Santhera Pharmaceuticals chief medical officer Dr Shabir Hasham talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's progress in launching AGAMREE, a dissociative corticosteroid for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Santhera is a Swiss specialty pharmaceutical company focused on treatments for pediatric rare diseases. Its lead product, AGAMREE, aims to offer comparable efficacy to traditional corticosteroids while reducing the debilitating side effects often associated with long-term steroid use in DMD patients. Hasham noted that current treatments are frequently discontinued or reduced after a few years due to growth stunting, weight gain, and other complications. “Our drug AGAMREE is a corticosteroid, but we've been able to modify the structure of it… we offer the same efficacy… but we are able to avoid many of the debilitating side effects,” said Hasham. The treatment has already launched in Germany, Austria, and the UK, with further European rollouts expected in the coming months. Commercialisation in the US is underway via a partnership with Catalyst Pharmaceuticals, and entry into China has begun through Spirit Genetics. New long-term data from the Guardian study shows patients treated for up to eight years exhibited no growth stunting and significantly fewer fractures. Jack interviews Peter McCluskey - a full time carer and volunteer with EMERGE Australia, a support group for sufferers of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), a complex, long-term illness characterised by severe fatigue that is not relieved by rest, joint pain, multiple food allergies, dizziness, sensitivity to light, touch and sound. Peter's wife, Jen, was first diagnosed with ME/CFS in 1993. Peter outlines the struggles his wife has had to manage over the last three decades. The condition is exacerbated by medical health professionals who often believe ME/CFS is a psychosomatic syndrome. Poor and out-dated advice from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners continues to worsen the symptoms for sufferers of this debilitating illness. The advice remains in place in Australia despite changes to treatment in the UK and the US. Sufferers are often bed bound for much of their lives. They find it extremely difficult to access government support, including disability pensions and the NDIS.

Having Long Covid can be an extremely isolating experience, patients may not look unwell, but they have debilitating symptoms like shortness of breath, muscle pain or extreme fatigue. Sufferers say it's hard to explain what's happening, but now there's another language to help them communicate. It's called "body mapping" and is bringing positive results to Long Covid patients. Oxford University research fellow Maaret Yokela-Pansini teamed up with colleague Professor Beth Greenhough to use body mapping for their project Visualising Long Covid, with the help of charity Long Covid Support.Former professional rower turned Long Covid advocate, Oonagh Cousins, says body mapping allowed her to reflect on how the illness is experienced in different parts of the body. Maaret and Oonagh speak to Mihi.
