Mrs. Hewitt, the Assistant Head of School at Claritas Classical Christian Academy, looks at the lost virtue of disciplining the memory as part of cultivating the soul. Taking inspiration from St. Augustin, Mrs. Hewitt shows the need isn't just for the verse here and there, but for long sections of literature and poetry.

We're back and we have a doctor's note for our absence. So let's continue our Beast Mode series by exploring the ultimate game of cat and mouse with Namco's Mappy! Why did Pastblaster just pick up two new meowkies of his own? What ever happened to Micro Machines icon, Motormouth John? How did a Journey discussion make its way into this episode? What free games did Jarrod just score from a local laundromat? The listener questions this week are some thinkers: what new Marvel and Capcom characters would we place in a Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 remake, and what is our favorite year for arcade releases? Want us to answer your question in a future episode? Join the Podouken Discord and ask away: discord.gg/k5vf2Jz

Grazie e buon ascolto! On the other side of the world, where the sun shines hotter than here, and where the trees are a hundred feet tall, there is a country called Happyland. As you might very well expect everybody who lives in Happyland is as happy as the day is long. Wherever you go you see smiling faces all round. It's such a happy place that even the flowers seem to smile in Happyland. And, as well as all the animals in Happyland are happy as well. If you're never seen a mouse smile, or a cat, or a dog, or even a worm – go to Happyland! This is a story about someone who lived there who happened to be called Mr Happy. Mr Happy was fat and round, and happy! He lived in a small cottage beside a lake at the foot of a mountain and close to a wood in Happyland. One day, while Mr Happy was out walking through the tall trees in those woods near his home, he came across something which was really rather extraordinary. There in the trunk of one of the very tall trees was a door. Not a very large door, but nevertheless a door. Certainly a door. A small, narrow, yellow door. Definitely a door! “I wonder who lives here?” thought Mr Happy to himself, and he turned the handle of that small, narrow, yellow door. The door wasn't locked and it swung open quite easily. Just inside the small, narrow, yellow door was a small, narrow, winding staircase, leading downwards. Mr Happy squeezed his rather large body through the rather thin doorway and began to walk down the stairs. The stairs went round and round and down and down and round and down and down and round. Eventually, after a long time, Mr Happy reached the bottom of the staircase. He looked around and saw, there in front of him, another small, narrow door. But this one was red. Mr Mappy knocked at the door. “Who's there?” said a voice. A sad, squeaky sort of voice. “Who's there?” Mr Happy pushed open the red door slowly, and there, sitting on a stool, was somebody who looked exactly like Mr Happy, except that he didn't look happy at all. In fact he looked downright miserable. “Hello,” said Mr Happy. “I'm Mr Happy.” “Oh, you are indeed,” sniffed the person who looked like Mr Happy but wasn't. “Well, my name is Mr Miserable, and I'm the most miserable person in the world.” “Why are you so miserable?” asked Mr Happy. “Because I am,” replied Mr Miserable. “How would you like to be happy like me?” asked Mr Happy. “I'd give anything to be happy,” said Mr Miserable. “But I'm so miserable I don't think I could ever be happy,” he added miserably. Mr Happy made up his mind quickly. “Follow me,” he said. “Where to?” asked Mr Miserable. “Don't argue,” said Mr Happy, and he went through the small, narrow, red door. Mr Miserable hesitated, and then followers. Up and up the winding staircase they went. Up and up and round and round and up and round and round and up until they came out into the wood. “Follow me,” said Mr Happy again, and they both set off through the wood back to Mr Happy's cottage. Mr Miserable stayed in Mr Happy's cottage for quite some time. And during that time the most remarkable thing happened. Because he was living in Happyland Mr Miserable ever so slowly stopped being miserable and started to be happy. His mouth stopped turning down at the corners. And ever so slowly it started turning up at the corners. And eventually Mr Miserable did something that he'd never done in the whole of his life. He smiled! And he chuckled, which turned into a giggle, which became a laugh. A big booming hearty huge giant large enormous laugh. And Mr Happy was so surprised that he started to laugh as well. And both of them laughed and laughed. They laughed until their sides hurt and their eyes watered. Mr Miserable and Mr Happy laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed. They went outside and still they laughed. And because they were laughing so much everybody who saw them started laughing as well.
This week, we talk about letting people enjoy things and not being a judgmental jerk just because people do things differently from you. On this all new episode of the Retroist Podcast, I talk about the arcade classic, Mappy. This often overlooked game should be in everyone's top 10. Hopefully I can persuade you to try it.

1984 comes to an end for the Famicom with a trio of releases that American fans will recognize from the Black Box launch era of the NES. Arriving singly in 1984 rather than en masse a year or two later amidst dozens of other games with a similar visual vibe, benighted NES releases Urban Champion and Clu Clu Land stand up a bit better here. (Excitebike, of course, rules no matter what the context.) Also this episode, Namco's Mappy brings the company's most uninspired mascot of the early ’80s to Famicom in another respectable home adaptation that flatters the Famicom hardware when held up against contemporary conversions. And that's it for Nintendo and Sega's ’84 offerings! When NES Works Gaiden resumes later this year, we'll be in the heady days of 1985. Video Works is a patron-funded project. In Episode 14 I talk about Mappy. One of the many things you’ll learn about Mappy is that there are two Easter Eggs in the game.
Did you know that a lot of Namco games like Galaga, Mr. Driller and Ace Combat 3 share the same universe? Sounds crazy, but there is a link that bonds these and other 27 classic games together, and this link is the UGSF (United Galaxy Space Force)! In celebration of the UGSF Series' 10th Anniversary, the Namco Club proudly presents the UGSF Chronicles, a series where we play and tell the story of all the games included in this epic timeline, starting with Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere (PSOne, 1999), a game with a deep plot and high production values that were restricted to the japanese audiences due to severe cuts in the international releases. _______________________________________ UGSF official website: https://ugsf-series.com/en Project Nemo website: https://projectnemo.net/ WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE NAMCO CLUB?

Modération : Marion Armengod (Studio de production Make Some Noise). Prises de son : Sami Bouvet. Montage et mixage : Romain Debrie.
On this episode, Melissa talks with fellow New Yorker, Sarah Knapp, founder of OutdoorFest and Mappy Hour about how she turned her love for the outdoors into a thriving community of fellow city dweller adventure types. Over the last 5 years, Mappy Hour has grown from one chapter in NYC to 15 across North America. While walking (in the rain) at the campground home base for OutdoorFest 2019, an annual 10-day celebration of outdoor activities in and around NYC, they talk about what it's like to facilitate others in getting outside and the importance of access to outdoor spaces for all.Do you live in the city and love the outdoors? Looking for some like-minded buds to adventure with? If so, check out Mappy Hour to see if there’s a chapter near you!(Originally recorded in May, 2019)

Josh sits down with OutdoorFest founder Sarah Knapp. Sarah was a woman of two worlds before starting OutdoorFest and Mappy Hour. Having lived in both NYC and Utah, her passion for the culture of the city and love and need for the outdoors created the spark to start something to help city dwellers break out of their urban cage. In this episode of the ReddyYeti Podcast Sarah walks us through how she went from pursuing a career in academia to venturing off and finding the road less travelled by creating OutdoorFest and Mappy Hour. Join us as we gain a little more insight on the good, the bad, and the glory of starting and planning outdoor events from the ground up.
