The Scuttlebutt: Understanding Military Culture
Poet and Navy Spouse Jehanne Dubrow

The Scuttlebutt: Understanding Military Culture

Poet Jehanne Dubrow has written much about life in the military community. Her latest poetry collection Civilians delves into the profound transition from military to civilian life, reflecting her personal journey as a Navy spouse alongside her husband, LCDR Jeremy Schaub. This work serves as the concluding volume in her trilogy exploring the military spouse experience, following Stateside (2010) and Dots & Dashes (2017). We welcome Jehanne and Jeremy to talk about their life together with Daria Sommers.  In Civilians, Dubrow examines the complexities that arise when a service member retires after decades of military service. The collection addresses the challenges both partners face as they navigate the shift from structured military roles to the uncharted territory of civilian life. Dubrow's poems candidly explore questions such as: What becomes of a sailor removed from a world of uniforms and uniformity? How is his language changed? His geography? And what happens to a wife once physical and emotional distances are erased, and she is reunited with her husband, a man made strange and foreign by his contact with war? Drawing inspiration from classical literature, Dubrow intertwines themes from works like Ovid's Metamorphoses, Homer's Odyssey, Euripides's The Trojan Women, and Sophocles's Philoctetes. This intertextuality enriches her exploration of transformation, displacement, and the search for identity post-service. For instance, she reflects on Penelope's role in The Odyssey as a parallel to her own experience, contemplating the challenges of loyalty and autonomy during her husband's deployments. The collection also addresses the emotional landscape of reintegration, highlighting the subtle yet profound shifts in marital dynamics. Dubrow's poetry captures the tension between longing for reunion and the reality of change, as both partners must reconcile their evolved identities within the marriage. Her work offers readers a candid look at the experience of watching a loved one adjust to home life after a career of military service, blending formal and free verse with materials ranging from the historical to the personal. Through Civilians, Dubrow provides a nuanced perspective on the often-overlooked experiences of military spouses, shedding light on the intricate process of redefining relationships and selfhood beyond the military sphere. Her poetry not only personalizes the broader narrative of military families but also invites readers to empathize with the universal themes of change, resilience, and love amidst uncertainty. We're grateful to UPMC for Life for sponsoring this event!

The final volume in Dr. Jehanne Dubrow's groundbreaking trilogy about the experience of being a modern military spouse, Civilians (LSU Press, 2025) examines a significant moment of transformation in a military marriage: the shift from active-duty service to civilian life. After twenty years in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Dubrow's husband came to the end of his tenure as an officer. Civilians addresses what it means when someone who has been trained for war returns from the confining, restrictive space of a naval vessel. Set amid America's seemingly endless conflicts, Dr. Dubrow's poems confront pressing questions about the process of transitioning to a new reality as a noncombatant: What happens to the sailor removed from a world of uniforms and uniformity? How is his language changed? His geography? And what happens to a wife once physical and emotional distances are erased and she is reunited with her husband, a man made strange and foreign by his contact with war? Civilians is a book both shadowed by and in conversation with the classics, including Ovid's Metamorphoses, Homer's Odyssey, Euripides's The Trojan Women, and Sophocles's Philoctetes. Blending formal and free verse, with materials ranging from the historical to the personal, Dr. Dubrow offers readers a candid look at the experience of watching a loved one adjust to homelife after a career of military service. Send us a textSalome (usually spelled without an accent above the “e”) is a Hebrew name, derived from the word “shalom,” meaning “peace.” It's a Biblical name given to a disciple, as well as a princess, in the New Testament. With this context, the parents of Dr. Joy Adams considered naming their daughter Salome. However, her dad was afraid of other kids calling her “salami” instead. Ultimately, they changed her name from “peace” to “joy,” but the woman who would grow up with the latter name would keep the former in her mind and heart. The grown Adams attended graduate school at the University of Miami, writing songs at the same time as another student, Ariele Grace Macadangdang. In 2015, Macadangdang needed someone to join her for a set in a local cafe. She thought of Adams, as they both played in the classical string quartet The Wild. They came up with a name in their first rehearsal – Adams joked that she was Salome and Macadangdang that she was a songbird. Thus, the name Salomé Songbird (always spelled with the accent) stuck.Ultimately, Adams moved to Colorado, encouraging Macadangdang to follow, as well as Bryan Dubrow, fellow University of Miami student as well as both Macadangdang's musical partner (they started writing and performing together as American Darling Valve in late 2016) and her life partner (the two married in January 2021). For years, the three kept in touch and occasionally tried writing and performing long-distance with little to no success. However, eventually, Dubrow and Macadangdang followed Adams's requests and moved to Colorado together, and during the summer of 2022, the three found themselves stuck in quarantine at Adams's house for over a week. After playing songs together on her porch, they all decided to revive Salomé Songbird as a trio, with Adams providing cello, banjo, mandolin, and vocals, Macadangdang providing violin and vocals, and Dubrow providing guitar. Fernanda Rocha steps Behind The Rope. You know, official RHOC “Friend Of”, that is. Fernanda chats about her time on RHOC, cast mates Vicki and Tamra and some of our other fav, and not so fav, Orange Holders - Heather Dubrow, Kelly Dodd and Shannon Beador.  Of course, she also dated former The Real Housewives of Orange County star Braunwyn Windham-Burke which, at the time, went viral. Fernanda chats about meeting Braunwyn, how their relationship went from friendship to dating, the timeline of that relationship in regards to Fernanda's divorce from her ex-wife, the public scrutiny their relationship received and more. With this stellar season 18 of RHOC underway, we figured today the perfect day to share this blast from the past chat with the one and only Fernanda Rocha.  @fernandarochafitness @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope  BROUGHT TO YOU BY: HERS- forhers.com/velvet (For Your Personalized Weight Loss Treatment Options)  BYHEART - ByHeart.com/Podcast (Use Code VELVET To Redeem Your Welcome Offer On Their Clinically Proven Easy-to-digest Infant Formula) HAPPY MAMMOTH - happymammoth.com (Get 15% Off With Code Velvet the Best Products For Menopause or Perimenopause) FIJI WATER - fijiwater.com (Pick Up The #1 Premium Imported Bottled Water Brand In The US At a Store Near You or Order Online) INDEED - indeed.com/velvet (Seventy Five Dollar $75 Sponsored Job Credit To Get Your Jobs More Visibility)  TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CAFE (Visit One of Tropical Smoothie Cafe's 1400+ Locations or Order Online or Through Their App Their Summer Mocktail Smoothies) ADVERTISING INQUIRIES - Please contact David@advertising-execs.com MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. A rundown of two RHOC episodes that focus on Katie's desire to expose what she believes is a lie from Heather about setting up paparazzi pictures, with a text from L.A.'s Pap Czar as proof. Gina stresses over Katie talking about Heather because nothing says true friendship like fear of repercussions. Tamra and Emily can't resist getting all up in the mess as Tamra also manages to maintain solid footing atop a very high horse about her ex-amiga Shannon, piling on Alexis' relentless pursuit of camera time, justice for her two-bit boyfriend, and the $75k he allegedly gave to Shannon during their relationship. Gina and Emily maintain their critiques of Jen living well despite financial ruin and the Dubrow's shameless name dropping continues to serve as a solid replacement for ipecac, handy in an emergency but unwelcome in daily life. (Ep 5 begins at the 25m25s mark)BONUS: Tailoring "A Little Bit Alexis" from Schitt's Creek for the exit song. Wanna support this independent pod? In the middle decades of the twentieth century in New York City, Dubrow's cafeterias in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn and the garment district of Manhattan were places to get out of your apartment, have coffee with friends, or enjoy a hearty but affordable meal. They were grounded in the world of Jewish immigrants and their children, and they thrived in years when Flatbush and the Garment District each had a distinctly Jewish character. The cafeterias were also places where working class and modestly middle class New Yorkers of European ancestry, with few great luxuries in their lives, could enjoy a taste of culinary abundance. Under demographic changes, economic decay and high crime in the 1970s and 1980s, the world that produced Dubrow's came apart. The Brooklyn branch of Dubrow's closed in 1978, the Manhattan branch in 1985. But before Dubrow's cafeterias were shuttered, Marcia Bricker Halperin captured their mood and their patrons in black and white photographs. These pictures, along with essays by the playwright Donald Margulies and the historian Deborah Dash Moore, constitute Marcia's book Kibitz and Nosh: When We All Met at Dubrow's Cafeteria, published by Cornell University Press (2023) and winner of a National Jewish Book Council prize for Food Writing and Cookbooks. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with poet Jehanne Dubrow (JehanneDubrow.com), author of  “Taste: A Book of Small Bites.” Dubrow, professor of creative writing at the University of North Texas, has also written nine poetry collections and a non-fiction book, called “throughsmoke: an essay in notes,” about how she came to fall in love with the sense of smell.  “Taste and scent work together in particular to tap into the part of the brain where we access memory and emotion,” she says. “It's linked to feeling and to a sense of personal identity.” The book, “Taste,” is divided into five sections, focusing on the five known tastes, sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. Within each of those sections are tiny essays, just like small bites.  “We are so often shaped by the things we've eaten in our lives,” Dubrow said. “We've all had those Proustian experiences where we taste something and Instantly we're taken back to a moment that we've forgotten about up until that time.” Dubrow talks about her love of food and cooking, vivid food memories, and suggestions for exploring taste. She also shares her recipe for the Matzah Bromelette, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. For more from Taste Buds, follow @TheDEBMethod on social media.

Scholarly discussions on Islam in print have focused predominantly on the role of Urdu in the development of North Indian Muslim publics (Dubrow, 2018; Robb, 2020), ʿulama and Islamic jurisprudence (Tareen, 2020) and relations between Islam and colonial modernity (Robinson, 2008; Osella & Osella, 2008). This special issue of International Journal of Islam in Asia (Sept, 2023) instead offers fine-grained investigations on technology and labour; print landscapes, networks and actors; subaltern languages; and popular Islam. We critique the idea of an “epistemic rupture” brought about by colonial modernity, providing a more systematic analysis of continuities and changes in Islamic knowledge economy. Examining two centuries of print authored by South Asian Muslims, the articles in the issue provide new ways of thinking about questions of knowledge production, distribution, circulation and reception. The issue broadens the scope of earlier scholarship, examining genres such as cosmology, divination, devotional poems, salacious songs, romances and tales of war in Urdu, Persian, Arabic, dobhāṣī do Bangla, Arabic Malayalam, Sindhi, Balochi and Brahui. The articles show the different ways that pre-colonial practices and cultures of writing and reading persisted in the print landscape, in terms of copying, adaptation, translation and circulation of texts. They inquire into new technologies, labour and networks that evolved, and how it provided fertile ground for both new and traditional forms of religious activities and authorities. The articles present new Muslim publics, geographies, and imaginaries forged through the vernacularisation of Islam, and their relationship to the transnational or global community. Nur Sobers-Khan is a researcher and curator of Islamic manuscripts, art and archival collections. She served as director of the Aga Khan Documentation Center, a research centre and archive for the study of visual culture, architecture and urbanism in Muslim societies (2021-22). Ahmed Yaqoub AlMaazmi is a Ph.D. candidate at Princeton University. His research focuses on the intersection of law, the occult sciences, and the environment across the Western Indian Ocean.
