Magnificat - a song of hope, love and revolution

As the Christmas festival continues, Roy Jenkins explores – with the help of a range of guests – the significance of one of the best known seasonal texts. The Magnificat is an outpouring of joy from Mary, on hearing the news from the Archangel Gabriel that she is to give birth to Jesus. The text, from St Luke's Gospel, will have been heard in many churches during the past few weeks as part of the telling of the Christmas story. There have been countless musical settings down the centuries – ranging from single line Gregorian chant to more florid settings from JS Bach and Palestrina, and in the present day from composers such as John Tavener and Arvo Pärt. As the Magnificat has an important place in Roman Catholic and Anglican liturgy, there are numerous settings for singing in the daily round of Vespers and Choral Evensongs in our cathedrals and churches. On the face of it, the Magnificat or “Mary's Song” as it's sometime known, isn't such good news for the mighty who will be unseated, and the rich who will be sent empty away. The German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer who was executed by the Nazis, described the Magnificat as “the most passionate, the wildest… the most revolutionary hymn ever sung.” But after a year during which we have seen the start of a war, a rise in the cost of living, a widening of the gap between rich and poor, continuing pestilence and the ravages of climate change, what hope can we glean from it for 2023? Our guests: The Rt Revd Mary Stallard, Assistant Bishop of Bangor. Andrew Wilson-Dickson, composer and Cardiff-based musician. Dr Emma Gibbins, Director of Music, St Woolos Cathedral, Newport. Revd Dr Craig Gardiner, Tutor at South Wales Baptist College and Cardiff University. Sean Stillman, Minister at Zac's Place, Swansea, and International President of God Squad. Revd Dr Jennie Hurd, Chair of Wales Synod Cymru of the Methodist Church. The programme includes extracts of settings of the Magnificat by Sir John Tavener, JS Bach, Charles Villiers Stanford, Richard Shephard, and Margaret Rizza.

This week we change tracks a little and catch up with Dr Richard Shephard of Herd Health, a specialist animal health company which Richard founded in 1998 to address multi-disciplinary problems of animal and human health and animal production.Richards started as a clinical dairy veterinarian, who then went on to do post-grad training in epidemiology, whilst also working as a  farm management consultant. This career path made him step back and view the dairy farm very, very differently. This is one of those "not to be missed" episodes of Head Shepherd where the lifetime of insights provided by Richard are truly invaluable. Mark and Richard discuss industry indices, and how they're all well and good for regional populations, but how knowing your farm and your flock are far more essential to boost profit. They also cover the outlook in the future for breeding "low input" animals, and what that could mean for the animal as a whole. Last year's Netflix original, THE PERFECTION, starring Allison Williams and Logan Browning, received some general buzz after the station promoted it robustly. Its interesting twists and turns as it dabbed its toes in various horror subgenres gave it some legs and a larger audience that included thriller fans. Either way the film was very polarizing as a result. Charlotte (Allison Williams), a cello prodigy, had to quit training to return to take care of her mother. While away, Bachoff Academy and its headmaster, Anton (Steven Weber), took on a new sensation, Lizzie Wells (Logan Browning). During a new recruiting mission to Shanghai, China, Lizzie and Charlotte become close and decide to take a trip across China as a vacation. Soon secrets are revealed that may show each isn't who they say they are nor is Bachoff Academy as it may seem. Directed by television director Richard Shephard, the film appeared in Q2 of 2019 to fairly good reviews. With its change of theme at least three times, the movie did confuse some while appearing quite different in tone to others. Dark Discussions decides to take a look at this contentious movie.

[Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] Composer Rolfe Kent joins us for the last All Access of 2017! Rolfe talks about his early years and how quickly he knew he wanted to be a composer when he was younger. After securing a job he packed up and moved to Los Angeles where he never looked back. Some of his first scores were for the tantalizing Playboy series called Inside Out where Rolfe Kent would cement his entire career by meeting directors like Alexander Payne and Richard Shephard who directed segments for the sexy series. We talk about how these relationships evolved and how the directors he works with are actually his close friends. Rolfe examines his work with directors like Mark Waters, Richard Shephard, actor Jason Bateman, Jason Reitman and of course Alexander Payne. We talk about the unique premise for Downsizing and how Rolfe approached the score for Alexander's newest film. Other topics include navigating licensed music used in a movie, how Rolfe doesn't look at movies in terms of genre and how boredom usually leads to innovation. Rolfe is such a versatile composer whose work always finds the emotional center of a film, and it was an honor to have him as a guest!
