Today Emmy-winning actor Patricia Heaton joins us for a candid conversation on motherhood, career, and raising four boys. We talk about the pressure parents feel to over-schedule kids, the beauty of simplicity (just give them a cardboard box!), and how God ordered her journey through motherhood and acting.  She and her husband, David Hunt, are in the business of producing movies and directed Unexpected, a film about the emotional ups and downs of infertility. Patricia believes that the best way into tough subjects is through comedy and this movie does just that. Stick around till the end where she shares her advice for helping four boys flourish -including her list of things to do as a family. Flipping the Switch to Hope: from worst-case to unimaginable good :: Heather MacFadyen [Ep 510]

I don't often do a solo podcast but God has been working on my heart when it comes to parenting teens and expectations and I felt prompted to sit down and share what I am learning with you all.   So often as parents, we live in a worst-case scenario mindset, when it feels like the dreams and expectations for a child's future are not aligning with the present. We obsess over baby monitors, teen friendships, and grades/sports but this comes from a place of worry, or even fear-based control.  God wants freedom and hope in our parenting! I realized I have a choice: to believe in an imagined bad scenario or to flip a switch and choose hope and expect in God for unimaginable good things to come. Both choices involve belief, imagination and control. I'm choosing to double down turn my belief toward hope, knowing that even when things don't go as planned, God's story is far greater. In this episode, I will share the steps God gave me to practically practice choosing hope over worry. How to walk with the Spirit and produce fruit instead of formula-based parenting rooted in power and control. Reminding my own heart that God is good and has a good story for our kids- let's lean into the HUGE expectation that God is the God of HOPE and let our prayers align with that truth.  Connect with Me:  Website:  Heather MacFadyen | Right Where You Belong Facebook: Don't Mom Alone Instagram:  Heather MacFadyen (@dontmomalone) Links Mentioned:   A Prayer for Challenging Times - Northwest Bible Church–Neil Tomba Right Where You Belong: By Heather MacFadyen Don't Mom Alone: By Heather MacFadyen Man's Search for Meaning: By Viktor Frankl  Related Episodes: Talking, Teens, and Twenty-four Years :: Bruce + Heather [Ep 399] Freeing Your Adolescents to Step Into Adulthood – Ages and Stages – Teens :: Dr. Ken Wilgus [Ep 382] How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation :: Ian Cron [Ep 506] Featured Sponsors:  HoneyLove: Treat yourself to the most comfortable bra on earth and save 20% Off sitewide at honeylove.com/dma . I can't believe it but today we are celebrating 500 episodes of Don't Mom Alone! I am bringing back my very first guest and mentor Leslie to “recap” the last eleven years. Leslie had been encouraging me from before I started this podcast and her fingerprints are all over my motherhood. We get an update on her life and she shares how to navigate the empty nest phase. Leslie reminds us of Psalms 16:6-8 (which I also wrote about in my book), “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” God is faithful in ALL seasons from newborn to empty nest.  Also, some of my listeners call in to share what Don't Mom Alone has meant to them. Here are a few of the highlights… How healing prayer ministry has been life-changing.  Be in community and reach out for help.  Become the inviter instead of waiting for others to invite you in.  Receive and give grace to others through the challenges of motherhood.  Connect with Leslie Johnson:  Website:  Sursee Gal Instagram:  Leslie Johnson

Do you ever struggle to keep Christ at the center of Christmas? Do you feel many Christmas traditions take a ton of time and energy or are just busy work but don't point to Jesus?  Today Lillian Richey, my personal friend, is here to share her new project called Finding Jesus which helps families make Christmas meaningful and simple. Last year the Lord dropped into her heart the idea of a Jesus doll that tells the whole story of Christmas through scripture and helps kids see Jesus. Through the last few months, God has used this project to bring the gospel around the world, including China, and answered prayers. In less than a year this beautiful product has come to life.  Finding Jesus points our kids to Christ and a connection to Him that goes deep into hearts and minds. This doll, puzzle, story, and song weaves together the Biblical truth with some fun.   I know, I know. You've read the title of today's show, and you're thinking there ain't a one of us who really wants to think about how much time we are spending on our various forms of technology. Myself included.    True story, recently I was considering ways I could spend more time in prayer, and I literally convinced myself that I had not one spare second in my day. As if the Holy Spirit worked for Apple, at that exact moment a notification popped up on my phone with my average screen time for the week before. And let's just say I apparently have plenty of time to pray based on the time I spend on my phone.    Darren Whitehead is the Pastor of Church of the City in Nashville, and his church did a collective digital fast that was incredibly impactful. He's talking about it on today's show, and I love how he suggests a course correction is in order now that we know the impact of excessive technology use. After all, we would do that with anything else in our life.    His approach isn't to just throw our phones out the window, but to remove the “distraction” apps and leave only the utility apps. You've got to listen today to fully appreciate this concept, but I know for me personally it sounds like exactly what needs to happen this fall.    Listen today, pray about it, and join me in reading and implementing The Digital Fast.  Okay, on another note—in case you missed it, Heather MacFadyen and I launched a new show, Sidetracked, many months ago as a part of Don't Mom Alone. Since that time, it's gained in popularity and now has a new home with the Converge podcast network as its own show. Do me a huge favor and go listen to the show here, and subscribe and even leave a review pretty please. This is a huge help as we get this new project launched. And you don't want to miss my Buc-ees story.     The Digital Fast by Darren Whitehead All things Cynthia Yanof Sidetracked with Heather MacFadyen and Cynthia Yanof

I mentioned it last month, but as a little reminder, Heather MacFadyen of the Don't Mom Alone podcast and I have a super fun show we do together called Sidetracked. As a part of this little venture, this summer we've decided to surprise each other with a guest and then release the episode on both of our shows. It's been super fun so far, and we'd love to know how you're liking it and if you want more of these shows!    On today's Sidetracked episode, Heather surprises me with author, speaker, teacher, podcaster, and enneagram expert . . . Beth McCord. We love Beth because she approaches the enneagram from a biblical perspective and helps us learn how to better navigate our personalities and figure out what makes us tick.    I think you'll especially love the real-life example at the beginning of our conversation about Heather firing off a frustrated email to Beth, and how their enneagram knowledge facilitated healthy conflict resolution. We also discuss how the enneagram intersects with our parenting, and the reasons not to “guess” your kids' number and instead have your older kids take the test themselves. (Which I'm so going to have my older kids do sometime this summer!)    Can't wait for you to hear today's show! Leave a review and share it with a friend pretty please.   All things Cynthia Yanof Connect with Beth McCord:  Website:  Your Enneagram Coach | Free Enneagram Test, Courses, and Coaching Facebook: Your Enneagram Coach Instagram: Beth McCord | (@yourenneagramcoach)

Do you feel like since 2020 your family tech rules have gone out the window? How do you handle tech guidelines if both parents are not on the same page? Do you find it difficult to manage different ages and stages when it comes to screens?  Andrea Davis, a mom of five with a degree in secondary education, is here to share a ton of wisdom and guidance on tech and screens for summer and beyond. We discuss the differences between kids earning screens, where often the screens become the entire focus of the long summer days and a family tech plan that creates more balance.  Andrea's plan for teens includes the three p's; purpose, plan, and passion. These all create space for your child to get creative and work on skills in their free time. Also, check out her boredom busters in the show notes for the days when mom needs to work, the budget is tight, or the kids are done with all of their daily tasks. This episode is full of practical ideas but more importantly, Andrea reminds us that our kids want time with us and shaping their character and who God created them to be is more important than rules and regulations.  Connect with Andrea Davis:  Website:  Better Screen Time | Andrea Davis Facebook: Better Screen Time Instagram:  Leading Families to Slow Tech • Andrea Davis (@betterscreentime) Links Mentioned:   Summer Screen Time Survival Guide 100+ Screen-Free Boredom Busters for Kids and Teens Aro | Turn Screen Time into Family Time Digital Minimalism: by Cal Newport Atomic Habits: by James Clear Related Episodes: Time and Space for Flourishing in a Tech World :: Andy Crouch [Ep 208] Cultivating a Healthy Relationship with Tech :: Joey Odom [Ep 425] Braving the Tech Landscape Through Connection :: Chris McKenna [Ep 424] Featured Sponsors:  Vegamour–Give your hair the power of the little pink bottle with Vegamour. Here's a fun little podcast update for you.    As most of you (hopefully) know, Heather MacFadyen of the Don't Mom Alone podcast and I have a little sideshow we do once a month called Sidetracked. Basically, it's an unfiltered conversation between the two of us discussing life's goings on, parenting, faith, etc. It comes out the first Friday of the month on Don't Mom Alone, and It's been a big hit.    So, spinning off from that concept this week, we're doing a second episode of Sidetracked in the summer months that includes a surprise guest aired on both of our shows. And today is the day we kick it off with our friend Toni Collier. Please hear me:  You do not want to miss a second of this conversation.    If you don't know Toni, she's  the author of Broken Crayons Still Color as well as a podcaster, speaker, and mom of two sweet kiddos. We also spent time talking about her classic Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World and how that message has stayed applicable through the years. We want to worship at the feet of Jesus like Mary but the Martha in us keeps bossing us around, telling us to work harder and strive more. Joanna reminds us that if we tend our connection with the Lord everything else flows out of that place. The tasks and needs do not disappear but the ability to tackle them with grace, tranquility, and truth increases as we spend time at the feet of Jesus.   Connect with Joanna Weaver:  Website:  Christian Author and Speaker - Joanna Weaver Facebook: Joanna Weaver Books Instagram:  Joanna Weaver | Christian Author (@joannaweaverbooks) Links Mentioned:   Podcast - Joanna Weaver Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World: by Joanna Weaver Embracing Trust: by Joanna Weaver Don't Mom Alone: by Heather MacFadyen  Related Episodes: The What, Why and Work-through of Panic Attacks :: Kasey Van Norman [Ep 452] Inner Healing Prayer :: Jennifer Barnett [Ep 323] Set Free From Shame :: Jeannie Cunnion [Ep 190] Exchange False Beliefs with True Identity :: Jamie Winship [Ep 433] Featured Sponsors:  Skylight Calendar - Get 15% off a Skylight Calendar at SkylightCal.com/ALONE Greenlight- Greenlight is a debit card and money app made for families. We also get sidetracked talking about all of the end-of-school year emotions including Cynthia's current struggle over her first grader's learning and reading challenges. Parenting is a treacherous journey – don't we all know this to be true! But the beautiful thing is, we don't have to do it alone. We shouldn't do it alone. Today I talk with Heather MacFadyen, the founder of a brand and podcast called Don't Mom Alone, about the idea of community. It can be awkward to seek out and pray specifically for, but we'll be better parents if we find like-minded people to walk through this with. And Heather says that of course, parents matter, but we're not the end-all, be-all, and that's both hard and incredibly freeing to realize. IT'S FINALLY FALL!    The air is crisp (at least for Dallas), the pumpkin lattes are flowing, and the mums are blooming.    In honor of the change in seasons, this week we're taking a quick break from our “Trusting God” series to have a few laughs with my dear friend, Heather MacFadyen from Don't Mom Alone.    We're laughing/lamenting about everything from Homecoming Mums, teen language we don't understand, and even some of the hard things going on in our lives these days.    I especially appreciate Heather's thoughts on the comparison trap and how to identify the struggle and make strides to move forward. And we also hit on sibling rivalry and helping our kids handle conflict well.    Last thing . . . if you don't already know, Heather and I have a monthly podcast called “Sidetracked” that releases on Don't Mom Alone podcast the first Friday of every month. Today is a a little peek into that show. If you love it, please subscribe to Don't Mom Alone where Heather and I will be teaming up the first Friday of every month!   Happy Fall!   All things Cynthia Don't Mom Alone Podcast

If you're anything like me you may have had a negative definition of humility. A definition that may mean punishment, or to make yourself less than. Maybe it was even used against you in response to an action. What if biblical humility doesn't start with doing or being less, but instead starts with fully recognizing and living in your God-given space. What if biblical humility begins with stepping into the life God has for you? My friend Heather MacFadyen is back on The Happy Hour today. Heather is the host of the popular parenting podcast Don't Mom Alone, with more than 20 million downloads from around the globe, as well as the author of the book Don't Mom Alone. She finds great joy in connecting other women to mentors and experts through her podcast and in speaking at live events with women across the country. She and her husband and their four sons live in Dallas, Texas. Her newest book, Right Where You Belong, was released last April. On today's show Heather challenges us to identify our God-given space and to fully occupy that space. She encourages us to walk in humility by trusting God with the journey and finding comfort and peace in the fact that we don't know, but we follow and serve an all knowing God! Hello from Colorado!   We're FINALLY on family vacation, and the high temps are in the 70s and the lows are in the 40s. I basically want to rededicate my life to Jesus, I'm so happy right now.    But I'm also excited for today's show because it's a free-flow of my thoughts around the book I'm reading on vacation (Atomic Habits) and the ways our habits shape our spiritual lives. I also share a little insight into the many ways Colorado has not been our friend over the years–yet we're back again.    I cannot stress to you enough that you need to follow me on social to see a video I will be posting of an “incident” that occurred last time we were here.    As an added bonus, I end today's show with a conversation that Heather MacFadyen and I recently taped for her Don't Mom Alone podcast. We talk about communicating with our kids, carpool disasters, and the value of an “easy yes” in parenting.    This is definitely a summer episode that doesn't disappoint. Where do our children belong? How do they know what God's plans for them include? How has God gifted them to contribute in this world? Should they compare themselves to everyone else? These are some of the questions I'm tackling on the podcast this week with my friend Heather MacFadyen, of Don't Mom Alone. Heather walks us through some of the brilliant concepts in her new book, Right Where You Belong, to help us learn how to help our children find their place in the world. You won't want to miss this one! (It might just give you a sense of knowing where you belong, too)! *********** Today's show is brought to you by our newest Prayer Guide, Praying God's Word for Your Child to Find Their Purpose, by Brittany Ann, of Equipping Godly Women. Tackle the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” from a biblical perspective. The way our children answer this common question varies wildly from day to day. From teacher, to fire-fighter, to astronaut, to juggler, we just never know what they'll say. For young children, this question is full of promise and excitement. They can be anything they want! The sky's the limit, and it's fun to dream. But as our children get older, this question takes on new meaning. The excitement of endless possibilities gradually gives way to the pressure of choosing the right college, career, job, or relationship. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” becomes stressful, almost agonizing, as young adults wrestle with major decisions that will undoubtedly affect the rest of their lives. But what if finding their purpose didn't have to be so stressful? What if our children could know with confidence exactly what God wants them to do? In Praying God's Word for Your Child to Find Their Purpose, you'll pray for God to work in your children's hearts to: Draw near to God in sincere faith Be guided by the Holy Spirit Learn how to love sacrificially and with intention Learn to walk in God's strength instead of their own Find rest in God alone Understand God's bigger plan Submit their plans to God's And more! With biblical teaching, scripture-inspired prayers, and space to journal using our Think, Pray, Praise method of daily prayer, this digital prayer guide is perfect for the busy mom who needs God to move in the hearts of her kids. Learn more here. There's some exciting news around here I've been waiting to share!    My dear friend Heather MacFadyen and host of the very popular Don't Mom Alone podcast has asked me to be on her show for the next six weeks. We're doing a summer of mentorship series and the first episode is out now. We're covering all kinds of parenting tips as well as “important topics” like the time my son put a cherry bomb exhaust system on his truck and even Heather's texting habit that needs an intervention. Don't miss it this summer.    In honor of this fun announcement I've invited Heather to join us on MESSmerized today. We're taking a deeper look at how to know if you're in the space God has for you and how to occupy it well. Heather has a great word for us when it comes to dealing with comparison struggles, hearing God's voice in our lives, and recognizing (and encouraging) our kids' giftings from the earliest age. Right Where You Belong is her new book out on this topic and a must-read.    I'm so grateful to each of you who listen each week. I would be grateful if you would share MESSmerized with your people.

What if I told you that shrinking back when you're called to something big is not a display of humility? It is so ingrained in us, especially as women, to think of ourselves as less-than in an effort to be humble. But what if it's actually pride that makes us play small?  This idea of understanding true humility was a big focus for me when I wrote Standing Strong, and I couldn't wait to have a conversation with my friend Heather about it!  Heather MacFadyen is the one to talk about this with because she shares such good insight on this very thing in her new book, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify and Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space.  And we're not holding back on this one! Join us as we talk about:  Four boundary lines that will help you identify the core of the assignments God has for you in this season How to use those boundary lines as a decision-making tool Ways to process rejection in a way that invites God into it The impact of social media on mom guilt and shame, and why we need an inner circle How to listen to God as an important first step in everything you do (and Heather's example of what that process looks like for her!)  Each time Heather visits the show she brings truth and wisdom. You can listen to her last visit where where she shares about the dangers of comparison. Her relatable stories remind moms they are never alone in the pursuit of becoming the best mom they can be.  Heather MacFadyen is the host of the Don't Mom Alone podcast, a speaker, and the author of two books, including her latest, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify and Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space.  Heather lives with her husband and their four sons in Dallas, TX. Favorite quotes: “You don't have to hustle. You can trust that God is outside your space hustling on your behalf.” “Nothing new is under the sun. It is just are we doing it. Are we inviting God into our decisions and are we looking for his invitations for what he is doing?” “God speaks through the Holy Spirit in us and through His word and we can know if it is him if it resonates with the truth of who he has always been and what is written.” “Your current living is what dictates your future moments so how are you spending that time.” “When we experience God it ignites the Spirit in us and we can hear those promptings and invitations.”  “If you have never sat and listened to God's voice, what he thinks about you, and what he is inviting you into, that would be a great first step.” Coaching this week:  Believing the best about our partners. And, that you'll join our team to help other moms not go it alone.  Links Mentioned:   DMA Podcast Club Info Redeeming Shame Through Community :: Dr. Curt Thompson [Ep 308] Related Episodes: Introducing the GCM Podcast Club — Carla Goodwin— Oct 2016 Answering Your Questions—Heather—Ep 276 Winning Together as Co-Laborers —Heather—Ep 367  Featured Sponsors:  Stitch Fix—Sign up today at StitchFix.com/DMA to get $20 off your first purchase.
