Have you ever wrestled with the idea of denying yourself, wondering if it means you don't matter? Many of us have been taught to put others before ourselves, but somewhere along the way, that message got distorted into believing our feelings, needs, and limits don't count. When we internalize this misunderstanding, setting boundaries can feel wrong—almost as if we're going against God. But what if denying ourselves doesn't mean becoming invisible or neglecting our well-being? What if it actually means surrendering our will to God while still honoring the way He created us? Let's explore what Jesus truly meant by self-denial and how it aligns with living a healthy, God-honoring life—one where boundaries and love coexist. Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2025 4:39

Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. We continue to draw encouragement to show our gratitude to God for bringing us into His kingdom from these Scriptures in Heb. 13. From verse one, we are encouraged to let our love be continuous. I take that to be another way of saying live to love with Jesus. We are to continually be abiding in Christ so that His love can flow through us as fruit for the glory of God. The author calls our love an acceptable service to God. Beside loving hospitality and remembering prisoners and the ill-treated, we are to understand that we can show our gratitude to God by faithfulness in marriage. Of course, we would expect most believers to be married to another believer, which means that how we love our spouses is an expression of love for Jesus. The most continuous application of Jesus' love in my life is toward my wife. To be sexually unfaithful to one's spouse is to defile, corrupt, soil, or stain the bed upon which their marriage was consummated. The marriage union declared in the ceremony is completed by the first act of sexual intercourse. It is a physical expression of a spiritual and social reality. That union is to be honored because it is the highest good for the couple, the family, and the believing community. However, because marriage was instituted by God, our fidelity in marriage also honors Him. Living to love with Jesus starts with the first and last person we see most days—my spouse. This love is to be continuous, as verse one said, “Let the love of the brethren continue.” If we are married, then having a God-honoring marriage relationship is one part of the race that is set before us, which requires endurance. The only way we can love like that is to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who gave His life for His bride. He fought every temptation within to abandon His bride and serve His own flesh, even to the point of shedding blood. If Jesus lives in us, then we should expect that kind of love to flow out of us toward our spouses. Faithful, enduring, undefiled, pure love continues throughout our lifetimes toward one woman or man with whom we have both declared our commitment publicly and privately consummated that union physically. We have a clear statement by the Holy Spirit that God will judge those who do not hold marriage in honor. Which, by the way, needs to be stated, is only between a man and a woman. To have sex outside of marriage is to dishonor marriage. To have sex with someone who is not your wife or husband is to dishonor marriage. To dishonor marriage is to dishonor God. God will judge not only the sin but also the people who bring shame to Him and the marriage bed. If you have failed to be faithful in your marriage and have defiled your marriage bed, then it's because you didn't believe Jesus is your life. You were entangled by unbelief and set your eyes on someone other than Jesus and your spouse. There's no one else other than blame. I encourage you today to lay aside this sin and the unbelief and repent. Turn your eyes on Jesus and receive His forgiveness, cleansing, and new life. Quit trying to live for Him, and receive His life to be lived through you until the day you die. Purpose to live to love with Jesus every day until your final breath. If you live to love with Jesus, you will overcome the flesh and will honor both God, marriage, and your spouse. Living to love with Jesus is to let love be a continuous expression in your life, which is how you show gratitude to God for His bringing you into His kingdom. This Sunday we'll be finishing up chapter 10 in our study of 1 Corinthians, reading ch 10:23-11:1.Much of what Paul will be doing in this passage is a recap of what he's been encouraging since chapter 8. It all centers around our freedom in Christ and how we manage that in the best way possible. Verse 24 provides the overall ethic that creates guardrails for our freedom. How might an intentional interest in serving others provide parameters for our Christian liberty?Once again, Paul addresses food that might have been used in a pagan ritual, urging us to not ask questions about the origins of the hamburger we're munching. I find that very freeing, don't you? I'm someone who thinks that same principle can be applied to a lot of different elements of life – if we receive whatever it is from God (this, obviously, means things that are not in conflict with his character), we can forgo worrying about where it came from. In fact, v 31 sums that all up pretty nicely – do whatever we do for the glory of God. What does it mean to you to do something for the glory of God? Does that mean make it religious, or something else?Paul also included a qualifier that I'm very stoked he included in v29 and 30. You should read it in the Message version – I love it! It just reminds us that caring for our fellow believer doesn't mean we have to submit ourselves to every person's intolerance. How do you understand the difference between being careful for someone's conscience and resisting legalistic expectations? How can we better walk that balance beam?I'm really looking forward to digging into this on Sunday – I hope you can join us!Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.

People often talk about leaving a legacy behind when they pass away. We may read and talk about those from the past who've left a lasting impression or impact on their generation. We may even know someone whose life has had this effect on our own lives. How should Christians think about the concept of legacy? Does the Bible have anything to say about believers leaving a legacy? What about the church? Should individual churches seek to leave behind a legacy? Join us this week on the Straight Truth Podcast as Dr. Josh Philpot asks Dr. Richard Caldwell to help us think through the concept of legacy and what kind of legacy we should be concerned with that would honor the Lord. Dr. Caldwell says that talking about legacy means we are mindful of the future of those following us and wanting to leave them something that would be helpful when we're gone. He says there are examples of this throughout the Scriptures. One he shares is from Proverbs 13:22, which says, “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous.” He explains that God's blessing on godly people is that even the way He has blessed them follows in future generations where sinners end up with nothing. This is what this verse sort of describes, but it also indicates that this is what man ought to be mindful of. Dr. Caldwell says we see this, whether it's about teaching our children the truths of the Scriptures or the kind of legacies set before us in Hebrews 11. An example of parents with their children is when we read of Paul celebrating with Timothy over the fact that his faith was first seen in his mother and grandmother and how they influenced his life. God sets these examples before us in His Word because they're meant to instruct, encourage, and fortify us in the things we are to live in today. It's in that way believers want to leave a legacy.

What does honoring each other look like in the Bible? Who are the true widows? Who is the Church supposed to help? In his sermon, “Honoring Others Honors God” (1 Timothy 5:1-6:2), Robbie Tschorn answers these questions and more as he speaks about the call for believers to honor God by honoring others. Christians are representatives of Jesus and get the wonderful privilege and opportunity of modeling the Gospel to the world. In 1 Timothy, Paul says that this is accomplished by encouraging everyone, taking care of those in need, looking out for your local Pastor, and honoring those who are in authority over you. These are simple, yet Biblical ways to honor and please God. When a church follows these commands, along with the rest laid out in Paul's letter, they will be the Church that God intends them to be. “I don't know how to process through what I am feeling and struggle with anxiety daily,” a coaching client of mine told me. She continued, “I have been taught my entire life to deny myself, so how do I honor God but also honor who He made me?” Maybe, like my coaching client, you have felt the same way, a world where you need to get yourself together before you can go to God. In this episode, I walk through some scriptures about denying ourselves that are commonly misunderstood and explain how denying our flesh allows our life in Christ to grow, strengthen, and develop.  I'm praying you know you can go to God with how you feel. You don't need to pretend or deny any part of you because He already knows every part. I know this may not feel easy, but freedom is on the other side. It's Christmas Day, Monday, December 25th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Nigerian Christians mourn killing of teenager On December 20th, Muslim bandits allegedly killed 19-year-old Jude Nicodemus and severely injured two others in Plateau State, Nigeria, reports International Christian Concern. In addition, Fulani Muslim militants grazed cattle on other people's property and destroyed produce that was intended for use at Christmas. Matthew 7:18-19 says, “Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.  A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.” Iran threatens to close Mediterranean Sea On Saturday, Iran threatened that the Mediterranean Sea could be “closed” if the U.S. and Israel continued “crimes” in Gaza, reports Reuters. The Iranian government has showed support for Muslim terrorist group Hamas in its war against Israel, while the U.S. has strongly backed Israel — despite growing criticism of the Israeli military's war effort. It is unclear how Iran would follow through on such a threat, as the country has no direct access to the Mediterranean Sea and no major naval presence outside the Persian Gulf. Supreme Court sidesteps decision on Trump presidential immunity Steering clear of a political firestorm for now, the US. Supreme Court said Friday it would not immediately decide the key question of whether Donald Trump has broad immunity for actions he took as president challenging his 2020 election loss, reports NBC News. Without comment, the court denied, special counsel Jack Smith's request asking the justices to circumvent the normal appeals court process and quickly decide the question, which looms large in Trump's prosecution in Washington over allegations of election interference. If Trump were to win on this threshold issue, the charges would be dismissed. If he loses, the legal proceedings in the trial court would continue. Did Trump purposely use Hitlerian language? In a December 22nd interview with conservative radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt, former President Donald Trump defended his comments on immigration, while his critics accused him of using Hitlerian language for saying illegal immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country" during a recent campaign rally, reports The Epoch Times. Listen. HEWITT: “Mr. President, you've also said illegal immigrants are poisoning our blood. What do you mean by that?” TRUMP: “They're coming in from Asia, from Africa, from South America. They're coming from all over the world. They're coming from prisons. They're coming from mental institutions and insane asylums. They're terrorists. “Absolutely!  That's poisoning our country. That's poisoning the blood of our country. We have no idea who they are, where they are.” HEWITT: “Your critics say that you are using Hitlerian language that was used to dehumanize Jews by saying that ‘Jewish blood cannot be part of German blood.' Do you have anything like that in mind when you say ‘poisoning our blood'?” TRUMP: “No. And I never knew that Hitler said it either, by the way. And I never read Mein Kampf, [Adolph Hitler's book.] They said I read Mein Kampf.” HEWITT:  “So, you intend no racist sentiment whatsoever when you say poisoning our blood?” TRUMP: “If you look at the polls, I'm doing incredibly with African Americans, I'm doing incredibly with Hispanics, the highest numbers anyone's ever seen for a Republican candidate. The reason is they know me. Look what I've done. Criminal justice reform. I got the black colleges and universities funded. Nobody else did that. Opportunity zones with Tim Scott. I got that done.” HEWITT: “Your critics keep saying, ‘Oh, he wants to be Hitler. He's talking about poisoning our blood. He's trying to be a Nazi.' How do you respond to these people?” TRUMP: “I know nothing about him. I'm not a student of Hitler. They say that he said something about blood. He didn't say it the way I said it either. by the way. It's a very different kind of a statement. What I'm saying when I talk about people coming into our country is they are destroying our country. We have prisoners coming in. We have mental patients coming in by the thousands. I believe that number will be 15 million people, maybe more than that, by the time this lunatic, [Joe Biden], leaves office.” Planned Parenthood arranging secret out-of-state abortions A new undercover investigative video reveals that Planned Parenthood in Missouri is smuggling minor girls across state lines to get them abortions in Kansas due to Missouri's abortion ban, reports LifeSiteNews.com. In the first segment of an investigative video series conducted by Project Veritas, Priscilla Jones, the receptionist at the Planned Parenthood in Kansas City, Missouri, asked how old the girl was. JONES: “How old is she?” JOURNALIST: “She's 13. Her parents don't know yet.” LaShauna, the Planned Parenthood Managing Director, added her thoughts. LASHAUNA: “Yeah, we don't do them [abortions] here. We don't know them in Missouri. It's illegal. But we do have, I can give you a packet of the two locations that do it in Kansas. They have people that will come pick them up?” JOURNALIST: “Really? That would be so great. Thank you.” Both Priscilla Jones and LaShauna underscored the ease of procuring an abortion for a minor across state lines without her parents' knowledge. JONES: “If you're trying to do without parents knowing, then you need to call because they need to do a bypass.” LASHAUNA: “They will bypass without the parents. You just have to make sure you tell them that.” JOURNALIST: “What is a bypass?” LASHAUNA: “Just not letting the parents know.” JOURNALIST: “Great. So, I can bring her?” LASHAUNA: “Yeah, you just have to call and just tell them the situation and they'll walk you through everything.” John 8:44 describes Planned Parenthood and its minions to a “T.” “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” Great American Family channel honors God And finally, the older she gets, the more actress Candace Cameron Bure feels called by God to take on projects that align with her Christian faith and inspire the next generation, reports The Christian Post. In April 2022, Bure was announced as the chief content officer for Great American Family, a network the actress says  puts God, family and country first, in stark contrast to much of the contact put forth by Hollywood, including the now pro-homosexual Hallmark movies. Bure said, "While not all of the films are faith-forward, you'll see that many of them have little hints of things that people do on a regular basis, like taking time to pray, whether it's praying before meals and before bedtime, or people just honoring God in different ways. Certainly, with our Christmas movies, we remember that Jesus is the reason for the season. The birth of a Savior is why we celebrate Christmas." Bure stars in the Great American Family's new movie, "My Christmas Hero," which pays tribute to the military.
