In this episode Matthew interviews Stacey Tenenbaum, a Canadian filmmaker who produced and directed a beautiful documentary called Scrap. Scrap takes a poetic and meditative look at what becomes of the objects we use after they've ceased to fulfill the function they were originally intended for. The documentary shares the story of some incredible people and spaces, including a photographer who documents e-waste processing facilities in India, an architect who is repurposing parts of ships into buildings, families living in decommissioned aircraft, and an artist who makes amazing sculptures out of old machinery. Perhaps our favorite segment is a thoughtful feature on Ed Metka, the gentle owner of the trolley graveyard featured on Abandoned America. Stacey explores the challenges of filming in the early days of Covid, the behind-the-scenes stories of her production, and much more. Our stuff has a life long after we let it go...On this episode we are still in the thick of it at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival we sift through the beauty of 'Scrap' which is having it's world premiere at the festival.'Scrap' is a visual examination and meditation on the vast haunting spaces where our airplanes, cars, farm equipment and even cell phones go to rust. We get some insight on the beauty, the purpose and the inherent sadness that lies in those things that we leave behind and how putting a little effort into repurposing and restoration might just provide more new life then we can possibly imagine. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with filmmaker Stacey Tenenbaum about the ideas in the film, why it was presented so beautifully and so very much more. You can check out 'Scrap' at the festival (or later this summer and fall when it plays theatres and eventually airs on TV) or you can check it out as a part of the Online Hot Docs package anywhere in Canada as of May 2nd for 5 days.
There is a strange and haunting beauty to the discarded massive objects like ships, planes, cars, and phone booths that sit in waste graveyards around the planet. These relics of the past and symbols of our disposable culture are spotlighted in Scrap, a new documentary by filmmaker Stacey Tenenbaum, who tells the stories of the human beings who live with and have relationships with these objects at the end of their useful life. Scrap draws on poetic, cinematic storytelling to allow us to witness what happens to the mammoth waste that we create and discard, and delves into the lost arts of repair, reuse, and restoration that people are reclaiming.Stacey Tenenbaum is an award-winning producer and director. In 2014 she founded H2L Productions, a boutique documentary film production company. Scrap, a love letter to the things we use in our daily lives, is her third feature documentary and premieres at Hot Docs in May 2022. Stacey is fascinated by things that are old, and she is nostalgic for a time when life was slower, and things were made by hand and built to last. This conversation with Stacey and Reseed host Alice Irene Whittaker looks at Scrap as a window into not just the worlds of waste that exist around our planet, but also the evolving circular economy where we reduce what we use in the first place, and have a clear plan for everything we make and buy so that our world is waste-free and marked by a balanced relationship with nature and one other. Reuse, restoration, the right to repair movement, and the reevaluation of value are explored in this discussion, as is the vital role that storytelling and art play in the revolution to create a circular, just, and regenerative future. EPISODE 31 - Happy Earth Day! Super thrilled to share this episode with you! We have the creator and host of the new Documentary Movie - Scrap. Ten years in the making, 4 years of filming, travel, zoom calls and many hours of effort has resulted in a movie that brings to light the amazing salvaging, upcycling and restoration efforts to divert items from the landfill! We sit down with the writer, director and producer - Stacey Tenenbaum and get some of the behind the scenes access to the process and the result of her movie! The Industrial Age left us with refuse too vast to bury and impossible to ignore. Earth's resources are finite, yet after serving their short-lived purpose, our cars, appliances and electronics takes centuries to decay. These rusting skeletal remains, especially machines that shaped the landscape and our ability to move within it, are valued objects for those willing to reclaim them. A South Dakota farmer transforms oxidized agricultural machinery into beautiful sculptures that reflect the natural world, while across the ocean, British phone booths are painstakingly restored to their former glory. Whether it be living in abandoned aircraft husks on Bangkok's outskirts or transforming freighter ships into architectural wonders, the human capacity to revitalize obsolete artifacts is inspiring. Beneath the rust and flaking paint of these sensitive vignettes is the scale of its subject matter. Soaring aerial images immerse us in post-apocalyptic landscapes that restore faith in a "waste not, want not" world. Alexander RogalskiScrap has partnered with CNIB's Phone It Forward program for their screenings and encourages audiences to donate eligible older cell phones at the theatre. The donated phones will be used to help provide a refurbished smartphone to someone who is blind or partially sighted. Donators will be issued a tax receipt. For More visitHot Docs PageOfficial Film SiteInstagramFacebookTwitterFor more about our business please visithttps://upcyclecanada.ca/Podcast created by True Media SolutionsThank you to Jacob Moon for creating our Podcast Soundtrack - please visit www.JacobMoon.com Support the show

Lisa and Richie talk to this week's Everyday Rockstar, Jeanne-Marie Paynel explains how to balance work and play for kids, Lisa Auslander talks about adapting school for refugee and immigrant students, Stacey Tenenbaum discusses shoe shining, Stacy Penright explains "mental health alarms," Seth Williams gives tips for keeping dogs healthy, Rachel and Ryan May talk about pending legislation for ALS patients.
Everyday Rockstar (0:00:00) Lisa and Richie talk with this week's featured Everyday Rockstar. You can nominate yourself or someone you know by sending us an email at thelisashow@byu.edu. Work/Play Balance for Kids (0:08:18) Finding the balance between work and play seems to be one of the everlasting struggles as an adult. But have you ever thought of it as a problem for children too? We send them to school to learn from teachers and books, but the skills they develop during playtime can be just as important to their development in other ways. So how do you find that sweet spot between work and play? Joining us on the show today is Jeanne-Marie Paynel, a parenting mentor and home consultant, here with us to discuss helping your child balance their work time and play time. Servicing Refugee and Immigrant Students (0:23:37) The early years of our schooling experiences are hard. We try to add our letters and read our numbers and it seems impossible that we'll ever get them straight. But eventually things fall into place and we get the hang of school. However, this experience is not shared by all school kids. There are many students who have experienced interrupted schooling and for whom English is likely not their mother tongue. These students typically come from immigrant and refugee populations and have very different educational needs than those who don't face these barriers. Here to discuss what the educational needs are of these immigrant and refugee students and how to meet these needs is Dr. Lisa Auslander, Principal Investigator and Project Director for New York City's Bridges to Academic Success. Shiners (0:36:20) What image comes to mind when you think of shoe shining? Maybe a busy train station or a stand at an international airport. Probably tall, high-backed chairs occupied by people reading a newspaper. But what about the people in front of the stand, the shoe shiners themselves? What's their story and what led them to shoe shining? Maybe they see it as an art form, or maybe it's just a job that pays the bills. Well, Stacey Tenenbaum asked these same questions, so she set out to find answers. Here to discuss the stories of those in this underappreciated industry is the director of the documentary series "Shiners", Stacey Tenenbaum herself. Your Mental Health Alarm (1:01:20) Over the last few years there has been a lot of focus on spreading awareness of the importance of mental health. Awareness is a fantastic first step, but how do we take care of our mental health? How do we even recognize that we NEED to focus on our mental health? It doesn't always come naturally to take a step back and really think about your headspace. Are we having healthy thought patterns? Are we handling our stressors well? There's so much to keep track of! Luckily for us, there are oftentimes “mental health alarms” that can alert us to the fact that we may need to pay some attention to our mental health. Joining us today to teach us about tuning in to our mental health alarms is Stacy Penright. Between her busy job as a business initiatives consultant with Wells Fargo and her work with her nonprofit “Respect My Voice,” Stacy has had plenty of practice learning to pay attention to her mental health alarms. Keeping Your Dog Healthy (1:19:30) Germany's parliament has recently proposed a law that orders all dog owners to walk their dogs for at least two hours a day. While keeping our most loyal companions physically active is extremely important, is the law reasonable? Life can be busy and two hours can be a huge chunk of our day, and some dogs may not even need two whole hours. So how do we know what's best for our own dog? Joining us today is veterinarian and host of the podcast Vet School Unleashed, Dr. Seth Williams who is here to answer all our questions on how we can keep our dogs physically healthy. ALS Legislation (1:30:51) On The Lisa Show, we are privileged to discuss and learn about a variety of topics. Some are random and silly, and others are deeply meaningful. Today, we are covering one of those personal and important topics. We are discussing ALS. This morning, we feel very honored to speak with Rachel and Ryan May, a couple personally affected by ALS, as they share specific ways in which each one of us can help fight the disease through supporting new legislation.
I had a chance to sit down with the award winning duo of organist Alcee Chriss and filmmaker Stacey Tenenbaum for a fascinating interview about the organ, competitions and more. We talk about Chriss' experience at the Canadian International Organ Competition, the pressures of performing and whether Jazz works on the organ, and I got a chance to pepper Tenenbaum with some questions on filmmaking, and her process of understanding the organ from the point of view of a total outsider. This is a fun one!
Emily and Danita are in interview mode this week as they chat with Stacey Tenenbaum, the director of PIPE DREAMS, a documentary that follows five young organists as they compete in Canada’s prestigious International Organ Competition (or the CIOC) in Montreal. In anticipation of the film’s upcoming world premiere at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, we ask Stacey about the technical challenges of making a film about multiple subjects, subjectivity in documentary, and, most importantly, why we should all eat bananas when we are anxious. We Really Like Her! is produced by Danita Steinberg and Emily Gagne, edited by Sonya Suraci, with a theme song by Emily Milling.
