In this episode of Grand Craft Beer Brian Yaeger is joined by Oregon beer legend, Tim Ensign, Director of Sales & Marketing for Steeplejack Brewing in Portland. They discuss the ins'n'outs of what is a critical, yet perhaps purposefully, overlooked role in the beer industry: sales and marketing, especially when it comes to breweries outside Central Oregon.
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Bob Carbaugh, AIA, Project Architect at Scott Edwards Architecture, LLP in Portland, Oregon. Bob is keenly interested in the integration of story and identity into architecture and interiors. He works frequently in the hospitality sector with restaurant and brewery clients across the nation.Bob shares his insights into working on the Steeplejack Brewery & Taproom located in Hillsboro, Oregon. Built in a vast industrial warehouse space, the 16,500 sf production brewery and taproom faced the challenge of how to architecturally re-interpret their brand identity and humanize the warehouse scale in a meaningful way.You can see the project here as you listen along. The focal point of the building is the brewery itself, on center stage and axially aligned to the front entry doors, so that when you walk in you feel immediately immersed in the brewery. SEA coordinated closely with the system designers to keep things clean and organized so that the tanks stood out. Larger tanks stack behind the smaller ones, and their placement splays outward toward the entry to create a sense of drama and forced perspective. This project had unique challenges and opportunities: re-interpreting the identity of restored a 110+ year old church to an open warehouse, navigating jurisdiction requirements to install an indoor food cart, access to a supply of reclaimed wood, and much more!If you enjoy this episode, visit arcat.com/podcast for more. When she was young, Arden would go to work with her father who was a Steeplejack (a craftsperson who scales buildings, chimneys, and church steeples to carry out repairs or maintenance), played with Lincoln Logs, and went to school to be an Engineer. After working as a Structural Engineer in Portland, Maine for four years, she and her husband (also an Engineer) realized they could have a better financial situation if they bought multi-unit housing. They worked with a very helpful real estate agent, and learned as much as she could. She bought her first investment property in Portland when she was 22, in 2018. They continued investing and use a spreadsheet that they customized to meet their needs. Arden quickly got hooked by the real estate industry. She then went to school and obtained her real estate salesperson's license. When Covid hit, Arden realized she wasn't going to be an Engineer for her entire career. While it was an awesome job with a great company, and she could bring her dog Benny to work with her, working from home during Covid helped her realize the company wasn't the right fit for her, since it stripped away all the fantastic things about the job. But then friends and family then started reaching out for help with real estate, which she really enjoyed. Arden doubled the size of her real estate portfolio within 6 months of working full-time and produced the highest GCI of all solo agents at her brokerage for March of 2022, exactly 12 months after she left her Engineering position. In just four years she now owns and operates 25 units in Southern Maine with a total value of over $3 Million dollars and her net worth just surpassed $1M last month. She loves her job and the people she works with. She is passionate about the power of real estate. Contact Arden by email at soldwitharden@kw.com. Visit Arden's real estate website, Headlight Homes, or her KW website to learn more about her real estate career. For decades breweries have tried to popularize this style, and Americans have spurned them. We'll discuss what cask ales are and why Americans—and Portlanders—are finally starting to drink them.
