It's time to start a new monthly franchise! So why not put to the test if there really is a better love story than Twilight. In this film adaptation of the global phenomenon, Kristen Stewart embarks on an intense, angsty relationship with the enigmatic vampire Robert Pattinson. We'll explore the chemistry between the leads that has captivated and divided audiences, as well the film's impact on popular culture, and its atmospheric setting. I guess after this review all three of us have asserted ourselves as Twilight defenders. And while you may like to debate us on the strength of the story and dialogue, it is impossible to deny that vampire baseball is dope. All because Liam's poll streak cannot be stopped, this week we explore Eden (2014). In this French drama we follow the journey of Paul, a DJ (loosely based on the director's brother) who is deeply immersed in the vibrant world of the electronic dance music scene, and witness the highs and lows of his career and personal life. Over the almost 20 years the story spans, he will make music, perform at gigs, do lots of drugs, breakup with at least four girlfriends (including Greta Gerwig), and hang out with Daft Punk. Between the three of us, we found a lot to like in both the film's music and Paul's character study. Then the show will briefly transform into a spin-off podcast 'EDM Effect' as Jayden takes us through his impressive personal list of DJ recommendations. Richard Linklater returns to Cinema Effect with a bit of a departure from the Before Trilogy with his new Netflix movie, Hit Man. Starring Glen Powell as a philosophy teacher who also goes undercover for the cops as a side gig, the film sees him take on a multitude of personas in order to convince as a contract killer. But problems start to arise when he breaks protocol to let a desperate woman off the hook. While some questionable narrative choices were made, this sexy crime flick still manages to entertain throughout in large part to Powell's comedic chops, and some excitingly tense scenes. The film also claims that real hitmen don't exist, which we find hard to believe. So if you've ever hired a hitman please let us know in the comments. If you thought you didn't care about baseball, think again because 2011's Moneyball is a must-watch. This compelling sports drama is all about the true story of how the sport was revolutionised and forever changed in the early 2000's. In order to finally win the World Series on a limited budget, Mr Beane, portrayed by Brad Pitt, takes an unconventional approach to assembling a competitive baseball team. It's a great story with a fantastic screenplay and performances from its stellar cast, including Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman. This film certainly left us learning a lot about the sport, and agreeing that it is indeed hard not to be romantic about baseball. Rev up your engines for the second week in a row, as we journey back to completely deranged post-apocalyptic Straya for George Miller's long-awaited Fury Road prequel all about Furiosa. The film has been in development since before Fury Road was even filmed over a decade ago, and tells the saga of the titular character's backstory prior to her time with Tom Hardy's Mad Max. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the mantle of a young Furiosa, and does so very capably with a supporting cast lead by Chris Hemsworth playing a bogan wasteland cult leader. How entertaining we found Hemsworth's unconventional performance is just the first of many points we found disagreements with in this review. Let's return not just to the cinemaaaaa, but to a franchise we first reviewed on the show a few years back. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the latest instalment in the iconic series, and follows on from the end of Caesar's journey hundreds of years in the future. This time Wes Ball takes over the big shoes left by Matt Reeves as he tells the story of new ape characters, and explores their evolving dynamics with the last surviving humans on Earth. The film unsurprisingly features visual effects so good that you forget you're watching totally simulated environments and characters. And that illusion is only further held up by the strong performances (both motion captured and in-camera). But despite it's impressive features, we did have some differing experiences with how engaging we found this new journey. Kora and her ragtag warrior buddies must train a bunch of scrubs to defend their home against the Imperium. Part Veldt farming simulator, and part Seven Samurai in space, the movie's effective action and faster pace was mostly able to keep us entertained. Zaddy does have to overcome his own very clichƩ characters and dialogue. But at least the performances get more time to shine in Part Two's standout flashback sequences. Walkabout released in 1971, and is regarded as an incredibly influential film in the history of Australian cinema. So in watching it for the first time, we had to bring on board our trusted guest star Andy Lau, who was already a big fan of the picture. The story follows two English children, a teenage girl and her younger brother, who are stranded in the Outback after their father's traumatising death. On their journey back to civilisation, they encounter a young Aboriginal boy (played by the iconic David Gulpilil) who helps them to survive despite not being able to speak the same language. This pilgrimage through the harsh wilderness creates many opportunities to explore cultural differences, and the impact of white Australians on the land, among many other thoughtful topics. Set against the backdrop of World War II, this film beautifully balances being both a romantic period piece and a large scale war movie. It also happens to feature one of the most impressive one-take sequences ever put to screen! This is certainly one of those movies that you will view differently upon watching it again. Cinemaaaaaa is saved! Friend of the show Martin Scorsese returns with a 200 million dollar historical epic that has been universally praised up until now. The film follows what is probably the grimiest gold digger in history through Leonardo Di Caprio's Ernest Burkhart, fiending after Lily Gladstone's Molly and her oil money. The film is massive and through the central relationship examines the social politics of the Osage tribe and the ever encroaching greed of the white men. Given this, we also discuss some of our favourite movies about social injustice and how good certain 2019 films really are. Before we go all the way back to the beginning in the new prequel releasing next month, we must first bring the current Hunger Games saga to a close with the epic finale, Mockingjay Part 2. The film finally sees the sparks of revolution started by Katniss culminate in full scale war between the Districts and the Capitol. And while our main characters travel into the heart of the city in an attempt to assassinate our beloved President Snow, it becomes increasingly clear that the military tactics employed by the supposed good guys are pretty dodgy. The reality that the opposing sides really are just two sides of the same COIN is core to the story's themes, and some standout scenes and performances really drive the point home. But at the same time it's hard to deny this ending probably didn't need to be split into two parts in the first place. Then speaking of endings, after the review we'll discuss the best final movies in other franchises. With Liam away this week, there's no better time for Jayden and Zac to crash the show with way too much Star Wars talk. Ahsoka finished up its season run a couple of weeks back, and as fans of the character for over 15 years, we had to debrief and record a spiritual follow up to our Clone Wars episode released three years ago now. And now that it's over, was Ahsoka the Star Wars Rebels sequel show we've been waiting for? Is it still weird seeing these animated characters in live action? Is Thrawn too fat? And will viewers new to the story even remotely care? That's just scratching the surface of this conversation. So strap in, enjoy this (almost) entirely unedited episode, and prepare to be taken to lightspeed.... by a space whale! The Prince of Egypt is a classic 1998 DreamWorks Animation film, and acts as an adaptation of the Book of Exodus. You probably know this already, but the gist is that Moses (Val Kilmer) is tasked by God with leading and saving his fellow Israelites after learning his true identity. It's an absurdly stacked cast. Rendered in still stunning 2D animation, the film represents the end of an era for how big budget productions in the genre were made, with CGI poised to take over Hollywood in the years to follow. It also seems like a good idea to provide a warning that this episode contains some major ignorance on religion (Zac embarrassingly never learnt this stuff, please be kind to him). But then before all is said and done, we'll dive into your favourite DreamWorks movies of all-time (and inevitably conclude that Pixar is better). We hope your thoughts and prayers are with us as we endeavour to tackle our first ever quadruple feature on the show! In the past few weeks, four short films written and directed by auteur filmmaker Wes Anderson have released on Netflix. All of which are based on stories by Roald Dahl. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Poison, The Rat Catcher, and The Swan each possess strikingly similar approaches to their production and dialogue. Not to mention world class actors like Benedict Cumberbatch and Ben Kingsley playing multiple roles in multiple films! Yet each short still felt unique. Let's breakdown how, and reach a final verdict for all four films. All while embarrassingly trying to solve the complicated hidden messages of these children's stories. As we return to the world of Panem this month for the beginning of the end to The Hunger Games saga, we find it in even more of a mess than usual. Having arrived at District 13, Katniss has become the face of a revolution in open war against The Capitol. And as we discuss in this very podcast, it has become clear that the approach of the rebels is increasingly scummy. We're basically on Team Snow anyway because Donald Sutherland is the world's most charming tyrant. Regardless Mockingjay Part 1 explores this conflict, as well as the role of media in influencing public perception, rather well. But the big question remains if the decision to split this book (which is actually 10 pages shorter than Catching Fire) into two parts ultimately harms the story and leaves us with an unsatisfying first half? This week Liam and Zac venture to a far, far away land where hell smells real bad, and David Bowie himself presides as the Goblin King. This is Jim Henson's Labyrinth, a cult classic family/horror movie from 1986. Starring a young Jennifer Connelly as she traverses a fantasy land and meets a fellowship of diverse characters, the story actually does somewhat resemble the Wizard of Oz. A key difference however is the fact that the craftmanship on display is still second to none, as almost 40 years later the majority of the film's characters are brought to life through exceptional puppeteering. They each look amazing (with a special shout-out to the GOAT Ludo). But there are some weird moments for sure. So if you're just as confused about the ending of this simple kids film as we were, then definitely tune in to hear us solve the hidden themes and mysteries of the Labyrinth in real time. We're back for the second week in a row covering a Damien Chazelle joint. That's really no bother because his films are pretty damn good. But also because First Man marks a significant departure for Chazelle's filmography. The 2018 film is a biopic about Neil Armstrong and the triumphs and tribulations proceeding the Apollo launch in the 1960s. And I think it's fair to say that story wouldn't be an expected follow up from the director of Whiplash and La La Land. Ryan Gosling's lead performance, in particular contrast to his character in La La Land, sees him portraying Armstrong as a quiet man keeping a lot of his struggles bottled up. The result however is some high quality cinema, with a great score and a handful of unique and really tense space flight sequences we can't wait to breakdown. La La Land is not only one of the most popular and well regarded films of the last decade, but also marks Damien Chazelle's second go around on Cinema Effect this year (with more to come next week). Starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, the movie plays as an idealistic whimsical musical, with some strong character drama still inserted throughout. The story believe it or not takes place in Los Angeles, and fittingly contains strong themes of not giving up on one's dreams (even when you're kind of a bad actor). We'll eventually thoughtfully compare those ideas and characters journeys to Chazelle's first film, Whiplash. But first we must overcome a heated debate about an aspect of the film that ended up being quite polarising amongst the crew: the quality of the musical sequences... We're not only back on The Hunger Games train, but can happily confirm on this rewatch that the sequel, Catching Fire, is a step up from the original film in almost every way. In a plot twist genuinely shocking to some, and painfully obvious to most sane people, our protagonist Katniss (alongside her completely useless husband Peeta) must once again compete to survive in the arena. It's just that this time, their competition is comprised solely of other former victors! As silly as it may sound, the narrative unfolds in a compelling way with lots of political conflict, and does actually manage to strongly justify re-entering the games. The movie also features interesting new supporting characters, improved visuals, and an ending that will keep you on board for later entries. So let's discuss it all.
