South Bend Cubs Fall to River Bandits Despite Rojas’ Spark and Defensive Highlights Davenport, IA — South Bend Cubs starter Brooks Caple made his Midwest League debut Tuesday night against the Quad Cities River Bandits, but a rocky middle stretch spoiled the outing. Caple allowed 8 runs over 3.2 innings—though only 5 were earned—giving up 1 in the second, 3 in the third, and 4 more in the fourth before being lifted. Left-hander Chase Watkins entered in the fourth and provided much-needed stability, recording the final out of the inning and tossing two scoreless frames to keep the Cubs within striking distance. On offense, Jefferson Rojas delivered the night’s biggest spark, lining back-to-back triples in the third and fifth innings. Reginald Preciado added a solo home run in the sixth to bring the Cubs within five at 8–3. Reivaj Garcia chipped in with two hits and an RBI, while Ivan Brethowr shined in the field, making a pair of standout defensive plays in consecutive innings. South Bend briefly held two leads early, but the River Bandits took control with a big push in the middle innings. Quad Cities out-hit the Cubs 11–8 and capitalized on key chances to seal a 10–4 win. With the loss, the Cubs drop another on the road in Iowa, despite promising individual performances from their young core.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's pretty common to hear copywriters recommend that you study old sales pages and even sales emails, but what about old magazine ads? The kind that are printed on paper in actual periodicals? Today, where so much advertising happens online or in your social media feed, Ad writing is a bit of a lost art form. But that doesn't mean we can't learn from it. In the 435th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, I interviewed Lewis Folkard who breaks down old ads for his newsletter readers. And he shared what copywriters have to learn from his approach. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: Lewis' Website The Olive Ad Breakdown The Silk Cut ad The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: Copywriters seem to revere old books by Eugene Schwartz and Vic Schwab. But what about old ads? This is The Copywriter Club Podcast. If you've been a copywriter for more than a few weeks, you've probably heard other more experienced copywriters mention books like Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz, How to Write an Advertisement by Victor Schwab or Tested Advertising Methods by John Caples. They make up a large part of the official cannon of copywriting. In fact, David Ogilvy once said no one should be allowed to write a single word of copy until they had finished reading Caple's book seven times. Of course there are new books that ought to be added… books by Joe Sugarman, Ann Handley and Matthew Dix. In addition to books, there are a lot of copywriters who like to study old sales pages. They create swipe files full of them. I do this. My swipe file has more than 1,000 differnent sales pages I've collected over the last decade. Some copywriters even suggest you hand write sales pages as part of your learning. I don't go that far, but I think you can learn a lot by studying the persuasion techniques that copywriters have used in their work. But what about ads? One page with an image, headline, and a few lines of copy? Are they worth studying? And what can we learn from them? My guest on this episode is Lewis Folkard. Lewis has made a bit of a name for himself by picking old print ads from advertising award books, analyzing them, and writing about why they are effective or not. Lewis' breakdowns are more than interesting reading, they're mini-lessons on copywriting, attention-getting and persuasion. He told me why he does it and how it's impacted his business in this interview. Stick around to hear what he had to say. As you might expect, this episode is brought to you by The Copywriter Underground. I've mentioned that I've been rebuilding the content vault and adding a ton of additional workshops to it. Workshops taught be expert copywriters like Parris Lampropoulos, Joanna Weibe, Stefan Georgi, Jack Forde, Chanti Zak, Laura Belgray and dozens of others. And it's not just copywriters, we've got marketing experts teaching how to build funnels, how to market using tools like Linkedin and Pinterest, how to put yourself in the right mindset to succeed and so much more. And that's just the workshops. There are dozens of templates, a community of like-minded writers holding each other accountable, and monthly coaching with me. It's time you joined us inside. Learn more at thecopywriterclub.com/tcu And now, my interview with Lewis Folkard… Lewis, welcome to the podcast. I would love to hear your story and how you became a copywriter. Lewis Folkard: Okay, well, I mean, I guess a lot of copywriters say very similar things in the sense that I feel like I've always had an interest in people and communications. I mean, some of the earlier nonfiction books that I read were kind of about human psychology and communications. I think there was a How to Win Friends and Influence People and another one by Brian Tracy, I believe. But I was young and just always enjoyed learning about how the human mind works and...
Former Washington and current Oregon cornerback Jabbar Muhammad may consider Saturday's Ducks vs. Huskies rivalry tilt to be “just another game,” but old man Christian Caple over On Montlake and I have been around too many years of this to know that's not the case. So this week, we decided to podcast about it. I filled in over on Caple's Say Who, Say Pod this week, where we broke down what the latest iteration of what Ducks/Huskies means and where this rivalry goes from here. For more, listen to this podcast in the player above or find us over on Apple or Spotify.A Thanksgiving note: 1. For anyone listening to, reading or cursing The I-5 Corridor this holiday, thank you. This year has been the most rewarding and challenging one yet, and I'm incredibly grateful this Thanksgiving for every one of you who has encouraged and supported me along the way. I was nominated for Oregon Sportswriter of the Year earlier this week, and I'm up against four great writers from publications that all date back to the 1800s. They have editors, expense budgets and paid time off. I have the occasional midnight text from Shane Hoffmann about typos and an audience that's proven it values and appreciates storytelling. That right there is the win for me, and I thank you all for letting me do this job. 2. Now I have to sell a little bit. We're running a Black Friday sale through Monday where first-time subscribers can get their first year of The I-5 Corridor for $25. For current subscribers, a $25 Corridor subscription might just be the gift you need for that awkward office White Elephant party. I will be on-site for every Oregon event going forward and every sub sold over the next two months is going toward what I expect to be a pretty mega travel bill at the end of this Ducks run. I got my tickets booked for Indy and could really use the help toward whatever trip comes next. There are going to be some truly great stories to tell. Have a great Thanksgiving, Tyson Alger This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.i-5corridor.com/subscribe

Christian Caple has been living in the pacific northwest and covering the University of Washington football team for years, so who better to speak to the potential fit of Husky prospects with the Seattle Seahawks in this year's upcoming NFL draft? And this is no ordinary UW draft class....a record 13 of them participated in the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis last week, and there's a good chance the entire baker's dozen will be drafted, breaking the school record set in 1998 when 10 Huskies were selected. There are some obvious potential connections with Ryan Grubb and Scott Huff joining the Seahawk coaching staff after two seasons on Montlake - will Michael Penix be a potential target for John Schneider as he looks to solidify the QB position for the long-term? - but are there some other logical fits among the group as well? And what are the qualities that Ryan Grubb posesses that lead Caple to believe he'll suceed at the NFL level? Let's discuss...... Welcome to The kbbreview podcast, your host is Andy Davies and this is Episode Three of Season 11 and today we're revisiting one of the biggest topics in this industry and that's installation and apprenticeships. It's a complicated subject and that can often switch people off but, as we'll hear today, the ageing workforce could see half of installers retiring in the next five years AND, in 2023, less than 100 direct kbb installation apprentices were taken on.That maths is not difficult to understand even for us.The annual conference for the British Institute of KBB Installation - or BiKBBI - was held a couple of weeks ago in London. We've featured this event on this podcast before but it's always a rel snapshot of where the debate has moved - if at all - and what activity is being done to address it.So today we'll hear a little bit from BiKBBI CEO Damian Walters for his assessment and then we're going to dip into a panel discussion about apprentices which has some real nuggets in there for all kbb retailers. This very special episode is brought to you with the support of our good friends at kbb Birmingham 2024, Europe's prime hub for the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom industries. So get ready for the ultimate showcase of innovation!
