Episode 283: "I Will Never Be Hurt Again": How Jesus' Sacred Heart Breaks the Cycle

Being Human

A hardened heart isn't where the story starts. It's what's left after a child trusted, got hurt, and concluded: I'll never be in that position again. This week, Dr. Greg turns the antisocial series toward hope: looking at how that hardness forms, and how the Sacred Heart of Jesus, betrayed and pierced yet still open, breaks the pattern. Key Topics: Why a hardened heart is never cold by nature—it's protection learned the first time trusting backfired Why the urge to control everyone around you is really an old strategy for never being at anyone's mercy again How "making up for it" can quietly become a way to avoid facing the wound underneath Why Jesus didn't heal the hardened heart from a safe distance—He walked straight into betrayal and stayed open What it means that control isn't the enemy; where you aim it is what changes everything Why healing means loving even the parts of you that sin, not just the parts that behave Why you can't will yourself into trust overnight—and why that slowness reflects your dignity, not your failure Learn More: Earlier in this series on the Antisocial Defense Patterns: Antisocial Part 1 — Ep. #281: Control or Be Controlled: The Devastating Wounds Behind Antisocial Behavioral Patterns Antisocial Part 2 — Ep. #282: You're (Probably) Not a Serial Killer—But You May Share Some of Their Antisocial Traits The Litany for Mental Health Dr. Greg references: A Litany for Mental Health The original Sacred Heart revelations: The Autobiography of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Start of the Being Human series on the Histrionic Defense Patterns: Ep. #274: To Be Loved Is to Perform: Inside the Histrionic Compulsion for Attention and Validation Start of the Being Human series on the Borderline Defense Patterns: Ep. #269: BORDERLINE: The Push-Pull Between a Fear of Abandonment and Annihilation Start of the Being Human series on the Dependent Defense Patterns: Ep. #265: Jerry Maguire, Gollum, and the Fear of Not Existing Start of the Being Human series on the Narcissistic Defense Patterns: Ep. #261: Narcissism and the Terror of Being Ordinary Need help? Send us Fan MailGirls let's talk about humility for a second. It's one of the most important virtues that we can have and yet it's the one that we so easily avoid due to discomfort. Praying the Litany of Humility is scary, being prideful is easy, and our culture makes it so effortless to be arrogant in our daily decision making, so how can we stand out as bold Catholic women and go against the grain? That's what Courtney and Meghan discuss this week—the how-to be humble guide on being a truly humble daughter of God and how hard it is to practice this virtue. Mary and the Saints: Shop at www.MaryandtheSaints.com and get 15% off entire order with code DailyNothings15Truly Free: Start using cleaning products that you can feel safe using! The Church calls Saint Joseph the Terror of Demons. A carpenter. A foster father. A man who speaks not a single word in Scripture. And hell is terrified of him. In this episode, John Heinen sits down with Devin Schadt, executive director of the Fathers of Saint Joseph, to unpack the four reasons Satan hates Saint Joseph. These are the virtues that send demons running. The same virtues every Catholic man is called to build. We discuss how being called a just man used to be the highest honor a man could receive, the importance of prompt obedience, confidence, and magnanimity, and silent sacrifice. Saint Joseph gives us the example and pattern to achieve this. Litany of St. Joseph - https://catholicgentleman.com/2026/05/litany-of-st-joseph

Father Anthony with Cristina and Tony regroup today after the weekend.  Father Anthony offers daily prayer with the Litany to the Sacred Heart.  Father refers to the period of the Era of Martyrs more specifically to the end of the period of martyrdom which failed to end Christianity.  He refers to and reads from writings of Pope Damasus I on the martyrdom of Saint Peter.  He talks about references Pope Benedict XVI made to the Great Apostasy and talks about how we are continuing the writing of the story of our church today; the story staying the same but the times change.  He reminds us the need to recognize the need to stay true to the church and focus on serving God in humility calling for metanoia. Father discusses how the moving away from God to focus on the SELF has caused this disorientation both from outside and inside of the church. They discuss the need to remain true to Catholicism despite all the challenges faced with today and keep the Church as a reverent and holy place.   St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish

June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The Sacred Heart symbolizes Jesus' divine and human love for humanity. The prayer's central message is simple: Jesus' heart is a sign of God's unfailing love, and June is a special time to contemplate and respond to that love.'Like the Rosary, the litany is a repetitive prayer, and the repetition of “Havemercy on us” after each line is, in fact, like our regularly repeating heartbeat, verycalming: once we meditate on the references, it gives us insight into the love ofGod for us in Jesus, and it gives us serenity through the heartbeat of its repetitivepattern. In our frazzled world these days, we especially need both that insight andthat serenity.' Cardinal Thomas Collins

Lai Ching-te's tenure as the head of the Democratic Progressive Party authorities of China's Taiwan region has been marked by a series of missteps and failures that have not only strained cross-Strait relations but also undermined the island's development prospects.Contrary to his shameless claim in a speech on Wednesday marking the two-year anniversary of his tenure that he has maintained the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, the DPP authorities have stubbornly adhered to a "Taiwan independence" stance, peddled separatist fallacies and obstructed cross-Strait exchanges. That speech was a response, if not a desperate "don't desert me" plea, to US President Donald Trump's Friday interview, in which the US leader stated, "We're not looking to have somebody say, 'Let's go independent because the United States is backing us'." This remark dealt a heavy blow to Lai.In his speech — yet another litany of lies and deceit — Lai openly groveled to Washington, begging for an opportunity to tell the US leader that he wishes to continue purchasing US weapons, which he misleadingly labeled as essential to peace. Ironically, he tried to assure his audience that the island's future would not be determined by external forces just moments after trying to solicit US support. In an attempt to conceal his secessionist nature, Lai peddled a so-called "Taiwan subject mentality" in his speech, openly seeking to sever the island from the Chinese motherland. This "soft independence" is hidden and pernicious, no less harming than the DPP authorities' overt political separatist sloganeering.Evidently anxious over the US leader's remarks, Lai posted a so-called "five-point speech" on Facebook on Sunday, in which he called black white, barefacedly claiming that his authorities are the protectors of regional peace. Yet to his horror, that "carefully worded" message failed to elicit the hoped for response from Washington — explaining why Lai doubled down on his efforts to appeal to the US not to give up on him.If Lai truly intends to show the world that he is not a secessionist and that he is committed to peace and stability, he should simply pledge his support for the 1992 Consensus and stop fawning over the US.The true color of his secessionist feather is laid bare by the extraordinary lengths he has gone to in an attempt to conceal his separatist nature — and his fear of losing US support for his political agenda. The predicament Taiwan faces today stems from the DPP authorities' long-standing practice of placing ideological manipulation above reality, staking the island's security on the will of the US, and tying the future of Taiwan people to the dangerous path of seeking "Taiwan independence" through reliance on external forces. Once Washington shows even signs of shifting priorities, that layer of illusion surrounding the DPP authorities' reckless approach will be stripped away. In short, "Taiwan independence" is a dead end.Lai's latest remarks do not signal any abandonment of "Taiwan independence", but rather a repackaging of it in more carefully crafted rhetoric."Taiwan independence" is fundamentally incompatible with peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The expansion of separatist forces advocating "Taiwan independence" will ultimately push Taiwan toward a dangerous abyss — a trajectory that runs counter not only to the interests of the Chinese nation, but also to the strategic interests of the US. In this sense, curbing "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait serve the shared interests of both China and the US. Lai's remarks further underscore the reality that "Taiwan independence" has become a common challenge confronting both Beijing and Washington. There is but one China in the world and that Taiwan is part of China. No matter what Lai says or does, he will not stop the historical trend toward reunification, which is unstoppable, as a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on Wednesday.

$20 billion in research. Suicide rates 32% higher than the year 2000. Something is deeply wrong — and it isn't a lack of effort. In this episode, Dr. Greg makes the case that the mental health crisis isn't a funding problem or an awareness problem. It's a standard problem. Without a vision of what a healthy human person actually looks like, the best we can do is manage symptoms. And he introduces something new: a Mental Health Litany and Novena beginning May 15th — nine days of prayer leading into Pentecost, naming the specific fears and lies beneath our patterns and bringing them before Christ. Key Topics: Why decades of funding and awareness haven't moved mental health in the right direction Why the absence of symptoms is not the same thing as health What Catholic anthropology offers that the mental health industry doesn't have Why the Church has been slow to speak into mental suffering — and what that silence has cost How a litany does something that silence and symptom-management can't What it looks like to bring anxiety, depression, and trauma into Catholic prayer — by name Learn More: Download the Mental Health Litany and join the Novena: catholicpsych.com/litany Bad Therapy by Abigail Shrier: The book Dr. Greg references that argues our current mental health treatments may be making the problems worse  Start of the Being Human series on the Histrionic Defense Patterns: Ep. In honor of May, Our Lady's Month, Joe and Gretalyn each bring a favorite Marian poem by G.K. Chesterton to share with the other—without any advance coordination. Gretalyn reads "Images," a meditation on six titles from the Litany of Loreto drawn from Chesterton's 1926 collection Queen of the Seven Swords, while Joe shares "Crooked," a lesser-known 1933 poem from GK's Weekly that captures a more introspective, mature side of his Marian devotion. Together they explore what these poems reveal about Chesterton's lifelong love for Our Lady, the apologetics of Marian devotion, and the paradox at the heart of his faith: that the world only looks right when you learn to see it through her. In This Episode: How Chesterton's "Images" weaves six titles from the Litany of Loreto—Mirror of Justice, Tower of David, House of Gold, Tower of Ivory, Ark of the Covenant, and Seat of Wisdom—into richly layered verse Why 1926, the year Frances Chesterton entered the Church, gives "Images" a deeper biographical resonance What it means when Marian devotion troubles someone, and why Joe and Gretalyn suggest that reaction is worth examining carefully Chesterton's Marian apologetics in Lepanto—and the single line that cuts to the heart of the controversy What "Crooked" reveals about a quieter, more subdued Chesterton in 1933, writing in the shadow of a world beginning to come apart Chapters: 00:00: Introduction & May as Our Lady's Month 02:36: Gretalyn Reads "Images" 07:06: Unpacking the Litany of Loreto 11:03: Chesterton's Lifelong Marian Devotion 14:38: Mary as a Touchpoint for Converts 21:16: Mary in Scripture: Luke and the Magnificat 23:59: Lepanto and the Defense of Mary 27:51: Joe Reads "Crooked" 28:17: Discussion of "Crooked" 33:16: Chesterton's Mature Mariology Resources Mentioned: I Also Had My Hour: An Alternative Autobiography of G.K. Read OnlineWhen they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid. But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” John 6:19–20One of the most consoling things we can hear is our Lord saying to us, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” Every time we encounter His divine presence in our lives, we should hear those words. Though we do not always perceive Him, He is there, and when we reach out to Him in faith, He responds, dispelling the fear that cripples us, replacing it with confidence in His presence. What causes you to fear? Though some forms of fear are good—such as fear of falling off a cliff while hiking on a narrow ledge—other forms of fear that we struggle with every day are not good. Fear of what people think about us, fear of failure, or fear of being mistreated are all fears that stem from our own weakness and lack of surrender to God's grace. In today's Gospel, Jesus' miraculous act of walking on the water, coming toward the disciples in their boat at night during the storm, teaches us a lesson about unhealthy fear.Fear ultimately stems from a lack of humility. It's the fruit of pride, which is rooted in an excessive reliance on oneself rather than on God. Pride seeks control and resists vulnerability, whereas humility acknowledges one's dependence on God and His providence. This misplaced trust in one's own abilities or judgments leads to fear when faced with uncertainties or challenges that exceed personal power. This is beautifully presented in the difficult-to-pray Litany of Humility: “From the fear of being humiliated… despised… suffering rebukes… calumniated… being forgotten… being ridiculed… being wronged… being suspected—deliver me, Jesus!”In today's Gospel, after Jesus had performed the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, He sent His disciples ahead of Him. It was evening when they entered their boat and began rowing across the sea. After they “had rowed about three or four miles” and “it had already grown dark,” a fearful situation arose: “the sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.”Many Church Fathers look at this passage as a literal story that is filled with symbolism, presenting us with deeper spiritual lessons. John frequently uses the images of light and darkness in his Gospel. Darkness symbolizes the absence of Christ, the Light of the World. The Apostles in the boat at night in the darkness, rowing against the wind and waves, symbolize our journey in life. The sea is the world and the boat is the Church, which enables us to traverse the difficulties we face in the world. Though Jesus is not in the boat during the waves and wind, He is not far away. He is attentive to them from a distance but allows them to endure the storm. Each of us encounters storms. Though they sometimes lead to confusion, God permits them to help us overcome fear. Humility is the virtue that especially dispels fear because humility enables us to trust in God, rather than in ourselves. By ourselves, we cannot traverse the seas of the world. Not only will we be tossed about, making progress difficult or impossible, we sometimes lose our way and remain in one storm after another. Reflect today on anything that causes fear or anxiety in your life. What weighs you down and sets you off course toward the freedom and joy God wants to grant you? What is it that is more than you can handle on your own? Whatever it is, humbly admit to yourself and to God that you need Him, because you are incapable of handling it on your own. As you do, listen for His gentle promptings of grace. Hear Him say to you, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” Allow Him to enter your life, calm the waves, and guide you safely to the destination He desires for you. Your humble reliance on our Lord will enable you to traverse any darkness in which you find yourself. My ever-present Lord, at times I rely on myself more than You. This is especially true when I find myself vulnerable and susceptible to temptation. Please humble me, Lord, so that I will see Your presence in my life as the only answer, the only way to overcome every fear and anxiety I experience as I traverse the waves and darkness of this world. Jesus, I trust in You.Image: Christ Walking on the Sea by Amédée VarinSource: Free RSS feed from catholic-daily-reflections.com — Copyright © 2026 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved.
