Meghan dives into her lates Christmas movie watch, “Carry On,” and discuss why Melisa's dad should check it out (even though he's currently on a Gunsmoke kick). From there, they take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminiscing about classic cartoons like Rugrats, Hey Arnold, The Wild Thornberrys, Aaahh!!! They discuss the recent arrest of a certain influencer and the surprising news about Ozempic's potential use in treating addiction. This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with writer, producer, former studio executive and diversity thought leader Kelly Edwards. Many of us want to be able to pitch our shows to a network or studio but just don't know how the game is played. Kelly not only knows how the game is played she wrote a book on how to do it.Her new book is The Executive Chair: A Writer's Guide to TV Series Development. To make compelling television, our industry depends on enthusiastic new voices with fresh ideas. While there are plenty of books about the mechanics of writing, this is the first time an insider has detailed the invaluable TV executive perspective. As key pieces of the entertainment puzzle, executives hold institutional wisdom that seldom gets disseminated outside network walls. The Executive Chair breaks down the business from the gatekeeper's point of view, illuminating the creative process used by those who ultimately make the decisions. Whether developing a project for the entertainment marketplace or merely probing the executive mindset, The Executive Chair dispels myths about the creative process and takes the reader through the development of a pilot script."There are a million ways to break into Hollywood. Your journey will be unique to you. Meet all the people. Work all the angles. But most of all, enjoy the ride." - Kelly EdwardsKelly Edwards recently transitioned from inside the network ranks into a writing and producing deal with HBO under her Edwardian Pictures banner. In her former executive role, she oversaw all of the emerging artists programs for HBO, HBOMax, and Turner. The pilots she produced through the HBOAccess Writing and Directing fellowships have screened at major film festivals including Tribeca and SXSW, and garnered multiple awards.Prior to HBO, Edwards was a key corporate diversity executive at Comcast/NBCUniversal for over five years where she oversaw over 20 divisions, launched employee resource groups, and introduced diverse creative talent to NBC, USA, Syfy, Bravo, and Telemundo.Edwards' career spans both television and film. Early in her career, she worked as a creative executive in features at both Disney and Sony under such talents as Garry Marshall and Laura Ziskin. After moving to television, she served as a senior executive at FOX where she developed LIVING SINGLE, CLUELESS, and THE WILD THORNBERRYS. While heading up UPN's Comedy division as the SVP of Comedy Development she developed GIRLFRIENDS, THE PARKERS, and MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE.In 2000, Edwards co-founded the non-profit organization Colour Entertainment, a networking group for diverse creative executives in TV, Film, Digital, as well as assistants, all designed to connect current and future industry executives with one another.Kelly and I had an amazing conversation about the business, how to pitch a television project to a studio, and much more. Enjoy!

Leslie and I discuss the difference between an author and a writer, how her experience writing TV sit-coms and personal essays was very different than writing a full-length novel, and how the idea for her realistic story came from the challenges she observed her forty-something friends grappling with as children left home, parents aged, and marriages underwent major transformations. Leslie A. Rasmussen was born and raised in Los Angeles and graduated from UCLA. She went on to write television comedies and is a member of The Writers' Guild of America. Hear how to find your voice, even in the midst of change What a powerful conversation I had with Leslie Rasmussen, award-winning author of the novel After Happily Ever After. It is a book that tells a story about a woman, perhaps you or me, who realizes that it is time for her to rethink the woman she used to be and wants to become. Sounds both familiar and intriguing, right? It is. While Leslie will tell you in our podcast all about her own journey, she also will shed light on how this novel emerged and why she has used it to give a voice to many women today facing the pain of change. Whether it is pandemic fatigue or watching the house empty as the kids head off to college, I know this is a conversation you will enjoy and a book you will want to read. Watch and listen to our conversation here An empty nester learning to love herself "one blunder at a time" Inspiration for Leslie's debut novel can be traced back to 2016. As she spent time around other mothers, she decided to write a fictionalized treatment of actual human scenarios from a woman's perspective. From information gleaned in interviews with anonymous women who spoke candidly about their marriages, she connected the dots between their stories and created a protagonist who is the composite of many women, including herself. About Leslie Rasmussen After graduating with a bachelor's in communications from UCLA, Leslie wrote television comedies, becoming a member of the Writers Guild of America West. She wrote for Gerald McRaney, Burt Reynolds, Roseanne Barr, Norm McDonald, Drew Carey and Ralph Macchio, as well as The Wild Thornberrys and Sweet Valley High. She then earned a master's degree in nutrition and ran her own business for ten years. Most recently, her essays have been published in more than 20 online magazines, including Huffington Post. It's an MBSing holiday special as I welcome back Kevin Budnik 100 episodes later to talk about a very specific, festive corner of his original topic, cartoons. We cover a lot of ground (Catdog, As Told By Ginger, The Wild Thornberrys, Fairly Odd Parents, etc.), but we spend the most time dissecting Rugrats Chanukkah and the Christmases of Doug, Hey Arnold, and Rocko. My favorite part is not the nostalgia but how we view these specials as adults and the lasting themes they have for us. Kevin's got some fun insight as to more serious inspiration for certain silly storylines and a podcast of his own to share with listeners about fellow cartoonists and creators.
