"It's Love - not Santa Claus". Boy Meets Girl and things go awry. Classic. 500 Days of Summer is a humorous look at a Hopeless Romantic. It's got heavy moments easily offset by the laughs provided along with great opportunities for reflection. It's Painful but Palatable. It asks us to examine the characters and who is really at fault while we also examine ourselves because undoubtedly we identify with certain characters at certain moments. It's divisive yet super fun. "You can't assign cosmic significance to an everyday life event." Or can you? *Slight spoilers*. (REVIEW - WEEK 5, YEAR 5) . Pat Cassels did return for our annual Summer Movie Review... but it was lost due to technical blipblaps. So, instead, we rewatched Top Gun Maverick and tried to figure out what made it work. You can sync up and watch Top Gun Maverick with us, but we don't expect anyone to actually do that. If you still want to, and we are warning you it's really not something you need to do, there's a clear signal when you need to press play. Links LiesGame.com (updated with new categories!) Movie Review: Ferris Bueller's Day off is the tale of one high school hero who truly had it all; looks, brains, money, friends, a smokin' hot girlfriend, popularity, style, and panache. However, despite all of that he still lacked the two things that he needed most....a day off, and a car! This is the tale of Ferris Bueller, the 4th wall breaking, Ferrari stealing, John Hughes immortal movie hit of 1986. Like nearly every other John Hughes tale the setting of the story was the Chicago suburbs! The Ferrari in the film is supposed to be a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California. The insert shots of emblems and wheels really are of the genuine article, but absolutely everything else was a faker-oo Modena Spyder replica (three of them, actually). Ferrari was none too happy with this movie and sued Modena out of business. Most reports show that the Ford powered replicas were ham-fisted together, ran poorly, and broke down often. In fact our man Ryan Brutt (The Auto Archaeologist) joined in to share the tales of the man that keep the fake Ferrari's running during the movie filming; his dad! 10 Corndogs. If it's the end of the world, or the end of a way of life, or even just the end of a really bad day, mightn't a person turn toward God? But that option doesn't present itself in most modern stories. Hosts Timothy Deal and Nick Hayden examine the unconscious naturalism in many of today's most popular plots and examine how the absence of a supernatural worldview affects such stories. Then, in the second half, they present their annual Summer Movie Review, including Jungle Cruise, Free Guy, F9, Luca, Black Widow, and, of course, Shang-Chi. So, if you've ever felt we didn't need midichlorians to explain the Force, or wondered why post-apocalyptic worlds don't discuss an increase in (non-cultic) belief in God, you've come to the right podcast. Listen in to episode 122 of Derailed Trains of Thought, your premiere podcast on storytelling for the creator and the consumer.
It's cold outside, so hosts Jessica Kwazz (@JessKwazz) and Brandon M. Prosek (@TheProze) try to warm up finally getting around to their Summer Movie Review from 2019. ***This episode has a Spoiler Section*** The first (38) minutes of our Get Out Oscar Sprint Profile are spoiler free, the spoiler music plays, and then we give Get Out our full review. Get Out - Oscar Sprint Profile Non-Spoiler Review Cast & Crew First - Jordan Peel Bio - 2:28 Daniel Kaluuya Bio - 6:00 Production Profile: Movie Specs & Awards Update - 13:48 Review of Production Values - 21:53 Performances - 29:09 Spoiler Music - 37:38 Spoiler-Filled Review Mike No 1’s Best Scene (an All Timer) - 39:34 A Review of That Ending - 42:38 Worst Scenes - 50:32 Grades - 56:59 Overflow of Final Thoughts & Thank You’s for listening - 58:21 This is our Oscar Sprint Profile for Get Out, directed by Jordan Peele and starring Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams. Our very first episode, the Summer Movie Review included nearly 20 minutes on this movie, where we gushed over the horror comedy degree of difficulty and the great Daniel Kaluuya performance quite a bit more. So we do manage to cover mostly new ground here. Some of our best work, we hope/we think. Let us know. As always, we love hearing from you on social media. We’re on Facebook, gmail, instagram, and of course - Twitter where we will be LIVE TWEETING every movie event for the foreseeable future. We’re also super proud that we correctly projected Get Out’s esteemed award season months earlier, before it was cool and the world hailed it as a triumph. So we immediately debate why the title has no punctuation. Consider the hot stove question of the millennium ANSWERED. You’re welcome. Our bio of Jordan Peele covers his hilarious resume, and we’re proud to have a ton of quotes and production stories about this incredible directorial debut throughout the episode. The Daniel Kaluuya bio begins with an Also Mike blooper that we just had to leave in, proving once and for all that I suck at impressions... of robots. (I apologize for nothing.) We bio Kaluuya, and Mike No. 1 gives you the specs on the movie, including release dates, box office, critical reception, and an awards season update. Our expectations for the film dive right into our non-spoiler review with a lot of optimism regarding the future of the industry. The review moves into the production values with more nuggets from the film’s backstory, and we read between the lines of some of the critical acclaim. The review of the performances embraces the comedy and satire portrayed by the supporting cast, and we do some more gushing over Daniel Kaluuya’s break out role, hoping he gets the nod at the end of the day. Mike No. 1 teases his worst scene involving the Caleb Landry Jones character, and Also Mike loves how this is a horror movie filled with smart characters that have a ton of agency, a refreshing turn for the genre. Big surprise, we give this one a MUST WATCH review (it’s currently on HBO On Demand...FYI). The Spoiler Music plays, you dance, and we dive right into weird mental pictures, smoochy sound effects, and Dad Jokes because we’re us. Mike No. 1’s best scene is his favorite on the year and an all timer for fans of the genre. Then we talk about THAT ending and break it down with lots of high fiving over all the Chekhov’s gun moments. We gush over all the delicious details that were conveyed with relish by Peele’s masterful writing and direction, the cast’s brilliant performances, and we set-up your upcoming rewatch for this baby ASA-f’ing-P. We nitpick with our worst scenes, we try to piece together some more of the plot’s intricacies that’ll push us all to continue to study this film, and we give our final grades. Stay tuned as we LIVE TWEET these upcoming award shows, including 1/13’s Critics Choice Awards on the CW at 8pm EST!
