People of a certain age likely have a vessel of pictures. To be clear, I'm not talking about a well curated photo album. For me, the vessel is a cheap plastic bin, about 8” W x 15” L x 4” D. Full of pictures. Many of them loosely organized in the original paper envelopes that they gave me at Target or Walmart or the drug store where the film was processed. Many of them are labeled: Summer 2005, Christmas 2003, Nela Baby Photos, STL trip 2004, etc. It's not a great organization system, but its full of serendipity. If there is any thought of hunting through them for a picture, I might as well go through the entire bin. Probably over a thousand photos piled high. A few often slip to the floor as I reach for them.Recently, I read the book “American Gods” by Neil Gaiman. The small g variety. It's a roadtrip romp through the Midwest. The main character is a recently released prisoner who, unbeknownst to him, makes a deal to be the bodyguard of the Norse god, Odin. It's a fun book. Emotive at times. I really liked the main character's love for his wife, who died days before he is released from prison and haunts him (in a good way) through the rest of the book. At the climax, there is a showdown between the old gods, mostly immigrants from ancient lands who couldn't quite make it in America and the new American gods (think Santa Claus), who capture our imagination and usurp our more deeply held spiritual wishes in accordance with cultural convenience. It is the kind of book that makes me ask questions like, “Does Jesus actually stack up to Santa Claus most Decembers?” and “What do Americans worship without knowing they are doing so?”The site of the book's final battle is Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, TN. In real American history, the mountain has special significance as a sacred site of native American culture, an important Civil War strategic location, and - in contemporary times - as a tourist destination known for its extravagant gnome displays. It now captures people's interest with the unique style of advertising that you see painted on old barns on rural highways: “You're Almost There - Lookout Mountain!” You might call it a tourist trap. The author calls it a “thin place” where the geography, topography, and natural beauty of the place have attracted millions of people for many reasons over the centuries. In the author's world, a thin place is a location where gods gather because it is where people have historically gathered. These places hold significance that is mutable, where a constant battle for meaning shapes peoples' perceptions and experiences. Is the mountain a site of worship, military strategy, or commercialism? It can be all of these things and more. Ultimately, that meaning does not have to be culturally defined. It can be highly individualized and your own belief significantly influences the experience. In my own belief system, I worship a God who created the earth as a bountiful garden for all to share. This belief often leads me to natural areas in honor of the sublime beauty that no human hand will ever be able to create. In the Cherokee language, Chattanooga is translated as “rock coming to a point” or “end of the mountain.” On top of Lookout Mountain, as modern tourism marketing goes, you can see seven states. It is a visionary place. I wonder, before there were states, how did Indigenous people describe what could be seen from that point? On what occasions did people gather at the “end of the mountain?”In summer of 2007, I was preparing to go to graduate school to get an MBA from Indiana University. This was a major life altering moment for me. The week before school started, I went with my wife and two young children to Athens, GA to visit family. On the way back, we stopped in Chattanooga. At the hotel, I distinctly remember my fearless 18 month old son taking a dive into the water at the kiddie pool and my daughter being enthralled by the massive miniature train exhibit.

It was once famously said that “life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” And that is certainly true regarding how the “Great Shutdown” era impacted American society. But while much of that story is still being written several years later…we can be quite confident that the way people approach their personal health (and wellness) will never quite be the same again. As an example, occasion-based vitamins and supplements thrived as consumers invested in certain condition-specific products seen as more beneficial when battling against “Great Shutdown” paradigm shifts. And arguably the most prominent activity that year involved immune health…with the Nutrition Business Journal reporting a retail sales spike of over 70% YoY in 2020, as “cold, flu, and immunity” supplements experienced something like $2 billion in additional categorical demand. But after that skyrocketing commercial activity, the “cold, flu, and immunity” VMS category has experienced several years straight of consistent mid-single-digits YoY retail sales decline. Additionally, household penetration for immunity-related VMS products have dropped by over five percentage points since 2020. So then…should we assume that immune health is no longer a high priority for consumers? Not exactly…as it seems even despite that decline in commercial activity, various consumer surveys throughout 2024 have noted immune health remains an important motivating factor for supplement use. Moreover, survey findings show that a quarter of U.S. consumers are increasing their use of supplements to boost immunity…with approximately 1 in 6 regularly taking an immune health supplement. So, what's going on within the immunity-related CPG space? Are the last several years of negative categorical growth indicative of its outlook? Or is the future ripe with market opportunities? My latest first principles thinking content will explore those questions by first examining a few underlying drivers of demand like around the implications of consumers understanding that immunity needs are multidimensional and making it a constant year-long health condition pursuit...along with how “fear” influenced the purchasing of immunity-related CPG products in 2020. And since we're talking about consumer packaged goods…I'll briefly explaining where I see the “product” opportunities emerging within the “immune health” space. Also, I'll detail an often-overlooked strategic element when it comes to the immunity-related CPG market, that too many companies focus on the dry product benefits when the opportunity is really in emotive storytelling that makes offerings more relatable and tangible. Let's just start this with a confession. I'm deeply in love with photography. And this love affair started young, as a kid growing up in a small regional town in Victoria. I used to pour over the pictures in the National Geographic—those photos were my window to the wider world. They showed me the power of a single image to connect people across cultures, continents and time.My fascination with images grew after my grandparents lost everything, photo albums included, in the Ash Wednesday bushfire. It was such a huge loss, and growing up without access to those family stories made me realise how important photography is to engage us with our history. Since then, I've felt a deep responsibility to document our stories so nothing is forgotten. This eventually led me to found Lauren Murphy Photography in 2013 while also working as the staff photographer at the Warragul and Drouin Gazette. Eight years later, it's a busy photography studio specialising in compelling, authentic portrait and documentary-style imagery for people and brands across Melbourne, the Gippsland and Warragul region, and beyond. While I've had a camera attached to my hip in some form or another since high school, I also credit my time as a social worker supporting the refugee community for five years (along with my full-time role as a mother) for informing the way I approach my photography clients every day—with compassion, empathy and a desire for honest connection. It matters to me that people feel truly themselves in their photos—empowered, confident and ready to tell their story. This pushes me to understand the real person, find the beauty in them and share it with the world. And what a gift that is! The first day I launched my business it was vital for me to have my values ingrained in what I do. I will always welcome people of any age, gender, sexual identity, and cultural background. Our world is made beautiful by diversity, the more we can embrace it the better.I also wish to acknowledge the current Elders in my local community and thank them for being able to follow my dreams on the tribal lands of the Bratowoloong people. I pay my respects to their Elders both past and present and look forward to potential collaborations with the Kurnai community.

Jolene came across a post on Reddit of a new GM asked a question about how emotionally invested other GMs are in their creations for their games. From NPCs, to actual towns and villages do GMs care about Towns and it's inhabitants. Saul and Jolene discuss how those people who are younger and newer to RPGs can have a different view of how to play an RPG than older gamers. Viewing actual plays of RPGs have had large impact in new people coming to the RPG hobby. Not only that they have come into the hobby with a different perspectives than old gamers that came from the War Game or Miniatures Hobby. Saul and Jolene discuss how it is important that players have investment in the game and in their characters to give a better RPG experience at the table. Those games are more fun, have a deeper impact on the players, create lasting memories and overall increase the enjoyment of the RPG session or campaign.

Alternative rock musician David Raybuck released a powerful new single, "He Knows YourName," on November 1, 2023. This spiritually charged song offers solace and hope to those grapplingwith the weight of suicidal thoughts. "He Knows Your Name" is not just a song; it's a lifeline, a messageof love, and a reminder of the intrinsic worth every individual possesses.Inspired by the profound words of Psalm 139, which declare that we are wonderfully made and knownby God, this song encourages listeners to call on God for salvation and freedom from hopelessness. In aworld where far too many people believe they are a worthless and meaningless accident, DavidRaybuck offers a compelling counter-narrative found in scripture: that God is the one who createdyou, and he did not make a mistake by doing so.“He Knows Your Name” is the latest example of David Raybuck's unconventional use ofsecular-sounding music with lyrics that point people to God. Emotive melodies are woven togetherwith styles reminiscent of influential artists like Ryan Adams, Coldplay, and Tom Petty to create anexperience that is both catchy and unique. "I am very excited about this song because I believe God isgoing to use it to save lives, both physically and spiritually," says David Raybuck.(Check into the other songs David is releasing throughout the months in 2024. Check on Spotify or SoundCloud) David Raybuck David Raybuck is the prodigal singer-songwriter of spiritual alt-rock for music freaks, and he is on amission to help people encounter their Creator through music. With far too much generic and darkmusic in the world, David wants to reach the ears of music lovers who are stirred by original songs withundeniable beauty and creativity. He draws from the influences of incredible artists like Radiohead,The Beatles, Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ween, Led Zeppelin, Elliot Smith, Supergrass, Air,Failure and many others to create music that is catchy yet unique, with flavorings of alternative rock, folk, grunge, & Americana that sound nothing like what people would expect from “Christian music”.While David is relatively new to the independent music scene at the age of 42, he has been writingmusic since his teenage years. In his youth, his musical efforts were selfishly motivated and led himdown a destructive path. But after rejecting Christianity for most of his life, David realized the error ofhis ways in his early 30s and is now dedicated to serving God and sharing his life-changing messagewith others.David lives with his wife Lindsay near Cleburne, Texas just south of Fort Worth, and he is a father ofseven children, pastor at a local church, and professional computer nerd. In the limited amount oftime these roles have spared him, he has continued to write a lot of music over the years, and now it isfinally time to spread it. David produced his debut 14-song album, The Prodigal, in his modest homestudio in 2022. Showbiz Now Magazine called it “one of the most idiosyncratic songwritingcollections released in recent memory as well as one of the finest gospel-themed albums in thelast quarter century.” David is currently working on his second album and is committed to releasingmuch more work in the future by drawing from new inspiration and over two decades of unfinished material.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DavidRaybuckMusicianInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/david.raybuck/YouTube:: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9TnXx2Vx6OOCRnjccARp1A
Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis: Psychologist, Writer, and adjunct Professor of Psychology at Columbia University joins us today, and explains her husband's and her groundbreaking work "Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy" or REBT. Heather Grossman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-F joins host Sara MacIntyre to discuss Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and Stuttering. Heather shares how her interest and passion for REBT initially developed, then walks listeners through the underlying rationale, concepts, and principles of REBT. She proceeds to share specific insights into how to incorporate REBT within stuttering therapy, sharing clinical examples throughout. Resources mentioned:Virtual Learning by Stuttering Foundation Webinar and now CEU opportunity, 'Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy for Stuttering'ISAD Paper from 2016, 'Holistic Approach to Stuttering Using Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy''Bouncing Back from Microaggressions' PaperHeather Grossman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-F is the Director of the American Institute for Stuttering and has worked with individuals who stutter for over 30 years. She has taught stuttering at numerous universities and is an extremely active member of the stuttering self-help community. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), as elucidated by its founder, Dr. Albert Ellis, is more than a therapeutic technique; it's a philosophy for living. Dr. Ellis, a trailblazer in the field, introduced REBT well ahead of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), laying the groundwork for Aaron Beck, CBT's originator, with whom he shared a professional relationship. Having Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis, the late-Dr. Albert Ellis' esteemed wife and a dedicated practitioner of REBT, join us was enlightening. Her role as an adjunct professor at Columbia University and her therapeutic practice embody the essence of REBT. Central to REBT is the identification and challenging of irrational thoughts that lead to emotional imbalance. In a world brimming with stressors and irrationality, mastering REBT's techniques equips us to navigate life more effectively and healthily. Tune in to my conversation with Dr. Joffe Ellis to discover why REBT is a pivotal tool for cognitive and emotional regulation, essential for anyone's mental arsenal.

SMART Recovery is based on cognitive tools rooted in addressing how we think and react to life circumstances. For therapist Bruce Burleson, combining the cognitive aspects of behavior management with staying present in the moment is a recipe for successful treatment of addictions and compulsive behaviors. He calls his approach Mindfulness-Based Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, and he authored a workbook all about it. Burleson has worked in a variety of mental health and recovery settings in the course of his more than 25 years in the field. In this podcast he explains how he helps clients address their issues and chart their own path to recovery.

Emotive automotive brands like Ferrari, Lotus, Bugatti, or Porsche would not exude the charisma that they do without a magical place to call home. For generations, eager customers have strolled through the simple, yet dramatic red brick archway at Maranello to collect their new Ferrari. In the Norfolk countryside, Lotus engineers complete endless laps of the company's Hethel test track. Thus, ensuring the firm's cars still boast unparalleled driving dynamics. For nearly sixty years, Weissach has played an integral role to Porsche's success on the racetrack and in the showroom. Furthermore, the memories created during these six decades command a deserving role in Porsche folklore. Since Porsche's relocation to the Stuttgart area from Gmund in Austria, testing and development had mostly taken place at Malmsheim airfield. However, with the firm growing quickly and the introduction of the 911 imminent, a more purpose-built facility was required. Initially, Dr Ferry Porsche acquired a 103-acre plot in a triangular area between the villages of Weissach, Flacht and Monsheim. Little did Dr Porsche know, this humble site would grow into a pillar of Porsche's engineering prowess.

A bill that would ban the sale of kangaroo parts has been introduced in the US state of Oregon, taking aim at sports apparel manufacturers that use the animal's leather to make their products. But Australian industry and conservation experts say the bill is “driven by emotive misinformation,” and is “backed by people who are not qualified to comment”.The Australian government has also defended the industry as “sustainable and humane”.Football boots – known as soccer cleats in the US – are one of the only products made from kangaroo leather that are routinely sold in Oregon, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported . The measure would impact Nike, which is based in Oregon and the state's largest employer.Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople
