On this episode of Cannabis Tech Talks, your host and Editor-in-Chief of Cannabis & Tech Today Charles Warner is joined by cannabis activist & industry pioneer Andrew DeAngelo. DeAngelo shares how he launched one of the first legal cannabis dispensaries in the world, Harborside in Oakland, CA, with his brother and cannabis revolutionary Steve DeAngelo. Together, they conceived and implemented many cannabis industry standards, such as lab testing and child-safe packaging. He shares his experience as an activist for patient rights and details how everyone can get involved with one of his current projects: The Last Prisoner Project. The non-profit works to redress the past and continuing harms of unjust imprisonments for non-violent cannabis offenders. LPP was founded out of the belief that if anyone is able to profit and build wealth in the legal cannabis industry, those individuals must also work to release and rebuild the lives of those who have suffered from cannabis criminalization. The Last Prisoner Project is a social impact partner for the Emerge Virtual Cannabis Conference. Find out more about how you can help. On this episode of Cannabis & Tech Talks, your host Charles Warner, Editor-in-Chief of Cannabis & Tech Today is joined by cannabis activist & industry pioneer, Andrew DeAngelo. Plus, some gentle ranting on the George Floyd murder/protest and how the cannabis industry can meaningfully respond.Preamble: The firestorm of the last two weeks has been smoldering for decades. I haven’t watched and cannot stomach the 9-minute George Floyd snuff film, but the shock of the it has finally awakened the country. I, like many millions, hope that the protests can amend the broken policing and justice systems and finally rid the country of the corruption and malfeasance occupying the White House and Senate.Show notes: I recorded this podcast with Alex Halperin, founder and editor-in-chief of WeedWeek a month before the country erupted. The main part of this interview centers around WeedWeek’s Guide to the California Cannabis Industry, which is available at no fee. No one thought legalizating a state of 40 million people and where the current market is estimated at $3-5 Billion was going to be easy, but no one imagined it would become a bloodbath. California taxes weed at 40% and regulates the industry “more strictly than radioactive waste,” as industry veteran Steve DeAngelo put it. Both factors have kept the illegal market thriving. But there is still much hope that The Golden State can solve some it’s problems. And remember as California goes, so goes the country, so it’s worth watching, especially as some 10 additional states prepare to vote for adult use or medical in the November election (not all ballot initiatives have yet gathered the requisite number of signatures). Gentle rant: Honing in on one topic that Halperin and I touched on briefly: the disregard that many of the more “successful” state legalization programs have for social equity or restitution programs. So many citizens and communities have been disproportionately affected by the Drug Wars and the prison industrial complex but not enough industry leaders have taken up the call for restitution. We have devoted a few (not enough) podcasts to these issues but it is clear that they should be addressed forcefully right now. This is a golden opportunity to create a more fair and just cannabis industry. I don’t think profit should be the sole definition of “success.” Every cannabis company should think about instituting training, development and education programs that help to make amends for the injustices of the past (and present) and build a more inclusive future. Yes, it’s difficult to create such programs. They take time and money and there are no guarantees, but that doesn’t mean the effort should be glossed over. As William Faulkner noted: “The past is not dead. It’s not even past.” This is especially true with the racism that continues to underlie cannabis prohibition and keep people out of the industry. Random Final Notes: It goes without saying but I’m going to say it anyway: Make sure you’re registered to vote. Even if you feel that voting is an inadequate response to the primacy of the moment, read Stacey Abrams’ essay on the importance of this seemingly inconsequential act. Hear her out and then just do it. Al Sharpton’s eulogy at the George Floyd memorial was extraordinary. It was as if he waited his entire life to deliver this searing indictment of the power structure that took Mr. Floyd’s life. His oratory ensures that the phrase “Get your knee off our necks” will become the battle cry for this moment in time. If you have some pennies laying around think about tossing a few to NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. This org has been fighting the racial justice for 50 years and has never wavered from this position. This insightful essay by Eric Altieri, NORML’s Executive Director, spells out the struggle without glossing over the difficulties ahead. For a wise inquiry on the ways we white Americans can respond to the open wound of racism, listen to Tara Brach’s talk, A Courageous Presence With Racism. It’s honest and at times tough and this white man couldn’t stop thinking about it. And remember, every protest counts, even if you’re the only one. (Thank you, Dave Pell)

Andrew & his brother Steve Deangelo have been outspoken & very well respected cannabis activists for many decades. When the rest of the World was ignoring the cannabis prohibition issue, Andrew & Steven were out fighting to break cannabis stigmas, educate & break down archaic prohibition laws that were quite literally hurting people from all walks of life, all over the World. Andrew joined me to talk about his life and to discuss his theories & perspective on the plant. He was thoughtful, gracious & very open hearted, they type of qualities that make people great leaders. This was another bucket list interview for me, one I won’t forget & one that I’ll listen to time & time again. I hope you enjoy.. Twitter = @Andrew_DeAngelo
Steve DeAngelo, cannabis activist and entrepreneur, discusses legalization in California beginning with the secret history of Prop 64. He poses the question: "Is flawed legalization better than no legalization at all?" In that same vein, DeAngelo notes that, because every part of the supply chain is now taxed, adult use has paradoxically driven some people out of the system rather than bringing them in. Correct regulation is certainly of the utmost importance: "[Comprehensive product safety testing is] what we do with every other product that's designed for human consumption in this country. That's what cannabis consumers deserve: the same degree of protection that every other consumer gets. And we've been denied that, and it has impacted our health, and it has killed us, and it's long overdue for it to stop."

Lori Ajax, Chief of the newly minted Bureau of Cannabis Control, didn’t know what hit her when voters passed Prop 64, legalizing recreational marijuana in California. Overnight, she was thrown into an entirely new world. In the space of the next 13 months, she would have to set-up a regulatory framework to reverse a near century of prohibition in the Golden State. As she worked around the clock to hire staff, create guidelines, and make sense of the illicit market, Steve DeAngelo, the so-called “father of the legal cannabis industry” and founder of Harborside, one of the state’s biggest marijuana dispensaries, was getting ready for his victory lap. But things didn’t exactly go according to plan. In episode one, two of the biggest names in legal weed offer dueling narratives of what happened and what’s to come for the biggest marijuana market in the US.
California's Steve DeAngelo has led the battle to overturn cannabis prohibition in that state, now Chairman Emeritus of Harborside, a vertically integrated California cannabis company, he is taking on his next challenge, purging the US Prison system of all those people who have been incarcerated for cannabis crimes. It's called The Last Prisoner Project, and he tells us about it on In The Weeds with Jimmy Young.
Steve DeAngelo — who is is nothing short of a cannabis industry icon, having co-founded Harborside, Steep Hill Labs, Arcview Group, and the NCIA — recently returned to the Ganjapreneur.com Podcast for an interview with our host TG Branfalt. In this interview, Steve shares the experiences that led to his entry to the cannabis movement and eventually the professional cannabis space. From his earliest advocacy efforts, toking up in front of the White House at the annual 4th of July smoke-in, to the modern industry's launch following California's historic medical cannabis legalization, Steve shares the inspiration behind Harborside and explains how the birth of that now-iconic business led also to the founding of Steep Hill Labs (the nation's first cannabis testing lab), the National Cannabis Industry Association (the industry's first trade organization), and eventually the Arcview Group. He also shares stories of grappling with the reality of doing business in a post-prohibition landscape despite the thousands of individuals still locked away for cannabis crimes, and explains his plan for ending cannabis imprisonment on a global scale. The Last Prisoner Project's Executive Director Sarah Gersten joins ‘Father of the Cannabis Movement' Steve DeAngelo to explain the mission The post Steve DeAngelo: ‘We Won't Stop Until Every Marijuana Prisoner Is Released' appeared first on The Cannabis Reporter.
Known for his years of fighting for legalization of cannabis, Steve DeAngelo sits down with us to talk about his experiences on the front lines of the cannabis movement with Jimmy and Curt on this edition of In The Weeds with Jimmy Young!
Harborside CEO Andrew Berman sat down with James Black to share the origins of the company and its founder Steve DeAngelo (1:12) his thoughts on the importance of "clean cannabis" (6:45), and the traits of a premium cannabis product (9:30). Listen until the end to learn more about Andrew's brief life in politics, Harborside's success in fighting federal government over civil forfeiture, and his predictions around relaxing cannabis advertising standards.
After 40 years of advocating for his plant, Steve DeAngelo's work remains unfinished. You know him from Weed Wars, seen him interviewed on TV and quoted in major newspapers and magazines. An outspoken entrepreneur and cannabis evangelist, his strong opinions range from his hesitancy to talk about cannabis and spirituality to what’s good and bad about California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s pot policy. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
With his hippie pigtails and smart suits, Steve DeAngelo perfectly embodies the split in today’s cannabis industry. He’s an old-school activist and advocate, but he’s also a canny businessman. DeAngelo co-founded Harborside, one of the first six dispensaries licensed in the US; Steep Hill Laboratory, the first dedicated cannabis lab, and the Arc View Group, the first cannabis investment firm. He's the author of The Cannibis Manifesto and star of the TV show Weed Wars.

Steve DeAngelo (1:00), co-founder and president of ArcView Group – a leading cannabis investment and research firm – discusses his recent Vancouver cannabis investment forum. He brings to the show insight from California, world’s largest legalized recreational market. With industrial land vacancy rates at an all-time low in Metro Vancouver, where will cannabis production facilities set-up shop? Andrew Rojek (15:15), market intelligence manager for Western Canada at Colliers International, argues why B.C.’s Agricultural Land Reserve might be the solution. BIV reporter Patrick Blennerhassett (27:13) looks at how much tax Canadian workers pay compared to other OECD countries. Check out the Business in Vancouver team’s stories at https://biv.com.
Steve DeAngelo returns to discuss California since new regulations went into affect on January 1st, and his thoughts on the rescission of the Cole Memos which happened January 4th. Steve does commend the Bureau of Cannabis Control for hitting the 1/1 date as it did go more smoothly than he expected. That said, Steve notes that the real hard work happens now- between 1/1 and 7/1 as July 1st is the set date for temporary regulations and licenses to end and the new reality to begin. On the rescission of the Cole & Ogden Memos, Steve says he wasn’t surprised. But he says that a key part of any US Attorney’s job is to survey the totality of lawbreaking that’s happening in their district and identify that lawbreaking which is the greatest public safety threat and focus on it.
Most of the RED HOT HEALTHCARE podcast shows are about 30 minutes in length. However this one was a true 'hour of power' - and perhaps my most engaging yet. Because I was lucky enough to have secured an interview with Steve DeAngelo. Steve is an undisputed national leader and provocative visionary in the cannabis industry. With four decades of activism and advocacy, he’s inspired millions of individuals to not only learn about and benefit from cannabis, but also in influencing efforts to pass laws in local, state, and even foreign countries. He co-founded Harborside Health Center, the largest and most successful medical marijuana dispensary in the world. He's also the co-founder and president of the ArcView Group a company and investor network, which successfully introduces investors to the cannabis community. He also wrote a powerful and well-researched book, which completely transformed the way that many individuals, including myself, have come to view cannabis. It's called The Cannabis Manifesto - and I highly suggest you make this your next purchase and read. Steve has been featured in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, CNN, O’Reilly Factor, the Associated Press, Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, the BBC, the Discovery Channel, Fortune Magazine, Forbes Magazine, and many other major media outlets. In this show episode...Dr. Steve and Steve DeAngelo discuss some incredible dialogue on cannabis, including: The 'tainted' history and perpetuated lies (some eye-opening 'Whoppers') Why it is NOT an intoxicant Steve's unique history (From MLK, Freedom Riders, and Joining the 'Yippees'...to graduating Magna Cum Laude and going to Law School) Explaining its "ELEGANT & MAGICAL" impact on fighting cancer Why its legalization actually strengthens communities The story of success with Harborside Health and the ArcView Group And so much more...

He also co-founds Ecolution INC producing over 100 consumer hemp items with his partner Steve DeAngelo. He launched one of the very first websites showing and explaining the industry of Industrial Hemp. Now he is the president of VoteHemp.com. Vote Hemp is a national, single-issue, nonprofit organization dedicated to the acceptance of and free market for industrial hemp, low-THC oilseed and fiber varieties of Cannabis, and to changes in current law to allow U.S. farmers to grow the crop. Our ultimate goal is having hemp grown on a commercial scale in the U.S. once again and for the crop to be able to be processed here as well. We educate people on the issues surrounding hemp, register voters, and build coalitions to fulfill our mission. Vote Hemp is working to shift federal regulation of industrial hemp farming out of the hands of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and get hemp farming regulated on the state level.
You know those rare moments in life where you get to meet a truly celebrated figure? Someone whose face you’ve seen online & in print? Someone who’s built up a worldwide following behind their work - and for one brief, shining moment you get to sit and chat with them? How often do these real life meetings ever live up to the hype? How often do we build up an impossible image of the celebrity in our own minds - that when we meet them in the flesh - it pales in comparison to the shining visage we’ve erected in our minds??? THIS was not the case as Anne & I had the great pleasure to find out - as we sat down for an hour to talk with the venerable Steve DeAngelo this past week. We spent weeks e-mailing back and forth with his camp, reading his book, watching his Youtube videos and appearances - so that we could get good and ready for this talk with a man who has been on the Activist & Advocacy front of the Cannabis world for some 40 years. For those not fully familiar with his work, Steve is the owner of the Harborside Health Center in Oakland, CA - the largest medical cannabis dispensary in the United States, serving over 200,000 patients. Fortune Magazine has named him one of the top 7 most powerful people inside the Marijuana Industry today. He’s written a terrific book about the history of cannabis, prohibition, and his own work inside this world - The Cannabis Manifesto. And is also the co-founder and president of the Arcview Group - a company aimed at introducing bright, promising cannabis entrepreneurs to angel investors who can fund their work. We speak to Steve about his path of Activism & Entrepreneurship (and why he sees them as mutually beneficial). About his own time & connection to our neck of the woods, inside the Emerald Triangle, and his own love of the culture we have built up here and the work of the legacy cannabis farmer. He shares his thoughts on the unique challenges confronting our community and the tools he sees as key to staying vital & financially solvent in the tumultuous time to come. He talks about the ways in which the Prohibition era programmed us toward a mentality that will not sustain us in the next iteration to come. And the shift he sees as critical to become viable in the new, legitimate marketplace. And he offers us guidance on how to continue to affect the current paradigm surrounding cannabis. Moving, as he says, “out of the shadows & into the Light.” And ultimately Steve guides back to the plant itself. To those amongst us who are called to work with and cultivate it. To use it reverently & as the healing, medicinal currency for which it is best suited. To caretake the plant so that it can caretake us and our families and communities, and usher in the type of world we wish to inhabit… We simply must be willing to sit & listen.. Anne & I took this moment to ready ourselves for our big TALK with the intrepid Steve DeAngelo - the subject of next week's forthcoming episode. We'll be talking to Steve about his book - The Cannabis Manifesto - why he chose to pursue Entrepreneurship as his own path to Activism & what he's learned inside his 40+ years as a rabble-rouser, community organizer, leader & voice against Prohibition. Plus his work inside Harborside Health Center, in Oakland, CA, as well. As an added bonus to our loyal listeners, though this talk is scheduled to take place tomorrow, let us know if there's some burning questions you'd like to have answered. We've got our own list of go-to's and entreaties we'd love to hear more about, but this is a great opportunity to get some personal Q&A's fielded by one of the leading experts in the Cannabis field. Pop us a line over @ email@example.com Mention Steve DeAngelo in the subject line. And be sure to get them into us by 10 AM (PST), Wednesday, October 4th. The Cannabis Manifesto is both a call to action and a radical vision of humans' relationship with this healing but controversial plant. Steve DeAngelo, the founder of Harborside Health Center, the world's largest medical-cannabis dispensary, presents a compelling case for cannabis as a wellness catalyst that must be legalized. His view that there is no such thing as recreational cannabis use challenges readers to rethink everything they thought they knew about marijuana. The Cannabis Manifesto answers essential questions about the plant, using extensive research to fuel a thoughtful discussion about cannabis science and law, as well as its biological, mental, and spiritual
Steve DeAngelo, Harborside & Amy O'Gorman Jenkins, Legislative Advocate Steve DeAngelo returns to hammer home the fact that there is one issue and one issue alone on which the American people agree- cannabis reform and to that end...in a true master class on activism, Steve shares how exactly to express your concerns on cannabis reform to your local elected officials….and loved ones for that matter. Steve also takes some time to share some history which we very much appreciate. But Amy first shares that as a lobbyist, you don’t need to be a posterior. She shares her background in the state legislature of California as well as the league of California cities where she experienced that a lot of work does in fact get done at the local and state level...but that most people don’t understand that introducing or changing policy is all very incremental.
Steve DeAngelo is the co-founder and CEO of Harborside Health Center. He finds it exciting to be a cannabis activist since the numbers of people who are interested in the cannabis industry is increasing. DeAngelo believes that networking and creating relationships with other folks will create value to the space, not to mention, it makes the experience very engaging for the cannabis enthusiasts.
A longtime activist and patient, Dani Geen is an expert in cannabis concentrates and the healthful aspects of ‘dabbing.’ As a member of the executive team at Harborside Health Center, Dani is privy to the latest products and methods of consumption on the market, and to the evolving science of cannabis medicines. Now ready to share what she’s learned, Dani hopes to remove the stigma of dabbing, and educate other patients and adult-use consumers on its many benefits compared to other methods of consumption. Because her parents were patients, Dani became familiar with cannabis as a medicine at an early age. In high school she began having severe pain issues and subsequently started studying the plant more seriously. In 2006 she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia while attending college for artist management and music tech studies. Lacking medical insurance and not wanting to rely on opiates, Dani turned to cannabis for relief, eventually discovering the powerful efficacy of extracts. In 2008, Dani began working at Harborside Health Center—the nation’s largest model cannabis dispensary, based in California—while finishing school. After a short time in Harborside’s Ombuds department welcoming and orienting patients, she was quickly recruited to the executive management team alongside executive director and co-founder, Steve DeAngelo. While traveling across the country with Steve, Dani was introduced to a titanium nail and Healthstone pipe. She discovered that the higher cannabinoid profiles of the concentrates used by this method gave her the edge she needed to combat her fibromyalgia and to quit smoking cigarettes. She’s now been pharmaceutical-free (and a non-smoker) for nearly six years. Dani is currently exploring the benefits of torch-less e-nails, and concentrates with and without terpenes, preferring live resins, ‘terp juice’ and solvent-less ‘rosin’ or hash oil to flowers. She’s also a knowledgeable and gentle guide for novice dabbers. “Start small and work your way up,” she says. “Make sure you stay hydrated and are in a comfortable area for your first time.” She can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Steve DeAngelo has been an activist for as long as he can remember. Coming from a self-described “Civil Rights Family,” he even attended Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington as a 5 year old. When he discovered cannabis at age 13, he felt like he truly found his life’s calling. He ‘joined the revolution’ at age 16 when he banded up with the Youth International Party, and spent the next few decades standing up for his principles as an activist. By the mid 2000s, Steve founded the dispensary paragon Harborside Health Center, and by 2010, had founded the ArcView group to guide the burgeoning legal cannabis industry, thus firmly establishing himself as one of the greatest and most effective advocates for cannabis legalization of all time. When Steve DeAngelo talks, people listen. With us, he shares his thoughts on California’s push for proper regulation, as well as his thoughts on the industry and movement as a whole.
California says it's legal. The Feds say it's not. What's a poor Californian to do? We talk to Steve DeAngelo, star of the Discovery Channel's reality program, Weed Wars, and to Tamara Todd, an attorney who specializes in drug law and the constitutional questions that arise when the states and the federal government follow different drug policies.
