This Sunday, we're talking about money. (We know—fun, right?)But hang with us. We're in week two of our Breathing Room series, and this one might be the most needed of all. Because what if feeling rich has less to do with more, and more to do with margin?
Annie Dillard reminds us, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”Most of us check the clock a hundred times a day… but far fewer of us stop to ask the deeper question: How am I actually spending the time I've been given? This Sunday we're looking at the wisdom of the scriptures and reflecting on what's true about us, our lives, and the time we have.

As photographers — and especially as moms — it's so easy to get caught up in the hustle: saying yes to every session, editing late into the night, and sacrificing weekends with our families just to keep up. I've been there, and honestly? It left me anxious, overwhelmed, and starting to resent the work I once loved. In this episode of Full Hands, Full Heart, I'm sharing the exact shifts I made to create margin in my life and business. From protecting my weekends, to restructuring my shooting schedule, to practical rhythms like meal prep and AI editing, I'll walk you through how I built a business that supports my family and my sanity. If you've been craving more space, more peace, and more sustainability in your photography business, this one's for you.Connect with Full Hands, Full Heart:

According to the National Association of Legal Professions, when I graduated from Law School in 1988 only 2.7% of graduating attorneys made the choice to go solo.Looking at those same numbers, it's easy to track the strength of the economy with the number of new attorneys going solo increasing during economic downturns. But now that so much of the work we do can be done virtually, what used to be one of the largest challenges for any attorney deciding to hang out their own shingle – finding physical office space – has all but been eliminated. As my guest today points out, with the ability to work remotely no longer in question, the stigma of being what was once called “post-office attorney” is fading.Nikita Lamar is an attorney specializing in Family Law, Trademarks, and Probate & Estate Planning. After graduating from Law School in the wake of the Great Recession, Nikita would found The Lamar Legal Group and, as she herself has written, her commitment to preserving what clients have worked tirelessly to build is the cornerstone of her practice. We talk about her unlikely journey to law school, practical and philosophical tips for attorneys thinking of starting their own practice, and how vulnerability and empathy can coexist with zealousness. Enjoy the show!
Katelyn was doing everything—thriving in a demanding career, raising a toddler, volunteering in her community—but feeling the early signs of burnout. In this conversation, she shares the small but powerful mindset shifts and planning tweaks that helped her find time for herself, strengthen her partnership at home, and feel more present with her toddler. If you've ever felt like you “should” be able to do it all but are secretly wondering how much longer you can keep it up, this episode is for you. ==========================
We talked about the decision to stay or to go on Ep69. Ep214 and 217 were both roundtable episodes with people who had separated and divorced. On the flip side, Ep242 and 243 were roundtables featuring people who had decided to stay in their relationships. This episode is a twist on all of those discussions. The Ep302 roundtable tackles the topic of therapeutic temporary separation with the intent of getting back together. In some cases, the time apart helped the relationship, and in other cases, it helped clarify the need to make the separation permanent. For all four of our panelists, the separation helped them make incredible individual progress toward healing. Today, we're diving straight into the heart of what it means to hit that breaking point and reclaim our sanity amid the chaos of everyday life. It's all about taking a hot second to reflect and ask ourselves, “How's all that working for ya?” Trust me, stepping back isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity for those of us juggling family, work, and, well, life itself. Join me as I share a personal tale of kitchen chaos that spiraled into a mini-revelation, reminding us that finding breathing room is not just about escaping the noise, but about stepping into clarity. So grab your favorite beverage, kick back, and let's keep it real while we explore the importance of healthy boundaries, because (spoiler alert) you deserve it!Episode Highlights:Reflecting on our lives can be the catalyst for meaningful change and growth. It's crucial to create breathing room in our busy lives to recharge and reset. Moments of solitude help us regain clarity and perspective amidst life's chaos. Seeking appreciation is valid, but our self-worth should never depend on external validation. Taking a brief step back allows us to return to our loved ones as better versions of ourselves. Investing time in ourselves isn't selfish; it's essential for being fully present for others. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:4-7 (NIV)Related EpisodesEP 3 - Encouragement for the Woman Who is Drowning in OverwhelmEp 6 - Managing All The Things - Getting Real and Honest About Capacity with Janice CookEP 19 - FAQs About Balancing Family Life with WorkEP 23 - Reader Review: Essentialism by Greg McKeownEP 51 - Closing Open Loops to Find Your PeaceConnect with RachelWebsite: racheldbaker.comInstagram @rachel.d.baker Email rachel@racheldbaker.comIt means so much to me that you are part of this community! Breathing Room - Part 4: TimeWe’re all busy. Our schedules are packed with career, family, friends, church, and other responsibilities. Sometimes our days are so full that we don’t enjoy anything because we’re trying to do everything. Our relationships benefit when we create breathing room in our schedules. But where do we start?
On today's show Andrew and Bill begin with the fate of TikTok after a wild week of updates. Topics include: A ByteDance investor who says that TikTok may continue in the U.S. without a full divestiture, lessons for Beijing and Americans from the past few weeks, and why potential TikTok buyers might be wary of any deal structure that doesn't comply with the letter of federal law. Then: Week 1 of the Trump presidency provides some breathing room to both sides of the US-China tariff negotiations, why negotiations may not yield any structural relief to the US-China trade tensions, updates on the PRC economy, and why Beijing may be wary of a currency devaluation in the face of a new round of tariffs. At the end: Two updates on Taiwan, why the Taiwanese may want to choose better intermediaries to the U.S. government, and the absence of US-China tensions in Hollywood.
Breathing Room - Part 3: Dollars and Sense We live in a culture that continually tells us to pursue a higher standard of living in order to improve our quality of life. But “standard of living” and “quality of life” aren’t the same. One has to do with the stuff we accumulate. The other is about the peace we experience regardless of our circumstances. What if your pursuit of a standard of living is undermining your quality of life?
Breathing Room - Part 2: Choosing to CheatAt some point in our attempts to get the most out of life, we lose control of our lives. We try to force one more thing into our already busy lives and we reach the breaking point. Too much pressure causes an emotional breakdown. Too much debt causes a financial breakdown. Or maybe you’re on the verge of a breakdown in your relationships. What do you do when your work life is so full you don’t have time for the people who matter most?
In this episode I go solo and dive into the energy I'm bringing into 2025. I'm arriving softly, and at the same time with a sense of excitement. I discuss picking a word for the year and how to do that in your own way (mine is BIG...literally the word 'big'). I share about my recent tarot reading that reminded me that I don't need to worry about money or my health, and that the more I can go to the beat of my own drum the better. Maybe those were messages for all of us! I also have a teary moment where I share about the raw truths of dealing with the struggles of infertility during the holiday season. And finally, I'm thrilled to share all of the fun that's to come in this new year. The Homecoming program will now be a 3 month membership that will kick off in February. And I'll be offering a monthly virtual yoga class called Breathing Room, with the first one taking place on Monday January 20th at 8am. I am so excited to connect with you in the year to come! Breathing Room - Part 1: Ex-Squeeze Yourself Our lives are busy and fast-paced. Lack of margin increases our stress and shortens our tempers. It can distract us from the most important things in our lives, and our relationships suffer. It can even affect our relationship with God because there’s a connection between our willingness to create margin and our faith. Life, and faith, is better with breathing room.

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Bethany sits down with her good friend and mentor, Sandra Stanley, to begin a heartfelt conversation about understanding the myth of balance and accepting that, as mothers, we don't have to do it all. Sandra shares her journey of living with purposeful presence during her seasons with her children and how she has learned to say no confidently. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the boundaries of your current season of life and offers wisdom, encouragement, and the assurance that God has a perfect plan for each one of us. Sandra's insights provide a refreshing perspective on motherhood, encouraging women to redefine success not by how much they can do, but by how present and intentional they are in their everyday lives. Through their heartfelt discussion, Bethany and Sandra offer listeners a blend of practical advice and spiritual wisdom, reminding them that God has a perfect plan for each one of us, and it's okay to trust in that plan rather than trying to control every aspect of life. Learn about Sandra: Sandra and Andy Stanley founded North Point Ministries in 1995. Married for 33 years, they have three children, ages 28, 27, and 25. Sandra is the author of two women's devotional books with companion videos—Comparison Trap and Breathing Room. Her ministry passion is promoting foster care in the local church. She received her undergraduate degree from Georgia Tech and a Masters of Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. Much of her time these days is spent working on various writing projects and continuing her involvement with Fostering Together—the foster care initiative at North Point Ministries.
