SFX makeup artist & creative influencer Aleena Averly joins me to discuss two films that portray dystopian futures against a backdrop of ecological collapse, Blade Runner 2049 and Elysium. We talk about how technology, AI, surveillance, inequality, and class oppression—but also pockets of heroism and sacrifice—are portrayed in both films, how the real world is racing alarmingly fast towards both futures, and why the fight to stay human in an increasingly inhuman world matters more than ever. Topics include: • Class divides and structural oppression • Immigrant scapegoating as a way to maintain class oppression • "Are you a replicant?" • AI, AI companions, and the illusion of "realness" • The erosion of empathy, humanity, and authenticy • Echoes of Philip K. Dick's ideas • Outward rebellion vs. inner awakening • Staying real and human in an increasingly unreal and inhuman world ⚠️ Spoilers: Blade Runner 2049, Elysium ✅ No Spoilers: All other works mentioned Find Aleena Averly: YouTube: @AleenaAverly https://www.youtube.com/@AleenaAverly Instagram: @aleena.averly https://www.instagram.com/aleena.averly/ Opening quote: From a 1979 interview w/ Philip K. The guest mix hit parade continues! Right on the heels of his last train mix Paul gives another train-themed set. This is one more in line with many of Paul's other train mixes in that it's main genre is berlin-school. I have been on a berlin-school bender all year so I am excited for this one. Here's what Paul says about the mix: "You're sitting on a grassy slope above the cottage, looking out across the landscape below. It's night and soft dots of light here and there indicate other houses, groups of houses, a road. In the distance you can see the black edge of a ruler, marking the gap between carriages and a bright bar of light moving left in front of it. Like happens in dreams, you are watching the scene and then you are in it, your seat tipped back, not quite asleep, you're looking out the window. It's a modern train. Gone is the classic click-click, click-click, but you can still feel the subtle rocking back and forth as the train hurtles silently forward. Under the stars. The cacophony of a station stop, made eerie in the wee hours of the morning. Or memory stirring up a previous adventure then returning you to your current tranquility." Thanks, Paul, for another excellent entry in your continuing train series. Send us a textIn this climactic finale of the Lorehaven Hearth Planar Series, Seth and Celina journey to the two opposing hearts of the multiverse — the Blessed Fields of Elysium and the Gray Waste of Hades. From the radiant meadows where the River Oceanus flows to the desolate glooms where color and hope fade away, this episode explores how Dungeons & Dragons has portrayed these realms across every edition, from 1e's foundational cosmology to 5e's Great Wheel revival.Listeners will discover:The four layers of Elysium — Amoria, Eronia, Belierin, and Thalasia — and the serene celestials who dwell there. The three glooms of Hades — Oinos, Niflheim, and Pluton — and the grim forces that harvest souls. How each edition reshaped these planes in lore and mechanics. The deep mythological roots of paradise and despair, from the Greek Elysian Fields and Hades to the Egyptian Aaru and Norse Helheim. The moral and theological echoes that resonate through these imagined afterlives. The episode closes with a reflective biblical meditation, contrasting the fleeting peace of Elysium and the hopelessness of Hades with the eternal rest promised in Christ:“Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:54–55)Join us for this final journey through the Great Wheel — a tale of light and shadow, hope and despair, and the eternal truth beyond all planes.

After a highly successful corporate career, Richard retired in his early 30s, compelled to take a stand as a corporate whistleblower in 2004 under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Representing himself in court, he exposed systemic corruption and injustice, an experience that profoundly shaped his mission to empower individuals with the tools to protect their freedom and intellectual sovereignty. Through his journey of discovery, Richard uncovered a web of systematic control mechanisms and corruption that disproportionately affect the middle and lower classes. Recognizing the need for solutions, he dedicated his life to collecting rare artifacts, evidence, and knowledge that expose these systems of control. His work focuses on equipping individuals with the intellectual self-defense, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving skills necessary to navigate and overcome these challenges. Richard believes that true freedom is built on three pillars: Non-Aggression, Physical Self-Defense, and Intellectual Self-Defense. To this end, he has created a wealth of educational media and resources to help others understand how the world really works and how to reclaim their autonomy. As the creator and host of the Grand Theft World Podcast, Richard curates and presents vital information to help break the chains of mental bondage and mind control that suppress human freedom. His podcast serves as a beacon for those seeking to understand the deeper truths of our world and take actionable steps toward liberation. Richard is also the founder of the AUTONOMY Course of Action, a premiere course at the University of Reason designed for freedom-minded individuals who want to upgrade their skills, knowledge, and access to freedom. Through AUTONOMY, he teaches intellectual self-defense and provides a framework for personal and professional growth. Additionally, he created AUTONOMY's University of Reason Library, a comprehensive resource offering critical information to empower self-learners and autodidacts. With decades of experience in the freedom movement, Richard Grove continues to inspire and educate individuals worldwide, helping them build the skills and mindset necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex and controlled world. His work is a testament to the power of knowledge, critical thinking, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

Homer's The Odyssey is one of the oldest and most enduring stories in all of civilization. Set in the aftermath of the legendary Trojan War, the great war hero Odysseus has been lost at sea for decades. As he struggles to return home, his story asks us important questions about history, memory, choice, kindness, leadership, violence, and much more. Thousands of years later, The Odyssey still matters. This episode examines books 1-5 of The Odyssey, introducing us to the main characters and overall plot. We travel to the island of Ithaca to see corrupt suitors courting Penelope, the queen of Ithaca. Her son Telemachus fights to gain news of his father, journeying to far off lands to discover that Odysseus is indeed still alive. Finally, we meet Odysseus, held captive by the beautiful but deceptive Calypso. Odysseus is longing to go home and may finally have his opportunity. This section of the podcast series analyzes themes of mortality, free will, fate and destiny, civility and hospitality, post-war trauma and grief, the tension between the world of gods and the world of men, and much more. "Satoshi Nakamoto Efsanesi" adlı bu podcast bölümünde, Bitcoin'in gizemli yaratıcısı Satoshi Nakamoto'nun kimliğinin ötesindeki derin anlamları keşfediyoruz. Kaynak

"Are you not entertained? You will be." I am Maximus Decimus Meridius, and I bring you word of a tale—of honor, betrayal, vengeance, and glory. This week, the warriors known as Three Guys and a Flick—Don, John, and Ken—enter the great arena to review Gladiator, Ridley Scott's epic saga of Rome's might and man's resolve. They speak of my rise and fall… and rise again. They will recount the treachery of Commodus, the fury of the Colosseum, and the moment a fallen general revealed his name to an emperor. The music of Zimmer will thunder. The sands will run red with insight. So gather, citizens of the empire, and bear witness to a discussion worthy of Elysium. Because what we say in this episode… echoes in eternity.
What does it mean to be a South Asian Muslim actor in the heart of Hollywood? In today's episode of your favorite podcast @jins_podcast, I sat down with the incredible Faran Tahir — Pakistani-American actor known for roles in Iron Man, Star Trek, Elysium, Scandal, and MacBeth — to explore the challenges and victories of navigating an industry still struggling with diversity and nuance. From growing up in a legendary artistic family to performing Shakespeare at Harvard and dodging the traps of typecasting, Faran opens up about the fight for authentic representation, the complexity of villainy, and how to create textured characters beyond clichés. Together, we unpack decades of representation, misrepresentation, and the dream of telling our stories on our terms.✨ Don't miss the “Mythe/Mytho” segment where Faran brilliantly responds to the claim that casting Omar Sharif in Doctor Zhivago is the same as whitewashing. Spoiler: It's not.

The late Syd Mead was a visual futurist who was hired to imagine the worlds of Blade Runner, Tron, Aliens, Elysium and other sci-fi films. His work in Hollywood has been lauded for decades, but there's a new exhibit in New York that shows a different side of the artist. Syd Mead: Future Pastime is a collection of his personal and commercial paintings, which are all works of science fiction. Despite his connection to the dystopian world of Blade Runner, Mead's personal vision of the future was unwaveringly optimistic. I talk with Mead's husband and business partner Roger Servick, and the curators of the exhibit, Elon Solo and William Corman, about Mead's predictions for the future of technology, sexuality and spirituality. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 2013 dystopian cyberpunk social commentary ELYSIUM – written and directed by Neill Blomkamp; starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner. In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.Elysium was the follow-up film for Neill Blomkamp after he exploded on the scene in 2009 with District 9, which garnered a Best Picture nomination and countless Top-Ten lists. This is Blomkamp is full cyberpunk mode and he does a great job of exploring the thematic signatures of our favorite sub-genre.So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. SpaceTime Series 28 Episode 05Volcanic Activity on MarsNew research suggests recent volcanic activity on Mars, with eruptions possibly occurring within the last 50,000 years. This discovery, based on satellite observations, highlights a mysterious dark deposit in Elysium Planitia, indicating explosive volcanism. The findings could mean Mars is still volcanically active, raising possibilities of habitable conditions due to interactions between magma and icy substrates.Mysteries of Supernova 1987AAstronomers using the Murchison Wide Field Array have been delving into the enigmatic Supernova 1987A. A deep investigation of mysterious geometric structures on the surface of Mars• Explores a wide variety of anomalous structures on Mars's surface that display a high degree of geometric and pictographic design• Examines sites such as the Elysium pyramid famously described by Carl Sagan and city complexes in the Nepenthes Mensae and Atlantis Chaos regions• Argues that Mayan creation stories of a Star War and Sumerian myths of the Anunnaki provide ancient evidence for the existence of a Martian cultureExploring evidence of a lost Martian civilization and its contact with Earth, investigator George Haas examines a wide variety of anomalous structures and geoglyphs on Mars's surface that display a high degree of geometric and symbolic design that reveal an ancient bond between Earth and Mars. He takes a closer look at Carl Sagan's famous pyramid of Elysium, including high-resolution images released after Sagan's death. Investigating a pair of city complexes in the Nepenthes Mensae region of the Red Planet, Haas shows how the settlements include geometric formations of a five-sided star and a hexagonal pyramid, along with geoglyphic formations representing a dove, a killer whale, and a bat.Examining the Libya Montes region, he reveals a keyhole-shaped formation identical in design to ancient tombs built in Japan. In the Atlantis Chaos region, he investigates the remains of an ancient city nestled along a dead lake, an urban-like array of gridded broken walls and shattered foundations. He then explores a detailed parrot-shaped geoglyph in the large-impact crater known as Argyre Basin that four veterinarians found to possess 22 points of anatomical correctness with terrestrial parrots.George J. Haas is the founder and premier investigator of the Mars research group known as The Cydonia Institute. A member of the Society for Planetary SETI Research, he has coauthored two books and six peer-reviewed science papers related to anomalous formations on the surface of Mars. He has appeared on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and on the History Channel's Ancient Aliens, The Proof is Out There, and The UnXplained with William Shatner. He lives in Waterford, Virginia.https://thecydoniainstitute.com/Providing an ancient Mesoamerican connection to the civilizations of Mars, Haas looks at a lesser-known Mayan creation story about a Star-War that occurred 800,000 years ago. He reveals parallels between this story and ancient Sumerian stories of the Anunnaki occupation of Earth and Mars as documented by Zecharia Sitchin. Haas also shows how there is a direct correlation between the ruins on Mars and the art and architecture of Mesoamerican cultures, providing clear evidence of a long-disappeared Martian civilization that we are only now rediscovering.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/earth-ancients--2790919/support.

While the left typically perceives Elon Musk as an all-talk grifter, our guest Beka Valentine argues his Starship program will make many off-earth industries, like drug manufacturing and solar harvesting, inevitable through dramatically lowering the cost of launching to low-Earth orbit. Could his and Bezos's fantasies of colonies on the moon, Mars, or in asteroid belts be far behind? If so, what happened to the late-2010s enthusiasm for "Fully Automated Luxury Space Communism"? Is the left now anti-space, and is that position leaving the future entirely in the hands of capitalists and imperialist states? In her new essay for Strange Matters, Valentine argues we should begin strategizing for this new era so we don't get stranded from Elysium.Guest co-host Nick Chavez gives the engineer's perspective, and describes his critique of ME Obrien and Eman Abdelhadi's vision of expropriating a SpaceX-like factory in their speculative novel Everything for Everyone.Beka Valentine's essay in Strange Matters: https://strangematters.coop/political-economy-of-near-future-space-industries/Inside Musk's Starfactory: https://wccftech.com/spacex-is-using-robots-to-make-starship-rockets-in-texas-shows-footage/Nick Chavez's review of Everything for Everyone: https://designformanufracture.com/2023/01/25/review-everything-for-everyone-an-oral-history-of-the-new-york-commune-2052-2072-by-m-e-obrien-and-eman-abdelhadi/Don't Let Them Leave! zine: https://ia903003.us.archive.org/20/items/dontletthemleave/Dont-Let-Them-Leave-zine-unimposed%20.pdfPast episodes of Proletkult: https://www.patreon.com/collection/87627 Song - Giorgio Moroder - Racer
