Episode #137 of Work Comp Talk breaks down the real secrets to winning big money in California Workers' Comp even AFTER you've been fired, and yes, even if you quit, got laid off, or your boss is pushing you out.  In this new segment, hosts Carmen Ramirez and Bilal Kassem uncover one of the most misunderstood rules in CA Work Comp: Post-Termination Defense, the rule that scares injured workers into thinking they lose all benefits the moment they leave their job. According to attorney Bilal, quitting or getting terminated does not automatically take away your rights under this rule, as long as your injury happened before the termination notice or is properly documented. This month, Mary got to have a fascinating exchange with Dr. Dan Papaj, a Full Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with the University of Arizona. Vastly dedicated to pollinators - in particular, the Blue Swallowtail, Dan is an esteemed and longstanding researcher and faculty member. He completed his undergraduate work at Cornell University and earned his PhD in zoology from Duke University. He's a fellow in the Animal Behavior Society and has won fellowships with Bellagio and Fullbright. All along the way, he's retained inspiring relationships with his students. His inflluence now spreads through scholarly and ecological communities.In their conversation, Mary and Dan dipped into the social life of bees, the evolutionary trajectory of humans and the impact of drought on the desert. In the latest edition of the NdB Sunday Show, Chris Steyn speaks to Action Society's Juanita du Preez about policing in South Africa since 1994. She rates the ministers and commissioners from good to terrible over three decades tainted by corruption, boards of inquiry, political purges, faction battles, cover-ups and policing policies that changed with every factional fight. “We can just summarise it as 30 years of cumulative decay. Crime intelligence was gutted by corruption, SAPS was militarised instead of professionalised, stations across South Africa became hollowed out, DNA forensics collapsed repeatedly…Political interference became normal and then they lost the public trust.” Du Preez also comments on the testimony of tenderpreneur Cat Matlala - particularly his allegations of corruption involving former Minister Bheki Cele, as well as the kidnapping of Ad Hoc Committee member MP Vushi Shongwe who was robbed of all his devices. Du Preez relates her court experience of the judge who has been arrested for corruption. And she gives her take on the latest crime statistics that show that 63 South Africans are murdered every day.
