In this week's episode, we highlight the impactful career of actor Daniel Kaluuya. In his young career, Kaluuya has delivered several performances that will be cemented in the cinematic lore. We start with the under-seen, under-appreciated film Judas and the Black Messiah, in which Daniel Kaluuya plays activist and Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton. Second, Kaluuya stars in Jordan Peele's game-changing, modern classic Get Out. Finally, Kaluuya displays his acting and producing chops in the 2019 film Queen & Slim.Let us know what you think of these films and your favorite Daniel Kaluuya performance!❗️SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE ❗️Support the showSign up for our Patreon for exclusive Bonus Content.Follow the podcast on Instagram @gimmethreepodcastYou can keep up with Bella on Instagram @portraitofacinephile or Letterboxd You can keep up with Nick: on Instagram @nicholasybarra, on Twitter (X) @nicholaspybarra, or on LetterboxdShout out to contributor and producer Sonja Mereu. Kelsi and Trey deep dive Get Out, Jordan Peele's groundbreaking horror debut that redefined the genre with its social commentary and eerie atmosphere. They explore the film's narrative of Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a young Black man navigating the hidden dangers within his white girlfriend's family, uncovering a chilling secret that speaks to the insidious nature of neoliberal post-racial fantasies. With standout performances from Kaluuya, Allison Williams, and Lil Rel Howery, Get Out merges suspense with a darkly funny satire, creating a horror experience that is as thought-provoking as it is terrifying. We discuss Peele's direction and how his unique approach has cemented Get Out as a cultural artifact, sparking conversations about representation, the horror genre, and Peele's timeless metaphor the "Sunken Place." This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss the 2023 film, "The Kitchen." The film takes place in a dystopian future London where all social housing has been eliminated, Izi and Benji fight to navigate the world as residents of The Kitchen, a community that refuses to abandon their home. The concepts of community and responsibility is reinforced throughout.
Not many actors-turned-filmmakers will swing for the fences in such a big way with their directorial debuts as Daniel Kaluuya has done with “The Kitchen.” Instead of making some small indie drama, Kaluuya, alongside co-director Kibwe Tavares, decided to go with a full dystopian sci-fi drama. But you better believe this is a film filled with a ton of heart at its core. And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, Kaluuya, alongside lead actor Kane Robinson, stop by to talk about “The Kitchen.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

While Queen & Slim is one of my favorite movies, I still have yet understood what the real message was? I am unsure what the takeaway of a bad situation going more wrong does for the viewer. Lena Waithe is an incredible writer. Were the really innocent? Is killing a racist cop in self defense really self defense? Is fleeing the scene the best way to prove your innocence? This week, Gavia and Morgan finally get to talk about Jordan Peele's third film, the UFO spectacular "Nope." The film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Kiki Palmer as siblings who own a horse ranch... and discover there's a strange object lurking above their valley. Topics include Peele's increasingly ambitious career, this film's complex themes, dazzling performances from Palmer and Kaluuya, and more.
Nope is a 2022 American science fiction horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Jordan Peele under his Monkeypaw Productions banner. Starring Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, and Brandon Perea, it follows two ranch-owning siblings who attempt to capture evidence of an UFO. Peele officially announced his then-untitled third directorial film in November 2020. Palmer and Kaluuya joined in February 2021, with Yeun being cast the next month, and Peele revealed the title in July 2021. Filming took place during fall 2021 in northern Los Angeles county, wrapping in November. The title was rumored to be an acronym for "Not of Planet Earth" or "Not Our Planet Earth" based on the movie poster, but Peele later revealed that the title refers to the reaction he hoped to elicit from audiences. Nope premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on July 18, 2022, and was wide-released in the United States four days later by Universal Pictures. It has grossed over $116 million on a $68 million budget, and received praise for its ambition, performances, cinematography, and direction, although the screenplay polarized critics. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

This week, Matt and Cody see something truly out of this world with Jordan Peele's latest outing, Nope! They "peel" back the layers by analyzing the themes, scares, and cultural impact of the film, while still flapping their gums about their usual nonsense like two inflatable tube men along the side of a dusty trail. They give their props, like a good crew person would, to the now legendary Peele, Kaluuya, Palmer, and the already legendary Keith David. Do they find the key to success or is that key just stuck in a horse's ass? Only by listening can you find out!Peak out from behind the clouds or slates of a barn wall and giddy up over to your two favorite ranch hands as they dig deep on being exceptional (like they would know), floating shoes, one-eyed purple people eaters, and so much more! Thanks for listening! Welcome friends and neighbors to another episode of the Reel Film Nerds podcast. Today Mike and Matt chat about Jordan Peele's latest thriller Nope starring Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun. Off topics include a new Blu-ray giveaway, Mike is secretly 0069, and sky Jaws. Jordan Peele's third film Nope is an unexpected sci-fi thriller that caught both of your hosts off guard. It is a great original story that takes almost half the runtime to get on its feet but when it does man is it good! The acting especially by Kaluuya and Palmer is excellent. They play completely opposite personality types but have wonderful chemistry as brother and sister in the film. The cinematography is decent but the night scenes are where Nope is in a class of its own. It is very difficult to film in the dark and make it look good and this movie does it better than just about anyone. Matt and Mike both agree this is a must see flick in the theaters. They both award Nope 4.5 out of 5 Reels. For next week we hit the streaming services to check out a Netflix Original spy thriller The Gray Man starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week! Filmmaker Jordan Peele has released the official trailer for his highly-anticipated, Universal Pictures film NOPE. The chiller, starring Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, and Steven Yeun was announced in July 2021. The award-winning director, who also wrote and produced the movie, does not give away too much in the short video. However, the trailer introduces the characters to audiences for the first time. Kaluuya and Palmer lead as caretakers at a horse ranch, where they hope to make it big in Hollywood as professional handlers. Suddenly, the desert farm and bright skies are taken over by dark clouds and a mysterious force that impacts animal and human behavior. “It's just the kinda thing that's serendipitous,” Palmer said of working with Peele during an April 2021 interview with Refinery29. “Things are aligned. It's like the things you wish for actually coming to fruition.” According to Rolling Stone, Universal Pictures described NOPE as telling the story of “residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery” and Peele “reimagines the summer movie with a new pop nightmare.” NOPE also features Barbie Ferreira, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott and is set to be released in theaters on July 22, 2022. Muziek van Mark Isham en Craig Harris voor de film Judas and the black messiah, een drama van Shaka King. Met o.a. Daniel Kaluuya. 1. The Inflated Tear - Opening (Mark Isham) 0'45” 3. Judas and the Black Messiah is a 2021 American biographical drama film about the betrayal of Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago, at the hands of William O'Neal (played by Lakeith Stanfield), an FBI informant. Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Lil Rel Howery, Algee Smith, Dominique Thorne, and Martin Sheen also star. The film is directed and produced by Shaka King, who wrote the screenplay with Will Berson, based on a story by the pair and Kenny and Keith Lucas. A Fred Hampton biopic had been in the works for several years, with both the Lucas brothers and Will Berson writing and shopping screenplays individually since 2014. Berson's version almost got made with F. Gary Gray directing, but, when that fell through, King was hired to direct. The cast joined in 2019, with the blessings of Hampton's family, with filming taking place that fall in Ohio. Judas and the Black Messiah premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on February 1, 2021, and was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on February 12, simultaneously in theaters and digitally on HBO Max. The film was lauded by critics, who praised King's direction, the performances (particularly Kaluuya's and Stanfield's), and its timely themes. The film earned six Oscar nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Stanfield, and won Best Supporting Actor for Kaluuya and Best Original Song ("Fight for You"). For his performance, Kaluuya also won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and BAFTA Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message
The brothers recorded this review of Shaka King's 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah a few months before Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield were up for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (which Kaluuya won, but Stanfield should also have gotten an award). The brothers briefly discuss the actors' performances, casting, and writing, but mostly they focus on the film's contribution to Hollywood's long history of depicting Black love and Black radicalism, as well as the Black Panthers' historical role in politically organizing Black street organizations, the force of Black resistance to police murder, and the police infiltration of and war on the Black liberation movement. The brothers also talk about the building of Black leadership capacity through political education and the importance of preparing for self-defense, intelligence, and counter-intelligence capacities in Black movements. NOTE: The brothers urge people to read Native American Studies scholar Ward Churchill and writer Jim Vander Wall's book Agents of Repression: The FBI's Secret Wars against the Black Panther Party and the American Indian Movement and check out episode #12 of this podcast, in which the brothers discussed that book.
It's hard to believe but this is the first, and only, Oscar podcast I've done for this extended and wild Oscar season. I've guested on quite a few in recents months but had opted out of doing my own during this period. That ends today as I am joined by two young upstarts in the Oscar prediction community who've really blown up in the last couple of years: The Oscar Expert (Cole) and Brother Bro (Justin). I've had the pleasure of being a guest on their show twice and it was time I returned the favor. In this podcast, which was also recorded as a video (see below), the three of us go over what an exceptional year its been and we finally near the big finale of the 93rd Academy Awards. We address the last-minute frontrunner hit pieces that fell at Nomadland's feet, take on every single category in depth and make our cases in some of the tough categories like Best Actress, which I saved until just before Best Picture. You can find The Oscar Expert on his popular YouTube channel (here) where he and Brother Bro have dropped their final Oscar predictions, which were recorded before this podcast. You can also find them on Twitter @expert_oscar and @withbrotherbro. This podcast is sponsored by the Apple Original Film Wolfwalkers, Academy Award Nominee for Best Animated Feature. This week on DMT Reviews, Sam and Jack dive into "Judas and the Black Messiah" starring Daniel Kaluuya, Lakeith Stanfield, and Jesse Plemons from writer/director Shaka King. The boys take a hard look at the Fred Hampton story and the absolute travesty of an organization the FBI is, that's right I typed that, come at me FBI! And Don't Miss This Review!
In 1969, Fred Hampton, a young leader in the Black Panther Party, was shot in his bed by Chicago police in a predawn raid. The raid was facilitated by an informant, a teen-ager by the name of William O’Neal. The half-century quest for justice by activists, lawyers, and Hampton’s family has revealed the extent of the F.B.I.’s role in what happened—all the way up to J. Edgar Hoover, who wanted to prevent the rise of what he called a “messiah” who could unify the Black community. Daniel Kaluuya, the British actor known for “Get Out” and “Black Panther,” plays Hampton in the new film “Judas and the Black Messiah.” The film follows Hampton in the last year of his life as he works to found the Rainbow Coalition, a movement that would bring together Black, Latinos, and working-class whites. Kaluuya talked with Kai Wright, the host of WNYC’s “The United States of Anxiety,” about how the F.B.I. and many whites saw Hampton’s affirmation of Black people as tantamount to terrorism.

On December 4th of 1969, Fred Hampton -- the 21-year-old chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party -- was shot dead in his sleep during a raid by Chicago police, but decades of investigation into his death revealed an even more insidious plot. Actor Daniel Kaluuya -- known for his roles in “Get Out” and “Queen & Slim” -- portrays Hampton in the new film, “Judas and the Black Messiah,” which follows Hampton’s meteoric rise through the party, a multiracial class movement and the series of betrayals that led to his untimely fall. Weeks before he won the Golden Globe award for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture,” Kaluuya joined Kai to talk about preparing for the role, the legacy of the Black Panther Party and how Hampton’s revolutionary love for his community positioned him as "an enemy of the state." A special thanks to our friends at The New Yorker Radio Hour, and particularly KalaLea, who produced the initial version of this conversation. Got to our website for extras! This week we're talking about the film Judas and the Black Messiah and the finales of The Stand and Your Honor. But first, Elaine starts talking about how she went out for a ride last week and how COVID-19 numbers are down, and before ya know it, she was in a full-blown political rant. So buckle up for that. But political outrage turned out to be a perfect segue into our first topic this week.Judas and the Black Messiah (HBO Max) is the story of the life and events leading up to Black Panther Fred Hampton's death. With knockout performances by Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield and a supporting cast including Jesse Plemons, Martin Sheen, and one of our favorite actors from The Deuce, Dominique Fishback, Judas, and the Black Messiah is a likely shoo-in at Oscar time. The real playersWe learned a lot from this film, even though we thought we knew the history. And, like we always do, after seeing a "based on a true story" movie, we dug a little deeper. Here's a side-by-side featuring the real people next to the actors who portrayed them. (see our site )What the movie doesn't tell you.In the movie, Hampton and O'Neal are played by Kaluuya and Standfield, 31 and 29 years old. Hampton was only 21 years old at the time of his death. But, what people don't know is that William O'Neal was only 17 years old when the FBI sent him in to infiltrate the Black Panthers. We think this is important and may impact how people judge O'Neal, who took his own life on MLK day after PBS aired his interview on Eyes on the Prize.Hampton's widow and son. Deborah Johnson gave birth shortly after Fred Hampton's death. She was 19 years old. She named the baby Alfred Johnson, but at the age of 10, changed his name to Fred Hampton jr. She changed her name to Akua Njeri.Njeri is still active in the civil rights movement today. Hampton Jr is Chairman of The Black Panther Party Cubs. As we mentioned on the show, Fred Jr has a Go Fund Me to help restore his father's childhood home. Check it out here.We promoted The Stand so hard on this podcast. And we try hard not to steer our listeners to anything that we didn't like ourselves. So now we find ourselves in the awkward position of having to say Oooops!! We're sorry! On the flip side, we were delighted with the Showtime limited series's finale, Your Honor. Some people are calling the finale "poetic justice." We don't exactly see it that way. Shakespearean, yes. Just, Nah! For anyone who gave a couple of episodes and gave up, we say, give it another chance. It pays off!

Jordan Peele's debut mixes horror and social commentary on race relations to impressive effect. Smashing the box office, this film has won over audiences in the States and is now screening in Australia. Peele's greatest success with this scary and fitfully very funny movie is the passion pounding away at its core. The story concerns a young man Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), whose white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) invites him home to meet her parents, avuncular well-to-do liberals played by Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener. Yet despite the kindness of Rose's family, Chris cannot escape the feeling that something is wrong. Peele's script has Chris assume at several points that the problem is his being black - and that gets to the heart of out Get Out treats of racial tension. Get Out is discussed within the context of films that have used the constraints of genre to explore social commentary - such as Starship Troopers, Children of Men, Night of the Living Dead and Idiocracy. - Emmet O'Cuana
