Send us a textWoHos!Welp. This week we looked at two films, all right. Mom hated THE PERFECTION and there was no love lost between Mac & STOPMOTION.CW for mention/suggestion of child rape in THE PERFECTION and childhood trauma in STOPMOTION.Both films are about mental illness and both fail spectacularly in its depiction. THE PERFECTION could have been a joyous, campy romp, but it is too careless with its subject matter and results in a horribly distasteful mess.STOPMOTION has some wonderful stop motion sequences which may be worth the price of admission, but even with its short run time, it overstays its welcome. This was a fun conversation about two repellent films.Next time we are covering two films that deal with class warfare: READY OR NOT & THE PLATFORM. In addition to having the three writing fellows on, we were also joined by Hartbeat's Head of Film, Candice Wilson-Cherry, who takes us through how the program is designed to directly address the lack of BIPOC women in leadership positions like showrunners and in writers' rooms. We also were joined by Hey Boo director Logan Browning who you might know from The Perfection and Dear White People. She remembers this being one of the loneliest times in her life. [2:44] Marsha opens up about having a lonely childhood as well, and not knowing where to belong. The two share an intimate moment about how scary finding acceptance and belonging can be. [14:56] Logan talks about becoming a Black female director and honing in on the stories that feel true to the culture. She breaks down the narratives she finds in modern films that make her weary. [29:04]  Marsha asks Logan how she thinks we can teach young people to see a future for themselves, especially as current school curriculum history books certainly don't include everyone. Last year's Netflix original, THE PERFECTION, starring Allison Williams and Logan Browning, received some general buzz after the station promoted it robustly. Its interesting twists and turns as it dabbed its toes in various horror subgenres gave it some legs and a larger audience that included thriller fans. Either way the film was very polarizing as a result. Charlotte (Allison Williams), a cello prodigy, had to quit training to return to take care of her mother. While away, Bachoff Academy and its headmaster, Anton (Steven Weber), took on a new sensation, Lizzie Wells (Logan Browning). During a new recruiting mission to Shanghai, China, Lizzie and Charlotte become close and decide to take a trip across China as a vacation. Soon secrets are revealed that may show each isn't who they say they are nor is Bachoff Academy as it may seem. Directed by television director Richard Shephard, the film appeared in Q2 of 2019 to fairly good reviews. With its change of theme at least three times, the movie did confuse some while appearing quite different in tone to others. Dark Discussions decides to take a look at this contentious movie.

When Netflix first announced they would be making Dear White People way back in early 2017, I was pretty excited. After all, the film was pretty good even if the trailers gave away the best moments of the film. Season 3 continues the strong tradition people have learned to expect from past seasons: A strong cast, a completely socially aware series and enough laughs to keep pushing you into the next episode. That’s not to say “Dear White People” is without its flaws. As the entirely self aware cast explains, a third season of a Netflix show struggles to stay relevant, even with the best of minds. Just ask “House of Cards” or “Stranger Things.” But it can be done. In tis case our series lead Sam White (played by the incredibly talented Logan Browning) is off on an adventure of self-discovery while there is no real director for the season. While I am unsure if the whole “what is my purpose” thing is good for any series, Browning manages to make things work, even if it means she runs the risk of fading into the role of a secondary character. In fact the directionless plot forces each episode to tackle new problems in the traditional format of what we’ve come to expect from a cable show. For those who liked Sam’s activist quest and the resident’s of Parker-Armstrong’s fight for… integrated… or segregated… housing… you’ll be disappointed. Our heroes are suffering from the same fatigue the nation is suffering from. People are tired of protesting. In a nutshell, people are getting significantly older and reshuffling their priorities. This is done on purpose. Remember, we are shuffling things up. Our characters are even watching some new television shows including a very woke version of Hulu’s “Handmaid’s Tale” (Nursemaid Diaries) and a very disturbing (yet culturally accurate) take on anything Tyler Perry has ever made called “Mista Griggins.”This shuffling of the narrative (and urge to kill the narrator) keeps things fresh, but the deeper storytelling that made Season 2 the original powerhouse that dove into the diversity of Black America is missing. Can we please learn more about the motivations behind Colandria’s lifestyle and perhaps dive more into the origins of Troy’s need to sleep with his professor. I said, it’s missing, but the storytelling is not forgotten. You need to watch Season 3, because it’s good. I just cant help thinking we could have done better.Moar Matt Groening! We went to the future with Futurama, the present with the Simpsons, and now let’s go back in time with Disenchantment. Let’s get this out there right off the bat. This first season is rough. There is a lot of fan service. This show gave me the giggles and warm feels with call backs to Futurama and the Simpsons. This helped make up for the weak story. The reason I wanted to recommend this is because there is a lot of promise for the next season coming out September 30th on Netflix. We follow the story of the Princess Tiabeanie “Bean,” her demon friend, Luci, and a runaway elf, Elfo. Bean just wants to get drunk, fight, and screw. She’s a Bart Simpson, but you know a woman. Unfortunately, this is the majority of the first season. This season’s arch is all about finding the elixir of life, but it’s her father’s, King Zog, story and Bean and the gang are just kinda in it. This is where the show took a left turn, but it turned it right around with the last two-three episodes. Bean’s character is forced to make hard choices for the lives of her friends and the setup for season 2 left me wanting more. The voice acting is one of my favorite parts. You’ll find lots of favorites from Eric Andre, John DiMaggio, Billy West, Nat Faxon, and Abbi Jaconson. Matt Groening and crew did an amazing job finding voice acting royalty. If you like Futurama and the Simpsons you will like this show. Keep your expectations low, this is not Matt Groening finest hour, but it’s not his worst either. Watch a few episodes you’ll end up liking it in the end.

They answer important questions like these: What would make you shit on the sidewalk? Is this movie scary? What could be worse than getting sick like that on a bus? Is Mary clairvoyant? Could you get past someone tricking you into cutting off your own arm, even if it was “for your own good?” How accurate is this abuse to the musical training? Did you like the image of them playing the cello at the end? Which example of the body horror was the MOST horrific? Was it the bugs? Why? Why should we play through the pain? What could have motivated a woman to revenge besides sexual abuse? Did you find that cause a little lacking in imagination? Did the structure of the Movements work for you? What exactly motivated those decisions? Do you like Charlotte and Lizzie? If Lizzie is coded as queer… does it have anything to do with the fact that she’s been tortured and raped? Is it implying that someone BECOMES and orientation? (In the film.) Is that what the STORY is saying? Is convincing Lizzie to cut off her hand the ONLY way to save her? What ibuprofen pills are that large? What did you think about the film angles and camerawork? What was your favorite shot in the movie? How did Jeffrey and Theus come into this job? Who invented that scary Saw rape apparatus? If you were attacking scary cello rapist man, what song would play while you dismembered and blinded him? The rest of the movie swings back and forth in time and perspective to eventually reveal Charlotte’s true motives and the audience may or may not experience whiplash. The Nun was a pretty big 2018 hit - Here is our Review https://www.horrormovietalk.com/2018/09/12/the-nun-review/ The Perfection is Not Quite My Tempo The perfection is not a great movie, but to me it is on the precipice of greatness. I wish they had committed more to some of the more ridiculous and/or tasteless elements. Parts of this even reminded of my wistful favorite, The Human Centipede. Mainly the ridiculous reveals and the mustache twirling level villain. Stephen Weber does a great job of playing the pretentious dean of the Bachoff School of Music. In an age where no one is surprised by Shyamalan-esque twists, instead of upping the ante on the world building or character development, writer/director Richard Shepard ups the ante on the number of twists! Score for The Perfection I’m giving it a 6/10 The Perfection is not without it’s charm, and it gets a B+ for effort, but overall it’s a pretty average flick. The Perfection Movie Spoilers Expand for Spoilers First of all, lets talk about the elephant in the room. The Trailer gives way too much information about the plot away. It basically undercuts the first half of the film, since you know Charlotte has nefarious motives for Lizzie from the beginning. Not to worry though, there are plenty of twists throughout! Twist #1: Charlotte Poisoned Lizzie This is the least surprising since they pretty much give it away in the trailer. The whole bugs in vomit, and bugs under the skin was a red herring. Charlotte used some of her dead mothers' medication to make Lizzie suggestible, purposely drove her to temporary insanity, and getting her to cut off her own hand. Remember The Ruins? You Should Read Our Review! https://www.horrormovietalk.com/2019/05/08/the-ruins-movie-review/ Charlotte accomplishes her purpose, because once Lizzie returns to Bachoff, she is unceremoniously kicked out of the school. Because... who has need of a one handed cellist? I guess since, the wound was self inflicted, Lizzie couldn't prosecute Charlotte, but that doesn't keep her from kicking her ass! Lizzie brings Charlotte to Anton, and soon after, the next twist is revealed. Twist #2: Bachoff is a Sex Dungeon Conservatory The namesake of the film is a certain room where Anton (Weber) touts as being accoustically perfect. As such, he demands that only perfection of anyone that plays in that room.
