idris work together to construct a makeshift TARDIS from scraps, and then pursue House. MARC Aboard the Doctor's TARDIS, House threatens to kill Amy and Rory. He plays with their senses as they try to flee through the corridors, and then sends an Ood called Nephew after them. Idris makes a psychic connection with Rory to give him directions to a secondary control room, where he and Amy are able to lower the TARDIS shields. This allows the Doctor to land the makeshift TARDIS in the secondary control room, which atomises Nephew. MIKEY House deletes the secondary control room as he prepares to break through the rift to the main universe, which the Doctor anticipates. The TARDIS's safety protocols transfer them to the main control room, where the dying Idris releases the TARDIS's matrix back to the TARDIS, destroying House. MARC A remnant of the TARDIS's matrix, in Idris' body, states that she will not be able to speak to the Doctor again but will be there for him. Idris's body then disappears as the TARDIS matrix is fully restored. THANK YOU PATRONS Mikey: Marc and I make our living as full-time musicians.
