It's been a whirlwind news cycle here in Canada, in the wake of President Donald Trump imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has now announced that these tariffs are on hold for 30 days, as Canada implements its 1.3-billion-dollar border strategy, aimed at stopping the flow of fentanyl. The American tariffs have come as a surprise for many in this country. But our guest on today's program says they have, in fact, been in the making for some time.Jeff Rubin is a Canadian economist, bestselling author, and a former chief economist and chief strategist for CIBC World Markets. Electronic sports, or esports, has seen a remarkable spike in popularity over the years, with a recent study from Pew Research finding that 90% of teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 play video games. Seeking to both capitalize on the tremendous popularity of esports and continue to innovate, expand career options in emerging fields and deliver academic programs that meet its students' needs, Syracuse University will soon begin offering a new, first-of-its-kind degree program focused on esports. The program taps into the rapidly growing, multibillion-dollar esports industry, serving as a continuation of the work already happening on campus. Jeff Rubin, special advisor to the chancellor on esports and digital transformation, Olivia Stomski, professor of practice of television, radio and film and director of the Newhouse Sports Media Center, and Chris Hanson, associate professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences, were on the University-wide task force charged with conducting the benchmarking that led to the creation of the esports program. Rubin, Stomski and Hanson reveal why the time was right for Syracuse University to add an esports degree program, share how the new academic offering will position students for success once they graduate, explain the research that went into creating this program and discuss the rapid growth of esports on campus.

Visit the Enabled Disabled website to share your thoughts and stories: https://www.enableddisabled.com/share My name is Jeff Rubin. I have been a teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition for almost forty years, which has served as my North Star through some very difficult times. Unconditional Healing came about through my personal journey with a progressive degenerative illness, which first surfaced all the way back in 1999. Even after visiting dozens of health practitioners, and undergoing countless tests, I was unable to secure a firm diagnosis, never mind a cure. In 2006, inspired by my own experiences of working with my illness, and by my study of various teachings on working with illness and pain, I developed a program entitled "Unconditional Healing: Embracing Illness and Adversity and Discovering One's True Self. The workshop presented bedrock principles of unconditional health and well-being and a unique way of working with painful situations that reduced one's suffering, fears, and feelings of helplessness immensely. In addition, the ability to meet with others in an open and frank forum was a game-changer for me, soothing my feelings of isolation. The workshop was well received, and I have since offered it at a variety of places around the country. I also learned that this approach could help people not only to cope, but even to thrive while undergoing immense difficulties. In response to the workshops, and the need for ongoing support for people who were struggling, I established group meetings called Healing Circles. Healing Circles are support groups that meet regularly in a safe confidential environment for those wishing to be acknowledged and heard without judgment. Unlike other support groups that form around a specific malady or illness, Healing Circles coalesce around a desire to not only acknowledge and support each other through tough times, but to use our difficulties to transform ourselves and find our deepest self. We ask - what can I learn from my pain and how can I use it to become gentler, wiser, and more resilient? Healing Circles are now operating in Manhattan and Los Angeles, Please read more about the Healing Circles here. While my journey has been difficult for me and for those that I love, I now see it as a blessing, bringing a sense of focus and urgency to my life, along with the opportunity to share what I have learned and experienced. It was with that motivation that I created this website to reach a broader audience looking for support, community and resources to help unlock their own storehouse of resiliency and confidence in the face of difficulties. I hope you will find a measure of solace, support and wisdom from the various offerings within, and from studying and practicing together as a community. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/enableddisabled/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enableddisabled/support

Can overconfidence harm you? Despite popular belief, psychologists and experts state that overconfidence can also lead to failure. Avoiding a different perspective can limit your judgment. How much confidence is good? How do you make sure you're not underconfident?Don Moore, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Berkeley Haas talks about his book called Perfectly Confident: How To Calibrate Your Decisions Wisely. Together with host Greg, they unpack ways people can weigh their options properly. They cover topics like Confirmation Bias, the story of Jeff Rubin, and other tips on spotting overconfidence signals. Make sure to listen to the episode as he shares stories about the Good Judgment Project where they forecast and weigh in on political and diplomatic events based on understanding people's perspectives. If you're looking for a book that'll guide the individual and team decision-making process, this one's definitely a great read!Episode Quotes:On confirmation bias, causing us to miss signals that might affect our success:“If we think about it in a Bayesian framework, one way that a lot of economists have modeled overconfidence is too tight a prior. That is we're too sure that our noisy private signal is accurate and underestimate the error and noise. That's built into it as a product of our idiosyncratic history or excessive faith in our intuitive judgment. You can think of confirmation bias as underweighting the informational value and evidence that we encounter.”When does overconfidence benefit us? "The public benefits of some circumstances in which overconfidence can lead to persistence. In excess of what expected value calculations might justify doesn't then imply everyone should be overconfident. We can be grateful to those who make sacrifices at their own expense without wanting to follow suit."How can we prevent hierarchical decisions to affect the culture of diversity in the workplace? “Trying to extract information from the crowd before the boss weighs in with his or her opinion. So one simple way to do that is before a meeting where you have to come to some important decision, you force everybody to vote to pre-commit or to identify their preferred list of candidates or outcome options or whatever it is that you're talking about.”Show Links:Order Book - Perfectly Confident: How To Calibrate Your DecisionsThe Good Judgment ProjectOther Books Mentioned:Superforecasting The Art and Science of PredictionThinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decision When You Don't Have All the Facts

Greetings, congenial Herle Burly-ites ... top of the podcast to you!Jeff Rubin is our guest for Part 1 of this episode. Jeff is the #1 best-selling author of “Why Your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller” and the former Chief Economist for CIBC World Markets. We are going to talk about his new book “The Expendables”, and his argument that the middle class got nothing out of globalization ... except the bill. And how the blowback to all of that is changing the developed world.Part 2 of the pod, is the comms and campaign gurus you've grown to LOAVTH – which is a brand new word I just invented that combines LOATH and LOVE. It's a complicated feeling, I know ... our Political Panel with Jenni Byrne and Scott Reid! We'll pick up on my discussion with Jeff. We'll continue to talk about government response to the 2nd wave of the pandemic and growing COVID comms confusion. We'll tell some stories of spouses and family members “contributing” – and I'm doing the air quotes fingers right now – to campaign strategy. And we'll debut a new segment near the end of the Panel we call, “HEY YOU!” ... Here's how “HEY YOU” works: each of us will throw a single question out into the social media ether ... for a politician or public figure. Will it be entertaining? Yeah, I'm pretty sure it will. Will somebody take the bait and give us an answer? We'll see. Will somebody else create a burner account, and masquerade as that public figure to try to fake us out? Seems like a lot of work, but sure. Go for it. It used to be that supply and demand applied to workers and wages within Canada. But globalization has changed that, argues economist Jeff Rubin. When the whole world is your market, there is never a dearth of workers willing to do the same job for less money. On the Agenda, he lays out his arguments for how free trade ruined the middle class, the topic of his new book, "The Expendables: How the Middle Class Got Screwed by Globalization."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's first time guest is Jeff Rubin, who was the Chief Economist at CIBC World Markets (where he worked for over 20 years). He has just released a new book: The Expendables: How the Middle Class Got Screwed by Globalization, where he says that the decline in permanent, well paying full time jobs is a direct result of free trade agreements that transferred jobs to lower wage countries, leaving factories in Canada idle. On today's show Jeff Rubin argues that globalization allows the rich to get richer, and that leads to increasing inequality, and that leads to high debt levels for the average Canadian. Is there a solution? We discuss that and a lot more on today's show. Consumers pay less, and corporate profits are higher; what's the problem? 5:55 Does outsourcing lead to lower wages, lower interest rates, and lower inflation? 7:40 How are low wages tied to consumer debt? 9:50 Interest rates are very low, so does it matter that governments have high deficits? 11:18 How does globalization lead to more middle class debt? 13:43 Does globalization lead to speculative bubbles (like the stock market and the housing bubble)? 15:51 Do you agree or disagree with David Ricardo's Theory of Comparative Advantage? Are we not better off if we do what we are best at? 18:48 With globalization we have more exposure to other cultures; does that increase the chances for world peace? Is that not an upside of globalization? 20:14 What are the solutions to the problems caused by globalization? 21:27 Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders both have the same trade policy 23:39 Not being able to get N95 masks was a big problem, because we didn't produce them in Canada. Do you expect in the future to see more manufacturing returning to Canada? 27:15 Contrary to popular belief, why do you not think we have a progressive tax system? 29:10 But if we had a more progressive tax system, would that not lead to money and jobs and wealthy people leaving the country, making our economic situation even worse? 33:00 Closing comments: advice for the average Canadian hurt by globalization.

We tend to marginalize and disregard older adults, thinking they no longer can contribute to our lives or society in any purposeful or meaningful way, especially those older adults who no longer participate in the workforce as we know it. But in doing so, we are ignoring the valuable resource, legacies, stories, the witness to history that can only be captured through the personal experiences by those who lived them. Jeff Rubin has set out to capture those experiences, stories, and words of wisdom. In doing so, he's undertaken the important work of bridging the generation gap, finding out that at both the younger and upper range of the age spectrums, there is a clarity and wisdom to be shared and appreciated. His innovative approach to developing intergenerational wisdom circles could go a long way in creating an understanding of the value our older adults bring to our families and to our community at large. A lifelong advocate, Jeff brings his own wisdom to the conversation.
