EPISODE 63 - Billie Kay Asmus - Repaint Studios - PAINTING A GREENER FUTURE WITH THE REPAINT TRAYMeet BillieIn early 2021, I started a small business refinishing and refurbishing furniture in my tiny basement studio. I quickly noticed the constant waste I was going through with plastic paint tray liners and wasn't able to reuse them. Naturally, I went to Amazon and Google to find a reusable option and couldn't find one.So then what?Needless to say, I jumped on the opportunity, filed a patent for a reusable silicone paint tray liner with a lid and the Repaint Tray was born. That's when the journey began.Trust me. I get it.I 100% understand the frustration (and joy) of painting.Realistic ExpectationsSaving you time & creating efficiency.Being an ADHD DIYer entrepreneur mom, time and attention spans are limited.Started a painting project but your kid just woke up from their nap?YEP. I've been there. Need to run off somewhere but don't have time to finish your project? This was me. All the time.Sick of throwing out painting supplies and wasting money and time running back to the store?I 1000% get it!I created the Repaint Tray just for you. DURABLEThe Repaint Tray is made of high-quality silicone, making it more durable than disposable thin plastic liners. In fact, one tray could last you a lifetime.SUSTAINABLERoughly 240 million plastic paint tray liners get tossed into landfills every year. It's time to make a change in a wasteful industry. Not only is the Repaint Tray recyclable, but we strive to translate our eco-conscious efforts throughout the entire company.REUSABLEThe best parts of the Repaint Tray are its reusability and convenience. When you're finished, peel away the paint and rinse the rest.Need to step away from your project? Snap on the air-tight lid, keeping your paint fresh and safe away from pets and kids for when you're ready to tackle that project again.https://repaintstudios.com/___https://upcyclecanada.ca/Check out a great new podcast created just for Dad! E60 - Stephanie Hongo - Creator of Sugarfox - Upcycling Plastics and Trash into Stunning One of a Kind CreationsMY NAME IS STEPHANIE HONGO AND I AM AN AMERICAN ARTIST LIVING IN CONNECTICUT. I HAVE BEEN CREATING ART FOR THE MAJORITY OF MY LIFE, BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL I BEGAN MAKING MY TRASH PIECES THAT I REALLY FELT INSPIRED TO CREATE ART FOR ART'S SAKE. I COME FROM A FAMILY OF CREATORS OF ALL KINDS, FROM CARPENTRY TO TYPOGRAPHY WE ALL HAVE AN ABILITY TO “MAKE THINGS.” THIS BROAD RANGE OF ABILITY AND INFLUENCE WAS A BIG FACTOR IN DEVELOPING MY OWN BRAND OF CREATIVITY.WHEN I FIRST BEGAN MAKING THESE PIECES I ATTEMPTED A WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS: ANIMALS, FLOWERS, INANIMATE OBJECTS, EVEN SPORTS LOGOS. AS TIME HAS GONE ON HOWEVER, I'VE NARROWED MY INTEREST TO MAKING JUST ANIMALS. THIS MAY CHANGE IN THE FUTURE, BUT FOR NOW IT IS WHAT INSPIRES ME MOST. OCTOPUSES AND ANIMAL BUSTS ARE AMONG MY FAVORITE THINGS TO CREATE, AND OCTOPUS PIECES ARE BY FAR THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER.I DO ALL THE WORK ON MY PIECES OUT OF MY HOME. THE STUDIO I HAVE CREATED FOR MYSELF IS ALWAYS FULLY STOCKED WITH A MOUNTAIN OF TRASH AND RECYCLABLES DONATED BY FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND INDIVIDUALS IN MY COMMUNITY. THERE IS FAR TOO MUCH WASTE GENERATED IN THE WORLD. I WANT TO DO MY SMALL PART IN HELPING ELIMINATE SOME OF THAT, WHILE IN TURN MAKING BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE WORKS OF ART. https://www.instagram.com/Sugarfox_art/https://sugarfox.net/___https://upcyclecanada.ca/Check out a great new podcast created just for Dad! "Go there now!"  So I did. I joined the room as it was closing, unaware of the topic of the day, I missed all the great speakers, I was as lost as a grade nine student on the first day of classes! With no thought of the result, no consideration really as to if my words mattered in that moment or if they were going to be received, I shared my praise for her instead of me and my thing - I got out of the way.  The results were fantastic.I have been mulling this over and sharing this thought with others as we cross paths, they tend to write this down as I shared it with them - so here is my thought for this week, and for you - "If you can't find contentment in the journey, it won't be there to greet you when you arrive"  We get in the way by putting ourselves first, even if we are trying to make others around us better - we put great stock in the result, that is where and when we will be content - when I reach this goal, cross that line, hit that target - THEN, and only then will I be content.  Get out of your own way, today!___Check out our Dad Space Community on FacebookVisit DadSpace.ca for everything Dad!Have a podcast and need a great website? He decided to strip these pieces from the homes and save them for future projects. He stored these items in his garage and held small sales.  As these sales became more frequent people started to call him looking for specific items. In 1991 Earthwise was officially born. We set up shop in the SoDo district of Seattle.  In July 2014 we opened our second location in East Tacoma at a vintage sawmill. It is at this location where we mill our vintage beams into all the re-milled lumber you can find at the stores. Earthwise opened our third location in Aberdeen WA in July 2018. My dad was a talented woodworker, my mother a beautiful folk artist. We spent family holidays on the road going 'antiquing' and although I swore I would have a modern home one day I now own a home built in 1856 that needs a lot of love and is full of repurposed furniture and re-loved items. I just love things that have history.About 5 years ago my husband signed me up for Carpentry 101 (thinking it was the cabinetry class I wanted). It turned out to be the best mistake because I loved it and the first thing I did was demo our sons' room...and that is when I found LATH. It was too beautiful to send to the landfill so we took it off board by board and stored it. In March 2019 I made a stylized union jack mosaic for my husband and I was hooked!I love the process of choosing the different wood tones and textures to create the patterns and working piece by piece until the design plan comes together. I love that it's salvaged wood with history that gets a new life. When I think about the progression of my wood art I am most proud of the connections that I have made through my custom work and the unique pieces that I have been trusted to create.I work part time as a furniture restyler at Mango Reclaimed and spend the rest of my time working on projects in our home and following my passion to create sustainable art as The Salvage Life.#thesalvagelife #lathart #reclaimedwood #findyourrepurpose #woodworker #DIYerhttps://www.instagram.com/thesalvagelife/https://wwWe don't have ads in our podcasts, but it doesn't mean that we don't like making them!Wilbur's Horses R Us is here for you!And don't forget - Don't squat with yer spurs on!Support the show

EPISODE 36 - in this episode, we speak with Scott Anderson from Chop Value - Toronto East!  Chop Value collects used chopsticks from area restaurants and repurposes these "disposable" items and recreates amazing creations in the process!Chop Value is a urban harvest used chopsticks. Our resource is what others may view as waste - that means we don't take virgin materials from our environment. Every chopstick is perfect, slender, and defect-free, making them ideal to develop an innovative engineered material.  When designing products, our mindset has been circularity and longevity. This allows us to minimize our environmental impact while creating sustainable solutions engineered to last.We intend to make a differenceWe are completely transparent with our efforts to leave a climate positivefootprint throughout our entire process. Our hope is to help you make more conscious decisions by sharing how wesource our materials, how we process them, and what you can do with yourproducts' end of life. Join us in making the circular economy the new norm.Founder's note: Why I dream about chopsticks. Not too long ago, I tried to apply my wood engineering and stereotypical “German efficiency thinking” (not my quote) totackle the wood and construction waste in Vancouver, Canada. A seminar that presented the research results and potential industry know-how for value-added materials, unfortunately, did not resonate much with industry leaders. It was frustrating, but at the same time eye-opening.I realized that in order to prove sustainable business concepts that rely on under-utilized resource supply, there must be thought leaders who show its viability. It had to be interesting, something easy to comprehend, and something that elicits emotions towards the problem of linear economy and our vast amount of waste. I would need to develop a process that creates innovative, highly value-added, and appealing products from a relatable resource. And that is how Chop Value was born.Fast forward 10 million chopsticks - we have presented our Microfactory concept in more than 10 countries, with media covered in more than 35. For me, we've moved beyond proving that we have built a viable, carbon-negative manufacturing business out of discarded chopsticks, and now it's time to expand this concept globally. Our story resonates with people. We believe that we have the responsibility to educate, inspire, and set an example that resource efficiency thinking should simply be the norm.- Felix BöckChop Value - Toronto EastChop Value - main siteFor more about our business please visithttps://upcyclecanada.ca/Podcast created by True Media SolutionsThank you to Jacob Moon for creating our Podcast Soundtrack - please visit www.JacobMoon.com We don't have ads in our podcasts, but it doesn't mean that we don't like making them!Wilbur's Horses R Us is here for you!And don't forget - Don't squat with yer spurs on!Support the show

Earth's resources are finite, yet after serving their short-lived purpose, our cars, appliances and electronics takes centuries to decay. These rusting skeletal remains, especially machines that shaped the landscape and our ability to move within it, are valued objects for those willing to reclaim them. A South Dakota farmer transforms oxidized agricultural machinery into beautiful sculptures that reflect the natural world, while across the ocean, British phone booths are painstakingly restored to their former glory. Whether it be living in abandoned aircraft husks on Bangkok's outskirts or transforming freighter ships into architectural wonders, the human capacity to revitalize obsolete artifacts is inspiring. Beneath the rust and flaking paint of these sensitive vignettes is the scale of its subject matter. Soaring aerial images immerse us in post-apocalyptic landscapes that restore faith in a "waste not, want not" world. Alexander RogalskiScrap has partnered with CNIB's Phone It Forward program for their screenings and encourages audiences to donate eligible older cell phones at the theatre. The donated phones will be used to help provide a refurbished smartphone to someone who is blind or partially sighted. Donators will be issued a tax receipt. For More visitHot Docs PageOfficial Film SiteInstagramFacebookTwitterFor more about our business please visithttps://upcyclecanada.ca/Podcast created by True Media SolutionsThank you to Jacob Moon for creating our Podcast Soundtrack - please visit www.JacobMoon.com Support the show

EPISODE 25  Hi! I'm Anik, the artist and owner behind Do Re Mi Bracelets etc. located in Gatineau QC, Canada. My passion is reclaiming discarded instrument strings (guitar, piano, violin, etc.) and upcycling them into beautiful jewelry and gifts.I am a woman, an LGBTQ ally, the wife of a Metis man, a French Canadian and more!Core values for me in my business are respect, authenticity, inclusiveness and working in as eco-friendly a way as I can.I don't know if you're a musician like me, but one thing I know for sure is that you know a musician or two.Everyone knows a musician!!When you start to think about how many varieties of stringed instruments that exist in the world, you can only imagine the TONS of waste created in landfills when the broken and discarded strings are thrown away. That's where I saw an opportunity to do my part in helping Mother Nature, one string at a time. But as someone who likes to think outside the box, making the same boring thing, is not my style. I love making unique and creative designs. But if, like me, attention to detail is important to you, in my shop you will find a REFINED TAKE ON RECLAIMED.Do you have a guitar pick from your favourite musician? Do you have strings from your son, mother, partner, or husband's musical instrument? Do you have a special musician who passed away? I can create a keepsake item that is truly personal by using their strings or parts of their instrument. I will treat all the materials received, with extreme respect in the creation of this special item.Having the opportunity to hear the stories from my customers. Hearing about the music and the musicians who touched their lives is a true pleasure. Being able to honour those memories is a privilege.I would love to have the opportunity to work with you and to create something that helps connect you to the music and the memories that you cherish. You have questions or concerns about a purchase? You would like to talk to me about a possible custom order? You have something else that you would like to discuss?https://doremibraceletsetc.ca/For more about our business please visithttps://upcyclecanada.ca/Podcast created by True Media SolutionsThank you to Jacob Moon for creating our Podcast Soundtrack - please visit www.JacobMoon.com Support the show

EPISODE 23On this episode of The UpCycle Canada Podcast we sit down with a creative maker here in Canada that is doing her part to reduce landfill and textile waste!  Meet Gemma Smith from Re-Vive the TEE!The Re-Vive the TEE Story:An affordable and Canadian way to upcycle old clothing that celebrates life, achievements, and adventures. Simply place your order, choose your t-shirts, fleece colour, and mail them to us. Within a short amount of time, you'll have a handmade quilt to hold close, and memories to hold even closer!Hello everyone! My name is Gemma. I'm a mother of three, wife to a very supportive husband, south of England native who emigrated to Canada, and head designer behind RE-Vive the TEE.  I discovered my passion for sewing after having children and wanting to be able to stay home with them, while earning an income. So, for the past 10 years I have been creating special memory keepsake items for family and friends. The idea initially came as my children grew far too quick and I was having a hard time getting rid of their baby clothing. I started to think of how I could keep their baby clothes in a way that wouldn't take up unnecessary storage space, and I would get to enjoy and look at them often, reminiscing on the baby age. My first ever quilt was created from an assortment of my daughters clothing. After sharing a photo of it on Facebook,  I began to receive inquires from other moms who were interesting in preserving their children's clothing through a custom, handmade quilt.  Since then, I have created hundreds of baby quilts for clients across the globe! Fast forward to 2020, I received more and more inquiries and decided to create a simplified version of my jigsaw quilts; one that is affordable and symmetrical, created from equal size blocks in standard sizing. By doing this, we were able to provide a modernized version of our traditional quilts that are of the same quality.  We've also expanded our product line to include larger 16" squares, baby toddler 6" squares and a hybrid combination of 12" and 6" squares. From sports tees, to travel tees, concert shirts, and those from lost loved ones, I love sewing and helping individuals tell their stories with custom made quilts! My personal favourite quilt to make is the memorial quilts for loved ones who have passed because of the comfort these quilts brings for their families, which gives me my “why” and my  feeling of purpose behind RE-Vive the TEE.Our quilts are all constructed with the quality threads and backings, are super warm and extremely durable. Whether your purchasing your quilt for a personal gift or for a loved one, we guarantee you will absolutely adore it!So far, we have two full time members of staff lovingly creating your quilts from my home based studio in Calgary.  Very near future plans include expanding into a new larger manufacturing space where we can employ other makers to help produce these wonderful keepsakes.Ready to preserve your cherished memories? Or perhaps you are trying to think of a memorable gift for your son, daughter, mother or father?Don't let old t-shirts collect dust -  have them  made into a quilt that you can put on display and enjoy every day! Together, we can RE-Vive those TEE's into conversational pieces that invite  trips down memory lane. The best gifts ever  for Canadians from Vancouver and Calgary to Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa, London, Toronto and beyond!https://www.revivethetee.ca/For more about our business please visithttps://upcyclecanada.ca/Podcast created by True Media SolutionsSupport the show

The irresponsible way we consume products leads to heaps of unnecessary waste. In addition to the environmental fallout, unsustainable habits often also lead to higher costs for consumers and businesses, and lower-quality products. Many people want to make environmentally sound decisions but lack the information and community support they need to do so.SolutionEcoRate puts the right information and research at people's fingertips so they can make environmentally informed decisions effortlessly. As this gradually guides more consumers to the most eco-friendly businesses it will incentivize the right behaviors, and support businesses that make sustainable decisions.CommunityWe are a community of people dedicated to improving the sustainability of our everyday choices. You are a part of this community and every search you do and review you submit is a step in the right direction and amplifies the impact of your actions. We're so grateful for your participation! How it WorksSo how does this all work? When you want to go to a cafe, search for it here and we'll show you how environmentally friendly your cafe options are. Our ratings are an estimate of how successful each cafe is at eliminating the use of unnecessary packaging and other material waste. While you're at the cafe, you can leave a review that we'll use to further refine the cafe's rating. Our reviews consist of a small set of specific questions about how your order was served and the general practices at the cafe. This gives our rating system an objective basis. You'll also have fun along the way, so join our community today!Ratings & ReviewsWe process reviews from our community to make an estimate of how eco-friendly cafes' consumer-facing practices are. For example, does a cafe primarily serve drinks in reusable mugs or disposable cups, and do they allow customers bring a thermos? To turn reviews into a rating out of 5, we apply estimates for the environmental cost of producing, cleaning, and disposing of heavily used items. We continually update our environmental cost model as new research becomes available.ImpactWe broadcast your reviews to the whole community, empowering you to have an impact well beyond making your own consumption sustainable. We'll know we succeeded together when the least environmentally responsible cafe chains realize that they need their sustainability-minded clientele, and improve their ways to get us back!App LinksEcoRate is available as iOS and Android apps, and also as a website.
