Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, is a cult classic teen comedy based on Rosalind Wiseman's book Queen Bees and Wannabes. The film humorously yet accurately portrays the harsh realities of high school social dynamics, focusing on cliques, peer pressure, and the impact of popularity on self-identity. The story follows Cady Heron, a homeschooled girl navigating the cutthroat social hierarchy of public high school life after moving from Africa. As she infiltrates "The Plastics," the school's most popular clique, Cady faces a moral dilemma that tests her values, self-image, and relationships. Though often comedic, the movie sheds light on serious issues like bullying, conformity, and the challenges of adolescence. In this episode, Kevin Stoller, Nancy Shapiro Rapport, and Steven Shapiro discuss the movie through the lens of parenting and education. They explore the challenges faced by kids and parents in today's society, particularly focusing on the mental health crisis and the breakdown of family structures. The conversation delves into character analyses, the impact of school environments, and the importance of emotional health in raising children.   Takeaways: Consistent, intentional conversations about values and behavior are essential for raising resilient, emotionally healthy children. Small, deliberate actions can lead to significant, long-term results. A strong family culture, built on open communication and shared values, can help children navigate social pressures and define their identity. Parents need to engage in ongoing discussions about kindness, respect, and self-worth. Technology has fundamentally changed how teens communicate and form relationships. Setting boundaries around device use and fostering in-person connections can help counteract the isolating effects of screen time. Adolescence is a time of self-discovery, and social interactions can be intense and confusing. Understanding the pressures teens face helps parents provide better support. Schools can support parents by reinforcing positive behaviors and values, while communities can provide a support network for parents navigating the challenges of raising children. Comedy can be an effective way to connect with teens, understand their world, and initiate meaningful conversations. Movies like Mean Girls use humor to highlight real issues in adolescence.     About Steven Shapiro: Steven Shapiro is a veteran school reimaginer, with over 30 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience, 15 concurrent years as a high school humanities program director, and four years as a district leader of experiential learning. Steven is the host of the acclaimed podcast Experience Matters. He delivers keynote presentations on topics including supporting parents in the digital age, addressing the youth mental health crisis, and designing authentic learning experiences. Steven and his wife Susan are the proud parents of three adult children.   About Nancy Shapiro Rapport: Nancy spent the majority of her 34-year public-education career as a school counselor, supporting students and parents in navigating the challenging “middle years.” Her leadership roles in professional development and crisis management showcased her ability to identify needs, empathize with various stakeholders, and deliver results. As a certified Hudson Institute coach, Nancy has extensive training in coaching and human development. She has taught courses on learner mindset and question thinking, helping adults pursue a life of curiosity, inquiry, and possibility. Nancy brings a wealth of experience in both child and adult learning to her role as co-founder of Our Family Culture. Most importantly, she is the proud parent of two adult children, Emily and Jacob.     Learn More About Our Family Culture: Website: https://ourfamilyculture.org/     Connect with Steven Shapiro: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-shapiro-experience-matters/   Connect with Nancy Shapiro Rapport: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysrapport/   Connect with host, Kevin Stoller: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinstoller/     Episode 226 of the Better Learning Podcast Kevin Stoller is the host of the Better Learning Podcast and Co-Founder of Kay-Twelve, a national leader for educational furniture. Our exit today has us hanging out with fashion models and trying to get our big break in the Cape Cod League. Strauss, Ed Decter and David Kidd and directed by Mark Waters. Next, we will talk about Summer Catch, written by Kevin Falls and John Gatins and directed by Michael Tollin. Both films have Freddie Prinze Jr. involved in a romantic situation while trying to advance his career (sort of). They also did not make much noise at the box office. Along the way, we discuss some creepy subplots, Brian Dennehy, Bruce Davison, fake New York City, fake Cape Cod, our love of baseball, Rear Window, some questionable romances, and podcast regular Matthew Lillard. Mean Girls is a teen comedy directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey. It is based on the self-help book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. The film opened in theaters on April 30, 2004. The movie follows high schooler Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) as she tries to fit in after years of homeschooling abroad. Cady starts hanging out with the Plastics, a clique of popular, stuck-up girls. The group consists of Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), and leader Regina George (Rachel McAdams). Cady agrees to help her friend Janis (Lizzy Caplan) get revenge on Regina so Cady can go out with Regina's boyfriend Aaron (Jonathan Bennett). Other characters include Janis and Cady's friend Damian (Daniel Franzese), math teacher Ms. Norbury (Tina Fey), principal Mr. Duvall (Tim Meadows), and Mrs. George (Amy Poehler). Upon release, Mean Girls garnered praise for its humor and cast. It grossed $130 million on a budget of only $17 million. It went on to become a cultural phenomenon, generating catchphrases, fads, and homages. It also led to a made-for-TV sequel and Broadway musical which got its own film adaptation. “Mean Girls” – written by Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters – is arguably the most culturally pervasive film of the 21st Century. Since it was released in 2004, the film spawned a successful Broadway musical, a direct-to-DVD sequel, and a musical FILM reboot in 2024. Its quotes and catchphrases were almost immediately adopted by the American public, and can be heard pretty much everywhere to this day. “On Wednesdays we wear pink.” “I'm not a regular mom, I'm a cool mom.” “Stop trying to make fetch happen.” Twenty years later they remain as potent as ever. So it's important to meet them wherever they are and woo the heck out of them.So in this episode, we're going straight to the heart of the matter by talking about B2B marketing lessons from 500 Days of Summer with the help of our guest, April Weber. April leads integrated marketing at Infobip. Together, we're talking about how to meet the customer wherever they're at in the non-linear buyer's journey, the importance of presenting your products honestly, and incorporating real stories in your marketing. So brace your tender heart for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, April WeberApril Weber is Director of Integrated Marketing at Infobip, having joined the company in 2022 as CX Expert. Prior to joining Infobip, April served as Director of New Demand Solutions at INFUSEmedia. She has also held marketing and demand roles at companies like QuinStreet and HID Global.About InfobipInfobip is a global leader in omnichannel engagement powering a broad range of messaging channels, tools and solutions for advanced customer engagement, authentication and security. Over the last 15 years, they've grown into an Engineering Powerhouse with 70+ offices in 6 continents and over 3,700 experts, aiming to change how the world communicates.About 500 Days of Summer500 Days of Summer is a love story about a relationship that lasted 500 days with a girl named Summer. And the story plays out in flashbacks to memories of the relationship. The main character, Tom, meets Summer after she becomes the new hire at his job, a paper greeting card company. They start seeing each other, but Summer says she doesn't believe in love and so it's casual even though Tom wants more than that. They end up arguing and breaking up and Summer quits her job at their company. The next time they see each other, Tom notices an engagement ring, which raises all the questions about why she wouldn't want to settle down with him, but felt true love with someone else. When Tom does meet someone new, he finds out her name is Autumn. The movie came out in 2009 and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom and Zooey Deschanel as Summer. It was directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, and produced by Mark Waters. It's an indie movie that premiered at Sundance, and was picked up by Fox Searchlight Pictures. It's generally considered a sleeper hit, and brought in $60 million worldwide. It had had a $7.5 million budget. What B2B Companies Can Learn From 500 Days of Summer: The buying journey is often non-linear, so meet the customer where they are. Ian says, “People want that extremely organized fashion, and other people don't. You as the marketer need to plan those different pathways and journeys, and to be able to tell stories in the moments that matter.” It's like how in 500 Days of Summer, the story is told in flashbacks to Tom and Summer's relationship. In the beginning, the viewer needs to see the positive parts of their relationship to understand Tom's attachment to the relationship. And then as the story goes along, we see the disconnects and the miscommunications, the more negative parts of the relationship. That's how the viewer understands that Tom is falling out of love with Summer and healing from the breakup. So as the marketer, you need to highlight the moments that matter for your customers and meet them where they are in their buying journey.Present your products honestly and transparently. Over-hyping your products in marketing is misleading, and ultimately leads to disappointment where customers aren't likely to return. April ties this back to 500 Days of Summer when she says, “Tom idealized his relationship with Summer. We fall into that trap when we're over-hyping our products or solutions to potential clients, when honesty and transparency are crucial in building trust.” So though it's tempting to play up your products to get higher engagement and sales, don't do it. Present their real benefits and you'll earn audience trust. Incorporate real stories. 500 Days of Summer was inspired by a real relationship screenplay writer Scott Neustadter was in while studying in London. April says that “because it was a real story, it was relatable to me. We should be doing the same thing. We should be doing this with our clients, with our content. It adds a human touch. It resonates deeply, I think, when you can actually incorporate real stories behind it.” So add that human touch to your marketing by including real stories in it. It makes your content more relatable and more human.Quotes*”We should always focus on emotional connections and relatable storytelling, whether that's B2B content or B2C content. To make an emotional connection with your audience no matter who they are.” - April Weber*“500 Days of Summer made us laugh. It made us feel sad. And it definitely makes you reminisce about your own experience, which is a great way to have any kind of content. If you can get in all the emotions at once, that's awesome.” - April WeberTime Stamps[0:55] Meet April Weber, Integrated Marketing Manager at Infobip [1:40] Why are we talking about 500 Days of Summer?[4:13] What is April responsible for at Infobip? [5:14] What is 500 Days of Summer about? [10:32] Why is 500 Days of Summer remarkable?[12:28] What marketing lessons can we glean from 500 Days of Summer?[32:58] What's April's content strategy at Infobip? [38:44] How does April think about the ROI of content?LinksWatch 500 Days of SummerConnect with April on LinkedInLearn more about InfobipAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. We're diving into the beloved and infinitely quotable High School comedy Mean Girls, including bullying, anthropological studies, fashion, downtown Africa, wearing pink on Wednesdays, and we discuss if the film falls into the trap of becoming that which it satirizes. You go Glen Coco! Mean Girls is a 2004 American teen comedy film directed by Mark Waters, written by Tina Fey, and starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried (in her film acting debut), Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler and Fey. The supporting cast includes Lizzy Caplan, Jonathan Bennett, Daniel Franzese and Neil Flynn. The screenplay is based in part on Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes, which describes female high school social cliques, school bullying and the damaging effect they can have on teenagers. Fey also drew from her own experience at Upper Darby High School as an inspiration for some of the concepts in the film.[3] The plot centers on naïve teenage girl Cady Heron (Lohan) navigating her way through the social hierarchy of a modern American high school after years of her parents homeschooling her while conducting research in Africa. Cady is new and still finding her way in high school. "Darling. Could you, like, chill for a sec?" We watched "Freaky Friday" (2003) with friend of the pod Devin Lotfi and we want to get a little ear-stud right... there. Man oh man, this movie is fun! Lindsay Lohan and Queen Jamie Lee Curtis are having a blast and it shows on screen - the two are at their best in scenes with each other. We spend some time talking about the 1976 original with Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, and even the oft forgotten Disney Channel Original Movie (or DCOM if you're nasty) from 1995 with Shelley Long and Gabby Hoffman, but this Mark Waters classic is really the one that has aged like fine wine. Will we ever get a "re-quel" with Jamie Lee and Lindsay? We can only hope. Did Chad Michael Murray's career come to an all-too-abrupt halt? Maybe. Are the early-aughts fashions both great and terrible? Absolutely. Listen, Lindsay is showing that early promise everyone always talked about, Jamie Lee is swinging for the fences with her comedic choices and director Mark Waters would team up again with Linds the following year to give us the utterly homosexual classic "Mean Girls." On this week's episode of the Dairy Edge, Mark Waters, Co-ordinator of the DNA Registration Project at ICBF joins Stuart Child to discuss the National Genotyping scheme that was launched recently by the Minister for Agriculture. Mark starts by telling us exactly what genotyping is and what it has to offer both farmers and the industry as a whole.  He says that it is hard to overstate the value of genotyping and that the big thing will be the rate of gain that will be achievable. This has the potential to allow for more palatable actions with regard to climate change targets compared to some of the actions that are currently being suggested, such as a large scale reduction in animal numbers . Mark then explains how farmers can sign up for the scheme, what they have to do in 2023 and what is expected from 2024 onwards when the DNA registration process will start in earnest. Finally, Mark highlights that the purpose of the scheme is to genotype the existing herd to allow for the DNA registration process to become a reality and that people are committing to this when signing up.  It is imperative that people take samples and return them in a timely manner to facilitate preparation for the DNA registration next spring.     For more episodes from the Dairy Edge podcast go to the show page at: https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/dairy/the-dairy-edge-podcast/ The Dairy Edge is a co-production with LastCastMedia.com

Directed by Mark Waters. Stars Lindsay Lohan, Jonathan Bennett Rachel McAdams Let me preface this episode. Right out the gate, this is not our best work. I think Craig and I (Adam) really struggled with this episode for a number of reasons. We gave it a chance as we always appreciate our fans and we wanted to give something back to our listeners. We recorded the episode and realised we had a few flaws with this. We just didn't care for this movie. By that I mean, It's a great movie, not one we'd have chosen. We had no skin in this. It was hard to talk about a movie where everything thing has been said before. Craig did his best with the edit and we think this is the best we could do. So we really questioned about uploading this. We didn't want to throw an episode away. And maybe we're just being really harsh on ourselves. Voice over tells us it's her first day of school, that she had been home schooled in Africa. She goes into a class and after a few funny interactions, and she ends up bumping in to Tina Feys, Ms. Norbury. Tim Meadows Mr. Duvall then comes in to introduce Kady, and low key hits on Ms. Norbury. At lunch, she's shown eating in the bathroom. The next day she sits with Janice and Damian. The skip class and we're introduced to the Plastics, Karen, Gretchen, and Regina George, evil incarnate. A montage of people talking about Regina. Cady is given a map to survive school, with a lunch room map to help her navigate. Regina saves Cady from a guy hitting on her, and invites her to sit with the plastics for the rest of the week. She's convinced to do it, and finds her crush in math class. At lunch the next day, she begins to learn the plastic rules. She divulges the crush was Aaron Samuels, Reginas ex. She's approached to join the Matheletes, and she goes shopping with the plastics. They see Jason, Gretchen's crush, with another girl and Regina calls her mom acting like she's planned parenthood. It was Fetch.-S:-2004 Lindsay Lohan was 18-Do you wonder if Rachel McAdams hates that she took this role? She was 26 when she shot this movie.-In reference to the lunch map, do you think it could be made today? Asian nerds, unfriendly black hotties, etc?The girls go to Reginas house and we meet her little sister and mom, who has an obvious boob job, and asserts there are no rules, because she's a "cool mom." In Reginas room, which was her parents room, she finds the Burn Book and accidentally has a comment about Damian added. Janis tries to convince Cady to steal it, which she refuses, and hey have an awkward encounter with Ms. Norbury. Cady is then caught in a phone attack with Regina. She starts to talk to Aaron more and is invited to a halloween party. She doesn't know about the 'slut rule' and shows up as a scary bride. Regina falsely tells Aaron some lies about Cady, simultaneously stealing him. Cady admits to hating Regina and goes to Janice and Damian, they hatch plan to take her down. Cady begins to attempt to sabotage Regina, peppermint foot cream for her face, holes cut in her shirt, and they backfire. Regina tells Cady her history with Janice. She leverages Gretchen for info. Then the talent show. Damian sings, Kevin raps, and Cady and the plastics perform to Jingle Bell Rock. Gretchen thinks Regina is mad at her, and she finally cracks. trap but she-S:-it is surprising how fucking mean these girls are... Watching it objectively and as a parent.-The whole slut halloween thing... I don't care what grade my child is in, she's not going out dressed like that while she still lives at home. What I can't see, i can't stop.-Think girls are really this underhanded?Cady, Janice and Damian begin to try to get Aaron to catch Regina cheating on him. Cady gives some exposition on being in the plastics vs not. She intentionally dives in math to get Aaron to tutor her, and they kiss, and Cady tells him Regina is cheating on him, and Aaron breaks up with Regina. The plan then moves on to break up the "Army of Skanks." Regina tries a dress on and she can't fit into it, and the "hot body" is gone. Ms. Norbury tells Cady she's failing math, which riles her and she rants into the burn book. Cady three way ambushes Regina, which devolves into 4 panel call back and forth, where Gretchen tells Karen the Regina says people don't like her because she's a "slut," when Karen tells Regina she doesn't want to hang out, she's told: "Boo you whore." and is hung up on. At lunch the next day, Regina is told she can't sit with them because she's wearing sweat pants, which she admits is the only thing that fits. She leaves, bumps into a large girl, and is called a fat ass. Army of Skanks is crossed off. Cady has become the queen bee, and convinces her parents to leave her for a night and she decides to throw a small get together, which isn't small. Aaron arrives and they can't find each other, then Regina arrives. Aaron and Cady talk in her room, she admits to being good and math, is caught by Regina and vomits on Aaron, who calls her a Regina clone. As he leaves, she's then caught by Damian and Janice for not coming to her art show and they have it out, and calls her a mean girl and a bitch, and she knows she's right.S:-I swear, if I ever hear of my kid intentionally doing badly to spend time with a boy... ugh.-I hate to use this term, but I hate how toxic these kids are.Regina realizes the bars she's been eating are weight gaining and loses her mind. She adds herself to the burn book and turns it into Mr. Duvall. As he's talking to the girls, Regina is shown to be dropping copies of the burn book all through the school. As class lets out, all the girls start fighting, and Regina watches the frey. The girls have gone wild. Mr. Duvall pulls the fire alarm and all the girls are told to meet in the gym. For an attitude re-adjustment. Mr. Duvall doesn't do well, and Ms. Norbury shoots her shot and has the cliques directly address their issues. Regina asserts she's a victim and when asked if anyone feels personally victimized by Regina, everyone raises their hands, including the teachers and mr. Duvall. Ms. Norbury gives Cady a chance to own up, but she doesn't. Then everyone is supposed to write apologies and trust fall. Janice reveals the whole plan to take Regina down, she storms out of the gym with Cady following. Cady tries to explain herself, but Regina isn't hearing any of it, and as she's telling her off and telling her to shove it up her... She's hit by a bus. Cady is shown at home, and how divided she has become from her parents, and she is grounded.S:-Popping the fire alarm doesn't make the sprinklers go off, only heat. The next day, no one will speak to her, Janice and Damian moved her seat, she eats lunch in the bathroom, in math class, Ms. Norbury is being investigated for selling drugs. Cady admits to writing about Ms. Norbury in the burn book. She started apologizing, with Regina, Ms. Norbury who gives her a lot of crap, apologizes and is forgiven. There is a montage of everyone getting ready for the spring fling, and Cady is shown wearing a mathletes shirt. She is participating in a mathlete competition, while the spring dance is occuring. The competition is tied, and each team chooses the girls. As she judges her, she realizes that doesn't mean she still can't lose... She gets the answer correct and they win. Cady goes to the dance, and wins the queen title. She gives a speech, brakes the crown in pieces, and gives them out to everyone. She, Damian and Janis make up. She and Aaron make up and kiss, Ms. Norbury and Mr. Duvall are shown dancing. Reginas spine healed, and she channeled her rage into sports, because those girls weren't afraid of her, Karen used her special talent for the morning weather report, Gretchen found a new clique, Aaron went to Northwestern and they still saw each other. Girl world was at peace and if any freshmen plastics tried to change that... well, they wouldn't get hit with a bus.S:-I like the feel good ending. Getting hit by a bus would probably make you re-think some life choices... BUT, everyone getting along like that? It's totally unrealistic. There will always be cliques, groups, people who embrace and reject that also; as well as people who think they're better than everyone else... But I like the idea of being able to change, grow, and learn also. Webpage: https://theguysreview.simplecast.com/EM: theguysreviewpod@gmail.comIG: @TheGuysReviewPodTwitter: @The_GuysReviewFB: https://facebook.com/TheGuysReviewPod/
