Blade Runner takes the concept of A.I. to its logical conclusion by merging it with artificial consciousness and biology. Is this the future we're headed toward?“Wake up, time to die!”LeonWhen Ridley Scott's Blade Runner was first brought to the screen in 1982, the notion of “artificial intelligence” as we have come to know it, was a niche subject at best. If you can believe it, the idea of a personal computer in every home (never mind in your pocket) was enough of a novelty for most people that the concept of androids so lifelike that you could barely tell them apart from actual human beings felt about as far-fetched as a lightsaber or a chestburster, despite the film's low key and distinctly film noir approach to science fiction.Ah, but what a difference a couple of decades makes. Today your social media feeds are flooded with lifelike AI images of people who don't exist, swarmed with engagement by bots, depicts video of events that never took place and even music that was never composed by a human. People talk to ChatGPT when they're lonely. This week, we're taking a look at Ridley Scott's groundbreaking, visually striking 1982 movie, Blade Runner. It tells the story of a retired cop, Rick Deckerd, who happens to be a former BLADE RUNNER, a specially trained breed of cop whose sole duty is to hunt down “replicants”, artificial beings created for hard labor off-world. Replicants are not allowed back on their home planet under pain of death, and that's where Deckerd comes in, he's pulled out of retirement for the purpose of hunting down 4 of these escaped replicants who have returned to Earth to question their creator, Elden Tyrell. While investigating the Tyrell Corporation, Deckerd learns that there is a 5th replicant on Earth, Tyrell's assistant, Rachel, however, she is unaware that she is a replicant because she has been implanted with the memories of Tyrell's niece. Now Deckerd not only has the problem of hunting down the original 4 replicants, he seems to be developing feelings for Rachel who, herself, isn't human. Did you know that 3 years ago, Los Angeles became a dystopian retrofuturistic hellscape? Well, neither did we! But this week, we review a film that takes place in this very version of Los Angeles - Namely Blade Runner! This film stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos among others. Based on Philip K. Dick's 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?', this film follows Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who is tasked with finding rogue synthetic humans (also known as Replicants) who have escaped from a space colony and returned to earth. And of all places, they go to Los Angeles. This film explores religious, existential, and humanistic themes and raises a lot of questions for the viewer. Blade Runner REPLICANTS by Philip Shane, Matt Stanley, Gabrielle Paniccia

BLADE RUNNER (1982) is director Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece; a huge influence on both movies and popular culture as a whole, a nightmarish vision of the future, a triumph of world building, lighting, and sound design with still excellent looking special effects and also it's a total bore. Set in the grimy, rain-soaked streets of a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles, Harrison Ford stars as Rick Deckard, a weary ex-cop forced back into his old job as a 'Blade Runner', assigned to hunt down and 'retire' renegade androids known as replicants, including their inspirational leader, Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer). Way too slow and featuring an unconvincing love story, the amoral Deckard is a singularly uninteresting character, who manages to be completely devoid of anything approaching charisma, something of an achievement from the man who was Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Multiple cuts of the movie have ruined the ambiguity of the original theatrical release which is still the definitive version. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it.
