#75: How to Embrace Mindfulness in Your Marketing, with Sarah DeGeorge

Today’s guest is Sarah DeGeorge, a digital marketing specialist who lives in Philadelphia. Sarah works in paid and organic marketing, public relations, and social media marketing and management. She helps small- to mid-size businesses find their authentic voice for their audience.   Sarah started freelancing as a freelance writer while still in college. As she was nearing graduation, she got sick and had trouble doing in-person job interviews, so she turned to freelancing as she started to feel better. She slowly built up her business and learned new skills. Freelancing allowed her to deal with her illness (she feels great today) at the time, which would have been more difficult with a regular 9-5 employee job.   Sarah recommends we consider “mindfulness in marketing” as we look to grow our freelance businesses. She points out that a lot of marketing looks at past performance or future plans—but not the present time. Being mindful means being in the present. So, consider how your marketing is working and how you feel about your marketing right now in the present. (You can use this same idea with your clients when you work on marketing-related projects with them.)   Sarah breaks mindfulness marketing into three pillars:   Start with yourself: What are your mission and values? How is your marketing plan working right now? How are you feeling about these efforts?   Now, consider your customer base. What marketing materials and efforts do they expect from you (certain social media interactions, live video, weekly newsletter)? What is resonating with them? What is not resonating with them?   Finally, look at the data. This could include your website’s Google analytics and Facebook insights. (This could also include client feedback and previous successes.) Connect this with yourself—are you enjoying working on a specific social media platform? Maybe the data shows that you’re not as engaged with a particular platform; maybe you could phase out that particular effort.   This type of analysis will help you figure out what marketing efforts you may need to stop, cut back on or ramp up and what new things you could try.   Sarah came up with the mindfulness in marketing concept during a serious period of burnout. We need to take that moment to check in with ourselves and not just go full-speed ahead all the time.   You do not have to be on all the social media platforms. Focus on what you like and where your clients are. If those two things don’t overlap, perhaps hire a virtual assistant to help you market on a platform where your clients are but that you don’t enjoy as much and aren’t as good at because of that.   Once you’ve analyzed those three pillars and connected the dots of what is and isn’t working, brainstorm how you can make the efforts that are working more robust. Consider how you can pivot and migrate certain efforts, such as changing from a blog to a video, moving from Facebook to Instagram.   Video can be a fun new marketing trend to try out. It doesn’t have to be your own face on video. You can create a short instructional video with slides, based on a blog that you already wrote, and post that on YouTube. YouTube is more of a search engine than a social media platform. Trying something new will require a lot of courage as there’s a good chance you won’t get it right the first time. Mastering a new skill, a new habit, what have you will require that you leave the safety of your comfort zone and be open to learning something new. If you’re courageous and try something new, you’re going to learn that valuable lesson you’re supposed to learn, succeed or fail, swim or sink. If you learn in the process you need to pivot and change course, that’s okay because you’ve learned that valuable lesson along the way. That’s interesting because back in Episode 59 social media expert Sarah DeGeorge echoes when she talks about how to take a step back from your business and rebrand, get back on the bandwagon and put yourself out there again. The biggest takeaway from these conversations is, despite having a successful career, if there are other areas of your life that need attention, such as your health, it’s okay to take a step back and refocus your efforts.  But don’t give up entirely, because if you do believe in your work, you should keep going because it is such a gift to the world and that persistence can help others who may feel doubt, who may not be as courageous, and who could use the lessons learned in their own growth. An example of this is with my conversations with married couple author Jennifer Miller and Entrepreneur Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Jason Pfifer. They discuss book and magazine publishing and the importance of not only producing great work but standing up for it. Every new year brings great beginnings! While I’m not a big fan of resolutions or “new year, new you” themes, I’m a fan of shorter-term goals. I’m part of several mastermind and business strategy groups and we tend to follow a 12-week year model. Parkinson’s Law states that work expands to the time allotted, so rather than keep goals at an arbitrary time length with vague goals that is the typical full year, why not work in shorter sprints to get what you need done? In other words, we do our quarterly goals as though they were full years in order to get the most done in less time. The 12-week year is a productivity system created by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington in their book The 12 Week Year, where you, as the subtitle of the book states “get more done in 12 weeks than others do in 12 months." So it’s funny, in some ways our “new year” starts every quarter and we’re constantly setting new goals every 12 weeks. And what an opportunity for the changeup! Which is why I’m excited about our next guest. I had the opportunity to meet Sarah DeGeorge at the BlogConnect event in Philadelphia. Sarah is one of those people who you could sit down with a cup of coffee and have an authentic conversation with and easily lose track of time. I think the biggest takeaway from this conversation was, despite having a successful career, if there are other areas of your life that need attention, such as your health, it’s okay to take a step back and refocus your efforts. Without further ado, let’s get into the conversation.                 Podcasting is a lot of fun! You get to meet really awesome people and get to provide your audience with super useful content that can help them achieve their dreams. While it is fun, some also use podcasting as a business that brings in a full-time income. Imagine if you could make a full-time income just by interviewing one person each week or just doing a solo show. This is a vision that can turn into reality. But only with the right knowledge. We are thrilled to share the second half of Cynthia’s two-part interview with digital marketer and entrepreneur Sarah DeGeorge! Cynthia's key moments and takeaways from the interview were: You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of everyone else It’s ok to be vulnerable ask others for help and support when you need it. Don’t let pride stop you from reaching out. It’s important not to compare yourself to other people’s highlight reels on social media. SO many people struggle with that. It just makes you feel bad, and it’s not a fair comparison. When Sarah’s dad got a serious diagnosis, she felt internal pressure to maybe work too hard, and she ended up feeling a lot of burnout. It’s good for freelancers to avoid doing work outside of set work hours. Sarah ended up taking her work emails off of her phone so that her time off would actually be restful. We are happy to share the first half of this two-part interview with digital marketer and entrepreneur Sarah DeGeorge. Sarah talks about the unusual path she took after college and why she continues to have resolve in taking that path. We're in the middle of our Philadelphia bloggers series. You like the side of that, Sarah, don't you? Yeah, right with me is Sarah DeGeorge of the Socially Dedicated blog. How’d I do? Sarah DeGeorge: Good. Great. Made it sound better than I ever do. So that's what counts. Anthony Verna: Wonderful. Wonderful. So, Sarah, let's start here. Tell us about your blog and what you do. Sarah DeGeorge: So my blog is kind of an extension of my career, so I freelance and socially dedicated. It came from both my initials are SD and I do social media marketing. Anthony Verna: That’s very handy. Sarah DeGeorge: Yeah, I know, right? There was, there was a plan to incorporate a logo when I finally put it together and have my signature being the SD part of the logo. But that's a completely different story. But anyways, my freelancing is like I said, then carried over to my blog because I wanted to be able to kind of talk about it, and a lot of people that are bloggers tend to, and, I see a lot of them, they are freelancing on the side more so with content creation because of their writing and everything like that. So, it was kind of like a three-sided venture because it's it's a portfolio page, it's a blog itself, , I put it as like a business front too. So, it shows the services that I do alongside the information that I put out with the blog. So that's kind of how I positioned the website itself. Whole package kind of. Anthony Verna: Yeah, I understand. I understand that completely. So, when I look at your blog, I see topics like best business practice of being yourself, freelance truly isn't free, staying on top of client's money habits. Are these topics that you draw from your experiences in work? Sarah DeGeorge: Yeah, I'd say so. Sometimes something might happen and instead of me being grumpy and spiteful and being all you know, write a blog to inform others about the situation and how to do it in a way where you have your freelancing career and your reputation behind you and it's good, everything like that. Like sometimes it is inspired by my own personal experiences in a way that I can almost, it's a teachable lesson. Oh, unfortunately I have to go through said lesson, but I'd like to help other people not have to go through it. Yeah, Basically I think most of it is kind of like personal experience. Some of it is just I see something, or something sparks my interest. Maybe nothing happened personally to me, but I'm like, hmm. Like that's something we should talk about. And I tried to put my own spin on it. I'm still young so I'm, I'd like to say I'm kind of in like that mid-level part right now. I'm no longer, I
