I think it is fair to say that Mark Dowie's latest book is unlike any other he's written. Brief and intensely personal, Mark writes about his experience with Judith Tannenbaum, poet and friend-of-a-friend who suffers from a debilitating yet often invisible illness with severe pain. Mark becomes a guide, dear friend and “amateur doula” for her as they share conversations and thoughts as she lives her final months. In this episode, he and I discuss Death Cafes, the Final Exit Network, Compassion and Choices, and of course the book, Judith Letting Go: Six Months in the World's Smallest Death Cafe.

Death Cafe: https://www.facebook.com/groups/5485969404747083/

I knew I had to do something unique for this Halloween, and when I heard about Death Cafes, my interest was peaked. I don't know if it's just part of growing older or my life experiences, but death is something I think about often. Not in a morbid way, well, maybe to some. But why don't we talk about it more. Is it because of the extreme emotions that come along with it? Is it because we don't talk about it enough, it becomes uncomfortable? I sat down with Lacy from The Art of Dying Fort Worth and we dove right in. The concept of a Death Cafe is genius to me. And you can all put December 14th on the calendar if you're interested in attending one. I really don't want to give much away here because this was such and interesting episode that flew by. I had many questions, and still have more and am curious to hear yours as well. Lacy and her business partner Taylor will be coming back in the new year to answer more questions and really deep dive into why a death doula has become a career path for many. Or more so a calling. Death maybe an uncomfortable conversation, but if the world has told us anything in the past few years especially…it's something we need to be thinking about.

Every autumn people dress up as ghosts and goblins. Some people observe All Saints Day and All Souls Day. It all originated in a Celtic tradition called Samhain and the belief that spirits walk the earth. There is an adult conversation to be had about death, the afterlife, and all the issues that go with these topics. All around the world, there are meetings called Death Cafes (DeathCafe.com). Adults of all ages get together to say out loud the questions they've had about death. It's a sharing of ideas about a subject that most people just aren't willing to speak openly about. In this episode, Anne-Marie Brandt and Tyler Myers discuss Death Cafe, unique traditions around death, and what they see when people plan for their own deaths. After all, the Stoic philosophers reminded us: Memento Mori -- "Remember that you will die." Thinking about death can lead to significant changes in how you live every day.

Would you visit a Death Cafe? Would you join a Coffin Club? Why the sudden positive twist on what is typically so morbid? What's so great about death? (Cursed Cars and Haunted Hoopties) *** Airline pilots in the UK are reporting strange objects in the sky. Not just one pilot, but several. And not just one UFO, but many. And the sightings were close. Very close. So close that they are being described as “near misses”. (Airliners Almost Crash Into UFOs) *** In today's world, parents often worry about whether their kids are eating healthy and getting a good education, and in the case of long car trips, whether the children have their phones fully charged.

This was a planned discussion with Michael Hebb Author of Let's Talk about Death (over Dinner): An Invitation and Guide to Life's Most Important Conversation and Co-Founder of Death Over Dinner  Death Over Dinner has been one of the most effective end-of-life awareness campaigns to date; and has provided the framework and inspiration for more than a million dinners focused on having these end-of-life conversations. Unfortunately Michael had a last minute emergency that prevented him attending (he is excited about scheduling a follow up). This discussion was led by Steve Gurney of the Positive Aging Community.  Steve shared the steps he took to host a Let's Have Dinner and Talk About Death Dinner Party.  Steve walked through the steps of signing up, inviting guests and the prompts and conversations he used at the dinner.   As a special bonus Jason Popko, who hosts regular Death Cafe's in Berkley, CA shared information about the Death Cafe Movement and how his meetings help stimulate conservations on the end of life topic. She holds a MA in Transpersonal Psychology and has trained with Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés in Archetypal and Cross-Cultural Psychology, and with Dr. Gabor Maté in Compassionate Inquiry. We discuss the emerging role of the death doula and the overarching attitude towards death in Western culture. We consider how people come to work with a death doula, what may happen during the death transition and how preparing well for death actually enriches life. We also discuss how a person's beliefs might inform their relationship to death and the knowing that guides the facilitation of transition. Wilka invites us to broaden our relationship to transitions, and emphasises living fully and dying gracefully. She explains how death is happening at many levels, much of the time, and how grief can be dealt with wisely. We also discuss death denial, how dreams inform life, altered states, and the possibilities for integrating Curanderismo, Tibetan Buddhism and other approaches to the death process. Ultimately, Wilka provides us with an expansive and integrative view of what a death doula is and can be.Wilka is president of the Elisabeth Kübler-Ross Foundation branch in Central Mexico, deputy director of education of EKR Foundation Global, end-of-life doula educator and advisor of the International End of Life Doula Association, curriculum coordinator for the International Study of the Institute for the Study of Birth, Breath and Death, and Advisory Council member of Beautiful Dying Expo. A few reasons why we work with the reality and gift of death, so we can LIVE a more conscious and sweeter life.

When I'm in charge, that'll be different.

Today's episode of the podcast is an important one. I sat down with my friend, Yoga Teacher and Death Doula, Brie Huling to talk about death and how it can actually be quite beautiful. I tell her, as we're chatting, "when I think of you, I fondly think of death" - and I meant it! There's a lot about death in mainstream culture that gets in our way. First and foremost, the taboo around even talking about it. So, I'd encourage you to suspend whatever thoughts and feelings you might be having right now and join the conversation with an open mind. Then, ask yourself: What would it be like to plan for a beautiful death (whether that's for you or in supporting someone else)? As an added bonus, Brie says, "in centering around death, we get to really anchor into the beauty of living." And, who doesn't want that? Let's normalize the not-knowing and discomfort, let's change how we think about and view death. This conversation is step one. I hope you'll join us! ----- Learn more about Brie and her work by connecting on Instagram (@bumblebriezer) or visiting www.yogawithbriezer.com. In this episode I talk about the fact that accepting our mortality is one of the keys to spiritual growth because we need to get beyond ego, which fears death above all else. In fact I always remind myself and you at the end of each episode to "face your fear" and today I'll share some practical ideas about how to confront your own fear of death and work toward acceptance. To work on your fear try these 6 practices: Think about death daily. Read my book The Tao of Death. https://amzn.to/3zEBLzU Journal about death, your fears and past experiences. Read about death. “CLOSE ENCOUNTER ON POT MOUNTAIN” and More Terrifying True Paranormal Stories! #WeirdDarknessIN THIS EPISODE: Have you heard of the “Death Positive” movement? Would you visit a Death Cafe? Would you join a Coffin Club? Why the sudden positive twist on what is typically so morbid? What's so great about death? (Discourse At The Death Diner) *** When it comes to homes, the ghosts go bump in the night. When it comes to automobiles, do they go honk in the night? (Cursed Cars and Haunted Hoopties) *** Airline pilots in the UK are reporting strange objects in the sky. Not just one pilot, but several. And not just one UFO, but many. And the sightings were close. Very close. So close that they are being described as “near misses”. (Airliners Almost Crash Into UFOs) *** In today's world, parents often worry about whether their kids are eating healthy and getting a good education, and in the case of long car trips, whether the children have their phones fully charged. It's tough being a modern parent, but at least you don't have to worry like Europeans did about your spawn being snatched by fairies. (Child Snatching Fairies) *** Two men go out for a weekend of elk hunting – and come back with the story of a creature so strange they don't know what to call it. (Close Encounter at Pot Mountain) *** At a downtown Chicago church, people are turning up in droves – not for the preaching or the powerful worship band – but to see a painting of the Virgin Mary, crying real tears. Rhiannon Jenkins is an actor, an improviser, a singer, a facilitator, a teacher, and a director. During lockdown, Rhiannon directed The Love Circle, Loose Seuss, and Between the Lines at the Hideout Theatre, and continues to teach online. She performed in Scene and Unseen by Across the Pond as part of The World of Improv, with Eggplant Improv at District Queer Comedy Festival, in A Culinary Journey at The Nursery Theatre, and in A Holly Jolly Journey for The Hideout Theatre. Rhiannon recently performed and taught several workshops at the Boom Chicago comedy festival. She has also recently performed at Vancouver Improv Festival and at ImprovFest Ireland. She hosts a virtual Death Cafe for Performers, and recently completed Level One End of Life Doula Training with Doulagivers. She will be attending SWIMP and Improfest Sweden as a teacher and performer, with Living. Dying. Dead.In our conversation, Rhiannon and I talked for a long time about all the things she thought she should do before finally realizing that she wanted to be part of the theatrical world. She shares quite a few wild adventure stories along this journey. She tells me the wonderful tale of how she stumbled into musical theater by accident. Kismet. We talk about how Rhiannon is working toward a move to the US. She spoke to me from San Francisco where she had recently been roped into giving a speech at a women's rights protest. Her improv skills came in handy at that moment for sure. We talk about building community and doing improv as outreach. Rhiannon is a caring and empathetic person and the improv world is lucky to have her wherever she lives. We had a great time talking and I definitely could have talked to her for many more hours!Support Rhiannon Jenkins by taking one of her upcoming workshops – online or in person!
