Join Greg Alba and John Humphrey as they dive into the politically charged, high-stakes world of A24's 2024 thriller, Civil War. Written and directed by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Ex Machina, Annihilation), this intense film thrusts viewers into a near-future America on the brink—where deep societal divisions, covert operatives, and explosive power struggles collide. Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia, The Power of the Dog, Bring it On) leads the ensemble as a beleaguered war photographer documenting the American dystopia of a not-too-distant future. Opposite her, Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus, Guns Akimbo) provides a dose of heart & innocence as she attempts to follow in her hero's footsteps only to come face-to-face with the grim realities of wartime in America. Wagner Moura (Narcos, Elysium, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) brings a wild, free-spirited energy amid the chaos as a determined if reckless Reuters journalist, & Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune, Ladybird) rounds out the core cast as a seasoned New York Times reporter with a warm energy. Adding a unique edge to the narrative, Nick Offerman (The Last of Us, Parks and Recreation) appears as the President of what remains of the United States of America and Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Killers of the Flower Moon) captivates in a singular & Incredibly tense sequence as a rogue soldier with a singular view of what constitutes a "real American.." Greg & John break down every electrifying moment—from tense, high-stakes meetings in war-torn settings to the adrenaline-charged standoff scenes that redefine the film's narrative. Discover how Civil War masterfully blends action and political intrigue to question the very fabric of America as we know it in an increasingly insane & uncertain time... Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 2013 dystopian cyberpunk social commentary ELYSIUM – written and directed by Neill Blomkamp; starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner. In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.Elysium was the follow-up film for Neill Blomkamp after he exploded on the scene in 2009 with District 9, which garnered a Best Picture nomination and countless Top-Ten lists. This is Blomkamp is full cyberpunk mode and he does a great job of exploring the thematic signatures of our favorite sub-genre.So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. A deep investigation of mysterious geometric structures on the surface of Mars• Explores a wide variety of anomalous structures on Mars's surface that display a high degree of geometric and pictographic design• Examines sites such as the Elysium pyramid famously described by Carl Sagan and city complexes in the Nepenthes Mensae and Atlantis Chaos regions• Argues that Mayan creation stories of a Star War and Sumerian myths of the Anunnaki provide ancient evidence for the existence of a Martian cultureExploring evidence of a lost Martian civilization and its contact with Earth, investigator George Haas examines a wide variety of anomalous structures and geoglyphs on Mars's surface that display a high degree of geometric and symbolic design that reveal an ancient bond between Earth and Mars. He takes a closer look at Carl Sagan's famous pyramid of Elysium, including high-resolution images released after Sagan's death. Investigating a pair of city complexes in the Nepenthes Mensae region of the Red Planet, Haas shows how the settlements include geometric formations of a five-sided star and a hexagonal pyramid, along with geoglyphic formations representing a dove, a killer whale, and a bat.Examining the Libya Montes region, he reveals a keyhole-shaped formation identical in design to ancient tombs built in Japan. In the Atlantis Chaos region, he investigates the remains of an ancient city nestled along a dead lake, an urban-like array of gridded broken walls and shattered foundations. He then explores a detailed parrot-shaped geoglyph in the large-impact crater known as Argyre Basin that four veterinarians found to possess 22 points of anatomical correctness with terrestrial parrots.George J. Haas is the founder and premier investigator of the Mars research group known as The Cydonia Institute. A member of the Society for Planetary SETI Research, he has coauthored two books and six peer-reviewed science papers related to anomalous formations on the surface of Mars. He has appeared on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and on the History Channel's Ancient Aliens, The Proof is Out There, and The UnXplained with William Shatner. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kay A Oliver, author of the book Road to Elysium. Kay is an award-winning author, a Television Academy member, and a prominent figure in literature and entertainment. An innate storyteller with a creative spirit, Kay has illuminated her life's journey with an enduring passion for writing. Her mission is to craft captivating stories that ignite joy and engage readers with her signature easy-to-read style. Her books are irresistible page-turners, filled with unexpected twists that keep readers spellbound. Kay's impressive portfolio includes ten acclaimed novels, and her work has been featured in "iPain Magazine" and "Orange County News" multiple times. She holds degrees in Radio, TV, Film, and an MBA, combining her storytelling passion with a deep understanding of the entertainment industry. Her website, [KayAOliver.com], offers invaluable writing tips for aspiring authors and reflects her dedication to nurturing new talent. In my book review, I stated Road to Elysium is a wonderful contemporary fiction novel. We meet Ken in a darkened room and learn that he is a man filled with grief. Because of his loss, his life consists of working, eating, and sleeping - though he doesn't do the last two well. But a home invasion launched by two unruly teens from a nearby neighborhood changes everything. Although a work of fiction, I'm told that this novel is based loosely on a true story. Kay does a great job getting you to understand Ken - where he begins the journey and where he eventually ends. She allows us to see that progress isn't always linear, and that moving through grief takes time, patience, and understanding. If you like a story that delves into love, friendship, family, loss and grief, and personal growth, then this is a story for you.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Kay A Oliver: Website: https://kayaoliver.com/ X: @amazinglyOliver TikTok: @Hollywood_Gal IG: The_Hollywood_Gal FB: @authorkayaoliver   Purchase Road to Elysium on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/48XKtJc Ebook: https://amzn.to/3UYFiTx   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #kayaoliver #roadtoelysium #contemporaryfiction #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Could his and Bezos's fantasies of colonies on the moon, Mars, or in asteroid belts be far behind? If so, what happened to the late-2010s enthusiasm for "Fully Automated Luxury Space Communism"? On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Misha Saul, the host of the Kvetch Substack. Saul is a first-generation Jewish Australian, born in Georgia (former Soviet republic), who grew up in Adelaide and now lives in Sydney. He graduated from the University of Adelaide with degrees in commerce and law. His day job is in finance, but the Kvetch highlights his interests in history and Jewish culture. Razib and Saul discuss extensively the differences and similarities between the US and Australia, and how each relates to other Anglophone nations like Canada, New Zealand and of course the UK. Saul asserts though Australia leans into its frontier reputation, in reality it is much more of a bureaucratic-ruled nation than the US, albeit with more of a Scots-Irish flavor than comparatively middle-class New Zealand. He also contrasts the relatively generous welfare-state of Australia and America's inequality, which he describes by analogy to the film 2013 Elysium, with its contrast between an earth dominated by favelas and a well-manicured low-earth orbit utopia for the super rich. They also discuss the geographical and cultural coherency of a vast nation like Australia, which has a desert at its center. Saul mentions it is often actually cheaper to fly to and vacation in Bali or another Asian locale than going to Perth from Sydney. Despite the reality that Australia has exotic fauna, it is notably an overwhelmingly urban society, where few have any interaction with the “bush.” Though Australians appreciate archetypes like “Crocodile Dundee,” Saul paints a picture of a much more urbane reality. Razib asks about the phenomenon of “white-presenting” Aboriginals, and Saul argues all societies look somewhat crazy from the outside because of their shibboleths, and the debates around Aboriginality are Australia's. As an immigrant and first-generation Australian, Saul also discusses Australia's immigration system, which strictly controls and regulates migration. Saul argues that because of the high educational and skill qualifications most Australian immigrants assimilate well, and he contends that there is a broad consensus to maintain strict limits on inflows. He argues that the Anglo-Australian identity is strong enough that the assimilative process continues to work even with the large number of Asians from China and India, who have triggered nativist worries and political activism.

Eric Schulze loves the intersection of science and food so much that after many years as an FDA regulator, he decided in 2016 to leave the federal government to join the then-nascent Memphis Meats (now UPSIDE Foods). He'd go on to spend the next seven years working to advance the cultivated meat pioneer's science, technology, communications, and ultimate regulatory approval by the agency for which he used to work. Now, Eric's charting a new path for himself, founding GoodHumans, a consultancy aimed at assisting and even launching biotech startups seeking to bring their new innovations to the world. In this episode, Eric and I discuss the state of the cultivated meat movement today and where it may be heading. This includes the path to commercialization, the obituaries being written for the sector, the statewide sales bans on the product, and comparisons to other technologies. We even discuss our mutual love of sci-fi and give some recommendations to those of you fellow nerds out there.  Eric's a wealth of knowledge on all things alt-protein, so if you want both information and inspiration, listen to what he's got to say. Discussed in this episode Eric first learned about cultivated meat after the $18,000 meatball was unveiled in 2016. Our past episodes on this show with Uma Valeti and Teryn Wolfe, the latter of whom Eric has jointly launched a new company, Nexture Bio. Eric is a big fan of British physicist David Deutsch  Eric recommends reading The Science of Science (nonfiction) along with fiction such as The Name of the Wind, Three Body Problem, and The Maniac. Paul recommends Tender is the Flesh (fiction) and Frostbite (nonfiction). He also wrote a review of some 19th century animal protection literature recently.  Both Eric and Paul liked the films Gattaca and Elysium. More about Eric Schulze, PhD Eric Schulze, PhD is a professional molecular biologist, genetic engineer, and former federal biotechnology regulator, and most recently is the CEO of GoodHumans, a full-service strategy and design firm. He served as Vice President of Product and Regulation at UPSIDE Foods, where he led both design and development of the company's meat products as well as its regulatory-, policy-, and government affairs. Before that, he served as a U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulator, handling a portfolio of novel food and drug biotechnology products. As a civil servant, Dr. Schulze also served as a federal STEM education policy capacity within the National Science Foundation and currently works with the National Academy of Sciences on undergraduate STEM education transformation. He holds a doctorate in genetic, cellular, and molecular biology with a specialty in embryonic stem cell engineering and is trained in broadcast communication, speechwriting, and risk assessment.

Greg Sturmer, Co-Founder and CEO of Elysium Therapeutics, a company with expertise in reducing pain and addressing opioid use disorder and fatal overdose from fentanyl. Elysium has developed O2P, Oral Overdose Protection, a technology that aims to control the impact of opioids and reduce the risk of use disorder or a fatal overdose. SOOPR is a rescue agent designed specifically for overdoses from synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, which can last longer and be more potent than traditional opioids. Greg explains, "Anytime there's an epidemic, you want to control exposure. The tricky bit in the area of pain management and the use of opioids is how do you control exposure without affecting patient care. We've come up with a technology that maintains the unmatched efficacy of the opioids. But when somebody takes too many pills, and we've actually shown this in our human study, we can reduce the exposure because we use this proprietary molecular delivery system that uses the body's natural digestive process to control how much of the opioid gets released. That's how we're addressing the front end of the issue, where somebody is prescribed an opioid." "But sadly, what happens today is several individuals progress along the road to opioid use disorder, and they end up using illicit drugs. That's where our second program, SOOPR, comes into play. As you know, our streets in the US have been flooded with fentanyl. Fentanyl is a highly potent opioid. The cartels have gotten very wise in how to expand their market. They introduced fentanyl-laced pills because a lot more people are willing to take pills rather than inject. Well, that changed the game dramatically because when somebody overdoses orally on fentanyl, that puts them at risk of respiratory depression for hours where they stop breathing." "Existing rescue agents like Narcan and Opvee weren't designed for oral synthetic opioids and overdoses of those drugs. ‎SOOPR, we believe, is the first rescue agent designed specifically for synthetic opioids. What it does is it outlasts that synthetic opioid danger zone, blocking the mu-opioid receptors and preventing that respiratory depression or rescuing somebody who's already in respiratory depression." #ElysiumTherapeutics #Opioids #OpioidAbuse #SyntheticOpioids #OpioidUseDisorder #PainManagement #SaferMedicines Elysiumrx.com Download the transcript here

For the fourth time in the history of the podcast, Team Vintage Sand returns to one of its most popular formats, the Hidden Gems episode. As we did previously in episodes 11, 30, and 40, Michael, John and I each choose one film to discuss that we feel has been unjustly neglected and overlooked by the huddled masses yearning to see anything besides a prequel, sequel, spinoff or reboot. So please enjoy Episode 53, which features three films that could not be more different from one another. Michael takes us back to the 70's and to a John Cassavetes film that was ignored and even despised upon its (very limited) initial release but has only gained in reputation and influence across the years. I focus on a very imperfect genre film, Neill Blomkamp's second feature, 2013's "Elysium" that, perhaps even more powerfully and viscerally than acknowledged masterworks like "The Social Network" and "Her", predicted a desperate future that we appear to be headed for much sooner than the filmmaker anticipated. Finally, John shines the spotlight on Alice Wu, a unique filmmaker and storyteller. Her second film, The Half of It, a lovely variation on the "Cyrano de Bergerac" formula, had the misfortune of being premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival…that never took place, because it was 2020. It ended up in the undifferentiated mass of content that is Netflix, from which John will hopefully save it. Enjoy, stay cool in the heat, see great movies, and Thank You for Listening, Citizen!

Energy contamination can be a “woo woo” concept. What is energy? It's a way of expressing something that does actually happen. You don't need to read a person's aura, but you can “see” a person's energy in the way they are presenting themselves. If you create the right vibe, your subconscious is going to steer you to the correct path, and you'll express yourself the way you need to in order to receive what you're after.Elysium by Alexander NakaradaLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/8451-elysiumLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseMentioned in this episode:New Book: The View From The Deck: Thoughts on Values, Vision, and GratitudeGet your copy of Michael Whitehouse's new book The View From The Deck: Thoughts on Values, Vision, and Gratitude now. https://amzn.to/4a6w0tu
