Indian filmmakers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh were shocked when their scrappy, independent verite doc Writing with Fire swept up awards, including at Sundance, and became the first feature doc to ever be nominated for an Oscar. But, even more surprising was when the subjects of the film released a statement saying that the film oversimplifies their work and that it's "a much more complex story than the one going to the Oscars."In this episode, Rintu and Sushmit talk about how they were able to build trust with the film's participants and how they dealt with criticism after the film's successful release.Host Jennie Butler on InstagramExecutive Producer Sky Dylan-RobbinsProducer Amy DiGiacomo on Instagram and TwitterProducer Caley Fox Shannon on InstagramProducer Abhishyant KidangoorEditor Audrey Horowitz on InstagramGot an idea for an episode? The Kennedies were dead, Dr. King was dead, Malcolm X was dead, Woodstock was happening, and man just landed on the moon, but the story you didn't hear was about the 3rd annual Harlem Cultural Festival. After sitting in a basement for 50 years, this documentary gathers attendees and performers to reminisce about the festival and what it meant for them and their community during a time of turbulation and division in this country. Even though "Writing With Fire" did not win the award for the Best Documentary Feature at the 94th Academy Awards, India still has a reason to celebrate -- Namit Malhotra's visual effects and animation company DNEG's work for The Dune won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. This is not the company's first award. In fact, the company has six Oscar-winning films to its name and now Dune joins the list. In this podcast, Meenakshi Verma Ambwani & Chitra Narayanan speak to Namit Malhotra, Chairman and CEO of the multi-award-winning company. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/business-line/message

In India, there is just one newspaper run entirely by women, Khabar Lahirya, and it covers the region of Uttar Pradesh. The women are also Dalit, or so-called “untouchables,” a category excluded from India's caste system. This unique outlet is the subject of “Writing with Fire,” an independent Indian feature documentary. Over five years, the filmmakers followed a group of brave women journalists from marginalized communities as the newspaper transitioned from print to digital and as the reporters' challenged the structures of tradition and power in their region in India. The film is nominated for best documentary feature at this year's Academy Awards, and has won several other awards in the film festival circuit. We spoke with one of the directors of the documentary, Rintu Thomas.

Right now, “Khabar Lahariya” might not be as well-known as “The New York Times”, but, with 150 million YouTube views and growing, India's only women-led news outlet has already established itself as an indispensable local watchdog and source of reporting in the country's most populated state. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, “Writing With Fire”, directed by first-time feature filmmakers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, is a fascinating and inspiring profile of Khabar Lahariya's fearless women journalists as the media outlet makes the crucial transition from print to digital. Talking to Mike and Ken from their home in Delhi, Rintu and Sushmit delved into the making of their film and offered a fascinating, big picture look at the political forces and changing media landscape that are rapidly transforming Indian society. As members of India's Dalit (“untouchables”) caste, how have the women journalists of Khabar Lahariya overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to do their work under the most difficult, and often threatening, circumstances? What objections do they hear, even in their own homes, from husbands and parents who wish they would give up their work and restrict themselves to their traditional domestic roles? How has the rise of Prime Minister Modi tested the very fabric of India's democracy? And how is this film the filmmakers' own personal response to the changing times in their country? Recently named to the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature, “Writing With Fire” premieres on PBS' Independent Lens on March 28th. Co-directors Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh award-winning documentary WRITING WITH FIRE focuses on India's social environment built to divide based on caste and gender and a fearless group of journalists maintain India's only women-led news outlet. Amidst rising Hindu nationalism, the Dalit women of Khabar Lahariya—all from the Dalit (“untouchables” caste)—prepare to transition the newspaper from print to digital even though many of their reporters don't have access to electricity at home. Armed with smartphones, Chief Reporter Meera and her team of journalists confront some of India's biggest issues—investigating cases of caste and gender violence, police corruption, environmental injustices, and more. WRITING WITH FIRE chronicles the astonishing determination of these local reporters as they empower each other and hold those responsible for injustice to account. Reaching new audiences through their growing platform, the women of Khabar Lahariya redefine what it means to be powerful. Co-directors Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh join us for a conversation on the daily lives of these incredibly brave women, at home and on the road as journalist, gaining access and the trust of their community and how their work has served to demonstrate the power of a free press to improve lives and support a democratic society. Dr. Darshana Sreedhar Mini talks to Rintu Thomas & Sushmit Ghosh about WRITING WITH FIRE. Hailed as “the most inspiring journalism movie—maybe ever” by The Washington Post, this rousing documentary spotlights the only Indian newspaper run entirely by women. Founded nearly 20 years ago by a band of fearless Dalit women in rural Uttar Pradesh, the Khabar Lahariya paper has aggressively taken on India’s patriarchy and beaten the odds to have a real-world impact on local politics. But now, its reporters are facing the directive dreaded in newsrooms the world over throughout the 21st century: it’s time to “pivot to video.” As members of India’s lowest caste, many of the paper’s staff have never handled a smartphone before, and reconfiguring their reportage for YouTube is no small hurdle. But with an online presence comes a broader reach, and as their webpage’s clicks start climbing, the self-taught team behind Khabar Lahariya finds themselves taking on national issues and gaining global recognition. This real-world David and Goliath story of women standing up to speak truth to power won both an Audience Award and Special Jury Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. “A stirring and inspiring documentary about some very courageous women, who deftly articulate and defend the need for accurate, fearless journalism in the pursuit of justice” (Vox). Writing With Fire is a documentary that follows three journalists from Khabar Lahariya, India's only newspaper run entirely by Dalit women. We chat with directors Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Gosh about how they chose the film's main subjects, the difficulties and often dangers of following them as they cover the stories that no one else is telling, and what they've learned along the way. And we wouldn't be Bitch Talk if we didn't discuss what it was like to be a man watching these women get mansplained and treated as second class citizens. Through the power of social media and their youtube page, these women are making a difference, one story at a time. We hope you support this film, and it inspires you to realize your ability to create change.Follow Rintu Thomas on IG, and TwitterFollow Sushmit Ghosh on IG Follow them both at Black Ticket Films--Be well, stay safe, Black Lives Matter, AAPI Lives Matter, and thank you for wearing a mask. --Buy us a cup of coffee!Subscribe to our channel on YouTube for behind the scenes footage!Rate and review us wherever you listen to podcasts!Visit our website! www.bitchtalkpodcast.comFollow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.Listen every other Thursday 9:30 - 10 am on BFF.FMPOWERED BY GO-TO Productions
