This week on Toon'd In!, Jim Cummings welcomes the wildly talented and wonderfully eccentric Marty Grabstein! Best known as the unforgettable voice behind Courage the Cowardly Dog, Marty brings his signature blend of comedic chaos and heartfelt vulnerability to a conversation that's as unpredictable as it is endearing. From his roots in live-action and sketch comedy to discovering the beautifully bizarre world of Courage, Marty shares how a neurotic pink dog with a scream for the ages became an enduring icon of late-night cartoons and childhood nostalgia. He and Jim get into the weeds of what it takes to make fear funny, how silence can speak louder than words in animation, and why sometimes the weirdest roles end up being the most rewarding.

Send us a textIn episode 104, we dive into the 2021 horror film Black as Night. This not-so-unique blend of supernatural horror and social commentary takes us deep into the heart of New Orleans, where a young girl must confront a terrifying vampire threat that lurks in the shadows. We'll discuss the film's themes of colorism, gentrification, and the coming-of-age throughline that has a hard time hitting the mark. Grab your garlic and stake, and tune in for a deep dive into a film that will leave you questioning what's lurking in the dark.Timestamps Negronomicon: 04:56Crit: 29:17Pause here to avoid plot spoilers!: 34:16 Podcaster's note:A video that Mami Wata Mayowa posted online gave me the language I was looking for when we recorded this episode. The trope with colorism is that dark-skinned women are jealous of light-skinned women. This underlying belief colored the conversation this film was trying to have into a weird coming-of-age story that didn't sit right with me. I have a hard time understanding the perspective of the film has and I think there were a lot of other elements in the story that made this theme seem shallow at best. xo, LaurenGems from E104Black as Night (2021)Cheers (1982, television series)The Twilight Zone (1959, television series)The Faculty (1998)Scream 7 (upcoming)Companion (2025)The Blackening (2023)Barbarian (2022)22 Jump Street (2014)Idle Hands (1999)The Devil Wear Prada 2 (upcoming)Moana 2 (2024)Moana (2016)Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)Jason X (2021)Wolf Man (2025)Van Helsing (2004)28 Years Later (2025)The Last of Us (2023, television series)Fear Street trilogy (2021)Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)Goosebumps (2023, television series)Goosebumps: The Vanishing (2025, television series)Goosebumps (1995, television series)The Nightmare Room (2001, television series)The Haunting Hour (2010, television series)Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001, television series)Squid Game (2021, television series)Virgin River (2019, television series)Locke & Key (2020 television series)Sinners (2025)Mickey 17 (2025)Black Panther (2018)Spongebob Squarepants (1997, animated television series)Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999, animated television series)The Monkey (2025)Longlegs (2024)Until Dawn (2025)Until Dawn (2015, video game)Black Christmas (2019)Black Christmas (1976)Happy Death Day (2016)Cabin in the Woods (2012)Annabelle: Creation (2017)Lights Out (2016)Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023)Groundhog Day (1993)Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)Chlorine Sky (Mahogany L. Sean welcomes back massive friend of the show Luke, from The Howdy Beans Podcast! to discuss the first Wallace and Gromit film. What follows is a celebration of English television. With the shops shut on a Bank Holiday, A Grand Day Out (1989) sees an inventor Wallace and his pet dog Gromit travel to the moon in their home-made rocket ship, in order to replenish their cheese supplies. Because you can't have dry crackers can you?Discussion Points:-In the preamble, Sean and Luke still don't see eye to eye on Signs (2002), Bruce Willis's later film roles, and Gladiator II.-The genesis of Wallace and Gromit and the labour of love from Nick Park to get this film made. -"Let's bow to the inevitable"-Sean and Luke try to avoid tangents.-The size of Wallace's "door-stop" cheese slices.-Aardman films over the years.-The cooker on the moon and his dreams of skiing on Earth. -The death of Boomerang, CITV and Cartoon Network.-Luke is still disgusted with Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023).-Luke and Sean discuss subsequent Wallace and Gromit films The Wrong Trousers (1993), A Close Shave (1995), The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), A Matter of Loaf and Death (2008), and Vengeance Most Fowl (2024).Raised Questions:-How many aliases does Luke actually have?-Where's Sarah?-Do you need to describe Wallace and Gromit for the Americans?-Is it ridiculous to call this Wallace and Gromit, the one with the most unrealistic?-How did this film save an entire cheese?-Do you remember surround sound speakers around the room?-Is 'reverse-recency bias' a thing?-Is Moon Cheese just a different variety?Time stamps:0:09 Introduction and Sighs2:09 Signs Discussion5:28 A Grand Day Out Overview10:25 Nick Park and Aardman12:05 Wallace and Gromit Characters16:57 Animation Techniques23:03 Peter Sallis and Voice Acting28:08 Personal Memories of A Grand Day Out30:32 Favorite Wallace and Gromit Films37:49 Nostalgia and British Culture55:14 Ending Reflections1:01:04 Film Length and Experience1:02:53 Aardman's Future and Challenges1:08:15 Podcast Promotion and Closing RemarksNamed TV Shows:-Creature Comforts (1989-Present).-Brum (1991-2002).-Mr Bean (1990-1995).-Open All Hours (1976-1985).-Still Open All Hours (2013-2019)-Come Outside (1993-1997).-Mr Benn (1971-1972).-Pingu (1990-2006).-The Clangers (1969-Present).-Fireman Sam (1987-Present).-Joshua Jones (1992).-William's Wish Wellingtons (1994-1996).-The Queen's Nose (1995-2003).-The Demon Headmaster (1996-1998, 2019).-My Parents Are Aliens (1999-2006).-Jungle Run (1999-2006).-50/50 (1997-2005).-Get Your Own Back (1991-2004).-Cow and Chicken (1995-1999). -The Cramp Twins (2001-2004).-Ed, Edd and Eddy (1999-2006).-Dexter's Lab (1996-1998, 2001-2003).-Recess (1997-2001).-The Powerpuff Girls (1998-2005)-Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999-2002).-Hole in the Wall Game Show (2008-2009).-Shaun the Sheep (2007-Present).Thanks for Listening!Find us here: X: @YourselfReviewInstagram: reviewityourselfpodcast2021YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ReviewItYourself Hosted on Acast. Melisa is buzzing about her new obsession: Everyday Dose Mushroom Coffee paired with Olly's Focus Gummies. The duo is also very excited about their new merch drop! Meanwhile, Meghan had a close call with her phone (almost boiled it!) and Melisa's been hitting the gym hard thanks to a friend's incredible home gym. Meghan dives into her lates Christmas movie watch, “Carry On,” and discuss why Melisa's dad should check it out (even though he's currently on a Gunsmoke kick). From there, they take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminiscing about classic cartoons like Rugrats, Hey Arnold, The Wild Thornberrys, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and The Proud Family. But the fun doesn't stop there! They discuss the recent arrest of a certain influencer and the surprising news about Ozempic's potential use in treating addiction. And finally, they revisit Meghan's 2024 predictions and see how accurate (or not) they were. In this episode of The Wrap Beers, 90s nostalgia takes center stage. Beers are nice, but the guys chose drinking responsibly with their drink selection, settling for their go-to brand that, quite frankly, boasts "Murder Your Thirst" as their mission statement. That's right. Liquid Death is back! While murdering their thirst with new flavors, Dylan and Rog dive into their favorite 90s cartoons. 'Hey Arnold!', 'Ed, Ed, and Eddy', and 'Courage the Cowardly Dog' are just a few of the many classics mentioned in the first half. One movie star yet to be discussed is the great Vince Vaughn, who gets his flowers in the second half. To wrap things up, the guys relive their high intensity shenanigans from the past couple weeks, which brought Dylan an unforgettable night at a The 1975 concert, and Rog's first "What the float" experience on Halloween.Sip back and enjoy the show!Drink of ChoiceLiquid Death - Mango Chainsaw (Dylan) / Convicted Melon (Rog)Created by upStreamhttps://www.upstreampix.com/the-wrap-beers-podcastFollow The Wrap Beers Podcast!https://www.instagram.com/thewrapbeers/https://twitter.com/TheWrapBeersDylan - https://www.instagram.com/dylan_john_murphy/Roger - https://www.instagram.com/rogerzworld/
