Christmas isn't always a merry season. We can have disappointment or pain from loss. Maybe its a grieving season. Maybe life doesn't look like what you hoped. And Christmas can accentuate our pain, grief and disappointment. How do we step into our real circumstances and try to enjoy Christmas in the midst of the pain? With that in mind, Alex conducted a Christmas experiment. An experiment on what it would look like to find hope, joy, love and peace during the Christmas season in the midst of her real life circumstances.

Clay wrote a book last year called How To Lead When You're Not In Charge. And let's be honest, so many of us are leading somewhere—in our home, in our work, in our church, in our schools. Each one of us has the ability to leverage influence yet many of us are stuck waiting to be given the authority to lead rather than tapping into the influence that we have. So we talk about the difference between authority and influence, the challenges that keep us from tapping into our influence, how to survive working for someone you don't respect, what to do when you crave more influence, and how understanding our identity is crucial in cultivating influence.

This is a conversation that I fully, completely believe in and plan to have FAR more often. On today's episode with Sarah Bragg, author of A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself, we discuss the importance of not losing yourself within your motherhood, but rather growing INTO yourself. Jesus prunes us as we raise our little ones, mamas. The Wife Project FINAL LAUNCH is on November 7th! Don't miss it! Sign up for the waitlist today! He grows us just as much as we work to raise our little ones up well during our time together. But the question that I want to challenge you with today is: are you willing to be sanctified in your motherhood? Are you willing to fight for your own mental health rather than giving up and giving in? Sarah and I are honest and vulnerable in this conversation as we discuss the struggles that we've had within our own parenting, how it's never too late to change your parenting style and how I'm navigating that in my own life right now, why showing up on the days when you're burnt out is more than enough and how to deal with pressure from family members when they tell you how to raise your own children. This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking to author Sarah Bragg about her new book A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself. Sarah is also the host of the podcast Surviving Sarah. Along with being a master at brewing coffee and a champion of cheering for others, she is also a mother of two girls and a wife to Scott. She and her family reside in Tennessee. Key Points from Our Conversation: There's a lot of pressure that comes along with believing motherhood is your calling. If it is the greatest thing we can ever do, what about the women who don't/can't have children? What happens when your kids grow up? Raising kids is valuable, but it doesn't have to be a pressure point. It's a relationship. Perfectionism tells us that if we follow the formula and it doesn't work, it must be us. You have to get to the heart of who you are and what your kids need. Be aware of your tendency for perfectionism and don't use it as an affirmation of your worth. Pay attention to your "should soundtrack." When you feel like you should do something, let it be an indicator to investigate further. Is that something that's important or you want to do? Why do you feel pressure to do it? Fear isn't a bad thing, but you can't let it drive you. Choose curiosity over judgment. Choose to trust in God. Staying focused on your goals will give you perspective. The best way to communicate with girls about body image is by modeling healthy behaviors and appreciating your body for what it is. Raising girls helped Sarah realize how her self-obsession with looks affected others and gave her perspective on how absurd the goals were that she had set for herself. Stop comparing yourself to other women – including your former self. If we can accept where we are, there's a freedom that follows. Showing up is enough. Let's Get Real Practical: This week we're evaluating our "should soundtrack." What areas of your life do you feel defeated in? When you look at those areas, are you “shoulding” on yourself? Where did those "shoulds" come from? Episode sponsor: Download the 3 Action Steps to Overcome Fear & Pursue your God-Given Dreams FREE training today! Today, I have something special for you! I have one of the chapters from the audio version of my book, A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself. I've learned over the last 13+ years of parenting, that parenting is less about raising kids and more about raising ourselves. Raising kids pushed me to come face to face with my own uncertainties, fears, tendencies towards perfectionism, and inauthenticity. And as I wrestled with those things, certain phrases started to rise to the surface. I began saying these phrases to myself in order to grow up, to become, to be raised. This book highlights over 20 phrases that helped raise me. Instead of being given a list of steps or a specific formula, you will receive a list of phrases that will guide you to becoming your truest self. The more freedom you find for yourself to be yourself, the more accepting and loving you become. And the best gift we can give to our children is a mom who is true to herself, who shows up and is brave enough to do the work. The phrase I'm going to share with you today comes from chapter 22 titled You Can Do Hard Things. I have been hearing such good things from early readers of the book. And I had so much fun recording the audiobook because it felt like what I do with you every single week on the show. I absolutely loved getting to tell you about this as if we were sitting across from each other. We have so many roles we're juggling, schedules to manage, self-care to maintain (not to mention remembering little details - such as what to add to the grocery store list or that school pickup is early on Friday.) The question is: how do we manage presence when it feels like we're pulled in various ways? Joining me today to talk through this topic is author, Sarah Bragg. Sarah wrote about this topic (and more) in her recent book, A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself. Today we'll be discussing how to cultivate presence: how can we challenge ourselves to be more present in the moment without needing to document everything on Instagram/social media? How we can be more present as mothers, wives and friends? And how we can teach our children to cultivate presence in their own lives? ----Show Notes for EP187: Being Present IS WinningEnjoy this Podcast?Post a review and share it!
