Did you know that 3 years ago, Los Angeles became a dystopian retrofuturistic hellscape? Well, neither did we! But this week, we review a film that takes place in this very version of Los Angeles - Namely Blade Runner! This film stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos among others. Based on Philip K. Dick's 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?', this film follows Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who is tasked with finding rogue synthetic humans (also known as Replicants) who have escaped from a space colony and returned to earth. And of all places, they go to Los Angeles. This film explores religious, existential, and humanistic themes and raises a lot of questions for the viewer. We here at BIIG Production, however, are ultimately tasked with answering the ultimate question: But... Is Blade Runner Good?If you'd like to suggest a film or film franchise, or if you'd just like to say hello, you can reach us at biigpodcast@gmail.com, @biigpodcast on Twitter, or @butisitgoodpodcast on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube! Sci-Fi July continues with a look at Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 (2017). It's the story of K (Ryan Gosling). He's a replicant experiencing memories where he thinks he's the chosen one, a product of a replicant and human pairing. Of course, that Replicant is Rachel (Sean Young) and the human is Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) which, I guess settles the whole thing about Deckard being a human or replicant... or does it? It's 2019 and we're in a technological hellscape. Overpopulated cities are made up of gargantuan structures that look both futuristic and archaic at the same time. Neon is everywhere. And replicants are running wild. Directed by Ridley Scott and based on the legendary works of Philip K. Dick, Blade Runner sees special agent Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) on a mission to hunt down a crew of rogue replicants. But as the violent androids begin to question their own existence, so does he. On this episode, we discuss Blade Runner's cult status, its signature aesthetics, style, and sound, as well as its place in the sci-fi hall of fame.
1982's Blade Runner is a cult classic in cinema. Based on a Phillip K. Dick novel, Ridley Scott's film is set in a dystopian depiction of 2019 Los Angeles, which thankfully isn't reality quite yet. A bunch of robot human-lookalikes known as replicants are set on having a friendly chat with their master. It's up to the most boring protagonist in fiction, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), to hunt them down, and maybe obtain a personality along the way. I swear we're not this biased in the discussion. I just couldn't help myself.
For the third installment of the Banter Movie Club Series, Wes and Perry are tackling Denis Villeneuve's 2017 Sci-fi Epic, Blade Runner 2049! Ryan Gosling plays a new blade runner that is working for the LAPD to "retire" old replicant models approximately 30 years after Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) goes into hiding at the end of the original movie. Along the way, he uncovers a secret that could change completely the way the world operates.
This film is the sequel to #150 on out list Blade Runner, so if you haven't seen it you may want to wait on this one. Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. His discovery leads himon a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who's been missing for 30 years. Favorite line- "Dying for the right cause is the most human thing we can do." Mystery Line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." Attention, on spoile. Beaucoup. Let us rewind once again! The year we’re going back to is 1982 – the year that Harrison Ford wasn’t doing a Star Wars or Indiana Jones movie – Blade Runner. In anticipation of the upcoming sequel Blade Runner 2049, Jason and Rob rewind to bring us a review of the Ridley Scott’s neo-noir, science fiction film. But which version you ask? Blade Runner: The Final Cut. In a slightly dystopian 2019 Los Angeles, ex-police officer Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is forced to return to his old job as a “Blade Runner” – His assignment: eliminate four escaped bioengineered Replicants. Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation where he meets Rachel (Sean Young), a Replicant girl he develops feelings for – challenging his previous views on the humanity of Replicants. In the cinematic feature that has garnered itself a cult following, we dig deep in exploring the many levels of themes (it's our most analytical podcast yet), the special effects, and standout scenes. We ask the important questions; What do the eyes mean? What’s the deal with the unicorn? And is Deckard a Replicant!? Sit back and enjoy our second episode of Rewind & Review.
Analizamos Blade Runner a nivel simbólico. This week, Zach travels to the future to see if androids dream of electric sheep, or if the dystopian future is just around the corner as he explores Ridley Scott's 1982 film, Blade Runner. BLADE RUNNER Blade Runner is a 1982 American dystopian science fiction thriller film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young and Edward James Olmos. The screenplay, written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, is loosely based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. The film depicts a dystopian Los Angeles in November 2019 in which genetically engineered organic robots called replicants—visually indistinguishable from adult humans—are manufactured by the powerful Tyrell Corporation as well as by other "mega-corporations" around the world. Their use on Earth is banned and replicants are exclusively used for dangerous, menial or leisure work on off-world colonies. Replicants who defy the ban and return to Earth are hunted down and "retired" by police special operatives known as "Blade Runners". The plot focuses on a brutal and cunning group of recently escaped replicants hiding in Los Angeles and the burnt-out expert Blade Runner, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who reluctantly agrees to take on one more assignment to hunt them down. During the show, Zach mentions a video on Vimeo.com. Here it is. During the show, Stephen mentions the book, Future Noir. The 1992 release of the "Director's Cut" only confirmed what the international film cognoscenti have know all along: Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, based on Philip K. Dick's brilliant and troubling SF novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, still rules as the most visually dense, thematically challenging, and influential SF film ever made. Future Noir is the story of that triumph. The making of Blade Runner was a seven-year odyssey that would test the stamina and the imagination of writers, producers, special effects wizards, and the most innovative art directors and set designers in the industry. A fascinating look at the ever-shifting interface between commerce and the art that is modern Hollywood, Future Noir is the intense, intimate, anything-but-glamerous inside account of how the work of SF's most uncompromising author was transformed into a critical sensation, a commercial success, and a cult classic.
