Indian filmmakers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh were shocked when their  scrappy, independent verite doc Writing with Fire swept up awards, including at Sundance, and became the first feature doc to ever be nominated for an Oscar. But, even more surprising was when the subjects of the film released a statement saying that the film oversimplifies their work and that it's "a much more complex story than the one going to the Oscars."In this episode, Rintu and Sushmit talk about how they were able to build trust with the film's participants and how they dealt with criticism after the film's successful release.Host Jennie Butler on InstagramExecutive Producer Sky Dylan-RobbinsProducer Amy DiGiacomo on Instagram and TwitterProducer Caley Fox Shannon on InstagramProducer Abhishyant KidangoorEditor Audrey Horowitz on InstagramGot an idea for an episode? Rintu Thomas is a documentary filmmaker, director-producer, and co-founder of Black Ticket Films. Rintu discusses the narrow margin for error women have at work–especially when they are one of few in their profession. Her documentary, ‘Writing with Fire', was the first Indian feature documentary to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Nonetheless, Rintu feels pressure to succeed to disprove the “See? I told you women can't do that” side comments that can be overheard about any profession, but especially male-dominated ones. In this conversation, she speaks with Aditi and Christina about the film, depicting female friendships on screen, and how to create more women-friendly production teams (better bathrooms!).Follow Rintu on Instagram: @rintuthomas Join the conversation: Instagram: @womeninlabourFacebook: @womeninlabourTwitter: @WILPodcastCreditsHost and Executive Producer: Christina MacGillivrayHost and Executive Producer: Aditi MittalExecutive Producer & Brand Director: Laura QuinnChief of Staff: Priya KapoorMarketing Director: Maanya SachdevaHead of Production: Mae Mariyam ThomasSenior Producer: Divita OberoiSound Supervisor: Kartik KulkarniAudio Editor & Mix Engineer: Lakshman ParsuramJunior Producer: Nikkethana Kamal Women In Labour is generously supported by a grant from the American Center, New Delhi. Right now, “Khabar Lahariya” might not be as well-known as “The New York Times”, but, with 150 million YouTube views and growing, India's only women-led news outlet has already established itself as an indispensable local watchdog and source of reporting in the country's most populated state. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, “Writing With Fire”, directed by first-time feature filmmakers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, is a fascinating and inspiring profile of Khabar Lahariya's fearless women journalists as the media outlet makes the crucial transition from print to digital.   Talking to Mike and Ken from their home in Delhi, Rintu and Sushmit delved into the making of their film and offered a fascinating, big picture look at the political forces and changing media landscape that are rapidly transforming Indian society. As members of India's Dalit (“untouchables”) caste, how have the women journalists of Khabar Lahariya overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to do their work under the most difficult, and often threatening, circumstances? What objections do they hear, even in their own homes, from husbands and parents who wish they would give up their work and restrict themselves to their traditional domestic roles? How has the rise of Prime Minister Modi tested the very fabric of India's democracy? And how is this film the filmmakers' own personal response to the changing times in their country? Recently named to the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature, “Writing With Fire” premieres on PBS' Independent Lens on March 28th.   Follow “Writing with Fire” on instagram and FaceBook writingwithfire.film.  Also music box films. Dr. Darshana Sreedhar Mini talks to Rintu Thomas & Sushmit Ghosh about WRITING WITH FIRE. Hailed as “the most inspiring journalism movie—maybe ever” by The Washington Post, this rousing documentary spotlights the only Indian newspaper run entirely by women. Founded nearly 20 years ago by a band of fearless Dalit women in rural Uttar Pradesh, the Khabar Lahariya paper has aggressively taken on India’s patriarchy and beaten the odds to have a real-world impact on local politics. But now, its reporters are facing the directive dreaded in newsrooms the world over throughout the 21st century: it’s time to “pivot to video.” As members of India’s lowest caste, many of the paper’s staff have never handled a smartphone before, and reconfiguring their reportage for YouTube is no small hurdle. But with an online presence comes a broader reach, and as their webpage’s clicks start climbing, the self-taught team behind Khabar Lahariya finds themselves taking on national issues and gaining global recognition. This real-world David and Goliath story of women standing up to speak truth to power won both an Audience Award and Special Jury Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. “A stirring and inspiring documentary about some very courageous women, who deftly articulate and defend the need for accurate, fearless journalism in the pursuit of justice” (Vox).
