A poor gas outlook is seen as the main suspect for further job losses in manufacturing. The country's largest gas user Methanex is proposing to move from two plants to one for the foreseeable future. It comes after Winstone pulp confirmed plans to shut two mills to more than 200 workers earlier this week. Former president and CEO of Methanex, Bruce Aitken told Mike Hosking we lack a long term, coherent energy strategy. He says if you want to build power stations or wind farms, they take many years in planning and construction. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
New Plymouth's mayor is blaming the last Government's gas policy for Methanex's proposal to scale down. The country's largest gas user plans to move from a two-plant operation to one, and lay off staff for the foreseeable future. Its managing director says policy settings since 2018 haven't been conducive to sustaining gas supplies for more than one plant. Neil Holdom says it'll be a blow for the region, but the writing's been on the wall. "We saw this coming in 2018, with the last Government's flawed energy policy. This is a direct and logical consequence that was always going to happen - we told them it would happen." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Another blow for regional New Zealand and the manufacturing industry is being seen as potentially devastating. Methanex is proposing cutting staff and moving from two plants to one. Earlier this week Winstone pulp confirmed plans to shut, putting more than 200 jobs on the chopping block after soaring energy prices. Energy Resources Aotearoa's John Carnegie told Ryan Bridge the system is going from crisis to crisis - something he believes is predictable following the oil and gas ban. He says it leaves a hole in the confidence of investors. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Industrial Hemp Podcast is back after a short break. Episode one of Season Four is available now. The theme of this episode is Good News, because there seems to be a fair amount of it these days in the hemp space. One such piece of positivity comes to us from podcast guest Morgan Tweet, executive director of the Hemp Feed Coalition, a nonprofit organization working to gain federal approval for hemp grain as a commercial livestock feed. “The good news to share is we've completed a key milestone in the regulatory pathway for federal approval, specifically for hemp seed meal, as an ingredient for laying hens,” said Tweet. “This is a big deal,” she said. “We got the nod of approval from FDA CVM. They have made the recommendation for approval, to allow this as an ingredient. So it's a big deal. It's a long time coming.” On this episode, Tweet explains the process of introducing new ingredients into the commercial feed supply and how hemp presents some unique challenges to the feed control officials. She said there are still hoops to jump through but expects hemp seed meal to be granted approval as a feed for laying hens after a final vote by the Association of American Feed Control Officials this August. Continuing with theme of good news, hempcrete builder Cameron McIntosh shares the news on this episode that his company Americhanvre has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research grant. “We received a fully funded direct-to-phase-two award, worth $1.9 million, for research and for studying the Ereasy hempcrete system and methodology,” McIntosh said. “So that's about the best news I could give you.” The system is a spray-applied method of building with hempcrete, a faster and more efficient delivery system compared to the traditional cast-in-place method of building with hemp. “Building and construction are globally responsible for 30% of our carbon emissions,” McIntosh said. “I think (this grant) is an acknowledgment by, not only the U.S. Army, but the entire Department of Defense and even the entire federal government that they need to encourage and be interested in carbon sequestering, sustainable, renewable building technologies,” he said. We'll also hear some good news from Patrick Atagi, president and CEO of the National Industrial Hemp Council of America, about the work his organization is doing to get hemp on a level playing field with other commodity crops in the eyes of the USDA. And finally, Tennessee filmmakers Jordan Berger and Maxwell Duryea stop by the Lancaster Farming podcast studio in Ephrata to share some good news about their documentary about industrial hemp called One Plant. I took the podcast on the road again. Sort of. I took a plane this time. Either way, I spent four days last week in Colorado at the ninth annual NoCo Hemp Expo in in Colorado Springs. This is the largest gathering of its kind in the U.S. Part expo, part educational experience, it was a celebration of all things hemp. One highlight for me was seeing Lancaster County's own Steve Groff on the main stage talking about cover crops, no-till farming and growing hemp. Another was observing the degree to which fiber and grain are dominating the conversations around hemp, as more people embrace hemp's potential as a material and a food. One of the key moments of the expo for me was a Thursday morning meeting of industry leaders and stakeholders to discuss hemp priorities for the 2023 Farm Bill. A majority of the national and state level trade associations participated. This week's podcast will focus on that meeting. What are the industry priorities for the Farm Bill? Is there consensus? What are the differences and how can they be reconciled? And what is the state of the hemp industry coming out of NoCo 2023? Listen and find out. In April of this year, Trillium Flow Technologies completed its acquisition of Termomeccanica Pompe. The merger brought together two titans in the pump industry. Adding Termomeccanica Pompe's product and service lineup to Trillium's existing pump offering created a unique opportunity to provide customers with a robust range of complementary solutions. Host Michelle Dawn Mooney got the chance to speak with Edoardo Garibotti, Managing Director for Trillium Pumps Italy, and Sam Eccles, Product Director for Pumps, about the exciting changes. Throughout their discussion, Mooney, Garibotti, and Eccles touch on the following: Why Trillium and Termomeccanica make such a great fit The markets served and their complementary offerings An update on how the integration is going at the six month mark Some of the challenges faced during the integration and how Trillium Flow Technologies is overcoming them “The surprise wasn't that there were challenges, but opportunities,” Garibotti said. “We found the people linking the two companies were linked by the same values. It was the same mentality, and it was quite simple to bring people together and come to a common understanding.” Edoardo Garibotti's experience with Termomeccanica Pompe spans a career of twenty-three years, with a total of thirty in industrial supply chain management. Sam Eccles is an engineer and MBA who joined Trillium Flow Technologies in May 2022. One plant every four seconds - that's how many were put in the ground across the Wellington region over the winter planting season. The number of plants sowed between June and August this year hit 850,000 - double that of the same period last year. The feat was achieved in the midst of the wettest winter on record for the region, following the wettest summer too. Greater Wellington Catchment Management team member Wayne O'Donnell spoke to Corin Dann.

This week, we talk to Freya Bartles from Hemp Cooperative Ireland, a group that is helping to facilitates the growth of the Irish hemp industry, which has many of the same challenges and opportunities that we see here in the U.S. There is great interest in the crop among Irish farmers and entrepreneurs who see it as a way to bring prosperity and healing to the land and the rural communities that live off that land. According to Freya Bartels, board member of Hemp Cooperative Ireland, hope is high for hemp in Ireland despite the lack of processing capacity and viable markets. Part of the challenge of building the hemp industry is cutting through the hype and stigma, she said. On one hand, you've got the marijuana association. On the other, you've got the hype about how hemp can save the world with the 50 million things hemp can do. To cut though the noise, Hemp Cooperative Ireland has developed an educational framework they call the Seven Pillars of Hemp, which Bartels described as a way of “dividing the overwhelming benefits of hemp down into chapters on what hemp can do for you.” Learn more about Hemp Cooperative Ireland and the Seven Pillars of Hemp https://hempcooperativeireland.com/ IG, FB, TW: @hemp_cooperative_ireland Please support One Plant, a documentary film series https://www.oneplant.film/ Join PA Farmers Union, Win Deluxe Farm Aid Concert Package Thanks to our sponsors IND HEMP https://indhemp.com/ King's Agriseeds https://kingsagriseeds.com/hemp

On this week's podcast, Lancaster Farming talks to Jordan Berger, a filmmaker and hemp farmer from Tennessee. His work with the crop has inspired him to embark on a seven-part documentary series to bring the story of hemp to a wider audience. In 2019, Berger grew his first hemp crop, about an acre of CBD plants at his small farm outside of Chattanooga. He said he learned a lot from growing the crop and talking to other farmers. “It became clear to me that I needed to make something,” he said. “You know, I'm always asking what could I do? What kind of impact could I make, either as a farmer or a filmmaker? To me, it's really clear that I could make a bigger impact making a film about (hemp) that the masses could digest and understand and get excited about.” Apparently, this documentary is the first of its kind. “It's just surprising to me that we're in 2022 and there's not anything out there like this,” he said. “Most of the cannabis documentaries are all kind of caught up in pot culture or, you know, are only scratching the surface. And there's so much more to tell.” This summer, Berger is embarking on a cross-country road trip to document the burgeoning industry, visiting hemp farms and processing facilities to interview the people who are building this industry. Prior to One Plant, he served as COO of the venture capital firm SOL Global. Wilks also spent more than a decade scaling licensed retail brands including PinkBerry and Cold Stone Creamery. We dive into how Adam got involved with the folks at Columbia Care and how he and Mike Tyson got into business together. We say this often, but this week we have a very special episode of the High-Rise. Our hosts Cy and Emily along with a returning guest host — the founder of One Plant, recovering lawyer, and cannabis insider Brady Cobb. The conversation stays focused on a single topic this week which is the States Reform Act. What does this mean for the cannabis industry? In essence this legislation would federally decriminalize cannabis and fully defer to state powers over prohibition and commercial regulation. The bill was written by Nancy Mace a Republican Representative from South Carolina. The framework for this bill differs from the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act written by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in a few distinct ways but also stays true to the spirit behind Schumer's bill as well. We let Brady take the floor and give us a bit of an inside scoop on all the details around this new legislation and how this could finally be what brings the US cannabis industry out of prohibition forever. As always we hope you enjoy this week's discussion, please do leave us a review and subscribe for all future High-Rise episodes wherever you stream your podcasts!https://twitter.com/BCobblawhttps://oneplant.ushttps://www.leafly.com/news/politics/states-reform-act-republican-marijuana-legalization-bill-analysishttps://mjbizdaily.com/south-carolina-republican-reveals-marijuana-legalization-bill-shell-introduce-in-congress/

Today's episode Sesame Street is brought to you by the number 4 and the letter T...wait, nope. This is Totally Tell Me Everything and we're talking about tea. The kind you drink, silly. We couldn't record a show about tea without having some of it while we talked. right? What were we drinking? Sarah made herself a glass of iced green tea with honey, and Bryn had hot peach tisane. Question 1: What is it about tea that you are into? Bryn starts us off by talking about the appeal of the ritual of tea, informed by her daily tea-drinking husband's deep thoughts about this caffeinated beverage: “Tea is MOMENT. Tea is a respite in your day. It's a moment of quiet and mindfulness and contemplation or just resting and not doing. It's a moment for just being.” Herbal teas/tisanes are Bryn's jam these days, as she tries to avoid caffeine. She likes iced tea with flavored simple syrups that she makes herself. Sarah first became interested in tea thanks to everyone's favorite bald Starfleet hottie, Captain Picard, thanks to his iconic order: Tea, Earl Grey, Hot, even though Sarah likes to drink Lady Grey better than the Captain's fave. But her big tea love is British High Tea! She got into this in when she was just out of college. She and her girlfriends would go about once a month and try out different tea rooms around LA, from the Valley to Orange County. While in London on their honeymoon, Richard and Sarah went to have High Tea at Harrods of London. It did not live up to her expectations. :( A better tea experience, however, was at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood in 2004, when Sarah and her mom enjoyed a special tea-movie special event. The movie was Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. The theater rented out a dining space in the upper levels of Hollywood and Highland, for an Afternoon Tea Seating. After the film (which she loved), they were escorted across the street, up stairs and into this ballroom space with round tables all set with the traditional tea service 3-tiered tray. On walls and columns were costumes, photos and paintings from the movie. And seven Disney princesses walked around and visited your table, and you could go visit Ariel in her grotto. It was the BEST. Check out pics from Mouseplanet! (Side note: Stan Lee did not limit his cameos to just Marvel films. He has a rather disturbing cameo in this film!) Education Corner: Low Tea vs. High Tea Question 2: What we want to learn about/deep dive? Sarah was determined to find out where tea comes from and why there are different types. Her research came from a book! Some highlights: All tea comes from ONE PLANT, no matter the type. A single species of plant Camellia sinensis. An evergreen shrub that has small white aromatic flowers. The leaves of this plant create tea when processed correctly! Processing is what creates the different types. If you pluck the leaves off the plant and throw them in boiling water, you get a bitter beverage. The process has 5 stages: Step 1: Withering - the leaves and buds are softened on large racks in a heated room or air-dry in the sun. Starch in leaf begins to convert to sugar, moisture content drops. WHITE TEA uses mostly the white buds, and maybe a leaf. Step 2: Rolling - leaves are now soft and pliant and can be rolled - this twists and crushes the leaves and releases sap and stimulates fermentation. (GREEN TEA is immediately heated and dried, and does not go under the next Oxidation step) Step 3: Oxidation - VIP b/c here is where the flavor and value are determined. Rolled leaves are placed on trays at a 1-2” thickness, then left in a cool damp place for 1-3 hours to oxidize. This causes a chemical reaction which heats the leaves. If the temp gets too high, the leaves taste burned. Too low and you have a metallic aftertaste. Oxidation makes leaves turn from green to copper. (OOLONG tea is partially oxidized (about 60%, then goes to next 2 stages.) Step 4: Drying - Oxidizes leaves are dried with hot air on a conveyer belt, which stops the fermentation process and turns the leaves the characteristic dark brown or black. Step 5: Grading/Sorting - Sorted into leaf grades based on size. Whole leaf produces the finest quality tea, dust size are used for the quick-brewing tea bags. Herbal Teas, Rooibos and Yerba Mate do NOT come from this Camellia Sinensis, and we should be calling them “tisanes” (rhymes with “inane” and “brynane”), a medicinal drink or infusion. Sarah also wanted more info on the origin of British Afternoon Tea. It's fascinating! Thanks, Anna Russell, Duchess of Bedford, for the tea, coffee and freedom. Bryn's deep dive this month was shallow, as she sought the answer to the question: Is sun tea actually dangerous? Bryn was an ‘80s kid, and her mom made a lot of sun tea Verdict: Snopes says don't do it: Tea steeped in a jar on your porch doesn't get hot enough to kill the beasties in the water or the tea. Question 3: What are you excited about regarding tea? Sarah and Bryn are both all about the vessels! Bryn brought out an array of some of her favorite cups for drinking tea Miss Piggy, Tony Brown, Unurth ceramics, Sarah shared a new-found story behind her mom's tea set: a vintage 1960s Japanese Somayaki Green Double Wall Tea Pot with 4 cups, a creamer and sugar bowl from Matsunaga Ceramics Shop. The heart shape cut outs represent plovers (Chidori) - a species of wading bird. Notice the wavy brush pattern below? That represents waves. This combination of plovers and waves is called Nami-Chidori in Japanese, and is a common motif in Japanese arts. She's just so tickled that this tea set she grew up with turns out to have such history! Final Thought Sarah says tea is a moment, but it also creates a memory, whether it calls you back to an amusingly disappointing Harrods experience or a precious time with family from long ago. For Bryn, tea is another way to perform self care in a time when life seems to move too quickly. And perhaps the best final thought came from Eleanor Roosevelt (Or did it?): A woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong it is until it is in hot water. Biotechnologist David Leung finds ways to make plants solve environmental issues.
Biotechnologist David Leung finds ways to make plants solve environmental issues.
A medical marijuana pioneer who uses his legal background to address marijuana policy reform as both an attorney and lobbyist, Brady Cobb cultivated his passion for the industry to found One Plant (formerly 3 Boys Farm, LLC) in October of 2018. The publicly-held One Plant, is a boutique-style medical marijuana company and that holds one of the fourteen medical marijuana treatment center (MMTC) licenses in the State of Florida. In building One Plant, Brady and his team of authentic cannabis enthusiasts and experienced industry insiders took a much different, and harder, path than its competitors, namely instead of focusing on opening up retail stores, they focused on building out and scaling up their cultivation facilities. COVID-19 initially forced Spartech’s Paulding Ohio plant to reduce its workforce by 65%. When a new product was requested this plant got fired up with a plant conversion and a new process. It is now on the path of 40% employment growth and one of their best years ever. This week on Make It Right […]

So how do we go about teaching whilst lessening the grip of authority and control - thereby empowering the individual to be their own authority, to embrace their own experience and to develop a relationship with a wild plant as commonplace as a dandelion. We are talking with Robin Harford, the man behind EatWeeds and author many foraging guide books, about what we can do right now to be more at home in nature and to embrace the sensory experience...

One plant manager's on going journey to manufacturing world class.
Taking a manufacturing operation to world class. One plant manager's ongoing journey.
At the recent , I ran into intriguing research from Dr. Barrie Tan, a scientist with a Ph.D in Chemistry and Biochemistry. For the last 35 years, Barrie has immersed himself in the world of Vitamin E (particularly from ) and is considered one of the world’s foremost experts credited with discovering a molecule called "tocotrienol" from three major natural sources: -Palm: from his native Malaysia... -Rice: at the invitation of the Prince of Thailand... -Annatto: chance finding while in Ecuador searching for lutein... It turned out that palm and rice lacked the potency as they contain too much tocopherol, so Barrie moved his research interest away briefly from tocotrienol, when by serendipity he found the best-in-class tocotrienol in the annatto plant from the Amazon. Since then, Barrie’s relationship with annatto has spanned 20 years. Barrie has worked with the US Armed Forces on using tocotrienol on “radiation countermeasures” and pioneered the science behind the annatto working with the leading scientists in the world to prove the multiple benefits of tocotrienol. Meanwhile, everyone (lay folk and nutritionist) is languishing with the lack-luster non-performing tocopherol, which Barrie calls the“wrong way to E.” Most tocopherol trials failed and did not deliver. But in multiple clinical trials spanning chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteopenia, and inflammation, tocotrienol from annatto has proven clinical benefits. Barrie is currently working on multiple cancer trials after preliminary success with end-stage patients. This is because not all forms of Vitamin E are created equal... ...Vitamin E is not a single nutrient, but rather a complex made up of 8 distinct compounds: 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols. These components have slightly different chemical structures, and these differences impart unique properties that influence their biochemical functions and their effects in the body. Most conventional supplements are typically rich in tocopherols—alpha-tocopherol, in particular—but the tocotrienol fractions have unique effects across a variety of tissues that make them desirable to supplement on their own, without tocopherols. Tocotrienols, especially delta-tocotrienol as sourced from the annatto plant (bixa orellana), have shown impressive effects in supporting overall health. Tocotrienols are associated with significantly positive effects on cardiovascular health, particularly with regard to influencing healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They may also be beneficial for a healthy inflammatory response, an important asset since chronic inflammation is a factor in damage to the cardiovascular system. Having a positive influence on lipids (fats in the blood), tocotrienols may be beneficial for those with a buildup of fat in the liver, as well as those who need help managing blood sugar and insulin levels. Clinical research also suggests tocotrienols may be a valuable addition to the supplement regimens of those who need nutritional support for strong, healthy bones. Here is a recent remark of : “The health benefits realized by annatto tocotrienol go beyond that of any other nutrient I know. It’s the one supplement I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island! This is a change for me as after 35 years in this industry, my top desert island supplements have switched between magnesium and fish oil and now it stands firmly as annatto tocotrienol alone. A minimum of 150 mg per day is a must for every adult alive.” Apart from tocotrienol, Barrie discovered and has extracted the first-in-class geranylgeraniol (GG), also from the annatto plant. GG has benefits as 1) testosterone and progesterone booster; 2) pain alleviation and; 3) sarcopenia, myopathy and muscle building from this endogenous nutrient. GG is the last common step between plant and mammal (has huge implications), and may possibly be the last frontier in anti-aging nutrients. Here are Dr. Tan’s two anti-aging bottom-line nutrients: tocotrienol (exogenous) will work from outside-in, and geranylgeraniol (endogenous) will work from inside-out. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Tan discovered Annatto and became interested in Vitamin E...9:05 Began while an assistant prof at U of Mass in Amherst Palm oil in his native Malaysia is orange; is bleached out when it's processed Received grant from Malaysian government to research Research process on palm oil: Remove all fats and oil Remove all kerosene colors (orange) 25% of what was left was alpha-tocopherol, the most common variant of Vitamin E Remainder was tocotrienol Led to research on different forms of lung cancer (stopped soon after) Prince of Thailand hired him to research Buddhists don't like anything mitochondrial related Wanted plant-derived, not animal-derived research Most beneficial results came from rice bran oil (contained tocotrienol) Research funding slowed due to a slow economy in 1987 Needed a break in 1998 from studying tocotrienol; this led to studying treating macular degeneration Vitamin E is made up 8 different compounds 4 of them are tocopherols; 4 are tocotrienols The most common are tocopherols, particularly alpha-tocopherols Tocotrienols are less common, and is the locus of Dr. Tan's research Research on the efficacy of Vitamin E as it pertains to exercise was primarily done on tocopherols Vitamin E was discovered in 1922 at Berkeley Was extracted from spinach Assisted in bringing fetus to full-term Alpha-tocopherol is the "currency" of Vitamin E; all other strains (delta, gamma tocopherol) is converted into alpha during processing Even "all-natural" alpha-tocopherol is partly synthetic How to undo the damage from an alpha-tocopherol heavy supplement: Best thing is to stop taking alpha-tocopherol supplement Ideal intake of alpha-tocopherol is 15 mg per day, derived from natural foods If you didn't get all that, get this... A Vitamin E supplement is not derived from what we would find in nature. It is only a few strands of tocopherol, mostly alpha-tocopherol. The original use of alpha-tocopherol has long outlived its purpose. Dr. Tan advocates for the other strands, particularly tocotrienols for humans to derive the full benefits of Vitamin E. -The major differences between alpha-tocopherols and tocotrienols...30:55 Tri = 3; E = double bond Tocopherol has a head with an OH group; tail is saturated Tocotrienol tail has 3 double bonds, so it is unsaturated; head is smaller than tocopherol is the low-hanging fruit for our body to be oxidized is a powerful singlet antioxidant (efficacious in an environment that is oxygen-deficient) >90% of antioxidants in the phospholipid cells are Vitamin E molecules Remaining ~10% are hydro carbon caratonoids Beta carotene and and lycopene contain nothing else than hydrogen and carbon 1995 study by Dr. Lester Packer of UC Berkeley: Used to compare alpha-tocopherol and tocotrienol Concluded that both capture free radicals, to protect the lipid from oxidation However, tocotrienol is 50 times more effective in protecting the cell Comparison: Tocopherol is like municipal police within a small jurisdiction; tocotrienol is like a state trooper with far larger jurisdiction Tocotrienol recruits to cancer cells 10X more than tocopherol Critics say that only alpha-tocopherol is found in the blood; therefore all advocacy for tocotrienol is moot Only alpha-tocopherol has a "transport protein", which chaperones a particular molecule to a site of action The transport protein ensures the conservation of alpha-tocopherol (which is why supplementation is bad news) -Dr. Tan's discovery of the amazing Annatto plant while living in South America...43:20 Went to find lutein and zeaxanthin Discovered the while searching for marigold flowers in Brazil It was nicknamed the "lipstick plant" due to its intense red color on the inside South Americans called it "achuite"; is used as a food coloring Dr. Tan recognized the Annatto to be a caratenoid: Carotene in nature has to be protected by something due to its instability (plants changing color in the spring) Because the Annatto did not change color, he realized it was a potentially powerful antioxidant Biggest surprise of his research: Did not contain polyphenols, nor any type of tocopherol. It contained primarily delta-tocotrienol, which had been shown to be the most potent form of Vitamin E. The plant is naturally free of any type of tocopherol -How the Annatto plant is used to treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)...52:30 NAFLD is the new name for "metabolic syndrome" 20% of youth, and 40% of adults in America are obese 3 of 5 risk markers: Elevated triglycerides Reduced HDL Increased weight circumference 80-100 million Americans have NAFLD in some form The liver is very intolerant of fat Symptoms resemble those of alcoholics, hence the name "non-alcoholic" Notable data from Dr. Tan's study: Gave people 600 mg of tocotrienol Vitamin E; 300 mg twice daily 70 patients; double blind; placebo controlled Did at the beginning, 3 months after, 6 months after 3 months: lost average 10 pounds 6 months: lost average 17 pounds Waist circumference dropped 3 cm Use caution when purchasing products using the words "liver support" in its packaging -The other compound Dr. Tan found in the Annatto plant in addition to tocotrienols...1:03:10 GG: geraniol geranial It's an endogenous nutrient, naturally produced by the human body Helps with the synthesis of testosterone Older folks take it, not for the sex drive, but to have zest for life Required for the synthesis of caratenoid GG is a prerequisite for the synthesis of CoQ10 GG is currently in development; not currently on the market Its use as a pain management tool is complimentary, but not similar to, CBD -And much more! When the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, the internet will explode with searches for the best diets, which yield all kinds of good, bad, and absurd advice for getting healthy and fit. Vegetarians duke it out with Paleo people, macrobiotics argue with raw foodists, and the cycle goes on and on with no obvious winner. Even with the best intentions, 92 to 98 percent of diets fail in the long term, and by Valentine's Day, most people have abandoned their resolutions for the eating habits they've always had. So what's a person to do? Well, what do you want to do? What will be important to you in the coming year when it comes to your diet? Food is complex and deeply personal. It's a question of culture, tradition, environmental concerns, ethical questions, and socioeconomic status. Over the years, I've become much less interested in what to eat and more obsessed with how to eat. I've seen people eat and live well on all kinds of diets—and no diet at all. On this week's podcast, you'll meet actor, activist, and plant-based advocate Suzy Amis Cameron, who endorses a very moderate ‘one plant-based meal a day' approach. Whether you're a hardcore meat eater or a die-hard veg-head, it's valuable to experiment, reevaluate your assumptions, and find a balanced diet that works for you. Listen & Learn: How Suzy founded MUSE, the only solar-powered, organic, plant-based school Why hope is not a strategy How our current food system is broken (by anyone's standards) How a move away from animal agriculture seems inevitable Why a ‘one meal a day' approach can be an interesting way to experiment with new diets and foods Links & Resources: MUSE School Suzy's site Link to Suzy's book ABOUT THE HOST Suzy Amis Cameron is an environmental advocate, the mother of five, and the author of OMD: The Simple, Plant-Based Program to Save Your Health, Save Your Waistline, and Save the Planet. She is also a founder of Plant Power Task Force and a number of other environmental and ethical organizations. In 2005, she founded MUSE School, a 100 percent solar-powered, zero-waste school with an organic, plant-based lunch program, in Calabasas, California. Suzy has produced documentaries and serves on several nonprofit boards. As an actor, she has been featured in more than 25 films, including The Usual Suspects and Titanic. Got Questions? IN THIS EPISODE: It's the number one question that everyone asks when the weather starts to get cold and people around them start to get sick. This question is a bit more complex that one might think. What's the right answer? The only way to make a decision on something so difficult is to talk to a doctor who has a background in both Eastern and Western medicine and my favorite doctor like that is Dr. Pulde. Not only is she an amazing mom, but also a very well-known plant-based champion, Whole Foods Market medical expert, award-winning author and private practice medical doctor. I hope you enjoy listening and learning as much as I did doing this interview. Enjoy! I loved this episode. One thing we talked about with our group programs and with all of our clients is life is constantly happening for us in perfect timing. When we can step out of that victim mentality of "Life is happening to me" and and "Life is happening for me" it shifts our emotionality and we're able to see and experience more miracles and so we talked a lot about this. Jessica opens up about her condition, endometriosis and how it's given her awareness of her body. By going plant based, she has managed and eliminated many of her symptoms. We talk about the impact of food and our bodies from an internal approach, how it affects our menstrual cycles and Jessica takes us through a body scan practice to check in which was super cool. About Jessica Jessica Murnane is the creator of the One Part Plant movement (she's working to get everyone on this planet to eat one plant-based meal each day), host of the One Part Podcast, and wellness advocate (she works to raise awareness for endometriosis). Jessica has contributed to and appeared in countless magazines and websites, including Mind Body Green, Goop, The Coveteur, Food 52, PopSugar, and Chalkboard Magazine and has spoken at Apple, Taste Talks, and Wanderlust. Inside this episode, Jessica shares How Jessica created a cookbook from experimenting with food. Living with endometriosis and managing the symptoms. How we can check in with our body and use our pain as a teacher. What you'll hear: 8:00-How food affects our menstrual cycles. 21:00- What Endometriosis has taught Jessica about her body. 26:08- Living with body dysmorphia and being open to how our bodies change. 40:00- A body scan practice to connect with the different sensations we feel. Today, we have one of those doctors that are fighting the good fight, my friends. Dr. Joel Kahn is no stranger to the plant-based world. As a vegan himself for close to forty years, Dr. Kahn is not only talking the talk, but also walking the walk….literally….he wrote an entire book walking on a treadmill. It was wonderful to talk to him because you can hear not only how passionate he is about this movement, but also how he diligently keeps up with the latest scientific and medical research showing that eating a whole food, plant-based diet is the way to go. You might recognize him from his appearance in "What The Health," which is a mega popular documentary on Netflix right now if you didn’t already know. He is the author of "The Whole Heart Solution" and many other books and refers to himself as a heart attack prevention specialist...ladies and gentlemen, my conversation with Dr. Joel Kahn.
