Yas Rana and Phil Walker reflect on a thrilling first day in Ranchi, headlined by Joe Root's 31st Test century. Akash Deep made an immediate impression on debut, dismissing England's top three in a stunning new ball burst, before Bairstow and Stokes both fell to spin to leave England 112-5 at lunch. The afternoon belonged to Root though, who knuckled down and cleverly crafted one of the best centuries of his glittering Test career in tricky conditions.
