In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Covenant Life Church is pleased to continue the Taboo Series, a series of messages designed to address topics that are considered “taboo” and are not talked about in many church services and sermons. As part of the latest installment, Pastor John and his wife, Valerie, are opening up about their mental health journey and sharing the lessons that they have learned along the way. Together, we’ll work to define mental health, explore possible causes for mental illness and discuss resources or treatment options for those in need. If you’re thinking about suicide, are worried about a friend or loved one or would like emotional support, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (English) or 1-888-628-9454 (Spanish). The network is available 24/7 across the United States. TTY and Chat options are also available for those who are deaf or heard of hearing.

I'm back at it with the third installment of the Taboo Series, All Things Colorism! Whew Chile. Listen, if it's one thing that really gets me going conversationally it's this topic. Colorism has and continues to plague the black space like wildfire and I bring back a recurrent guest to break down this topic and she does it so gracefully. My best, Jewell aka Juice, drops knowledge and perspective on this episode and leaves no crumbs behind. We both give our own personal perspectives and opinions of how colorism has played major parts in our life and give a voice to what we think it will take to really abolish the mindset that comes along with all things colorism. As always, feedback and opinions please y'all and subscribe to all things InYoMix. In the next episode of the Taboo Series, myself and my guests dive deep into the topic of all things Motherhood from a Black Woman perspective. In today's society, there is literally no space for black mothers to be vulnerable, selfish with themselves and admit that motherhood is TOUGH. I bring along 2 very special guests, Tae and Shan, for an amazing conversation about what black motherhood means to us, the magical art of BALANCE with children and the stereotypes and stigmas we face daily as black mothers. These women personifies black motherhood on all levels and they bring along some amazing perspectives throughout this episode. Please give me your feedback and listen for some amazing gems! In February, the House of Representatives passed a bill called the Equality Act, which seeks to extend protections of the 1964 Civil Rights Act to sexual orientation and gender identification. A similar bill passed the house last year; this version includes a provision that states there can be no exemption based on religious objection. In light of what this legislation could mean for churches around the world if it passes the Senate, we will explore this issue in the context of what God created in the Bible and learn how we can uphold our religious beliefs while treating every single human being with the upmost respect.

Before recording this episode, we sat down with a knowledgeable individual to ask them about the questions you all submitted to us. In this episode, we talked about many aspects that deal with homosexuality in Islam. This episode was a very uncomfortable one to record, but that is why we created the taboo series. We answered questions regarding whether or not homosexuality is allowed in Islam, what our stance on homosexuality should be as Muslims, what to do if someone you know comes out to you, what it means if you are a homosexual Muslim, and so much more. We hope you all benefit from this episode and we would love to hear any feedback or thoughts you all have - whether or not you agree with us! We shared our unfiltered thoughts and opinions with you, but at the end of the day, Allah knows best. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
This week’s message - It’s Not Your Fault - is part of a series that began many years ago to address issues that are considered taboo and that the church has been silent about for too long. The taboo issue that we’re discussing this time is sexual abuse. Countless men and women have suffered sexual abuse in silence because the issue isn’t commonly addressed from the pulpit, but by looking at the accounts of Joseph (Genesis 39) and Tamar (2 Samuel 13), we will learn more about this issue, understand potential warning signs and find hope in the fact that innocent victims can be healed and set free. Whatever has happened to you, no matter how long it’s been or how many times it happened, it’s not your fault.
In this episode, we will briefly talk about why we decided to create the taboo series and what you all can expect from us during this time. As you all may know, we started this podcast with the goal to discuss the good, the bad, & the ugly of life as a young Muslim today. We started this podcast to create a platform for young Muslims, somewhere where they feel heard & represented. So far, we have spoken about so many topics in relation to the life of a young Muslim; however, in order to continue to fulfill the purpose of this podcast, we want to dedicate more time to those topics that are considered shameful and stigmatized in our communities. Tune in to this episode & share it with your family & friends! Get pumped, peeps! It's about to get REAL!

This week we start our Taboo Series and Pastor Sean talks about we have to deconstruct our faith to make Jesus the foundation for truth.
Proverbs 26:17-22; James 3:11-12 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. In every family, in every neighborhood, in every friend group and in every church there is gossip. It runs right down the middle of every human heart and it is quite possibly the most diabolical virus one can be infected with. It has torn apart more communities, families, relationships, and churches than perhaps any other one thing. Yet, when is the last time we had a serious conversation about such a sickness? As God's holy people, our speech matters because it bears witness to the world about who God is. We reveal a lot to the world about our own ego when we tear others down. We can do better. We gotta do better. Join us as we continue our Taboo Series with the slippery topic of Gossip. Guest Speaker: Andrew Owens

Romans 12:9-21; Lamentations 3:17-33 & Acts 16:25-40 My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is; so I say, "My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the Lord." Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall! My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. From '13 Reasons' to severe depression, we have to talk about shame and mental health in a way that brings the light of Christ into the darkness that many of us feel. The stigmas surrounding mental health have got to change if we are going to prevent suicides and bring hope to the world in the way that Christ commands us to. How can we as a church family, support one another? How can we a church family, help identify some of the early warning signs? How can we as the kingdom of Christ, sit with those suffering inside the prison of their own mind and not judge them or tell them how to live? How can we become a listening community when the topic of suicide is at hand? Join us as we finish out our Taboo Series and God willing, shine some light on the shadows surrounding suicide.
