Today on MESSmerized I'm hanging out with the amazing Ellie Holcomb, who's fresh off a tour with none other than Lauren Daigle. Ellie gives us the scoop on life on the road—think tight spaces, late-night chats, and the wild sense of community that comes with sharing a bus. She also gives us an insider peek on her friendship with Lauren, how they ended up collaborating on a song, and their favorite moments on tour (spoiler: their song Be Okay will give you all the feels). But it's not all music and fun—Ellie opens up about the tough stuff too, like balancing the chaos of tour life with family time, and how we moms are out here carrying some heavy loads. She shares a heartfelt story about her daughter's medical journey and how she juggled being on tour while caring for her little one. Trust me, this is a conversation you don't want to miss. Ellie's new book Fighting Words (the expanded version of her devotional) and her album All of My Days talk about Ellie's journey of battling anxiety, finding hope, and the power of God's Word to lift us up when life feels impossible. Vulnerability, repentance, grace—it's all here. If you're looking for a reminder that you're not alone in the highs and lows, this episode's for you. I can't wait for you to listen! PS. If you haven't listened to my podcast with Heather MacFadyen of Don't Mom Alone, it's time! The show is called Sidetracked and we talk about family, faith, and basically anything else that comes to our minds in the moment (hence the name Sidetracked). I promise you will laugh! First of all, look at all the amazing guests coming our way this fall on MESSmerized! Seriously, the Lord has been so good to provide opportunities to talk with so many of my personal heroes of our faith and hear their words of encouragement. So, if you're not subscribed to MESSmerized, will you do so today? Also, will you consider sharing your favorite episode(s) with your friends, your small group, and even on social media? What a blessing it would be to have your help getting this show out to more and more people. Today Emily Freeman joins us to discuss her new book, How to Walk Into a Room. She is a New York Times bestselling author of six books with a masters degree in Spiritual Formation and Leadership. She has a true passion for teaching us how to listen well and hold grief and silence with those who need it most. I love how Emily says that silence can teach us a lot about ourselves—it can uncover fears we need to deal with or be aware of. (I'm not very good at silence, so perhaps this was intended just for me.
I know, I know. You've read the title of today's show, and you're thinking there ain't a one of us who really wants to think about how much time we are spending on our various forms of technology. Myself included. True story, recently I was considering ways I could spend more time in prayer, and I literally convinced myself that I had not one spare second in my day. As if the Holy Spirit worked for Apple, at that exact moment a notification popped up on my phone with my average screen time for the week before. And let's just say I apparently have plenty of time to pray based on the time I spend on my phone. Darren Whitehead is the Pastor of Church of the City in Nashville, and his church did a collective digital fast that was incredibly impactful. He's talking about it on today's show, and I love how he suggests a course correction is in order now that we know the impact of excessive technology use. After all, we would do that with anything else in our life. His approach isn't to just throw our phones out the window, but to remove the “distraction” apps and leave only the utility apps. You've got to listen today to fully appreciate this concept, but I know for me personally it sounds like exactly what needs to happen this fall. Listen today, pray about it, and join me in reading and implementing The Digital Fast. Okay, on another note—in case you missed it, Heather MacFadyen and I launched a new show, Sidetracked, many months ago as a part of Don't Mom Alone. Since that time, it's gained in popularity and now has a new home with the Converge podcast network as its own show. Do me a huge favor and go listen to the show here, and subscribe and even leave a review pretty please. This is a huge help as we get this new project launched. And you don't want to miss my Buc-ees story. The Digital Fast by Darren Whitehead All things Cynthia Yanof Sidetracked with Heather MacFadyen and Cynthia Yanof
It's August, and Heather and I are still on our summer quest to surprise each other with cool guests on Sidetracked. Today is no exception as Heather comes in hot, surprising me with the one and the only Jess Connolly. Let's be honest, it's the end of summer and I'm guessing there's some portion of you that's tired physically, spiritually, or emotionally trying to do it all? Jess Connolly addresses just that as we talk about her new book and all the research behind the how, where, and why of rest. Jess's life is full with her being an author, Bible teacher, podcaster, and coach, so she knows the challenges of finding pockets of rest in a full schedule. I love how we discuss that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for resting, and we are all made differently by our Creator with unique ways to recharge. Jess reminds us that Jesus has true rest for us even in busy seasons, leading us to be more awake, alive, and present in our families, ministries, and careers. We end the podcast by getting sidetracked and talk about everything from theology books to ice machines—join us for tons of truth and fun. I mentioned it last month, but as a little reminder, Heather MacFadyen of the Don't Mom Alone podcast and I have a super fun show we do together called Sidetracked. As a part of this little venture, this summer we've decided to surprise each other with a guest and then release the episode on both of our shows. It's been super fun so far, and we'd love to know how you're liking it and if you want more of these shows! On today's Sidetracked episode, Heather surprises me with author, speaker, teacher, podcaster, and enneagram expert . . . Beth McCord. We love Beth because she approaches the enneagram from a biblical perspective and helps us learn how to better navigate our personalities and figure out what makes us tick. I think you'll especially love the real-life example at the beginning of our conversation about Heather firing off a frustrated email to Beth, and how their enneagram knowledge facilitated healthy conflict resolution. We also discuss how the enneagram intersects with our parenting, and the reasons not to “guess” your kids' number and instead have your older kids take the test themselves. (Which I'm so going to have my older kids do sometime this summer!) Can't wait for you to hear today's show! Leave a review and share it with a friend pretty please. Here's a fun little podcast update for you. As most of you (hopefully) know, Heather MacFadyen of the Don't Mom Alone podcast and I have a little sideshow we do once a month called Sidetracked. Basically, it's an unfiltered conversation between the two of us discussing life's goings on, parenting, faith, etc. It comes out the first Friday of the month on Don't Mom Alone, and It's been a big hit. So, spinning off from that concept this week, we're doing a second episode of Sidetracked in the summer months that includes a surprise guest aired on both of our shows. And today is the day we kick it off with our friend Toni Collier. Please hear me: You do not want to miss a second of this conversation. If you don't know Toni, she's the author of Broken Crayons Still Color as well as a podcaster, speaker, and mom of two sweet kiddos. Toni chats with us about everything from getting tattoos with Ann Voskamp to seeing God show up through “God winks.”
Due to an unexpected crisis, Jamie will be delaying her book publicity and tour. She will also be taking a break from social media, public appearances, and recording podcasts until she has had time to process, discern, and recover. The best way you can show Jamie your love and support is to listen to these pre-recorded shows and share with a friend. My friend Heather MacFadyen is back on The Happy Hour today. Heather is the host of the popular parenting podcast Don't Mom Alone, with more than 20 million downloads from around the globe, as well as the author of the book Don't Mom Alone. She finds great joy in connecting other women to mentors and experts through her podcast and in speaking at live events with women across the country. She and her husband and their four sons live in Dallas, Texas. Her newest book, Right Where You Belong, was released last April. On today's show Heather challenges us to identify our God-given space and to fully occupy that space. She encourages us to walk in humility by trusting God with the journey and finding comfort and peace in the fact that we don't know, but we follow and serve an all knowing God! If you're in a post-Christmas coma, you're not alone! Eating cookies for breakfast and watching Hallmark movies instead of entertaining your kids is fine everyone . . . we are doing our best! That being said, can I invite you to join me and two of my favorite people for a few minutes to talk about love? Yes, it's the last week of our Advent series and love is our topic. It's easy to see God's unrelenting love for his people through Jesus' life, from the manger to the cross. But how does this kind of love change us practically in our everyday lives? Heather and Stephanie are lots of fun, and I promise you will be encouraged as we're facing a new year and all of the unknowns. And speaking of a new year, I want to thank every single one of you for being a part of the MESSmerized family, and the calling God has placed on my life. It's been a privilege to walk through parenting, faith issues, spiritual rhythms and so much more the last eight months. I can't wait to see what God is up to in 2024! In today's culture we hear: "Hustle!" or "Slow down!" We are either prodded into endless activity and productivity or told that what we really need is to prioritize rest, relaxation, and simply "being." Is it any wonder we feel torn in every direction, worried we're missing the opportunities God has placed before us while at the same time feeling guilty that we're doing too much? Through her book, Right Where You Belong, Heather MacFadyen encourages us to simply occupy our God-given space--a Hebrew definition of humility. God has given you talents and a sphere of influence. Your role is to fill that space, empowered by the Holy Spirit. In this episode, Heather presents four boundary lines to help you identify your unique God-given space and shows you how to evaluate your next steps with confident peace so that you can stop feeling exhausted and guilty and start feeling fulfilled. Studies show that the average adult makes about 122 decisions a day. Lots of those decisions are small, of course, but not all of them. Some of our decisions can change the trajectory of our lives. So, how do you know if those decisions landed you in the right place in life? Today's guest, author and podcaster Heather MacFadyen, will help you toss aside insecurities, embrace God's sovereignty, and step into the role God has assigned you, right here where you are. She'll teach you how to have confidence in God's assignments and find contentment in occupying the space you're in. SHOW NOTES: 413Podcast.com/274

Parenting is a treacherous journey – don't we all know this to be true! But the beautiful thing is, we don't have to do it alone. We shouldn't do it alone. Today I talk with Heather MacFadyen, the founder of a brand and podcast called Don't Mom Alone, about the idea of community. It can be awkward to seek out and pray specifically for, but we'll be better parents if we find like-minded people to walk through this with. And Heather says that of course, parents matter, but we're not the end-all, be-all, and that's both hard and incredibly freeing to realize. Don't mom – parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle, etc. – alone, okay? Find your people! IT'S FINALLY FALL! The air is crisp (at least for Dallas), the pumpkin lattes are flowing, and the mums are blooming. In honor of the change in seasons, this week we're taking a quick break from our “Trusting God” series to have a few laughs with my dear friend, Heather MacFadyen from Don't Mom Alone. We're laughing/lamenting about everything from Homecoming Mums, teen language we don't understand, and even some of the hard things going on in our lives these days. I especially appreciate Heather's thoughts on the comparison trap and how to identify the struggle and make strides to move forward. And we also hit on sibling rivalry and helping our kids handle conflict well. Last thing . . . if you don't already know, Heather and I have a monthly podcast called “Sidetracked” that releases on Don't Mom Alone podcast the first Friday of every month. Today is a a little peek into that show. If you love it, please subscribe to Don't Mom Alone where Heather and I will be teaming up the first Friday of every month! Happy Fall! If you're anything like me you may have had a negative definition of humility. A definition that may mean punishment, or to make yourself less than. Maybe it was even used against you in response to an action. What if biblical humility doesn't start with doing or being less, but instead starts with fully recognizing and living in your God-given space. What if biblical humility begins with stepping into the life God has for you? My friend Heather MacFadyen is back on The Happy Hour today. This week we're continuing our back-to-school series with some key conversations to have with our kids before school gets rolling again. Over the years I've had the privilege of interviewing many of the top authorities in parenting, and I'm always reminded of the importance of knowing and speaking directly into our kids' core needs. With this in mind, I came up with three topics I want to cover with my kids and also share with you. Spoiler alert: they include belonging, perspective, and kindness. I can't think of more important reminders for our kids at the beginning of a school year considering the inevitable highs and lows that are coming their way. Oh, and a BIG bonus for today's show is that Heather MacFadyen is with us. As always, she gives lots of wisdom while making me laugh all the way through. Job 42:5 is one of my favorite verses in the BIble and I'll end with this: “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.” My prayer this school year is that our kids will not just hear of our faith, but truly experience it with their own eyes. Let's kick-off the year with words that will lead them in the right direction.

Hello from Colorado! We're FINALLY on family vacation, and the high temps are in the 70s and the lows are in the 40s. I basically want to rededicate my life to Jesus, I'm so happy right now. But I'm also excited for today's show because it's a free-flow of my thoughts around the book I'm reading on vacation (Atomic Habits) and the ways our habits shape our spiritual lives. I also share a little insight into the many ways Colorado has not been our friend over the years–yet we're back again. I cannot stress to you enough that you need to follow me on social to see a video I will be posting of an “incident” that occurred last time we were here. As an added bonus, I end today's show with a conversation that Heather MacFadyen and I recently taped for her Don't Mom Alone podcast. We talk about communicating with our kids, carpool disasters, and the value of an “easy yes” in parenting. This is definitely a summer episode that doesn't disappoint. Can't wait for you to listen! Building a rule of life is about the practical culmination of the last 10 months into a vision board for how to take what you're learning, and make it your own. A huge part of the ongoing struggle we face in doing so is comparison and becoming sidetracked by other people's "spaces". Or maybe you're building a family vision and you're not being sidetracked by other people, but you are making a plan that is contained and measured by your limitations, fears, and vows. In doing so, are you ignoring the space and vision that God wants to assign to you in order to grow, heal, broaden, and restore? In Ep. 39, Heather MacFadyen of the Don't Mom Alone Podcast joins Jennifer for the second part of how to build a rule for you and your family. The conversation is so beautiful as both women share experiences from their past, and remember how God has shown up give them not just a vision but one where God remains firmy at the centre. Where do our children belong? How do they know what God's plans for them include? How has God gifted them to contribute in this world? Should they compare themselves to everyone else? These are some of the questions I'm tackling on the podcast this week with my friend Heather MacFadyen, of Don't Mom Alone. Heather walks us through some of the brilliant concepts in her new book, Right Where You Belong, to help us learn how to help our children find their place in the world. You won't want to miss this one! (It might just give you a sense of knowing where you belong, too)! *********** Today's show is brought to you by our newest Prayer Guide, Praying God's Word for Your Child to Find Their Purpose, by Brittany Ann, of Equipping Godly Women. Tackle the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” from a biblical perspective. The way our children answer this common question varies wildly from day to day. From teacher, to fire-fighter, to astronaut, to juggler, we just never know what they'll say. For young children, this question is full of promise and excitement. They can be anything they want! The sky's the limit, and it's fun to dream. But as our children get older, this question takes on new meaning. The excitement of endless possibilities gradually gives way to the pressure of choosing the right college, career, job, or relationship. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” becomes stressful, almost agonizing, as young adults wrestle with major decisions that will undoubtedly affect the rest of their lives. But what if finding their purpose didn't have to be so stressful? What if our children could know with confidence exactly what God wants them to do? In Praying God's Word for Your Child to Find Their Purpose, you'll pray for God to work in your children's hearts to: Draw near to God in sincere faith Be guided by the Holy Spirit Learn how to love sacrificially and with intention Learn to walk in God's strength instead of their own Find rest in God alone Understand God's bigger plan Submit their plans to God's And more! With biblical teaching, scripture-inspired prayers, and space to journal using our Think, Pray, Praise method of daily prayer, this digital prayer guide is perfect for the busy mom who needs God to move in the hearts of her kids. There's some exciting news around here I've been waiting to share! My dear friend Heather MacFadyen and host of the very popular Don't Mom Alone podcast has asked me to be on her show for the next six weeks. We're doing a summer of mentorship series and the first episode is out now. We're covering all kinds of parenting tips as well as “important topics” like the time my son put a cherry bomb exhaust system on his truck and even Heather's texting habit that needs an intervention. Don't miss it this summer. In honor of this fun announcement I've invited Heather to join us on MESSmerized today. We're taking a deeper look at how to know if you're in the space God has for you and how to occupy it well. Heather has a great word for us when it comes to dealing with comparison struggles, hearing God's voice in our lives, and recognizing (and encouraging) our kids' giftings from the earliest age. Right Where You Belong is her new book out on this topic and a must-read. I'm so grateful to each of you who listen each week. I would be grateful if you would share MESSmerized with your people.

I'm so excited that my friend, Heather MacFayden is back on chatologie today! Heather has just released her second book, Right Where You Belong. But the topic of our conversation is best described by the subtitle of the book, How To Identify And Fully Occupy Your God Given Space. Most of us have asked questions like, “Am I where I'm supposed to be? Am I doing what God wants me to do and are there choices for me?” Heather uses the tools she writes about to actually help me work through a decision in my life. Every minute of this conversation will bless you…and I'm glad you're here for it. Remember to share this episode with a friend- it would mean the world to me! In this episode of ‘Get Your Hopes Up,' Christy Wright talks about the importance of acting in obedience when God asks you to do something that doesn't make sense. During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology – the first of three podcasts we recorded live in Israel - we're diving deep – pun intended – into a pair of maritime miracles that took place on The Sea of Galilee, which is also referred to as The Sea of Tiberias, Lake Gennesaret, and Lake Kinneret in biblical narrative. During His earthly ministry Jesus lived, preached, and performed the majority of His miracles near the Sea of Galilee and in its neighboring towns. Mary Magdalene was from Migdal – a fishing village on The Sea of Galilee and three of the disciples were born in the shoreline city of Bethsaida. However, despite its most familiar moniker, the Sea of Galilee is actually a fresh-water lake. It's about 12 miles long, 8 miles across at the widest and it's shaped like a harp. And while its waters are neither salty like an ocean or crystal clear like a mountain stream, Galilee has seen more divine grace per gallon than any other body of water in the world! Our hope is that you feel refreshingly soaked by some as a result of our conversation today. So please grab a cup of coffee and your Bible – unless you're alphabetizing your spice rack, of course – and come hang out on the porch with us! What if I told you that shrinking back when you're called to something big is not a display of humility? It is so ingrained in us, especially as women, to think of ourselves as less-than in an effort to be humble. But what if it's actually pride that makes us play small? This idea of understanding true humility was a big focus for me when I wrote Standing Strong, and I couldn't wait to have a conversation with my friend Heather about it! Heather MacFadyen is the one to talk about this with because she shares such good insight on this very thing in her new book, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify and Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space. And we're not holding back on this one! Join us as we talk about: Four boundary lines that will help you identify the core of the assignments God has for you in this season How to use those boundary lines as a decision-making tool Ways to process rejection in a way that invites God into it The impact of social media on mom guilt and shame, and why we need an inner circle How to listen to God as an important first step in everything you do (and Heather's example of what that process looks like for her!) Each time Heather visits the show she brings truth and wisdom. You can listen to her last visit where where she shares about the dangers of comparison. Her relatable stories remind moms they are never alone in the pursuit of becoming the best mom they can be. Heather MacFadyen is the host of the Don't Mom Alone podcast, a speaker, and the author of two books, including her latest, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify and Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space. Heather lives with her husband and their four sons in Dallas, TX. Favorite quotes: “You don't have to hustle. You can trust that God is outside your space hustling on your behalf.” “Nothing new is under the sun. It is just are we doing it. Are we inviting God into our decisions and are we looking for his invitations for what he is doing?” “God speaks through the Holy Spirit in us and through His word and we can know if it is him if it resonates with the truth of who he has always been and what is written.” “Your current living is what dictates your future moments so how are you spending that time.” “When we experience God it ignites the Spirit in us and we can hear those promptings and invitations.” “If you have never sat and listened to God's voice, what he thinks about you, and what he is inviting you into, that would be a great first step.” Coaching this week: Believing the best about our partners. During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're exploring how hardship and revival are like peanut butter and jelly in biblical narrative – in other words, they're often sandwiched together. And Apostle Paul's life exemplifies the symbiotic relationship between hardship and revival, which he testified to while imprisoned at the end of Acts when he said, “It is for the hope of Israel that I'm wearing this chain.” (Acts 28:20). In other words, Whatever hardship I have to endure pales next to the supernatural hope I'm preaching here, y'all – JESUS is the Messiah we've been longing for since the beginning of time and I'm gonna keep sharing this message until there's no more breath in my lungs! The joy of watching other people's eyes widen and faces light up like Christmas trees when they heard about the unconditional love of Jesus made all the unfair bumps and bruises he experienced while preaching about it worth the cost. In the spiritual milieu, difficult labors lead to miraculous births! Today's conversation is going help some of us take bigger risks for the sake of the Gospel so fasten your seat belts, grab a super-sized cup of coffee and your Bible – unless you're driving or getting spray-tanned for a beach trip, of course – and come hang out on the porch with us! If there were a contest for great names of podcasts and books, Heather MacFadyen of “Don't Mom Alone” just might win. Heather is my dear friend and is joining us today to talk about an incredibly important topic: Occupying your God-given space. She's written an amazing new book on this topic, and we get to hear her heart behind it first-hand today. This conversation is so practical when we're wondering how to figure out where God has assigned us to work for him, and how to get past self-doubt and the dreaded imposter syndrome. (Been there, done that.) I also LOVE her advice on hearing from God and discerning if our plans and dreams are from God or from ourselves. You guys, please go listen—because we can't afford to spend even one more day questioning if we're being faithful in the place God has entrusted us and our families.
