Recorded live at a recent Cleared Job Fair, this recruiter roundtable discussion features Robin Wallace with IBM, Ray Ryan with General Dynamics Electric Boat, and Sarah Knapp with TechFlow. Moderated by veteran and former recruiter, Bob Wheeler, the panel talks about the best way to follow-up with recruiters, provides some interesting resume tips, whether cover letters matter, and more. “You see it every day, the person that just applied for 15 jobs but qualifies for two. All you're doing is wasting time. As an applicant, really if you're not hitting that required field, don't bother applying for it. Make sure that you hit those requirements. Most of the time you want a lot of those preferreds, and make sure that it's highlighted on your resume.”Find show notes and additional links at: https://clearedjobs.net/cleared-job-search-tips-from-ibm-general-dynamics-and-techflow/

Sarah Knapp is a musician, healer, and traveler who moved home to San Diego three years ago to care for her father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. In caring for him and others at the end of their life, she uses music therapy and an innate love of elder wisdom to bring exquisite calm and peace. “No matter how disoriented he is, music always works. When I put on his favorite songs, he relaxes. He feels safe; he becomes present.” Sarah founded the San Diego chapter of the Resistance Revival Chorus and the community gathering place One House Community Center. She holds regular community events including Death Cafe and trauma informed yoga. In this conversation we talk about her dad’s return to his divine boyhood, the exquisite beauty of the dying process, grief ceremonies, the medicine of Gaia’s playground, and what she’s learned about how to live. “So many people move to New York or another city, and then realize they need the outdoors.” - Sarah Knapp Looking for a way to get in touch with nature, yet feel stuck in a big city? Often times people move to large metropolitan areas to advance their careers or find more opportunities. When they get there they quickly discover that they need nature. We all used to play outdoors as kids, and that instinct doesn’t leave us when we become adults. Sarah Knapp joins us today to discuss her creation: OutdoorFest. This organization holds events all year long for people just like you. She helps bring the community closer together while getting in touch with nature. These amazing events are a great way to find a lifelong adventure buddy, and if you haven’t been to one you’re really missing out on a life long experience. Download this episode to hear exactly what OutdoorFest is about, how it got started, and where Sarah sees it going in the future. Bulletpoints OutdoorFest was created by Sarah Knapp for people who live in cities to find ways to connect with the outdoors. Designed to help people connect and find life long adventure buddies. Knapp puts together events all throughout the year to help clean water and nature in the New York area. Most people start outdoorsy as kids and lose it as they get older. Outdoorfest creates the largest outdoor camp site in New York. People are surprised to find Queens has mountain biking trails. Meeting people in nature and going on hikes can create stronger bonds than you can find in the city. It’s not just about being outdoorsy, it’s also thinking of your impact on the world. They are trying to remove barriers and make things more accessible. People move to New York and realize they really need a natural experience, and shouldn’t feel like they have to leave New York to experience it. New York is seeing a huge growth in outdoor activities. Everything is better outside. Striking out on your own means a whole lot of hustling. We interview Sarah Knapp, the founder of OutdoorFest and Mappy Hour about how she got started, how she finds time, and how she's learning to appreciate an accomplishment before moving onto her next goal. After graduating from NYU, Sarah applied to work at a ski resort in Alta, Utah. She wanted to immerse herself in the 'ski bum' lifestyle and surround herself with people who were as into skiing as herself. Sarah found herself at home in the outdoor community, and brought the drive to share that feeling with others back to New York. Learn about how Sarah started OutdoorFest, a 10 day outdoor adventure festival in New York City and Mappy Hour, a growing happy hour for urban outdoorists. The opening story in this podcast was contributed by Sara Aranda, founder of Bivy Tales. Special thanks to Sara for her openness and vulnerability in sharing her experiences with anxiety.
