“We can survive. Can we thrive? That's a different question.” — Corey NathanRobert Mueller died last week. Educated at Princeton, this Vietnam veteran won a Purple Heart and then enjoyed decades of public service under presidents of both parties. But the current president celebrated Mueller's death. Such are the vagaries of American history. In contrast, Corey Nathan — host of the Talking Politics and Religion Without Killing Each Other podcast — isn't celebrating Robert Mueller's death. Nathan is from suburban northern Los Angeles County, very much at the heart of the (mythical?) American center. We discussed whether it's possible to have a civic conversation anymore. Like so many Americans, Nathan falls back on what he calls “data.” Apparently 85% of Americans are what a recent study calls the “exhausted majority.” They see themselves as anything but extreme. All they want to do is take the kids to soccer practice, enjoy their barbecue, and talk to the neighbour without the conversation degenerating into verbal war.Nathan's own story offers hope. He grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family whose roots go back eight hundred years to what is now Chernihiv in Ukraine. In his late twenties, he became a born-again Christian. His father seriously considered sitting Shiva for him — the mourning ritual for a dead family member. But he valued his relationship with his son more than his theological convictions. Twenty-five years later, the conversations are richer than ever. If an Orthodox Jewish father and his born-again Christian son can keep talking, maybe even the current American President could sit Shiva for Robert Mueller. Five Takeaways•       85% of Americans Are the Exhausted Majority: The Hidden Tribes study by More in Common found that only 6–7% on the right and 7–8% on the left are what we'd think of as extremes. The rest — 85% — are far more nuanced in their views. They want to go to the barbecue, take the kids to soccer practice, and have a conversation with the neighbour without it turning into a war. The conflict entrepreneurs on both sides have taken all the oxygen.•       Mueller Was Everything We Say We Want in Our Kids: Purple Heart. Ivy League education. Used his degrees for public service instead of money. Served under presidents of both parties. Stayed on at the FBI after 9/11 when the country needed him. And the current president said he was glad he died.•       ICE Came to the Neighbouring Church: Nathan's pastor had to have the conversation: if ICE comes, they're welcome to worship — but here are our legal obligations. A suburban mom was shot in her front seat two months ago. Is anything visibly wrong in the American suburbs? Today, at his house, no. But these things are happening all over the country.•       His Father Almost Sat Shiva for Him: Nathan grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family. In his late twenties, he became a born-again Christian. His father seriously considered performing the mourning ritual for a living son. But he valued the relationship with his child more than his theological convictions. Twenty-five years later, the conversations are richer than ever.•       We Can Survive. Can We Thrive? Nathan's family lived in what is now Chernihiv, Ukraine, for eight hundred years. One day to the next, nothing changed — until the Cossacks burned the houses and the Bolsheviks came. Democracy isn't perfect, but it's the system that lets us thrive, not just survive. About the GuestCorey Nathan is the host and producer of Talking Politics and Religion Without Killing Each Other, a top 1% podcast. He lives in northern Los Angeles County.References:•       Talking Politics and Religion Without Killing Each Other — Nathan's podcast.•       Episode 2849: How Stories Can Save Us — Colum McCann on Narrative Four, referenced in the conversation.•       Episode 2846: How to Be Agreeably Disagreeable — Julia Minson on disagreeing better. Chicago street preachers targeted for arrest; Stephen Miller: Democrats oppose voter I.D. because they want to cheat; Elon Musk offers to pay TSA salaries as Democrat shutdown continues

It's Monday, March 23rd, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Chicago street preachers targeted for arrest According to a new lawsuit from the American Center for Law and Justice, Chicago recently detained three Christian street preachers — all of whom were “wrongfully arrested for nothing more than sharing the Gospel in public,” reports the Western Journal. The legal advocacy group said in a March 14th press release that street preacher Brett Raio was arrested and charged for sharing the gospel in Millennium Park.  Although his case was dismissed before trial — with the ACLJ showing video evidence that exonerated him — his two friends were soon arrested at the same spot. Beyond getting slapped with baseless charges, the three friends were held in jail for more than seven hours. The ACLJ said, “It is a deliberate effort to silence religious expression.” Chicago law “only requires permits for amplification” that is too loud.  But, according to the ACLJ, police are simply arresting any preacher who uses amplification at all. The Christian legal group asserted, “This has all the markings of unconstitutional targeting of preachers, displaying an unlawful anti-Christian animus.” Matthew 5:10 states, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Trump's Dept. of Homeland Security pick passes thanks to Democrat Last Thursday, a key Senate committee voted 8-7 to advance President Donald Trump's nominee to be the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, reported NBC News. The vote in the Senate Homeland Security Committee sends Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to the full Senate for consideration one day after a contentious confirmation hearing. The committee is divided between eight Republicans and seven Democrats. Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, who chairs the committee, voted against Mullin after taking him to task for “anger issues” at his hearing one day earlier. Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania broke with other Democrats to vote for Mullin, ensuring that he advanced to the Senate floor, where he needs 51 votes for confirmation. On March 5th, the president fired Kristi Noem as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Stephen Miller: Democrats oppose voter I.D. because they want to cheat Democrats continue to oppose the S.A.V.E. America Act which would require voter I.D. in all 50 states. Listen to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. SCHUMER: “The core of the bill is handing the voter rolls over to DHS, putting them through an algorithm that knocks, supposedly knocks out illegal immigrants from voting.” In an interview with Stephen Miller, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff, on Fox News Channel, Sean Hannity said this. HANNITY: “Seventy-one percent of Democrats believe [in] proof of citizenship, voter ID, so we can have election integrity and confidence in results. They, [the Democrats], don't want it. Why?” MILLER: “Well, we know why they don't want to, Sean, is because they want to cheat. That is the bottom of this whole entire thing. “When you have overwhelming super majorities of all races, all political parties, all ages, all demographics, all political ideologies of the voting public, who want voter ID, who want proof of citizenship, but you have the elected Democrat Party, the Democrat officials, in the House, in the Senate, at the state level, fighting, with every ounce of strength they have, to block voter ID, to block proof of citizenship, there is one and only one reason. And that is to enable cheating.” Miller revealed that the hostility of Democratic politicians to fair elections is even more demonstrable than that. MILLER: “Here's something, Sean, that your audience may not know. At the beginning of this administration, we asked every state, red and blue, to share with us their voter rolls, so that we could scrub it against the DHS file of illegal aliens to remove illegal aliens from their voter rolls. “Every blue state refused. California refused. Minnesota refused. New York refused. “In fact, they sued us to stop us from removing illegal aliens from the voter rolls, removing non-citizens from the voter rolls. “That's not just the only thing. They don't want to get dead people off the rolls. They don't want to get felons off the rolls. They don't want to get out-of-state voters off the rolls. They don't want to get double and triple voters out of the count because they want the fraud.” Proverbs 10:9 says, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.” Republicans could lose mid-term elections on economy Pollster Scott Rasmussen warned last Wednesday that if economic confidence remains at its current levels, the Republican Party may be on track for a shellacking in November's midterm elections, reports the Western Journal. Rasmussen, widely considered Republican-leaning, said that the GOP would lose control of both chambers of Congress if voters' pessimism about their personal finances does not improve, adding that “the window is rapidly closing” for mitigation. The pollster also emphasized that much of this low economic confidence is due to how President Donald Trump's war in Iran is causing fuel prices to skyrocket. Former FBI Director Robert Mueller died at 81 Last Friday night, former FBI Director Robert Mueller died at the age of 81, reports NewsNation.com. According to the Associated Press, he led the FBI for 12 years, serving under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Mueller later served as Special Counsel for the Department of Justice, investigating alleged ties between Russia and President Trump's 2016 campaign. His 448‑page report, released in April 2019, did not find President Trump guilty of anything which is why President Trump always said … TRUMP: “This is a pure and simple witch hunt.” Mueller's family told The New York Times he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2021. Elon Musk offers to pay TSA salaries as Democrat shutdown continues And finally, Tech billionaire Elon Musk is offering to personally cover the salaries of TSA workers as the Democrat-driven shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security drags on and punishes everyday Americans, reports Big League Politics. The partial shutdown, triggered by Senate Democrats on February 14, has now stretched beyond a month as the minority party pushes sweeping immigration demands that would effectively cripple deportations of illegal aliens. Despite U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection already being funded through 2029, Democrats chose to defund broader DHS operations, throwing critical agencies into disarray. The fallout has been immediate and severe. More than 400 TSA agents have already quit. Hundreds more are scrambling to find second jobs just to survive as paychecks stop coming. Meanwhile, roughly 50,000 TSA officers—classified as “essential”—are still showing up to work every day without pay, forced to wait on backpay while politicians play games in Washington. The result? Massive airport delays, growing security concerns, and frustration boiling over nationwide. Enter Elon Musk. Taking to X on Saturday, Musk made a headline-grabbing offer. He wrote, “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.” And, according to the New York Times, President Trump issued a threat to deploy ICE agents in an apparent attempt to force Democrats to approve a new budget for the Department of Homeland Security. From the January 29th, 2026, Rumble live stream.New York Times bestselling author Charles Goyette says that the Deep State, the executive arm of Global American Military Empire, has been gaslighting the people into one phony war after another... Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine... for far too long. In his book Empire of Lies: Fragments from the Memory Hole, Goyette delivers a take-no-prisoners account of personalities and political deceit, false flags and fake news, coups and Cold Wars, and inconceivable blunders. Going beyond policy, revealing the dark role a strange psychological malady, COMBAT ENVY, plays in the lies warmongering public figures tell. Charles Goyette joins me to discuss the dark truths revealed in Empire of Lies.George Soros is 96 years old, but the damage he has done to America and around the world is guaranteed to continue through the organizations he built and through his placing his son, Alexander, in control of those organizations to keep them on the course he has set. As if leftist, progressive indoctrination in America's academic institutions weren't a big enough problem, (Soros realized a very long time ago that "commendering" education is possibly the single most effective tool to use when fundumentally changing a nation), the Open Society Foundations and Bard College pressers announced today that Bard College succeeded matching "a $500 million commitment from Open Society by raising an additional $500 million from other donors, securing a $1 billion endowment to support the college's undergraduate and graduate programs, faculty, student scholarships, the arts, and international engagement." (Bard College in upstate New York has campuses in New York City, Boston, California, Germany, and Russia; Al-Quds University in the West Bank; Arizona State University; the American University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan; and BRAC University in Bangladesh, while also funding many other academic institutions.) Soros created the OSUN, a "new kind of global educational network," to serve as a global indoctrination organ for training and fighting against "climate change" — which at that time was the left's hottest crusade; today, it's "anti-ICE" and censorship — and proliferating teaching "against nationalism," along with supporting other opportune themes that advance his progressive-left diversionist agenda.  All of this is under the guise of Soros's distorted "Open Society" doctrine.  Soros established the OSUN to guarantee that radical socialist political activism endures and spreads after he's gone. Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld, the Founder and President of the New York-based American Center for Democracy and the Economic Warfare Institute, and author of multiple articles, academic and policy papers, and five books, including The Soros Agenda, joins me to discuss how this will allow for the Soros legacy of destruction of liberty to continue long after he is gone.Charles GoyetteEmpire of Lies: Fragments from the Memory HoleDr. Rachel EhrenfeldThe Soros AgendaBecome a supporter of Tapp into the Truth: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tapp-into-the-truth--556114/support Tapp into the Truth on Rumble. Nitrous oxide or laughing gas as been used as a recreational and medical drug since the late 1700s. Dentists often use it as an anaesthetic. It's been linked to hippie, festival and rave culture for decades. And in the last few years, American rappers like Kanye West, Young Thug and Gunna have been open about using it. You might have seen the little metal cannisters, that people use to dispense the drug, littering the streets. But now, manufacturers of nitrous oxide are producing bigger cannisters with different flavours and bright packaging and in the US, they are being stocked in smoke and vape shops. Experts say this is contributing to a rise in the drug's misuse. Using nitrous oxide can have harmful effects. Inhalation of nitrous oxide can lead to hypoxia, where the brain does not get enough oxygen. This can result in death. Regular inhalation can also lead to a Vitamin B12 deficiency which can cause nerve damage, degradation of the spinal column and even paralysis. The number of deaths attributed to nitrous oxide poisonings rose by more than 110% between 2019 and 2023, according to the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In this episode BBC journalist Eve Webster explains how the use of nitrous oxide has changed recently, especially in the US. We hear about the risks of using it and where bans are in place. Ezra Marcus, an American investigative journalist, tells us how nitrous has become so popular in the US since the pandemic - and its links to American rappers. And BBC journalist Chigozie Ohaka sets out the current situation with nitrous oxide in Nigeria, where authorities tried to clamp down on it in 2023. The Journey Beyond Death – Part 11 opens our seven-part Near Death Experiences series with a powerful collection of firsthand journeys beyond the veil. These stories are not hearsay — they come from individuals who were clinically dead, crossed into another realm, and returned to transform the way we understand life, death, and what lies beyond. Leading NDE researcher Dr. Jeffrey Long, who has documented over 4,000 near-death experiences, shares stunning evidence that consciousness survives death. His research challenges the limitations of mainstream science and reveals consistent themes: overwhelming love, divine light, and a reality more vivid than this world. He recounts cases including a woman born blind who "saw" during her NDE, providing undeniable proof that our perception transcends the physical body. NDE survivor Peter Anthony, known as "The Accidental Prophet," describes traveling through a tunnel of rotating mathematical codes and faces from past lives, gaining profound downloads of universal knowledge. Bev Brodsky recounts meeting an angelic guide and merging with an all-knowing light — realizing that all souls are connected, and that love is the foundation of all existence. Finally, Betty J. Eadie, celebrated author of Embraced by the Light, shares her extraordinary encounter with Jesus and the heavenly realms. She describes a soul journey filled with infinite love, deep remembrance, and sacred revelations about why we incarnate on Earth. Betty's testimony stands as one of the most detailed and comforting maps of the afterlife ever shared, offering hope and clarity to anyone seeking to understand what truly happens after death. This episode challenges conventional thinking and invites listeners to step beyond fear — to embrace the reality that death is not an end, but a magnificent homecoming to unconditional love. ----------------------------- Featuring in order of appearance 01:00 – NDE Leading Researcher Dr. Jeffrey Long 28:06 - NDE Survivor Peter Anthony 39:27 – NDE Survivor Bev Brodsky 45:07 – NDE Survivor Betty Eadie ----------------------------- Dr. Jeffrey Long – Radiation Oncologist & NDE Researcher Dr. Jeffrey Long is a radiation oncologist and a leading authority on near-death experiences (NDEs). It's Monday, December 2nd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Mexican Baptists displaced again Do you remember the story about a group of 151 Christians, including over seventy children and babies, from the Great Commission Baptist Church in southern Mexico's Hidalgo state? They had been forced out of their villages in April 2024 because of their religious beliefs. Then, they were later permitted to return home. Well, on November 21st the Baptists have been displaced again because local authorities reneged on an agreement allowing them to move back into their homes, reports Church in Chains. Village authorities had forced the Baptists out of the neighboring villages by cutting off electricity and water, vandalizing their church building, and blocking access to some of their homes. The group lived in very difficult circumstances until state and municipal officials brokered an agreement in September between village authorities and the Baptists, allowing them to return home. Electricity and water were reconnected, they were promised state aid if needed, and village authorities agreed to uphold freedom of religion or belief for all. Sadly, village authorities reneged on the agreement. The Baptists are living in tents while they wait to receive government aid. British Parliament votes for pro-euthanasia bill The British Parliament has voted in favor of a bill permitting doctors to help patients kill themselves, reports LifeSiteNews.com. In a 330-275 vote, they advanced the highly controversial assisted dying legislation, so-called “Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill” that allows doctors to euthanize their patients under certain conditions. Kamala Harris' self-congratulatory phone call with donors and activists Appearing on News Nation, Lindy Li, who served on the Harris National Finance Committee, complained about an oddly self-congratulatory 25-minute phone call with Kamala Harris. LI: “She actually held two calls, one for her top donors and one for grassroots. I was speaking and texting with fellow attendees of the call, and we were amazed by how self congratulatory the tone was. The call was about 20-30 minutes. “I don't recall anyone taking responsibility for the fact that we spent about $2 billion across the super PAC and the campaign, and came up so significantly short.  We lost seven swing states.” When asked to provide more detail on the self-congratulatory tone, Li said this. LI: “They praised Harris as a visionary leader. I believe at one moment during the call she was talking about her Thanksgiving recipe. I think I was stunned to hear that, given just the extent and brutality of the loss, and the fact that DNC staffers, at least two-thirds, have been fired summarily. And a lot of them are at a loss as to what to do. “I'm just frankly stunned that there was no sort of postmortem or an analysis of how we can do better, what sort of lessons were learned. It was really just patting each other on the back, congratulating each other on, I'm not sure what, and saying we'll see you for Christmas.” 2024 presidential news coverage most tilted to Democrat nominee ever The 2024 presidential campaign made history in at least one humiliating respect: Broadcast evening news coverage of the candidates was the most wildly imbalanced in history.  It favored Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris over former Republican President Donald Trump by the greatest margin ever recorded, reports NewsBusters.org. The final Media Research Center study, released on October 28th, showed evaluative coverage of Harris — excluding “horse race” assessments — on ABC, CBS and NBC was 78% positive vs. 22% negative. For Trump, those numbers were flipped: just 15% positive press vs. 85% negative coverage. Subtracting Trump's positive press from Harris's positive press, the advantage to the Democratic nominee was 63 points, the greatest in the modern media age. Kay Jewelers fires Christian associate over affirmation of Biblical sexuality Mika Cohen was fired from her position as Assistant Manager for Kay Jewelers in Fairlawn, Ohio, for sharing her Christian beliefs with a co-worker after repeatedly being asked to do so, reports the American Center for Law and Justice which is representing the Christian. While working at Kay Jewelers in June 2023, Ms. Cohen's co-worker repeatedly pressed her to articulate her view on homosexual Pride Month.  While Cohen initially chose not to answer the pointed question, she finally shared her opinion in the employee lunch room, affirming  God's definition of marriage and sexuality.   Proverbs 28:1 says, “The righteous are as bold as a lion.” Despite the fact that there was no quarrel or hostility, Cohen was shocked a few weeks later when an HR investigator at Kay Jewelers informed her that allegations regarding inappropriate discussions of religion at work had been filed against her. Later, a Kay Jewelers manager told Cohen that she had been fired for “talking about God at work.”  She was asked to pack up her things and leave. Christian talk show host Todd Starnes said, “It certainly appears as though Cohen is the victim of a setup by a pro-LGBT staffer. To make matters even worse, it appears as though Kay Jewelers is anti-Christian. Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but Kay Jewelers is certainly no friend to Christians.” Kirk Cameron reinvents kids' TV with Biblical values And finally, Kirk Cameron and Brave Books have launched a new venture into children's entertainment, a show the "Growing Pains" actor hopes becomes a significant, Bible-based player in the battle for children's hearts and minds, reports The Christian Post. Cameron hopes the new series called "Adventures with Iggy and Mr. Kirk"  will fill a critical void in children's programming as it blends moral lessons with family-friendly adventures. The series will be available to stream for free on Brave Books' YouTube channel in early 2025. The "Left Behind" star said that he's heard repeatedly from parents that they are "tired of all the indoctrination and the subverting of good, wholesome family values we're seeing from Disney and Nickelodeon." Cameron added, "We want to be one of the tools in their toolbox to help reinforce the lessons that they're already teaching at home, lessons about forgiveness, about the value of all life, pre-born life, disabled life and elderly life. We want to teach kids about courage, about the importance of family and teamwork, and facing your fears." The series follows a puppet named Iggy, a green Iguana, and his mentor, Mr. Kirk (played by Cameron), on adventures that teach Biblical values through engaging storytelling. With a production team featuring veterans from "VeggieTales" and "The Muppets," along with former Disney star Leigh-Allyn Baker, the show aims to rival the quality of mainstream entertainment while offering a distinctly Christian-based perspective. Luke 18:16 says, “Let the children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, December 2nd, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. They discuss his background - being raised in Providence, Rhode Island and tracing his ancestor's journey to America from Cape Verde. How he discovered his love for making art at a young age and how his mother and father encouraged his interests. How he cultivated his artistic abilities. How he began his studies as a Political Science Major… to converting to art — studying painting at Southern Illinois University, where he was a graduate assistant to Allan Kaprow and eventually received an M.F.A. from CalArts. Having a video studio in New York. A conscientious objector of the Vietnam war… being jailed for draft evasion… and how all of these experiences have shaped his life. The artists that have inspired him and the many exciting adventures he has had - while traveling widely in Europe, Africa, China and the Middle East during the 1970s and 1980s. Documenting the end of Portugal's colonial rule in Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. They discuss how his work has evolved through the years… being known as “The Grandfather Video" — to his passion for painting which is now his primary medium. Why he left the United States to now — living in the South of France and the exciting projects he has in store..! Guest Bio: Performance and media artist Anthony Ramos was among the earliest video artists to use the medium as a tool for mass media critiques and cultural documentation, and to examine media presentations of "truth." In his powerful but rarely seen video works of the 1970s, Ramos sought to combine art and activism, giving agency to marginalized individuals and communities. In his earliest black-and-white video pieces, Ramos engaged in forceful, direct performances for the camera, often using physical endurance and actions to confront political issues.Ramos has traveled widely in Europe, Africa, China and the Middle East. He videotaped the end of Portugal's colonial rule of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, Teheran during the 1980 hostage crisis, and Beijing just prior to the Tiananmen Square massacre. Ramos produced a number of video works that critique the media through deconstruction and appropriation, and explore the relation of mass cultural imagery, African-American identity, and the politics of race in America. In the late 1980s he turned to painting as his primary medium.Ramos was born in 1944 in Providence, Rhode Island. He received an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts, where he was assistant to Allan Kaprow. Among his awards are a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship. In the 1970s Ramos was a video consultant for the United Nations and the National Council of Churches. In the 1980s, he lived in Paris where he was a Professor at the American Center, and oversaw the television cabling of ten blocks of Paris for the first time. Character, Policy, and Christian Principles for Voting, with David French

When it comes to voting, how should we balance character and policy? “If I'm voting for a politician,” journalist David French suggests, “I have a test. One is: Do they have the character necessary for the job? And the higher the position they're seeking, the more character that is necessary. And number two: Do they broadly agree with me on the most important policies?” In this episode, Mark Labberton welcomes journalist David French (opinion columnist for the New York Times; formerly The Atlantic, The Dispatch, and National Review) for a discussion of character, policy, and principles for faithful, virtuous engagement in polarized American politics. French's commitment to Christian faith, moral character, and reasoned policy has emerged from his experience as a former commercial lawyer, military lawyer, and former president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. A political conservative, French has throughout his career been an advocate for First Amendment rights, pro-life individuals and organizations, and the ideals of democracy. He describes himself as “an evangelical conservative who believes strongly in a classical liberal, pluralistic vision of American democracy.” Together, Mark and David discuss his Christian upbringing; his personal partisan commitments; the importance of character in party politics; the importance of nuanced and reasoned policy; why he's voting for Kamala Harris in order to save conservative politics; two Bible verses for this election season; how to respond to our culture of fear; and how to secure a more courageous, loving, and humble politics. About David French David French is an opinion columnist for the New York Times, and previously wrote for The Atlantic, The Dispatch, and National Review. He is a New York Times bestselling author of Divided We Fall: America's Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation. He describes himself as “an evangelical conservative who believes strongly in a classical liberal, pluralistic vision of American democracy.” He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, the past president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, and a former lecturer at Cornell Law School. He has served as a senior counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice and the Alliance Defending Freedom. David is a former major in the United States Army Reserve. In 2007, he deployed to Iraq, serving in Diyala Province as Squadron Judge Advocate for the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Show Notes Divided We Fall: America's Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation “I was a First Amendment litigator with a writing hobby.” Background in the Acapella Churches of Christ: a Restoration Movement from the early-19th century “It turned into something kind of separatist, sectarian, and ferociously legalistic.” “I grew up with a real grounding. grounding and reading the Bible, which actually, ironically enough, was the seed of me leaving the church of Christ.” “I was a Cold War conservative and a conservative Christian. And they were related, but not, but they weren't inextricably tied together. So for me, my, you know, ideology was downstream of my faith, but I didn't think that my ideology was the inevitable result of my faith.” Pro-Life Activism Representing pro-life individuals Existential clash: the confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States Why David French is voting for Kamala Harris in order to save conservative politics “My party loyalty has always been related to two things. One is the ideology of the party and the other one is the character of the party. And the party leaders and the people that I vote for, I've always had a character test and an ideological test.” Bad character and bad policy—”why would I be attached to that? There's no claim on my loyalty there.” The importance of character “If the conservative perspective that I have wants to have any purchase in American politics, MAGA has to lose. Donald Trump has to lose.” Federalism: a practical understanding that smaller government is better. Republican Party increasingly embracing a pro-choice platform “If you're going to have a healthy two party system, the distinctions should be around good people of high character approaching policy solutions from different perspectives.” “One of these parties has sort of left the norms of American. political engagement.” “I voted for Mitt Romney more than Mitt Romney's probably voted for Mitt Romney.” “If I'm voting for a politician, I have a test. One is: Do they have the character necessary for the job? And the higher the position they're seeking, the more character that is necessary. And number two: Do they broadly agree with me on the most important policies?” “I have very little patience for those people who say I'm somehow not a Christian for voting for a pro-choice candidate. When they're voting for a pro-choice candidate who's been adjudicated a sex abuser, that is difficult for me to discern how that is a more Christian stance.” Clear, independent thinker Logical reasoning and courageous statements A living faith by which we think through ideas “There's a fine line between stubbornness and courage.” “In these last 10 years, I've really had to ask myself: Who are you really?” David French's parents' example of faith and virtue Learning from World War I and World War II history “Some of the worst things that have happened in American history have happened because people didn't want to do hard things.” “I think the sanctification process, though, is difficult. It means that you're being exposed to constantly your own sin is being exposed to yourself.” Mark asks: “What do you want Christian people, thoughtful, committed, curious, uncertain, tenuous Christian people to, to do between now and the election?” 2 Timothy 1:7—“God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of sound mind.” Micah 6:8—”What does the Lord require of you, O man? What is good? To act justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly before the Lord your God.” Ideological diversity: be curious, seek disagreement “If you just show affection for people and curiosity towards their views, anger tends to drain out of a room.” “College students are full of anxiety about conflict.” “Fear not.” The A Team—arming up for battle “And they find out that a lot of these folks that they were taught were going to be their enemies are actually just super kind, normal folks.” “They're equipping them to fight, not to love their neighbor, fight their neighbor, not love their neighbor.” Mark asks: “What handles would you give people in living in a fear dominated moment in American history?” “In receiving anger and fear, do not try to build up a bulletproof thick skin. … Because you know what that does? It often walls you off from legitimate criticism.” Thick skin, soft heart. “An enormous amount of fear is rooted in a sense—a feeling—of non-belonging and loneliness. Isolation and loneliness.” “People who are more isolated and alone are drawn to these authoritarian movements.” “Ease the loneliness, build the connection. … Lean into relationship and presence.” “It was just stunning to me that, against all evidence of scripture, Christians were consigning people to eternal damnation over a vote in a presidential election.” Miles Law: “Where we stand is based on where we sit.” Kindness, humility, not living a fear-based angry life “If you're in a community where the fruit of the spirit dominate, you can withstand a lot of disagreement.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.
