Ben Dimmock, Police Well-Being Lead at Bedfordshire Police, joins the Forensic Focus Podcast to talk about psychological safety, trauma exposure, and the long-term emotional toll of working in policing and digital forensics. Ben shares his own experience of depression 12 years into his service, the stigma that made him hide it, and how opening up eventually led him to build and lead one of the largest full-time police well-being teams in the country. He and host Paul explore why well-being has to be treated as an operational necessity rather than a "pink and fluffy" add-on, and how a culture of stoicism has historically driven burnout, long-term sickness, and unresolved trauma. The conversation digs into cumulative trauma — the gradual erosion that builds job after job until something small flicks the switch — and what genuinely psychologically safe leadership looks like versus performative box-ticking. Ben explains the day-to-day work of his team, from 80–100 welfare interventions a month and TRiM (Trauma Risk Management) assessments to peer support networks, and two services he believes are unique to Bedfordshire: dedicated welfare support for officers under investigation, and support for their families. AGENCY BRIEF: STREET SWEEPER / USAS-12 DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE RECLASSIFICATIONWhat this really was: In 1994, ATF took lawfully owned shotguns and shoved them into the NFA “destructive device” category. No vote in Congress. No new statute. Just an agency ruling that turned specific 12-gauge shotguns into the same legal category as grenades. The targets were the Striker-12, the Street Sweeper, and the USAS-12. The Striker and Street Sweeper used revolving cylinders. The USAS-12 was a semi-auto, magazine-fed shotgun. They all fired ordinary 12-gauge shells, the same kind of ammunition people put through hunting pumps all over the country. The legal hook was buried in the National Firearms Act, specifically 26 U.S.C. § 5845(f). That section says a weapon with a bore over one-half inch can be treated as a destructive device unless the government decides it is “generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes.” A 12-gauge shotgun has a bore of about .73 inches. So every 12-gauge in America avoids the NFA only because ATF treats it as sporting enough. That is the trapdoor. In 1994, during the Clinton administration, ATF issued Rulings 94-1 and 94-2. The agency said these shotguns had no recognized sporting purpose, pointing to their weight, capacity, and military-style features. Once ATF withdrew that exemption, the guns became destructive devices. The pattern was simple: Start with a broad statute and an elastic test like “sporting purposes.” Use subjective factors, including appearance, to pull back prior approval. Reclassify the guns by agency ruling. Open a short amnesty period for tax-free registration. Turn missed paperwork into felony exposure. Confirmed fact: ATF used the sporting purposes clause to reclassify these firearms and require NFA registration without Congress passing a new law. What happens when grief isn't an exception, but a constant presence? In this episode, Jana talks with researcher and educator Nora Gross about her book, Brothers in Grief: The Hidden Toll of Gun Violence on Black Boys and Their Schools, which follows the two years she spent embedded in a Philadelphia boys' high school where students were grieving repeated losses from gun violence. Through interviews, observation, and simply showing up, Nora witnessed how grief shapes friendships, school life, ideas about the future, and the social constraints Black boys face when it comes to grief. Nora also shares how her own experiences of grief - including the death of her mother from cancer while Nora was finishing her Ph.D. program and the deaths of three students in her first year of teaching—influenced the questions she researched and continue to shape her understanding of grief today. We discuss: How cumulative loss changes young people's expectations for the future. Why grief often remains invisible in schools, even when nearly everyone has experienced loss. The unique pressures Black boys face around expressing - and not expressing - emotion. The difference between the "easy hard," the "hard hard," and the "hidden hard" phases of communal grief, particularly in a school setting. Why curiosity, rather than fixing, may be one of the most powerful ways we can support young people who are grieving. How listening deeply can become an act of care. Nora Gross is a sociologist of youth, race, and education and a documentary filmmaker. She is Assistant Professor of Education at Barnard College, Columbia University and received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in Sociology and Education. Nora uses qualitative, multimodal, and participatory methods to understand the ways youth develop and protect their inner lives in the face of external constraints. She has published on issues related to racialized masculinity for both Black and white boys, grief and loss, political polarization in schools, teens' social media use, youth resistance and emotional solidarity, and school supports for vulnerable youth. She has also produced several documentary films focusing on the lives of Black boys and men. Nora is the author of the award-winning ethnographic book, Brothers in Grief: The Hidden Toll of Gun Violence on Black Boys and Their Schools (University of Chicago Press, 2024), as well as co-editor of Care-Based Methodologies: Reimagining Qualitative Research with Youth in US Schools (Bloomsbury Academic, 2022). That section says a weapon with a bore over one-half inch can be treated as a destructive device unless the government decides it is “generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes.” A 12-gauge shotgun has a bore of about .73 inches. So every 12-gauge in America avoids the NFA only because ATF treats it as sporting enough. That is the trapdoor. In 1994, during the Clinton administration, ATF issued Rulings 94-1 and 94-2. The agency said these shotguns had no recognized sporting purpose, pointing to their weight, capacity, and military-style features. Once ATF withdrew that exemption, the guns became destructive devices. The pattern was simple: Start with a broad statute and an elastic test like “sporting purposes.” Use subjective factors, including appearance, to pull back prior approval. Reclassify the guns by agency ruling. Open a short amnesty period for tax-free registration. Turn missed paperwork into felony exposure. Confirmed fact: ATF used the sporting purposes clause to reclassify these firearms and require NFA registration without Congress passing a new law. What is less clear is how many legacy owners actually got notice before the amnesty window closed. But the legal threat was real, and the policy result stuck....
