Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke Tuesday afternoon with Washington signee Sav'ell Smalls for the first time a while, and a LOT has changed. For the freshman outside linebacker, it's still all about doing his schoolwork despite obviously not being at school. Everything is done via Zoom conferencing nowadays, and Smalls talked about the tricky nature of trying to keep on top of everything when his schedule can literally change from day-to-day. Grinolds asked Sav'ell about his beginnings as a football player, when he first started playing, the decision to attend Kennedy Catholic to start his high school career, his move to Garfield, and then the move back to Kennedy for his senior season. They also talked about the people that were part of Sav'ell's circle at Kennedy, including head coach Sheldon Cross. Washington was the first team to offer Sav'ell, and it happened right before they were set to play Alabama in the CFB Semifinal. They talked about the moment he got the offer, and what it meant going forward. They also talked about the importance of social media and Sav'ell's take on what it all means, not just in general, but also within the recruiting process. Twitter can be a rough place, and Smalls was candid in his assessment of how he felt about comments that were made to him in the middle of his recruitment, especially when he was thinking about leaving the area to play. Smalls then outlined the events that took place in the process that eventually saw him change his mind and view UW in a different light. And, as you'll find out, sometimes those events aren't really events at all but can be simple, little things that turn into something more profound. Grinolds and Smalls went into Sav'ell's decision to commit to Washington, the first person he told, and his version of how events unfolded during his Under Armour All-America jersey unveil at Kennedy, the ceremony where he also revealed his decision to become a Dawg. Then they spoke about how Sav'ell's life has changed since the decision to stay home and also his take when Chris Petersen decided to step down and how important it was to him that Jimmy Lake was the man tasked with taking over the UW program. Lastly, Smalls gave a scouting report on some of his Kennedy teammates, including 2021 UW quarterback commit Sam Huard, as well as issued a special challenge to top prospect J.T. An eventful — and successful — weekend it was for the Huskies and the Seahawks. First, the Huskies got a major commitment Friday from 5-star outside linebacker Sav'ell Smalls, keeping home one of the nation's top recruits in the Class of 2020. Then, UW went out and shut down another Air Raid offense when USC visited Husky Stadium. Mike Vorel (3:40) checks in with Adam Jude to break down the Huskies' big weekend. And Bob Condotta (20:02) checks in from Arizona after the Seahawks' bounce-back victory over the Cardinals, setting the stage for a pivotal NFC West showdown Thursday against the Rams.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, Scott Eklund, and George Johnson - were joined post-game by the man who was Tony Casticone's sidekick on radio Saturday, UW legendary running back Greg Lewis. If there was ever a guy to talk to about big wins over USC in Husky Stadium, it's Lewis. He was UW's running back that rolled through the Trojans during the 1990 'All I Saw Was Purple' game. The Huskies won that day 31-0, and while today's game wasn't quite as dominant, Lewis is always happy to talk about a UW win over the Trojans in Seattle. He talked about what went well, and we also got a chance to talk to him about some of the local high school talent that he's kept his eye on lately, including recent 2020 OLB 5-star commit Sav'ell Smalls. After they let Greg take off, the rest of the Dawgman crew dissected the good, bad, and ugly from the game, and if you're of the Purple and Gold persuasion, the vast majority of it was good. They talked about the way Washington was able to scheme out USC's talented receiver trio and force the Trojans to beat them on the ground with long drives. They also talked at length about the 14-point swing in the middle of the third quarter that really turned the momentum of the game fully in Washington's favor. Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds was at Kennedy Catholic High School Friday when Sav'ell Smalls was presented with his game jersey for the 2020 Under Armour All-American game, which will be held in Orlando, Florida on January 2nd, 2020. But Smalls had some other news to share too. He verbally committed to Washington over his other five finalists: Oregon, Florida State, Washington State, Tennessee, and Alabama. The 5-star outside linebacker came full-circle in his recruitment. Washington was the first to offer him nearly three years ago, but when he cut down his list in the spring Washington wasn't on it. But the Huskies gave him some space, let him work things out, answered questions, and by the fall they were once again in the front of his mind. Smalls broke down the reasons for the timing of his decision, what the rationale was for picking the hometown school, whether or not he'll sign in December, his relationship with Kennedy quarterback Sam Huard (a 2021 UW verbal commit) and a whole lot more. "All my life I rep Seattle," Smalls said, responding to a question from the media. "I've repped it to the extreme. I've always said it's the best city in the world. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - got together during Day One of The Crawsover, the pro-am summer league hosted by Jamal Crawford at Seattle Pacific University, to catch up on a very busy week at the University of Washington. On Tuesday the media got a sneak peek of UW's new adidas football uniforms, so there was plenty to talk about there.
