Jules Miller knows what it is to be a legal tech entrepreneur. She is a three-time founder, twice of legal tech companies: Hire an Esquire in 2012 and Evolve Law in 2015. Now a partner in venture capital firm Mindset Ventures, she is leading her firm’s expansion into legal tech investing, most recently with the Series A financing of legal marketplace Priori Legal.  On this episode of LawNext, Miller joins host Bob Ambrogi for a conversation about venture investing – in technology generally and in legal technology specifically. She discusses what she looks for in a founder, the types of companies and technologies that excite her, and how a founder can get her ear. She also talks about what VCs can do to increase diversity among founders.  Prior to joining Mindset in June, Miller was an executive at IBM, where she co-founded IBM Blockchain Ventures, launched and ran the IBM Blockchain Accelerator, and led the IBM Blockchain Garage for North America. Law is a Customer Service Business: Nicole chats with Basha Rubin, CEO and Co-Founder of Priori Legal. Technology is changing access to legal services: Priori is working to remove aspects of finding and working with lawyers that impede efficiency. How did you come up with the idea for Priori: We felt a marketplace solution would help businesses: identify high quality lawyers, understand pricing, get a transparent look at what their purchasing; while using technology to make managing the relationship easier. Clients’ value that Priori seriously vets their lawyers: Improving on the legwork businesses typically do themselves; they set mandatory minimum requirements; vetting is done by people who are expert at vetting lawyers; as are reference checks; and face-to-face interviews. Lawyers value the business acquisition channel: Unlike other services – no bidding is involved. Lawyers get ‘pinged’ when a client is looking for services tailored to their experience, background and practice. Priori handles billing, invoicing and collection. People network superficially: Basha suggests small networking groups where you become friends with peers is better than attending 30 cocktail parties in a month. Advice to those starting out: Keep at it – you’ll feel you’re running hard and not making progress then you’ll have of breakthrough – it’s all about tenacity.

Do quarterly 360s:  In a high growth business; look at your own work as if you’re evaluating a team member. Legal tech has influenced significant change: Ethics rules and the rules of professional conduct require that lawyers know how to use technology and show competency. Technology can trim fixed and embedded costs: A savings that can be passed on. Create a scalable market presence: using technology to be high touch while remaining primarily remote. Trial and error:  was necessary to limit and define who to go after and who to turn away.
